October's PRPNet Project
We are resuming PRPNet's project of the month…and we're returning to 5oB to see if we can finish it up.
The dual Sierpinski problem (Five or Bust) is PrimeGrid's PRPNet project of the month for October. 5oB was posted in the mersenne forum on 09 October 2008. That means this 09 October 2011 will mark it's 3rd anniversary.
Because of the ongoing Equinox Challenge, 09 October is an unrealistic goal to set. Therefore, the goal will be to complete the double check effort before the end of the month. With the double check complete, the Sloane sequence A067760, a(n) = "least positive k such that (2n+1)+2^k is prime, or 0 if no such k exists", will be established presuming that the 20 identified probable primes are actually prime.
Testing times are currently ~30-35 hours for faster hosts and ~45-50 hours for slower hosts. They will continue to increase as n increases. We expect by the end, testing times will be ~45 hours for faster hosts and ~60+ hours for slower hosts.
Goal by 31 October 2011
- Complete double check work of 40291 up to n=9091912
The project will run from 1 October to 31 October (hopefully it will end sooner). It will be a great opportunity to be part of closing out the dual Sierpinski problem. If you are in search for your PSA badge (or upgrade the one you have), now is a good opportunity to get that done as well as give to a worthy cause. :) PSA credit is available.
To participate in wrapping this project up, please add the following server to your prpclient.ini file:
server=5OB:100:1:pgllr.mine.nu:13000 Check out stats to see progress.
Thank you for your consideration!
New to PRPNet?
Please see Welcome to PRPNet. If anyone needs help setting up PRPNet, PM me and I can provide an individualized "pre-set" package. All you'll have to do is download, double click a couple of times and be quickly contributing to the project. All I need is the following:
email=your@email.here
userid=PG_username (Make sure it's unique. If you don't have a unique PG username, add your PG userID to it. For example, for me, John would become John_2449)
clientid=clientID (can be anything you want...does NOT have to be PG clientID)
teamid=teamname (see here for teams already participating)
OS, 32/64bit, and how many cores you wish to run. Background
Many may not realize that back in January 2011 a collaboration was formed between PrimeGrid and 5oB. By February, Mark Rodenkirch had already modified PRPNet to accept the new form and testing began in the PST forum. However, a few days before its official announcement in the PG forum, 5oB discovered the PRP to its final candidate.
This was excellent news and a welcomed completion to one of the Sierpinski conjectures. Now all that remains is to confirm that the found PRP's are the smallest PRP for each k. This requires a double check of all candidates below the found PRP's. Once this is complete, Sloane sequence A067760 can be established.
The participants of PrimeGrid have accomplished incredible achievements while at the same time contributing to the entire prime finding community. Along with project collaborations (PSP, SoB, SR5), PrimeGrid also provides sieve support for several riesel-side projects. The generosity of this sieve file is monumental as it frees up the other projects to focus strictly on prime finding.
Thank you for your consideration!

I'll be back at it after the challenge. The last time I took numbers from all my hosts was 2011-09-11 and run times ranged from 34.0 hours to 59.4 hours. On the fast end is a Xeon 5160 @ 3Ghz and the slow end is a Xeon X5355 @ 2.66Ghz. Almost all machines are x86_64 linux with 1 x86_64 windows machine. All machines have the various HT/Turbo type features disabled.
It looks like we need about 80 completed per day from now till the end of October to reach the goal.
http://u-g-f.de/PRPNet/proj_stats?proj=5oB shows a peak of 52 tasks in a day and numbers mostly in the 20s to 30s. So we need to at least triple the daily output.
FFT length is currently at 864K and at N=8465001 we switch to 896K and then at N=8775001 the last switch to 960K. |

i will switch over a few cores after the challenge as well.
i crunched 5oB the last time it was prpnet project of the month and helped achieve the goals there.
So hopefully we can end the doublecheck effort this month!

I suppose the deadlines for these WUs are between one and two weeks? If that is the case I can put two of my P4s on it immediately and my i5 after the challenge ends. They're slow (I will estimate a max of 72h/WU) so let's see, that's at the very least 12 WU in a week. The i5 is mobile and downclocked but I'd put it in the mid-range as far as speed, so that's another 12-ish from one machine per week...if I had the iMac farm again that'd be around 128 more per week. ah but I can hope. =/

October's PRPNet Project - Update
The queue at the start is 2581 candidates remaining. Hopefully we'll see 0 by the end of the month. :) That averages out to about 84 WU's/day.

