Anyone know what's happened to Free-DC?
I sent a pm to Bok yesterday and have not had a reply.

Indeed, my webserver has crashed and I'm on vacation - 350 miles away. Not back until Sunday. I managed to redirect free-dc.org temporarily at least..
Walked a non tech friend through a hard reboot remotely but no effect :(
My DB server should still be running ok, it's much more resilient. The webserver needs a rebuild anyway..

Enjoy the break, Bok. Life is more important than a few web pages being off line for a couple of days.
Edit:
Crumbs - just as I posted this, I saw all the signatures come back - what a bonus!
2nd Edit:
Then they disappeared again.

Yikes, it's just a week rife with bad luck for the BOINC world - MilkyWay is down, DNETC is down, Virtual Prarie is MIA (or AWOL?) and now Free-DC has disappeared. At least we know why!
Enjoy your vacation Bok. Hopefully upon returning you'll be reinvigorated enough to improve the site lots, though I fail to see what really needs improvement.

It's back... just got back from a 6.5 drive and checked the box. Needed a manual fsck of the / filesystem. Seems ok but I think I'll replace it sometime this week anyway. I have a few spare drives ready to go into it as it is..
Thanks for the patience.. All the stats themselves were still running in the meantime on the database server :)
And I do have quite a few ideas on improvements...

Kind of. Still getting I/O errors so I tried doing some partition copies onto a new drive but some parts are failing.
I've brought it back up again for now and will be re-installing tonight. Actually I'll be installing a new webserver on older hardware, then once that is running, I'll re-install the current one.
This way I'll have a hot spare. Could do with some more memory and probably a better mobo/cpu but it'll have to do for now. Current webserver is much better spec.

Thanks Bok.
Now a small request if possible. Would it be possible to stop the random background on each account refresh? Was just wondering. Some of the backgrounds are nice and some are just hard to read.
I know I may be the only person asking for this so if it's an issue no problem.
thanks again for getting the site back and feeding our little brains.

I believe that your request should be directed to Rytis, since the account page is controlled here at PG and the random sig. backgrounds are just a rotating call to Free DC from the PG pages.

Scott is correct.
I did move some of the themes out of the 'general' population so to speak so that they would not appear here.
If someone would like to put a list together of the acceptable themes I could block them together and Rytis could keep the random nature within that block??
Quite a few of them are by request so don't always suit everyone :)
Still fixing up a few bits and pieces right now (though I really need to work!)

Almost all of the complaints are due to readability of text, so if the color of text could be changed (yellow or green instead of white as an example), some of the objections may go away.

And another curiosity if Bok or any other Free-DC admin are reading. According to http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=team&proj=pgrid&team=2280 AtP overtake our good friends the Cows but according to http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=team&proj=pgrid&team=103 we don't. Not a criticism by any means it is just I'd expect some symmetry.

Looks like an extended powercut on friday knocked everything out. My firewall and DB server did not come back up cleanly and were waiting on a manual fsck. Got home last night after a 10hr drive back from Orlando (where my son's hockey team won the Orlando MLK Championship at the Squirt level ! :) ) and got it all up and running again. Some small issues with the stats I'll need to correct manually today but nothing major..

His home page is now showing the "I-just-installed-Apache" page, so he's re-installed the webserver. Whether that was by design or not I don't know.
On the plus side, that would seem to indicate that Bok is actively working on fixing the problem right now.

Yes, had a bad hardware failure. Looks like either the mobo or the CPU as I'm getting CPU errors in the kernel. Replaced the CPU with another I had but still the same, so I've rebuilt the webserver on my quad opteron system. It's almost done copying everything over so not much longer I think.
Database server was unaffected so everything has been accumulating just fine..

And I just ordered a new core-i5 with mobo and 8Gb Ram to repalce it. I'll leave the quad opty as a backup server once it's in.
Looking for a replacement cpu mounting bracket for an AM2 board as it snapped on another webserver I had setup. This one with a good PhenomII setup. It's about time I had some backup options ready to go if/when this happens again!

