On 25 Dec 2011 13:31:28 UTC, PrimeGrid's Sophie Germain Prime Search found World Record Twin Primes: 3756801695685*2^666669±1
The twin primes are 200,700 digits long, eclipsing the previous record of 100,355 digits. They will enter Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database ranked 1st for twins. This is PrimeGrid's third record twin.
The discovery was made by Timothy D. Winslow of the United States using an Intel Core i7 920 @ 2.67GHz with 8 GB RAM running Windows 7 Ultimate. This computer, using LLR, took 9 minutes and 21 seconds to complete the primality tests of both primes. Timothy is a member of The Knights Who Say Ni! team.
The prime was verified on 26 Dec 2011 1:58:19 UTC, by Brage E. Elliott of the United States. For more details, please see the official announcement.

I knew I had found another prime yesterday when I saw it in the pending list, but I never thought it was a Twin Prime. I woke up this AM to see an e-mail stating I found a Prime number and thought it odd because I was doing SGS to get my Ruby and knew SGS was no longer charting. I didn't read the e-mail immediately as I have a routine I go through before tackling e-mail. That routine had me stop at PrimeGrid. Then I saw my name highlighted and I froze.
I am still speechless a couple hours later after reading this news. Persistence paid off. I wonder if they'll make a special SGS badge for me to show I found the Twin Prime now that the project is essentially over?
Congrats to PrimeGrid for being the project that has the ability to make someone like me a world record holder (for now).

Wow, congrats!
I was wondering if twin would be found before now sieved (prepared) ranges are exhausted.
A week later after I decided I had enough Sophie for now, here we come...

It is great that we found this prime not long after it fell off of the Top5000 list. Now we can all move on and just focus on PPS :)

It's a twin, not a Sophie Germain. It's not at all clear from the wording of the Life Expectancy post whether SGS will stop because of this. Furthermore, that post explicitly states that if an SG prime is found, SGS would shift to a different search range rather than ending.
I haven't heard anything official on this, so I guess we just wait for word from above.

Official word on continuing SGS:
The Sophie Germain Prime Search will continue to search the remainder of the sieved search space to hopefully find a Sophie Germain Prime.
So SGS marches on...

Yes, but also:
Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) will be tested until a Twin and/or SG prime is found.
...which may have confused some.

Just curious why the main PG page still shows the old Twin Prime but not this one as a Significant Prime? |
