Welcome to the Autumnal Equinox Challenge
This year's autumnal equinox occurs on 23 September. Come join us as we usher in the fall and cooler temperatures with a 13 day marathon on the Woodall Prime Search project. To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Woodall Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 23 Sep 2011 18:00 UTC and end 06 Oct 2011 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 bit, Windows 32 bit and MacIntel. These applications will be sent to 64 bit clients. As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~30-45 hours on fast/newer computers and 75+ hours on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)
Restricted airflow is one of the primary reasons for overheating. Take the time to monitor the fans and review the dust buildup. Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.
Time zone converter
The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.
Scoring Information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 23 Sep 2011 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 06 Oct 2011 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will use the "prime score" method which is based on the n value (k*b^n-1) to score the challenge. The only difference is that the primary and double checker of a WU will receive the same score.
Therefore, each completed WU will earn a unique score based on its n value. The higher the n, the higher the score. This is different than BOINC cobblestones! A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.
Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)
About Woodall Prime Search
Woodall Numbers (sometimes called Cullen numbers 'of the second kind') are positive integers of the form Wn = n*2^n-1, where n is also a positive integer greater than zero. Woodall numbers that are prime are called Woodall primes (or Cullen primes of the second kind).
The Woodall numbers Wn are primes for the following n:
2, 3, 6, 30, 75, 81, 115, 123, 249, 362, 384, 462, 512, 751, 822, 5312, 7755, 9531, 12379, 15822, 18885, 22971, 23005, 98726, 143018, 151023, 667071, 1195203, 1268979, 1467763, 2013992, 2367906, and 3752948 and composite for all other n less than 9108979.
It is conjectured that there are infinitely many such primes. Currently, PirmeGrid is testing for Woodall primes in the n=9.1M level (M=mega, 10^6). The last 3 Woodall primes found by PrimeGrid are:
2013992*2^2013992−1 (Lasse Mejling Andersen): official announcement | decimal representation | Prime Pages Entry
2367906*2^2367906−1 (Stephen Kohlman): official announcement | decimal representation | Prime Pages Entry
3752948*2^3752948−1 (Matthew J. Thompson): official announcement | decimal representation | Prime Pages Entry
For more information on Woodall numbers, please visit the following sites:
What is LLR?
The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n - 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:(Edouard Lucas: 1842-1891, Derrick H. Lehmer: 1905-1991, Hans Riesel: born 1929)

You may already know this but the credits applied to the challenge calculations are different than those given out for a subproject to count on your badges and credit total. |

Special Download Note
If you have not completed an LLR task since Feb 2011, please consider completing one before the Challenge. The new LLR application is substantially larger than the previous (~5MB vs. 26MB now).
If you have completed an LLR task since 6 Feb 2011 then you are fine. If not, then it is suggested that you complete 1 task from a short task project such as SGS (LLR) or PPS (LLR). This will insure that you have the latest application and free up resources for the server to deliver tasks instead of the large application. :)
This applies to each host you'll be connecting to the Challenge.

How to Join the Challenge
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the The Woodall Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. Also, set "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" to no to guarantee that no other work will be sent. The challenge will begin 23 September 2011 18:00 UTC and end 06 October 2011 18:00 UTC.
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive and the WU's for this Challenge are several hours long; so, it is vital to have a stable system (solid hardware) with GOOD COOLING. Invalid WU's will not receive credit.
Application builds are available for the following:
- Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
- Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
- Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel
Note: As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.

Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.
Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start...but don't expect any results for several days due to the length of the Woodall (LLR) tasks.
What to expect at Challenge start
The server always gets hit hard at the beginning of the Challenge. However, Woodall (LLR) tasks are quite long so we don't expect a heavy load. Nevertheless, a few hours before the start (23 September 2011 18:00 UTC) "max cache" will be dropped. Additionally, "max to send" will be dropped. Anyone attempting to request more will be met with "max cache" messages.
We'll raise the front page buffer before the start of the Challenge. These settings will be adjusted as necessary. Afterwards, as conditions allow, we'll raise "max cache". We'll continue to increase "max cache" when the server can handle it.
This method allows the greatest opportunity for the most clients to get work. Even if it's just 1 task for the first few minutes, at least the client is crunching. Past Challenges have shown that clients have an excellent chance to reach "max cache" before their first task is complete. We expect the same this time.
Strategies for starting the Challenge
Depending on a variety of factors, different strategies work for different users. Here are just a few to consider:
- large farm, user can be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences to a fast WU project such as SGS (LLR)
-At Challenge start, update PrimeGrid preferences and only select the Woodall (LLR) project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 SGS (LLR) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
-After all machines have work, increase Maintain enough work for an additional
- large farm, user NOT able to be present at start
-Same connection settings as above
-At earliest access to hosts after start, switch to the Woodall (LLR) project
- a few computers, user can be present at start
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select the Woodall (LLR) project
-Set computers to "No New Tasks" for PrimeGrid
-At Challenge Start, update computers to "Allow New Tasks"
- a few computers, user NOT able to be present at start
-same settings as "large farm, user NOT able to be present at start"
NOTE: This presumes you have all other BOINC projects suspended.
Best of Luck to everyone!

I dare to remind that today systems are mostly(?) multiple core. As the Dog Days of Summer showed that could bring havoc on workload. I understand, that server-side boinc doesn't address that obstacle, probably. But that clearly isn't our problem, you know. We just donate cycles. Shortly, "max cache" -- how many?

Each WU for this challenge will take approx a day on a fast machine, much longer on slower machines. The server will be able to keep up with this easily - it's the short WUs that cause the trouble. I plan to run with approx 0.5 days cache, but only for paranoia.

From my experience the PPS Sieve requires more CPU time than the Cullen/Woodall sieve. So you might prefer to switch to the Cullen/Woodall sieve while the Challenge.

However, it works, if "all tasks run", new demand, enough cache; then come new tasks. If all tasks to send is done, then stop the old tasks again.
But you must have Cache under 4 days. Over 4 days is without function ( Server - Settings of PG)
This depends on each of the members-storage capacity, depending on size

The SoBs are really too far away from completion so you will have to babysit that computer for a little while until you get sufficient WUs to suspend the SoBs.
But you do have options for the other computer but these decrease the longer you wait.
This is a 13 day (312 hr) challenge on really long WUs and you will have some WUs that will not be finished on time. So you could start late for the computer with the 321 LLRs and still do the same number of challenge WUs.
If your Woodall's take about 65 hrs per core (from preferences: Recent average CPU time: 65:25:25). Thus, the average says that a host will only get 4 WUs completed per core on time leaving 50 hours per core available. If it is 32 hrs then you have 24 hrs per core available. You need to do that with your times if you don't have any Woodall's then perhaps doubling the 321 LLR times might be close enough (average is about 24 hrs). Obviously WUs that take exactly 24, 26, 39, 52, 78, 104 or 156 hrs for the challenge will not give you any spare time.
If you have i7's with turboboost enabled then use it! You probably can save an hour or so on the 321 LLRs. One way to do this is as the 321 LLR's finish, just don't allow any more new WUs to start. There are real downsides to this in terms of credit and risk of invalid WUs so I would do that only if the challenge is more important that those.
Also if you have an i7 with hyperthreading enabled, you might get better performance by allowing boinc to have all cores (or turning it off) and not do any GPU work from now to the end of the challenge. Again depends on what is your priority and what better means to you in the context of this challenge. |

Deadline for SoB is 40 days and for 321 is 10 days. The Challenge is 13 days so you might still have time to return the SoB tasks before their deadlines. However, your 321 tasks will definitely expire, but it does not mean you won't still receive credit for them.
For both of these projects, the purge time is 30 days after validated. If your results are returned before the WU is purged (and your results match), then you'll still receive credit. This is not an ideal solution, but at least you'll receive credit for the work you completed.
PPS (Sieve) can continue to run in this challenge ??

