Welcome to the Chant at the Moon Day Challenge
The sixth challenge of the 2023 Series will be a 3-day challenge celebrating Chant at the Moon Day! The challenge will be offered on the AP27 application, beginning 15 August 02:00 UTC and ending 18 August 02:00 UTC.
Dear reader, let's embark on a short, sweet journey into a realm of oddities with the annual August 15th celebration of Chant at the Moon Day. You see, this festive anomaly was born from the moonlit orchards of Stemilt – not a usual fruit company, mind you, but an enterprise that is one with the cosmos, quite literally a half-mile closer to the moon. It was kindled by the charismatic genius, Kyle Mathison, a cherry farmer who walked the path less treaded, reaching beyond the mundane into lunar mysteries. He aligned his cherry harvests with the moon's cycles, confidently professing that the gravitational pull heightened the cherries' sweetness.
Over time, this lunar serenade has somehow slipped into the calendar, turning heads and raising voices worldwide in a joyous chorus to harmonize with the orbits of the celestial bodies. So, as this year's Chant at the Moon Day approaches, remember that no contribution to our grand, moon-led concert is too small or insignificant. Every voice is vital, as a prime Riemann Harmonic component to the resonant frequency of life itself. Now go forth and add your own unique chant, converging the melody that echoes across the moonlit sky. (Read more)
To participate in the challenge:
- Wait until the challenge timeframe starts (or set your BOINC Client download schedule accordingly), as tasks issued before the challenge will not count.
- In your PrimeGrid preferences section, select only the Arithmetic Progression of Primes 27 project.
Important reminders:
- The typical deadline for some of these WUs is longer than the challenge time-frame, so make sure your computer is able to return the WUs within 3 days. Only tasks issued AFTER the start time and returned BEFORE the finish time will be counted.
- At the Conclusion of the Challenge: We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their tasks instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING. ABORTING tasks allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING tasks causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until tasks expire to send them out to be completed. Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thanks!
Let's talk about hardware:
As with all number crunching, excessive heat can potentially cause permanent hardware failure. Please ensure your cooling system is sufficient. Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your CPU.
Application builds are available for Linux , Windows and MacIntel CPUs and GPUs. CPU apps are only available for 64 bit CPUs. High end Nvidia GPUs will have a very large advantage.
Tasks will take ~29 hours on average for CPUs and ~11 minutes on average for GPUs. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. If you haven't run the AP app before, we strongly suggest running it before the challenge while you are monitoring the temperatures. You don't want to turn your machine into a meteor!
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.
Time zone converter:
The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section at the very top, above the countdown clock.
Scoring Information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only tasks issued AFTER 15 August 02:00 UTC and received BEFORE 18 August 02:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will be using the same scoring method as we currently use for BOINC credits. A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.[/list]
Arithmetic progressions
In mathematics, an arithmetic progression (AP) or arithmetic sequence is a sequence of numbers such that the difference between the consecutive terms is constant. For instance, the sequence 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, 15 … is an arithmetic progression with common difference of 2.
An arithmetic progression of primes is a sequence of primes with a common difference between any two successive numbers in the sequence. For example 3, 7, 11 is an arithmetic progression of 3 primes with a common difference of 4.
For an arithmetic progression (AP) of primes, AP-k is k primes of the form p + d*n for some d (the common difference between the primes) and k consecutive values of n. The above AP-3 is 3 + 4*n for n=0,1,2.

"Quite literally"? I suppose I should not try to make so much sense of it, but wouldn't moving a bit closer to the equator (they are at a latitude of about 47 degrees north, it seems) make them closer to the Moon (at least at its daily culmination), as compared going to a 0.5 mile's elevation?
Anyway, this year, the date August 15 will be too close to New Moon to make it practical to observe the astronomical body while you sing for it. This "national day" has a flaw? Anyway, maybe if they are lucky, someone will able to spot the moon before the challenge is over, a proof of the start of the month of Safar (month 2) of the Islamic calendar (in which months start when people actually see the Moon).

I'm hoping I can finally get a "26" badge during this challenge. So far, I've found 5245 APs of length 20 or longer (7379 if you include double checks) - 4 of them were AP 25s, but none of them were AP 26s :(

Starting a fresh heatwave today, just in time for the challenge.
I'll be running just 2 GPUs with reduced power targets in the hopes that the A/C can hold tight and keep my puppers cool during the daytime.

