I would love to run GFN wu's but I can't seem to get any GPU work for My AMD R9 290X. Is there something I need to do other than pick the projects. A cfg file or something? I realize there have been problems with AMD/ATI cards. I just haven't seen anything in my searches here that would show me if there was a problem with my GPU. |

I noticed that the BOINC process wouldn't run Primegrid work because it doesn't have the apps. Is there a place to manually download the ATI/AMD apps. I've searched for an hour on the site and found nothing. |

That's unlikely to be the cause of your problem. If BOINC couldn't get the apps, you would see BOINC repeatedly trying and failing to download the apps. If it couldn't download the apps, it also wouldn't be able to download the necessary data file for your specific task. Downloading the apps manually is therefore unlikely to solve the problem.
What does your BOINC log show? Is BOINC trying to get work and failing? Is it not requesting work? Is it requesting work and the server is sending 0 tasks? What the exact messages in the log when BOINC tries to get work?
But to directly answer your question, all the apps can be downloaded from the http://www.primegrid.com/download/ URL. Assuming You want to run it with app_info, the file name is primegrid_genefer_3_2_6_0_3.08_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe

Your app_info file is referring to an old version of the app, so the name is wrong. Change the app_info to refer to the correct app.
Did it work without the app_info? If not, what did the log show?

no it did not work at all without the app_info which is why I am trying it.
I updated the Genefer app version but they still are not found. the others appear current and I am not attempting to run CPU tasks so I'm not concerned if they are incorrect.
Like I said it would be nice to see the files not just for downloading but to make sure I have their names right. You've told me they are the wrong versions. but leave me guessing which one(s) are wrong. Since I can't see what is wrong I kinda have to rely on you to give me a bit more info than that. |

I think the version that needs correcting was named by Michael in this post yesterday:
But to directly answer your question, all the apps can be downloaded from the http://www.primegrid.com/download/ URL. Assuming You want to run it with app_info, the file name is primegrid_genefer_3_2_6_0_3.08_windows_intelx86__atiGFN.exe
EDIT: From the BOINC manager, what do the logs (Tools > Event Log, or by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+E) show? |

...so it looks like BOINC is now looking for the right file. Either the file was downloaded to the wrong directory (easy to fix), or you downloaded it to the correct place but it's now gone (still easy to fix.)
Assuming you have a standard BOINC installation, the app needs to be downloaded into C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.primegrid.com\
If you're unsure where your BOINC data directory is, look near the beginning of the BOINC log. It says where the data directory is located.
Sometimes I have found that BOINC will erase the files you put in there manually, so if you downloaded the file to the correct place and it's now gone, you'll need to download it again and mark it as read-only. I'm not sure what causes BOINC to do that sometimes.

Its right where I set it. The primegrid folder is there but no apps are present.
all that is present is the slideshow files. I reset the project and all I got was the slideshow files again.
I've now deleted the project and added it again. I then replaced the app_info and restarted BOINC. Same errors as before. |

One thing I did find is BitDefender see the Primegrid apps as potentially harmful. I've added them to the white list and it seems to be doing fine now. |

Since we have plenty of Genefer running and long CPU tasks finished, I though it would be good time to get my Fury Nano running using app_info.
When messing up with app_info and taking info from well-behaved 280X, I noticed something.
And when starting BOINC...
Note that files were there before BOINC started but since BOINC thinks CAL is needed and not supported, it deleted those file.
Any idea?
My fever doesn't help me think straight...:-(

Got an idea to start with a easier case - PPS Sieve.
And got it running on Fury Nano using updated 288larsson's app_info
Runtime - for PPS Sieve - is ~9 minutes with high GPU usage...and high CPU - up to two cores.
EDIT: 280X needs ~13 minutes.
EDIT2: This is where I got stucked with Genefer, no CAL
Why is CAL needed? Wouldn't be sufficient to go using OpenCL?
EDIT3: I was able to run it as CPU task on GPU (without mentioning Coproc in app_info) but it has it's drawbacks and limitations.

OK, got different idea.
How about let 3 tasks doing CPU GFN16 and single task doing GPU GFN17LOW.
The only trouble is BOINC doesn't honor <max_concurrent> numbers.
Any idea?
(Fury Nano is doing GFN17LOW in ~10 minutes)

hey I made some changes. and now it should work. select GFN16 CPU and GPU GFN17LOW in preferences.
Thanks, but as reported back in September, using
<coproc><type>ATI</type><count>1.000000</count></coproc>
resulted in "App version needs CAL but GPU doesn't support it".
This is why the idea of limitining 3 concurrent tasks for genefer16 and 1 for genefer17low and let BOINC think both of them are CPU task.
BOINC doesn't honor that and I don't know why.
I assume that limit should be per app, not per app_name/class_plan but neighter is working.