With regards to hyperthreading and LLR challenges, it's probably better to turn HT off, at least based upon my limited experience with it.
You'll get the same number of total WUs completed, but each WU will complete in half the time. At the end of the challenge, this may let you get 4 more WUs completed by the deadline than if you had HT turned on. Whether this happens or not depends on the exact timings and is very difficult to predict.
For general crunching, having HT turned on will likely yield more credit, even with LLRs, but with a challenge, you just may get more points with HT turned off. Especially with such long WUs, getting one extra WU per core completed could be a substantial percentage increase in challenge points.
For those not familiar with this, here's the explanation:
LLR benefits very little from Hyperthreading, so with HT turned on, you run twice as many WUs, but each WU takes twice as long to complete. The result is that you get the same number of WUs done whether HT is on or off.
Consider this example: If you use a core i7 with 4 cores, and you have a WU that takes 1 hour with HT turned off, it will take 2 hours with HT turned on.
Now assume you have a challenge that lasts 1.5 hours.
If you have HT turned off, you will run 4 WUs that will complete after 1 hour. A second set of 4 WUs won't complete before the challenge ends. You get challenge points for 4 WUs.
If you have HT turned on, you're running 8 WUs, and all of them complete after two hours. You get zero challenge points because you completed none of the WUs before the challenge ended.
Even though, in both scenarios, you complete 8 WUs in 2 hours, you get more challenge points with HT turned off because shorter-running WUs are more likely to complete before the challenge ends. Running a larger quantity of shorter running WUs is advantageous in the challenge.

With WUs as long as Woodalls, some may consider even more "babysitting."
Imagine you have 90h left and your computer takes 60h per WU. You can crunch 1.5 WUs per core in the time left, but that won't help.
But with a little manual intervention, there is a way to get more.
On a dual core you could finish 2 WUs and bring 2 more to 50% each. You get challenge points for 2 WUs. Now, 50% x 2 = 100%. Let's make use of that.
First run 2 WUs to 50% (we are at 30h now)
Suspend one of them. The core crunching it will start a new one.
After another 30h, this new WU is at 50%, the one you didn't suspend is finished. (total of 60h now)
Now, UNsuspend the one that has been interrupted at 50%
Now both cores have WUs that are at 50% (which will finish in time) AND you have another one that is already finished.
End result: Not 2x100% plus 2x50%, but 3x100%
NOTE: This is not my idea, but I forgot who mentioned it first.

my wu will be done after the begening of this challenge, so would it count or not?
should i download and crunch when the challenge timer reaches zero or its ok like that ?

Please once again review the "Welcome" post as well as the "How to Join" post so you can be informed and make any last minute adjustments that are necessary.
A Cautionary Reminder
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~60-70 hours on fast/newer computers and 100+ hours on slower/older computers.
An hour before the Challenge, we begin to monitor the Meebo chat room at the bottom of the forum page. If at any time PrimeGrid becomes unresponsive, you can still access the Meebo chat room externally here: http://www.meebo.com/room/primegrid/
Before the start, the Subproject stats on the Server Status page will be disabled as will the 24 hour stats on the bottom of the front page. Also, the Top Primes Finder page will be disabled. This is all done to free up as much resources as possible to allow the server to send and receive work. With these long WU's, we don't expect any problems and should have all pages live again shortly after the start.
Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start.
BOINCstats provides hourly updates of Project Challenges. There you can view user and team credit and ranking trends.

hi ,
this might be a silly question,
I have began crunching for this challenge before it begins.
my wu will be done after the begening of this challenge, so would it count or not?
should i download and crunch when the challenge timer reaches zero or its ok like that ?
best regards
Hoping I read your post correctly, only wu's that are sent (received by you) after the challenge starts and returned before the challenge ends will count. So your current work will be great for your normal credit but will not count towards the challenge points.

It has to be downloaded, crunched and returned during the challenge to count for challenge points. So the one you are doing now won't count for the challenge. It might be a lovely prime tho'.

I know thses are the rules but it seems unfair considering the solstice was actually at 09:04 UTC, so the challenge starts nearly 9 hours late!!
It also starts at an inconvienient 04:00 AM (East Aus Std Time-- UTC+10).

With WUs as long as Woodalls, some may consider even more "babysitting."
...
NOTE: This is not my idea, but I forgot who mentioned it first.
- I think that might have been me...
I called it "juggling" - but i think "babysitting" is far more descriptive! :-)
I see that my original post (below) was almost exactly a year ago.. how time flies..

In any case - My boxes are all dusted off & fired up - ready for the 'babysitting' to begin!

