At the end of February, we discovered that a small group of people were cheating by faking results. Changes were immediately made to our validation software to prevent this from happening again.
We have rescinded all the credits from the users who were cheating. To be fair, we've also deducted those credits from the teams they were in. Of course, not everyone in their teams are cheaters, but fraudulently gained credits shouldn't count towards team scores. Some of the teams affected are amongst the oldest, largest teams here, and in some cases those teams have lost in excess of 1 billion credits.
The other team members, no doubt, knew nothing of the cheating, so no stigma should be attached to these teams, or their members. I'm listing the teams here only so that if you suddenly see your team's credits and/or rank have dropped, you'll know why.
The following teams (team ID: team name) have lost credits:
64: BOINC@Taiwan
1: BOINCstats
103: Dutch Power Cows
2887: TaiwanROC
852: SETI@Taiwan xWζ

Yes. Approximately one month's worth of PPS sieving needs to be redone. That work is being crunched now.

Did you abduct the total credit of the cheating users from the team(s) they were/are a member of or did you take into account the date they joined a team?
ABSOLUTELY! I would not have touched the team totals if I could not tell, with certainty, exactly how much credit belonged to each team. The system keeps track of how much credit each person has when they join and leave each team.
If a person contributed 1 credit to team A and a billion credits to team B, then that's exactly what would have been deducted.

I can understand why people cheat. Personally, I'd rather have credits as a reward for my genuine contribution and get that feel-good feeling from contributing something worthwhile.

Yes. Approximately one month's worth of PPS sieving needs to be redone. That work is being crunched now.
So work I and others did has been wasted? The time, the processor power, the good will, and the heat and CO2 generated?
So I have paid for electricity, contributed time, and these toe-rags have seen to it that is was for nothing?
Can these thieves be named and shamed? Their credits reduced to zero? Banned? Banned from all BOINC projects and all records wiped?
If you are one of the scum-bags that did this, I hope your life has moments of huge and random disappointment. It is selfish parasites like you that, by thoughtlessly taking advantage of other people's good will, make other people's lives harder than they should be. If you took the same imagination and effort that you applied to cheating and did something constructive with it, you lives would have a more positive value than they do right now.
Wow, a billion credits worth of work all destroyed by these lying wastrels. The wasted elapsed month, the time, energy and motivation cost of the project team. Appalling, utterly appalling.
If you know one of these people, spit in their face for me. (Or pour Coke in their PCs.)
By the way, if any of these cheats are in the UK, inform the UK police as their wilful sabotage of this project is an offence under Section 3 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990. It does not matter that your project computers are outside the UK. |

Actually, nobody has wasted power, electricity, the heat, CO2 and so on.
PPS Sieve is only a sieve and in general requires only 1 quorum.
The only real wasted thing - the admin's time for investigation, cheaters reveal, DB correction, new tasks generation and so on.
There is also "loss of profit" from false sieving... I mean some Proth numbers could be between those factors, which we no need to check.

Your work was in no way wasted. Only the work that was faked was removed, and now needs to be crunched again. |

So work I and others did has been wasted? The time, the processor power, the good will, and the heat and CO2 generated?
Yes, but not a whole month's worth. Mostly, the re-sieving is to cover work that they returned that wasn't valid. So, it's re-sieving work that was never done in the first place. HOWEVER, although we can tell which ranges don't have any factors, we can't determine whether that's due to valid computations of ranges that simply had no factors, or fraudulent results that didn't return any valid factors. So some fraction of the work being re-sieved was already done legitimately and is now being done again. In fact, because we're now double checking a lot of sieve tasks, you could say the work is being done in triplicate due to this. (The original valid run plus two new runs.)
It's not possible to determine how much valid work is being repeated. It could be 99%, it could be 1%, or it could be anywhere in between. We do know it's not 99% because the re-sieving IS finding new factors, which shouldn't happen when re-sieving ranges that were correctly done before. So all the new factors we're finding are from ranges that were faked by the cheaters.
So I have paid for electricity, contributed time, and these toe-rags have seen to it that is was for nothing?
To some extent, probably, but it's not possible to say how much.
Can these thieves be named and shamed?
That remains a possibility, although I'm not going to do that at this time. That's an action that can't be undone, but we can always decide to do so in the future.
Their credits reduced to zero?
Already done.
Banned?
Banned from all BOINC projects and all records wiped?
Not really possible since you can always create a new account. Their records now show 0, which may be better than wiping the records altogether.
If you are one of the scum-bags that did this, I hope your life has moments of huge and random disappointment. It is selfish parasites like you that, by thoughtlessly taking advantage of other people's good will, make other people's lives harder than they should be. Some of the cheaters have been around for many years, and were members of various teams over those years. The cheating seems to be relatively recent and most of their credits were probably legitimate, although I've erased ALL of their credits, legitimate or fraudulent. Some appeared to join PG recently just for the purpose of cheating.
Joining a team briefly to adversely affect that team really is senseless, since the system tracks how many credits go to each team. It's not as if the guy with 4 billion credits could switch to team X at the last minute so that all 4 billion credits get removed from that team. That's not how it works. (Yes, the top guy had over 4 billion credits. Note the use of past tense in that sentence.)