To archive the goal of ~84WU/day there needs to be at least 160 cores crunching.
Currently there are only 52 :(
So don't wait and join NOW!
BTW on my AMD 965 the average duration is 35,5h per WU. |

My 3GHz P4 has been running two WUs for 3.5 days now and they're both around 55%...guess my initial estimates were off. Either that or I've set something up wrong. Or I need to upgrade my computers to include at least somewhat modern technology. Either way I'll keep crunching unless the deadline passes (which, by the way, no one has told me yet).

October's PRPNet Project - Update
Actually, with an average WU time of 35 hours, we need about 122 cores to achieve 84 WU's/day. However, as we approach the end where the average WU time will be around 45 hours, we'll need close to 160 cores.
I suspect we'll see some nice support after the Equinox Challenge has completed.
120 cores can be achieved in many ways:
120 users donating 1 core
60 users donating 2 cores
40 users donating 3 cores
30 users donating 4 cores
20 users donating 6 cores
15 users donating 8 cores Thank you for the help and please spread the word to keep the support coming. During the last PRPNet project of the month on 5oB, 86 users participated contributing over 250 cores. If the same response happens, we'll definitely reach the completion goal by the end of the month. There are currently 13 active participants. We are shooting for 80 active participants contributing 2 cores each...tell a teammate or two or three. :)
For users reading this for the first time, please consider donating a core or two to the effort. If you are in search for your PSA badge (or upgrade the one you have), now is a good opportunity to get that done as well as give to a worthy cause. :) PSA credit is available.

Okay, thanks John. I'm not too worried about my i5 but that's also going to start working after the challenge ends. That's 4 going 24/7. My P4 is also slower than most because it's bottlenecked at the RAM and is also feeding my GPU, so one thread runs a bit behind. Either way they're running smoothly. The thing is a tank, just 7 years old.
Thanks for bumping the deadline! I had no idea these WUs were so important, just thought I'd help out.

P4 is getting its results in today. First one went back whilst I was still asleep. Took 154:22:08, or a little over 6 days going 24/7.
I guess when you say "slower/older machines," you mean things like a C2D from three-ish years ago.
Is there a port of this that will run on my LC II? or my Extensa - that's 120MHz instead of just 25.
In all seriousness I'm putting my i5 in now.

October's PRPNet Project - Update
On the eve of concluding the Equinox Challenge, the statistics are as follows:
- 30 active users (up from 13 just 3 days ago)
- 26.2 tasks/day (average through 5 days - daily completion rate)
- 94.1 tasks/day now needed to reach goal (up from 84 tasks/day on 01 Oct)

Thanks to everyone there are now 210 tasks in progress (up from about 190 tasks 12 hrs ago and way more than 24 hrs ago). So really we just need all people to commit to at least 10 more tasks per core or cpu than already in progress. That is about 20 days of work or less, although we are getting very close to the next jump in cpu times. |
|
|
|
|
|
P4 machines reported their 4 and are at about 35% on the next 4...got another 4 going on the i5 at about twice the speed currently at 58%. I can do this all month, sure.
Unfortunately I cannot commit any of my other machines to this as they are not on 24/7 and are prone to running uncannily close to Tmax...so it's just those 3 CPUs from me. I'll do my part though!

My first WUs returned (first machine to run out PG challenge and SIMAP challenge tasks and the first to move back to PRPNet) are from a dual proc Xeon 5160 @ 3.00GHz system. No HT or any other silly items like that. I run 2 PRPNet cores and leave the other 2 cores idle as those other 2 cores are the maximum work load that machine ever sees. Both WUs came in at 37.4 hours. This is one of the fastest machines I have for 5oB historically.
I should start having other returns within the next 24 hours. |
|
|
|
|
|
My core 2 duo (older 32-bit mac mini but running linux) is nearly half the speed per core in the PG WOO tasks than my wife's rather ancient P4. Each core on the mac mini took about 10 days to complete 1 WOO task and my wife's P4 took about 4.5 days per WOO task. In the end because the mac mini is a dual core and the P4 a single they both each managed 2 tasks in the challenge but kind of appalling how slow it went on something quite a bit newer architecture wise. Also, the mac mini for the challenge had no other tasks and my wife's machine suspends BOINC when in use. |

I would liked to have precipitated but have been unable to have the set-up package set me up, instead I find myself signing up to receive a login and password into GIMPS. I am running a 17 or bust program and two from the Wood left overs. I did not see "5 or Bust" listed on preferences. I know that I am the root cause of this, it' just part of the learning process. I after all a newbie and this is to be expected. Maybe if I just bought a bigger system, or maybe hooking up a bunch of Pentium 4's. As an aside the "17 or bust" started with 800 hrs...wow!