If you can suggest a better, more fair, system, I'm sure the admins will always consider ways to improve the challenges.
No matter what time the challenge starts, it's going to be awfully inconvenient somewhere in the world. While I understand completely how a 4 AM start is difficult to manage, even where I am, with a 2 PM start, it's even more inconvenient for people who are at work and can't start their crunchers going until they get home.
Being able to download the tests earlier would mitigate that unfairness somewhat, but it would open up the whole process to widespread cheating. Significant changes to the process would need to occur to mitigate the potential for abuse.
Perhaps a rolling start/finish could be used, whereby any computer could start anywhere within a 24 hour period and would have to finish by the same time of day on the finish day. There are numerous problems with that approach, not the least of which is that right off the top I can think of one easy way to cheat if you have more than one computer.
For those who are not available at the start of the challenge, it IS possible, in theory, to have a batch file start up BOINC automatically, thus enabling the computer to start the challenge on time while unattended. I've never tried it, but I can't think of any obvious reason why it wouldn't work.

Hm, one issue: I notice the report deadline is before the end of the race. The problem is that I have a machine that may only get one WU done in the whole race! If it's reported before the end of the race, even if it's the 3rd result reported for that WU, will it count for the race?

Is the leader's computer really good enough to do these Woodalls in under 5 seconds?
These are obviously "erroneous" tasks. Please note the underlined section below:

Hi all,
there are several possibilitys to 'wake-up' your computer at a specific time.
some OS version have this build in already. (e.g. out of a 'sleep' mode')
- your BIOS may have a feature like 'wake-up on LAN' or 'wake-up at time'
However you must assure, that if your system restart's or resumes work, BOINC manager will start automatically (very easy task on some OS) and the BOINC task manager is setup to receive the intended task's. Not to mention that at this time your 'tasks' should be at 0 (nil, zero)
Best regards .. Parabol

Yes but the stats are still not right as No. 1 is still only producing errors so points won't count and the short runtimes the others have returned may not be valid either.

Black rat is definitively a wrecking ball of an Imperial Stout. It may have an IBU of 50, not to bad. Whereas the white rat brew is only 30 IBU but is easier on the buds because the use of more tail and squeak in their brewing. American (OMG) store/lab/pet rat has an insipid 30; "another Budding Rat please," all day with a US pet rat without so much of a beer buzz.

Too many errors, the result of too much overclocking?
Too much overclocking or not enough cooling could possibly be the reason for these errors. While most of these results are likely errors, it would not be unusual for the first valid ones to start coming in...the fastest of these being around 23 hours.

Of course, some people may be running one of these: Liquid Nitrogen Overclocking

I don't think so. Most of them error out immediately with almost no CPU time, so there's no time for the CPU to get hot at all.

There's almost an infinite numbers of causes for this. Any type of problem with the BOINC installation, such as incorrect permissioning or not having the 32 bit libraries installed on a 64 bit linux (that one is VERY common, especially when it's a new Linux install just for running BOINC) would cause the WUs to error out instantly.

I also have the error, with WUs just get finished within 5 seconds. I got an AMD APU E350 board, just installed win7, drivers and then Boinc. Is the precessor to new? Never had trouble on any AMD-CPU running PG.
anyone has a idea how to solv the problem?

Do You really see the status of funished tasks as 'Calculation Error', not as 'Completed'? Very strange! Boinc stderr output of such tasks reports NO exit code indicating WU finish with NO error.

Try to call for developers, maybe they can solve Your problem.

Out of interest, what would get these WUs done in 24 hours? I was estimating a sandy bridge overclocked to around 5 GHz might do it, but does anyone have a better answer? |

I guess a i7 2600 @4Ghz with no HT could do the trick.
My i7 2600 with HT @3.4 does it in about 53 hours, so with a 15% overclock you should come near the 24 hours.

Hello everyone!!! I really need your help.
I am participating in this challenge and also crunching WUs in PPS sieve.
But I have a problem. GPU usage jumps from 30 to 99% and my Primegrid RAC is falling down. Before challenge I have 99% GPU usage all the time (even when crunching other CPU Primegrid WUs).