How about let 3 tasks doing CPU GFN16 and single task doing GPU GFN17LOW.
The only trouble is BOINC doesn't honor <max_concurrent> numbers.
Forget it, it's a useless feature. It limits number of tasks run on _your_ machine, but server has his own preferences assigning task. Very soon you'll end up with queue full of GFN16 and no GFN17 at all (or vice versa), so some cruncher will stay idle. You have to make really huge queue and purge it periodically when it becomes unbalanced.

Yes, I'm aware that it may need baby sitting. And that huge queue has large penalty of being prime finder.
In first place, I wanted to make both CPU and new GPU working on PG and started with shorter tasks. That's 3 tasks for CPU and 1 for GPU, not 1 for CPU and 3 for GPU.
Would be less pain to put GPU to larger tasks and just make sure there are some for GPU every couple days.

hey I made some changes. and now it should work. select GFN16 CPU and GPU GFN17LOW in preferences.
Thanks, but as reported back in September, using
<coproc><type>ATI</type><count>1.000000</count></coproc>
resulted in "App version needs CAL but GPU doesn't support it".
.
no it's <plan_class> atiGFN17LOW </ plan_class> and <plan_class>atiGFNWR</plan_class>
resulted in "App version needs CAL but GPU doesn't support it". |

no it's <plan_class> atiGFN17LOW </ plan_class> and <plan_class>atiGFNWR</plan_class>

Well, then BOINC error message is a bit misleading.
There are more plan classes per app name, ie.
<app_name>genefer</app_name> and <plan_class>cpuGFN</plan_class> for <platform>windows_x86_64</platform>
and
<app_name>genefer</app_name> and <plan_class>atiGFN</plan_class> for <platform>windows_intelx86</platform>
It should be App version av and it's plan class pc needs xy but it not supported by zzz

This is a bit of lottery as stream pointed out.
And this is way I wanted BOINC to honor <max_concurrent> in the first place.
(Mine is now running 1 cpuGFN16 and 3 atiGFN17LOW)
Is your app_info working on Fiji (aka AMD Fury)?

Dilema of not honoring max_concurrent can be solved by using 2 clients.
It should also solve scheduler issues, ie. balanced workload.
I may try that later...

hi, I test this app_info on a R 290x running a similar on a Fiji it works.
Sorry, it is somehow confusing.
Does YOUR app_info with <coproc> <type>ATI</type> on your Fiji work for you?
Or you are using mine without <coproc> <type>ATI</type>?
I'm running Win 7 x64 / Catalyst 15.10beta and latest BOINC 7.6.9

Still confusing since can't see any GFN task completed on your i7-4770, CAL Fiji (4096MB Windows 10 x64, BONC 7.6.6 host
And there are a lot of "Missing app version" in Application details

I can't give you the event log since I've already changed the app back to its previous rendition. However, the messages basically stated that the apps were duplicates of the WR. I then changed the WR app to version 3.08 and it stated that I didn't have the apps from my app_info in my primegrid folder.
I was trying to edit the app_info to allow the genefer 15, 16, 17low, mega, 18, 19, 20, and WR.
I basically copied your app and edited in the correct ATI GPU files using the 3.09 version of the apps so that each app_version was like the genefer but with the different versions of the Genefer for the GPU and not CPU. |

I coordinated some tests with Honza on Sunday to try to resolve this issue. I had server-side tracing turned on while Honza requested (and failed to get) GFN work. I don't have a solution yet, but a bit of good news is that the logs from his multiple requests are very consistent, varying only for things you'd expect, like request ID, timestamps, etc. So it doesn't look like anything totally flaky / non-reproducible. Am investigating "AMD" vs. "ATI" naming issues, CAL vs lack-of-CAL, and so on.

AMD released new drivers for their GPUs - Radeon Software, Crimson.
It reports as driver: 1.4.1848
For 280X, work fetch is OK as it was with Catalyst 15.7.x/15.10beta.

boinc identifies r9 390 correctly with all its stats so why does primegrid not
recognise the newer cards correctly ?
and why should i have to do surgery on arcane files i only have to deal with
every two or three years? |

PrimeGrid would have to update the backend software to recognize it. The issue with that is PG is so customized that upgrading is a large chore and could cause an outage for a long time. |

Also the BOINC client is being updated with a new detection method for non-CAL GPUs. Which uses the to use the OpenCL ID string.
With the new code PrimeGrid displays my R9 390x as CAL AMD Radeon (TM) R9 390 Series (8192MB) rather than CAL Hawaii (8192MB).
The server still doesn't know what to do with that just yet. So it looks like I will still need to make up an app_info.xml |