Bok,
Sorry to hear about all the problems. That kind of thing is always a nuisance to fix.
I have a suggestion to try on the the old mobo. I used to have to do this regularly back in the S-100 bus days, but haven't done this in 10 or 20 years...
Grab a #2 pencil, and take the ram off the motherboard. Clean the gold contacts on the memory modules with the pencil's eraser. I was always amazed at how much crud an eraser would remove from the edge connector contacts, especially since gold doesn't really corrode all that much.
I don't know if it will help any, but it only takes a couple of minutes to try.
Either way, good luck putting everything back together, and thanks for everything that you do!
Mike

Yes. Thank you for all you do Bok. Any ETA on when you'll be back up?
It's especially useful for the PG sub-projects... I love that too a lot.
And BIG thanks for NOT censoring projects like BOINCstats does now. You are a news & statitistcs reporting/publishing site (as well as other things) similar to any free press. But Willy is giving in to out side pressure/influence from DA to ban a certain side project by GPUgrid under the ruse of 'not a real project that's inefficient in it's way of getting donations and gives (maybe too much in DA's eyes?) credit while doing it', but really it interferes with his (DA's) cozy relationship with Charity Engine and allowing them to censor projects in their DA approve altering of the BOINC code (and you can't add ANY new projects after installing that version of BOINC). So please don't ever give in to outside forces and keep doing the great job you always do.
BIG BIG THANKS,
NeoMetal*

BIG BIG THANKS,

Which version of Boinc is this? Or is this a piece of non Boinc software? I ask because I had a problem trying to add a Boinc Project to one of the Boinc versions, it said "Peer certificate cannot be authenticated with known CA certificates"! I have never seen this before and it is a project I have been crunching actively for for a while now, WCG!! It is Boinc version 6.12.34 and I just moved on to a different project, which it added with no trouble, so no big deal but still strange! |

It's a customized version you get when you install Charity Engine. It overwrites any other normal version and can't be uninstalled without losing all projects forcing you to install a normal BOINC version from scratch again. You can read about it here:

Just a word about running ANY web-crawling DC project. I have nothing against such a project (I used to participate in one in BOINC years ago), but there's something REALLY important everyone should know before letting one of those run on your computers.
Running ONE of them is fine. It uses very little bandwidth.
Running MORE THAN ONE is essentially creating a DDOS attack on your own Internet connection from the inside. Run enough of them and your Internet connection will get clogged up.
I found that out the hard way.
If enough people on your ISP run such a DC program, it will clog the common pipe for everyone. This is especially important for people with Cable TV internet connections because lots of people share the same connection.
These things are a good idea in theory, but a horrible bandwidth consumer when considered in the aggregate. The intentions may be good, but the results are just as bad as an intentional DDOS attack.
If CE is actually going to launch one of those, they are almost certainly going to get sued by people suffering damages from this. That will probably include nearly every big ISP on the planet.
This is going to be fun to watch from the sidelines.
A serious word of warning to anyone running CE from work: if you value your job, don't run this. This web crawler will probably bring your office internet connection to a crawl. Even if you have permission to run it (or are in the position to grant such permission), doing so is not going to look good on your annual review! While the program is probably designed to minimize network usage, it can only do that on the single computer it is running on. The program can prevent itself from adversely affecting the network it's running on, but it can't measure (or prevent) slowing down the downstream internet connection as a result of multiple computers running the web crawler.
Compared to home networks, offices have lots more computers and much smaller Internet pipes, so it's really easy to clog the connection. Doing that for a non-business purpose can easily be cause for termination of employment.

[snip]
Also, if you are running this at home, you may fall foul of your AUP as a lot of ISPs don't allow spidering.
Even worse, you are running a commercial application (because the CE customer is paying for it) and that's likely to be instant termination.
No idea why this topic is in this thread, but come back Free-DC, I have new milestones to check! :)