Wow, those Sandy Bridges are really fast. My i7 980X @ 4 GHz (first host to return a valid WU in last years Calendula challenge) needs another 5 hours to complete its first set. And while I need to disable HTT for maximum throughput, SBs seem to be even more efficient with HTT enabled.

If you have i7's with turboboost enabled then use it!
How do I enable my i7 turboboost?
As I understand it Turbo Boost will only work if you are not using all your processor cores at the same time. So if you had 2 jobs running on a Quad core then Turbo Boost can turn off the 2 cores not doing anything and boost the speed on the 2 that are.
AMD have a similar thing.
If all cores are working (especially if at 100%) then there will be no turbo boost.
It is done this way so that the Thermal Limit quoted for the CPU (say 125 Watts) stays at or under that 125 Watts.
If all cores were boosted (basically an over clock) then the Thermal Envelope would rise well above 125 Watts (or 65 W, 95 W whatever the chip is to run under).
Getting too hot is a major issue with Laptops, but can still affect Desktops.
For you Ice, you can get a Turbo Boost by Overclocking your CPU.

I'm running Challenge WUs [Woodall(LLR)] on two computers. The newer has an i7 CPU @2.8GHz. On that machine the WU progress is about 1% per hour. Is that normal? It appears that the runtime to completion will be considerably longer than suggested in the "Welcome to....Challenge" messages.
Is there anything I can do to speed-up the process?

I'm running AMD Phenom IIs. One is a x4 970 @ 4.25Ghz and my times are ~40 hours and my other is a x2 560 (not unlocked) running @ 4.1Ghz finishing in ~41 hours. Both a recently finished WU on the 970 and remaining time calculations on current WUs on both boxes, show this (using CPU times x2 right at 50% completion). Could up the 560 0.1Ghz (to 4.2Ghz) and up the 970 0.15Ghz (to 4.4Ghz), and run 100% load but I don't want to risk any errors.

First educate yourself on what actually does turbo boost as it may not be what you think it is. It is a setting in the bios.
The advice was to use to to finish a few WUs ahead of time for the challenge. It will not help you doing the challenge until the you sacrifice your WUs to finish a WU or two that would not otherwise get done in time. |

If the GPUs are too important that you to waste 2 cores on it then probably not.
Probably about right times if you have hyperthreading enabled and all cores running (but you only seem to have 6). You will go faster without hyperthreading enabled but may be slower in the long term. However, finding the right combination in the middle of a challenge is probably not good idea. |

Something to ponder while waiting for your long WUs to crunch in this challenge.
Lots of new info and benchmarks on the new Bulldozer FX CPUs at http://lenzfire.com/2011/09/amd-bulldozer-fx-processors-benchmark-results-vs-core-i7-2600k-70406/. One interesting quote (with slide) is:
"The amazing power of AMD Bulldozer’s architecture can be seen here only. The new Bulldozer architecture enables ISAS, which Core i7 2600K lacks. AMD Bulldozer FX 8150 performs 56X times faster than Core i7 2600K in OCL Perf Mandelbrot. Thereby AMD Bulldozer with its FMA4 and XOP can accelerate next generation applications with complex mathematical calculations by 56 times more than Intel Core i7 2600K."
With the OFFICIAL (finally) release date set for Oct. 12, the long long wait is almost over. I'm hoping to fill my AM3+ socket ASAP (finances willing).

Not familiar with that CPU, but I'd say it's in the right ballpark. Generally the Phenom II's are roughly equivalent to a Core 2 CPU, and you're running about 70% faster than my Q6600. That seems about right.
For these workunits, 40 to 100 hours is where most CPUs should finish, with some very old machines taking a lot longer, and a very, very few coming in around the 24 hours mark. (Those machines would have brand new, very expensive CPUs with significant overclocking. They're probably all Intel right now, too, although AMD has some new silicon coming out soon.)