Desperately trying to hold on to my lead ahead of quel... now I've got Lennart to deal with too? Hope to have a few more cores online tomorrow morning, but I fear it is a losing battle!
We may make the goal yet, I think! |

Oh, you always win at fighting me off. I'm even running 6 less cores than I use to be because something is wrong with the machine in question: a single prpclient instance for 5oB takes the system load from 0.00 to 100+ until I kill the process (or the machine crashes). |

We hit a nice milestone today with 101 daily WU's completed. This fell slightly short of what is needed to reach the goal by the end of the month. The daily average now needed is ~104 WU's/day.
This is good news...but the great news is that today's number doesn't include Lennart's effort. We should begin to see the impact of his work tomorrow. Let's hope we can start shrinking the daily average needed.
Please continue to spread the word. Thank you for your consideration!

After Tuesday's low 98 tasks (probably due to the change to the last FFT length) , we are at a new daily high of 220 tasks for Wednesday! The last 4 days have averaged an impressive 176 tasks per day so would be about 5 days of work left ignoring any recycles.
So are we going to last until Tuesday 25th 05:00 UTC before the last N=9091912 is sent out?
If not, what ports are recommended as backups until I can reconfigure my hosts back to PG (got to work on few badges before the challenge)?
Any guidance and other predictions are welcome!

The low 98 tasks is kind of curious. I'm not sure that's FFT length as much as perhaps the high from the previous day was the completion of WUs and the next day was the start of new ones for a good chunk of the crunchers. Then, those not reporting WUs in the low period completed and reported before the next time. The total number of crunchers hasn't changed much so many with this FFT length we're going to see alternating days like this now?
I am in the hunt for my Ruby PSA badge and am very close. It's almost 100% 5oB nearly continuous since I joined the effort earlier this year. I *think* that I actually just need the next PSA -> BOINC credit update at this point. I am at least sticking around until the end of 5oB *and* to my Ruby badge so I too wouldn't mind suggestions on where to point my systems for PRPNet if 5oB wraps up before my badge. Prime hunt, DC, factoring, etc. as long as it is CPU. (Only a single GPU and it is busy). |

Enjoy!

I think so but not that many more to go!
I think this is due to the task synchronization and that the run times are not close multiples of 24 hrs. For example, 36 hr runtime means that it takes 3 days to run two tasks so a host will only report on the 2nd and 4th days. But if the second task now takes 37 hrs then run time is 3 days and 1 hr (73 hrs) so depending on then the hosts reports, it could report on the 4th day or on the 5th day.

I found that Zydor asked this in another thread and rogue replied PPSElow. While I have set that port, I am also open to other suggestions.

I agree but there are too many labels so the values can not be seen.
Also is it possible to have another with the just last 2 to 3 days? The last 24 hrs is probably not reflective of the work done because tasks are 36+ hrs in length. |

Any of the other PRPNet projects are equally attractive. However, PPSlow and SGS stand apart from the others as their testing times are relatively short with PPSlow tasks taking just a few minutes and SGS taking ~12-15 minutes. This post about SGS might be of interest to those seeking their first reportable SGS prime.
Adding a backup server
To add a backup server, edit your master_prpclient.ini file and uncomment your server of choice. For example,
//server=PPSElow:0:5:prpnet.mine.nu:12000 would become
server=PPSElow:0:5:prpnet.mine.nu:12000 Save the file and run the #-#-update-prpclient-ini to update all the folders. Changes will be accepted at the conclusion of your current WU or if you should stop and restart the clients.
The 0:5 represents 0% work share and to request 5 WU's at a time. WU's will only be requested if your primary server(s) is empty or unreachable. Once 5oB empties, your prpclient should start drawing from your back server(s).