Hello,
I just noticed this piece of information. It is a bad news. But I also heard some different voice from Team TaiwanROC. (Link:http://tw-dclub.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=625&start=48)
I have searched its Boincstats records. I could see that their Team credits has been cut. But:
http://boincstats.com/en/stats/-1/user/list/0/0/599638/0
I did not find that any one of them have lost credits
http://boincstats.com/en/stats/11/team/detail/2887/charts
In addition, I really don't think that they have gained 3 million credits from Feb.
So, could you double check their records? I understand that it is bad to cheat in crunching. But, I just do not understand why Team TaiwanROC was considered "cheating" based on their records on Boincstats.
Thank you so much. |

Ok this is more serious than I thought at first.
It's sad that people are cheating but now I read that 1 month of work needs to be re-done? I mean, that's the actual harm here. So much electricity and computer power wasted... I think accounts where cheating is detected should get suspended. To me it seems it's not just faking stats, it's causing actual harm too.

Well done PG for revealing this information. Xu Yongchen stated that there was some concern for not revealing the names of the culprits. Because of the action of a few the whole team needs to suffer as they too would have received credit for work not done. Apart from that, members of the team might not be aware who done the damage and would feel ashamed and no longer trust each other unless the culprits names were revealed. As it is impossible to acquire such large credit in such a short time, I believe that they should be named and shamed for I sure would not wanted them in my team should they wish to join. |

That's a good point. I'm considering releasing the names.
As for acquiring so many points in such a short period of time, you would be astounded at how much legitimate computing power people have available to them. More than once, people have asked us "How did so-and-so get so many points so quickly? Are they cheating somehow?". Each time it's been a legitimate user with a LOT of crunching power -- often many GPUs. Especially in this age of cloud computing where you can rent a server -- or a hundred servers -- with a click of a mouse, it's very easy to throw a lot of cores at a boinc project.

Thank you for releasing the names of the cheaters Michael. Those of us who are honest and wouldn't do something like this appreciate knowing who the dishonest individuals are so that we can avoid associating with these individuals in our future on any projects here on BOINC, not just this one.
It is important that this kind of information is known thru out the entire network, not just this project so that this kind of thing doesn't happen again not only here but on any of the other projects either.
Integrity is something we all expect from these projects we are participating in, many with our home personal computers, and many with our employer's computers. People who do not bring integrity and personal responsiblity with their actions to a site like this where we all depend on the honesty and yes, integrity of all the participants for our own safety and well being deserve to have their names made known and if possible legal action taken. These people are lucky its just their monnikers being advertised and not their full names as most people would be unable to identify them by these nicknames they are using.
I hope that Prime Grid is at least able to ban or highly restrict the access of these individuals to the project and if they can, I hope you take some legal action against the individuals who caused this grief to the project. If nothing else, they have caused you a huge amount of man hours in tracking this down and in rescheduling the jobs that are involved because of their fraudulent behavior. These people should not get away with what they did. You have the proof and you should go after them. Its not enough to just take away points.

They were all notified. None responded. Most were using fake email addresses (and fake EVERYTHING, actually.) We caught them almost two months before we took action to remove their credits; we were very thorough about making sure this wasn't some sort of innocent mistake.

