Your personal background.
All of my BOINC projects are run from home on a desktop computer assembled from hardware purchased online.
I tend to run the more demanding BOINC projects only during the cooler months of the year, as using the cpu and gpu to process tasks uses a not insignificant amount of power and introduces more heat into my living space when the outside summer temps often exceed 95°F/35°C during the day (with an occasional very hot day of 105°F/40°C) and sometimes only drops to a low of 70°F/21°C by the early morning hours. Air-conditioning usage is costly.
Other interests are:
- the freeware ray tracing program, POV-Ray,
- budget home theater sound systems,
- all things Subaru Impreza WRX,
- classic '60s muscle cars (once owned a '69 Chevelle SS396),
- FIA Formula One,
- supporting my local SPCA.
Your opinions about PrimeGrid
PrimeGrid has well-optimized apps to suit both cpu and gpu. PrimeGrid's servers are usually kept well supplied with tasks. Some other projects on BOINC have problems with outages or they just plain run out of certain types of tasks.
I like the level of technical support on the PrimeGrid message board, particularly the Number Crunching forum.
PrimeGrid developers stay involved at the user level to answer questions, both technical and practical, and try to keep the 'customer' interested in participating. In June of 2013, PrimeGrid is trying an experimental bonus credit for longer tasks to encourage more users to take on these very time-consuming tasks.
Setting my PrimeGrid preferences is relatively painless, as there are usually sufficient explanations in the footnotes for the various types of subprojects.