I haven't tried them all, but here are a few that I have. All were run on a Q6600 @2.4GHz.
PPSELow <2 min
SGS ~15 min
SR5 ~1 hr 45 min
GCW ~8 hr 15 min
FPS ~9 hr 15 min
Hope that helps a little! |

I've got one WU that ended up orphaned still listed, at time of post still has 142hrs to timeout. It can be reassigned to another machine ..... save waiting for timeout in a climate where tidying up would be otherwise delayed. The WU is:

Host information is not collected in PRPNet so this is not possible. However, if enough participants respond like gomeyer, we should be able to cover all the projects with a few CPU types.

You must be running a client older than 4.3 in order for that to have happened. John or Lennart can short the expiration time (if they desire) so that it can go to someone else. |

It was on 4.3.5
It was my fault it got orphaned, not a problem with the Project. |

It appears that 5oB will have no new workunits to send out as of tomorrow. Make sure you have a backup server or two configured so that you don't run out of work.
I have an interesting stat. For each workunit on 5oB, you can complete about 1000 workunits on PPSElow. If everyone on 50B moved their clients to PPSElow (when 5oB is done), that server would clear about 200,000 workunits a day. |

As of Sun Oct 23 11:52:48 2011 the last unit 1*2^9091912+40291 has been sent out.
Hopefully we do not have to wait another 200 hours to see the final results. |

So, it's over right?
Yes, the queue is empty but there's currently over 300 "in progress". The project will be officially over once all outstanding work is completed and all residues matched. Phil is doing the triple check on WU's with different residues so our goal will simply be to complete all outstanding work.
NOTE for backup server: I noticed a behavior that I did not expect. My current settings are:
server=5OB:100:1:pgllr.mine.nu:13000
server=PPSElow:0:5:prpnet.mine.nu:12000 However, once the 5OB queue emptied and my client started to pull from the PPSElow server, it only retrieved 1 task although I had it set at 5. Mark probably intended it to work this way so that the client would get back to the main server as soon as possible (thus the 1 task limit).
I fixed this by changing my settings to the following:
server=5OB:99:1:pgllr.mine.nu:13000
server=PPSElow:1:5:prpnet.mine.nu:12000 During the next server connect, my client pulled down 5 tasks instead of 1.
With PPSElow tasks being so short, 1 WU at a time is NOT preferred. A queue of at least 5-10 is recommended.

Actually I would recommend closer to 30 as it is about an hour of work. |

Due to some hardware and network issues (basically most of my grid all having problems at once), I think I lost 2 or 3 5oB WUs somewhere...on the P4s so they weren't too far along and probably would have taken much much longer to complete than is ideal. Sorry about any trouble that may have caused!
I've done my part, for what it's worth and considering the age of most of my grid...just over a million points on 5oB. I suppose I'll move most of my machines back to PPSElow once they're done with Mersenne or whatever they're up to at the moment. That's always been my favorite port, and I tend to get 50 units at a time due to my sporadic router...

The closest would be PPSElow, but that will take many months. It is the only project with a both a known and finite amount of work left. Projects such as GCW, SG, and PSP have a finite amount of work left, but it is an unknown amount of work.
By finite, I mean that the project has a definitive goal where one can say "there is nothing left to do". By known, I mean that Lennart/John know how many workunits remain to reach that goal. |

13 left as of this moment then 5oB will be done.
Another project that some might be interested in is noprimeleftbehind.net:1400, which is part of CRUS over at mersenneforum. If you find a prime it will be listed in the Prime Pages Top 5000. This is a finite project with an unknown amount of work. This server has work similar to the PrimeGrid PRPNet projects SR5 and ESP. |

October's PRPNet Project - Update
How fitting...4 days remaining and only 4 tasks left to complete. The goal is well within reach. A HUGE thanks and congratulations to all who have participated in this effort. A tremendous amount of work was accomplished.
If you wish for your name to be included as a contributor to the completion of this project, please see this post.
Tasks Remaining
4 (27 Oct)
1237 (17 Oct)
1961 (12 Oct)
2447 (6 Oct)
2581 (1 Oct) Barbecue 5 November
For users wishing to move their cores to the next event, please see the 5 November 2011 Barbecue sponsored by the team Aggie The Pew. PSA credit is available.
To participate, please add the following server to your prpclient.ini file:
server=PPSElow:100:20:prpnet.mine.nu:12000 Check out stats to see progress.
Thank you for your consideration!
New to PRPNet
If anyone needs help setting up PRPNet, PM me and I can provide an individualized "pre-set" package. All you'll have to do is download, double click a couple of times and be quickly contributing to the project. All I need is the following:
email=your@email.here
userid=PG_username (Make sure it's unique.