For quads, I'd say clock speed. But I don't know if memory bandwidth might be choking at that number of threads running at the same time. Try limiting the i7-970 to 7 threads and see if that helps. Since LLR doesn't really have benefit from HT, I prefer to run it slightly above the physical core count to make sure it doesn't have any slack. But going above that probably wouldn't help throughput. |

Does anyone have any suggestions for why an i7-970 running 10 cores would take 50% longer to complete a WU compared to an i7-950 running 7 cores?
What is more important, memory speed or clock speed?
Maybe.
I'm guessing a 970 is a 6-core CPU while the 950 is a 4-core? (Ok, I looked that up, so it's not a guess anymore.) With the 970, with 10 WUs running, assuming the WUs don't rotate between cores (that assumption is probably false, but let's go with it anyway) you have two of the cores running one WU each (i.e., without hyperthreading), and the other four cores running two WUs each (with hyperthreading).
The 950, likewise, would be running 3 cores with HT on and 1 core with HT off.
The WUs on the non-HT cores would complete in roughly half the time that the WUs on the HT cores.
Essentially, since both CPUs are running with less the full utilization (which would be all WUs running with HT on) and with more than 50% utilization (which would be with all cores running with HT off), some WUs are going to run at speeds that are double what the other WUs are running at.
Now, I would expect that the WUs would be swapping back and forth between the fast cores and the slow cores, so in the end they aught to all be about the same speed, but for some reason it looks like that's not happening here. Perhaps the operating system you're using doesn't swap tasks between cores as often as Windows does, or you've got some settings that are keeping tasks locked to a single core.

@Michael Goetz what do you think about that?
With LLR, on a hyperthreaded CPU, for the challenge, I recommend running without HT (i.e., 4/8). See a previous post in this thread by me for the detailed explanation.
For non-challenge running, or for sieves, run with HT on (8/8 -- unless you're also running a GPU WU, in which case you might -- or might not -- want to reserve one core for the GPU, depending on your preferences. I never reserved a core for the GPU.)
With an LLR WU, you'll get the same RAC whether HT is on or off. However, you may get more challenge points with HT off (4/8) -- and with such long WUs as we have during this challenge, the percentage difference could be non-trivial.
With sieves, you'll get a higher RAC with HT on (8/8), so you definitely want HT turned on for processing the CPU based sieves.

Thanks for the suggestions. Both machines are running win7-64 so no difference there. 970 has 3x4GB ram, the 950 has 3x2GB ram. The 970 is also clocked 5% faster than the 950 so naturally I'd expect it to be slight faster rather than 50% slower. All tasks on each machine finish in about the same time.
Just to throw something else into the mix, when running Riesel sieve or SGS it has been performing as expected, ie the 970 is about 5% faster than the 950.
I've dropped boinc down to 8 cores now to see if that makes a difference. Perhaps as suggested it's hitting a memory bandwidth bottleneck on these longer WUs. |

Horde beware! The herd just got a lost cow back and it's crunching with a vengeance! :P
Ut oh - would that lost cow be Amberjr - they just kicked in and jumped to the top of our little list..
I was more referring to myself ;) Couldn't crunch from Friday till that post.

Given that the timings are consistent, the HT explanation doesn't fit.
50% isn't going to be easily explained away by memory issues, either.
What I would take a look at is the power settings for the slow machine. Make sure it's not set to power saver mode and is running the CPU at a slower clock rate when you're not using the machine, or when the CPU gets hot. There is a setting that switches between "when the CPU gets hot, spin the fan faster" and "when the CPU gets hot, slow the CPU down".
The only other thing I can think of that could cause that kind of degradation is that something other than BOINC is running. You're not also running folding@home or something like that on your computer, right? Or a virtual machine? Or anything else that might be using up 50% of your CPU cycles?
Both machines ARE desktops, right? The slow machine isn't a laptop?

Well, as much as it pains me, I'm glad you are now crunching :)

Speaking of memory bottlenecks,
I am running a Phenom II x6 1055T overclocked to 3.4 ghz. I have four sticks of 2gig DDR2 memory running at 800mhz (stock).
My first six Woodall w/u's took a lot longer than I expected (~246,000 seconds).
Now I am only running four Woodall's to see if my times decrease; I'll post my results in a follow-up 50+ hours from now ;)
Here's the question:
Is there a way to assign each instance of LLR to a specific stick of memory? My gut feeling is that all of my work units are being crunched on a single stick of memory, thus creating a traffic jam, especially so because I'm stuck with DDR2.
If this were possible, would it make a difference?