WOW.... 4090'S FTW by the looks!
People with 1 x 4090 are outcrunching all of my GPU's.
I couldn't part with AUD$2600 for a gpu though.

I've decided to pull out of the comp with my 4070ti. I came home today and the pc wasn't running. The VGA light was on the motherboard suggesting an issue with the card.
Turns out the PCI-E plug had completely melted at the PSU.
I'd say where it was plugged into that slot is completely ruined so I've used a new PCI-e cable and plugged into a different slot.
Now I'm not sure if this is the PSU that can't handle to continuous wattage drawn by AP27 or just too much wattage in general. Either way, it's not great to find melted cables in your pc.
This pc is the only one that I have which uses a Cougar Gold PSU. All my others are Corsair gold/platinum but I'm pretty sure this has happened to one of my Corsair PSU's in the past also.
Anyone have a good undervolt setting for a 4070ti?

4070Ti need 2xPCI-E 8Pin or 1xPCI-E 8Pin + 1xPCI-E 6Pin and all with quality wires at least 18AWG or better 16AWG. |

I found an undervolt setting. Using that. Looks about 10sec slower but at a much lower wattage than before. Now 170W
I'll live with that.

Then with power spikes will should be up to ~200W what should be enough from 1xPCI 8Pin. |

And all your 5 cards including 4070Ti doesn't beat 4090? |

And all your 5 cards including 4070Ti doesn't beat 4090?
Based on the times I've seen, it takes three 4070 cards to outperform a single 4090. It would take four 4060 Ti cards to do the same. If you have four 3060 Ti cards, the single 4090 will actually outperform your cards.
So yes, the 4090 is a beast and it will take an array of even relatively modern cards to compete with it on the AP27 project.

Alien88 has a single 4090 and he's in position 37 for the comp. I'm in position 44 although I must admit, I do use my 4070ti for a couple of hrs/day and then after the wiring melted I've lost a bit of ground there. On that basis, yes his/her 4090 beats my 1 x 4070ti, 1 x 3070ti, 2 x Radeon VII's, 1 x Vega 56, 1 x Radeon 280X (yes it's a slug) and also running 3 wu's on the CPU with my 9980XE.

No spikes. Max 170W. Very consistent.
I can't remember what it was pulling before I undervolted. I thought it was around 300W but I suspect that might have been a bit higher due to the failing wiring.
I also applied an undervolt to my 3070ti which is now using 227W without much fluctuation.
Would you believe, it now runs faster (was around 320sec now 310sec) That could be down to the memory clock boost that I applied.
3070ti - 900mV @ 1900Mhz & 10250Mhz on the memory.
4070ti - 900mV @ 2600Mhz & 11250Mhz on the memory.
Temps and power draw much better.

The scary thing is, I wasn't running the CPU so there was no extra heat from that AND I run my GPU's stock out of the box.

Chooka, glad your PSU safely shut your system down. :(
My 4090 was completing tasks in less than 90 seconds at 100% power, 9% slower when limited to 75% power via MSI Afterburner. (Win10, AMD 7950X cpu)
In comparison, my 2080Ti was taking about 9.5 minutes. (Win10, AMD 5900X cpu) |

It actually didn't shut down my pc. My pc was running though it had rebooted. When I turned my monitor on there was output for a couple of seconds then nothing. That was when i noticed the light on the motherboard.
This is actually the second time this has happened. The last time was with an R9 280X.
It's quite shocking that this was just a stock 4070ti running AP27.
I'm not even game to check the cables on my other pc with the 3070ti which draws even more power. I probably should check them but I'm back to CPU crunching only for the time being as electricity prices are killing me. :(

yeah, the 4090 is a beast for AP27. I picked this up my 4090 a month or two ago and it's been great for this. I got a decent deal on an open box 4090 from Microcenter and decided to do it, previously was using a 2070 Super. |

I know people are asking, Was the New Moon actually observed during the challenge? The answer is yes. On https://www.moonsighting.com/1445sfr.html, I see the moon was sighted from Mauritius in the (local) evening of Thursday 17 August, 2023. This would be the afternoon of Thursday according to UTC. It is therefore safe to conclude that the moon was spotted before the challenge ended. /JeppeSN |