Did this cheating happen during any of the PPS Sieve challenges. If so, have the outcomes also been cleaned up? It would seem to me it may have happened during the 2012 Winter Solstice, but if it was going on long enough it could have also affected the 2011 or maybe earlier?
Was it only PPS? Could other Sieves have been included?

The two most important things in PrimeGrid are 1) the integrity of the results, and 2) the trust of the community.

I don't think the stats page generated here can easily be changed, but once I will rerun the stats with my tool which now includes ban-functionality as well as deduct-the-score-of-the-banned-user-from-their-teams-total-functionality.

I am very sorry to hear that some people have to cheat!
Even more so because these people ruin the reputation of my team and others while there is nothing we can do to prevent these people from joining.
Having said that, i will fire up my 2 cards this weekend to join in the redo of the cheated units.

Actually any team can change its membership policy and close the team. Joining new members will take place only after acceptance of the team administrator.

I'm not going to discuss the details of how the cheating was done because we don't want to give any clues about what we detected. However, I will say that there is absolutely no doubt that the people involved were cheating, and knew they were cheating. There's no way this was accidental.

Sadly, I'm afraid you're mistaken.
If Willy claims he didn't cheat, then he'll have to explain why the computers on his account were returning obviously fraudulent results. Before anything was announced here, and before the credits were removed, I sent messages via both email and private message to Willy and all the other cheaters. That was their opportunity to claim innocence. None of them responded. In fact, almost all of the emails bounced because the email addresses on most of their accounts were fake.

Good job catching this. Not much you can do about human nature. Some people steal cars, some candy bars, I guess these people wanted to steal points. |

Perhaps he was asking about the % of work completed to make-up for the cheating rather than an update on the cheating itself?

Progress report please Captain.
Exactly 54% done. I originally figured this as somewhere around 40 days worth of work when we started on 2 April. At the moment it's looking more like 48-50 days total.
If you check the PPS Sieve Range Statistics, you can see how far we're progressing. We were at 277P-278P before I loaded the ranges that needed to be redone. And if you're looking closely at that page, please be aware that the factors found get archived (and the stats set back to zero) at 26 minutes past each hour. We're finding about 2000 factors/hour at the moment.
When all this is done, the server will automatically start sending out work from where we were previously. It's not something we have to switch back manually. |

Holy wow never seen that before. Ty.
Unfortunately, some of us have seen cheating before. Reading this thread reminded me about Wate so I looked at his list of 5335 computers again. Here they are on CPDN. Apart from Wate himself, the owners of the other computers didn't know that BOINC was on their computers until one observant owner noticed it and got in touch with members of the Boinc Italy team who then investigated.
I see that in some CPDN database upgrade this cheat has accidentally got his almost four million credits back (at that time this was a phenomenal number) so after all this time I'll have to get him minussed again.
Some people just don't realise that sooner or later cheats will be exposed. |
|
|
|
When a lot of us have only small computers and give as much computing time as they can, just for the pleasure of participating in some progress, a few others cheat to get points, to be the firsts on a list. What a shame !
Kick them out from BOINC.

I was referring to the page showing progress through sieving.
Bet when you realised there was cheating going on at CPDN, you went: "wate a minute..." ;)! |

i think maybe some of Boinc@Taiwan member, us can turn our favor projects to PG if you would restart these work units.
When restart, please tell me.
i want to say, no volunteer one needs to cheat to gain score, it means nothing.
the resources we spend out were more and more then we gained.
sorry for poor English..... |

Captain: progress report.
We're 72% done at the moment. We ought to be done by the end of May or maybe a bit sooner.
Update: 14-May-2013: 84.5% done
Update: 18-May-2013: 92.3% done. Should be done in four more days at the rate we're going.
Update 21-May-2013: 98.2% done. Between 1 and 2 days left. |

I'm still not sure what you're asking, but since the number you included is DPC's score in THIS challenge (The Low Country Festivities Challenge), I'll guess that you're asking if the team numbers are correct for the last challenge.
The answer is YES, the numbers are correct. The cheating scandal does not affect the most recent challenge in any way.
The only challenge that was affected by the cheating was the 2012 Winter Solstice Challenge.
