Welcome to the Marie-Sophie Germain Challenge

Marie-Sophie Germain was born on April 1, 1776, in Paris, France. She was an extraordinary "French mathematician who made important contributions to the fields of differential geometry and number theory and to the study of Fermat's Last Theorem." (Wiki)

Because of the gender prejudices of the time, her early work was submitted under the pseudonym of M. LeBlanc. Later work was finally submitted under her own name and on 8 January 1816, she became the first woman to win a prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. While some consider her work lacking in rigor, almost all agree that it was from the lack of a formal education that was denied to her based on her gender.

The modern view generally acknowledges that although Sophie had great talent as a mathematician, her haphazard education had left her without the strong base she needed to truly excel. Louis Bucciarelli and Nancy Dworsky, Germain's biographers, summarize as follows: “All the evidence argues that Sophie Germain had a mathematical brilliance that never reached fruition due to a lack of rigorous training available only to men."(Wiki)

What better way to pay tribute to Sophie Germain than to find a prime with her namesake. Finding a World Record Sophie Germain prime would be incredible and even more amazing if it was found during the Challenge. :) Hey, it's possible. NOTE: A twin prime is also possible in this search because of the quad sieve.

While the Sophie Gemain prime remains elusive, a byproduct of the search are single primes. The last SGS (LLR) Challenge found over 100 of these. We expect about the same this time around.

A 2 day Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) application. To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 1 April 2011 18:00 UTC and end 3 April 2011 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 bit, Windows 32 bit and MacIntel. These applications will be sent to 64 bit clients. As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~15 minutes on fast/newer computers and 25+ minutes on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 1 April 2011 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 3 April 2011 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will use the "prime score" method which is based on the n value (k*b^n-1) to score the challenge. The only difference is that the primary and double checker of a WU will receive the same score.

Therefore, each completed WU will earn a unique score based on its n value. The higher the n, the higher the score. This is different than BOINC cobblestones! A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

About the Sophie Germain Prime Search

A prime number p is called a Sophie Germain prime if 2p + 1 is also prime. For example, 5 is a Sophie Germain prime because it is prime and 2 × 5 + 1 = 11, is also prime. These numbers are named after Marie-Sophie Germain, an extraordinary "French mathematician who made important contributions to the fields of differential geometry and number theory and to the study of Fermat's Last Theorem." (Wiki)

We'll be searching the form k*2^n-1. If it is prime, then we'll check k*2^n+1, k*2^(n-1)-1, & k*2^(n+1)-1. We are able to do this because a quad sieve was performed for this search. This sieve ensured that k*2^n-1, k*2^n+1, k*2^(n-1)-1, & k*2^(n+1)-1 did not have any small prime divisors. The opportunity to find SG's and Twins in the same sieve file is appealing. However, we "expect" to find a Sophie Germain prime first.

This quad sieve was prepared quite some time ago; so it was readily available. Here are some stats for the search:

k range: 1<k<41T
n=666666 (actual 666666-666685)
sieve depth: p=200T
candidates remaining: 34,190,344

Probability of one or more significant pair = 80.1%
Probability of one or more SG = 66.7%
Probability of one or more Twin = 42.3%

Approximate WU length:
Athlon64 2.1Ghz - ~2000 secs (~33.3 minutes)
C2D 2.1 Ghz - ~1015 secs (~16.9 minutes) per core
C2Q 2.4 GHz - ~880 secs (~14.7 minutes) per core
C2Q 3.2 GHz - ~600 secs (~10.0 minutes) per core

What is LLR?

The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n − 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:

Automatic Prime Submissions

NOTE: Due to the validator issues two weeks ago, the prime back log still has not been resolved. Those primes must be cleared first before new primes can be submitted. We apologize for the extended delay in addressing this problem. EDIT: As of 9 April, prime submission has resumed.

The best way to make sure your primes are submitted in a timely manner is to give PrimeGrid permission to submit the primes on your behalf to the Prime Pages.

To do this, please edit your PrimeGrid preferences page to give PrimeGrid permission to submit. Name and last name (surname) are required by the Prime Pages to report primes.

If you do not wish to submit primes using your name, but wish to give PrimeGrid permission to submit, please enter "Anonymous" in the name field. As with all prime discoveries, the double checker will be given an opportunity to report before the prime. As a last resort, it is submitted anonymously.

For those who already have a Prime Pages account from previous prime efforts can also participate in this auto-reporting. No access to your Prime Pages prover account is needed...just permission (and name you used at the Prime Pages) to report on the PrimeGrid preferences page.

Thank you and best of luck to everyone!

How to Join the Challenge

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Sophie Germain Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. Also, set "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" to no to guarantee that no other work will be sent. The challenge will begin 1 April 2011 18:00 UTC and end 3 April 2011 18:00 UTC.

Application builds are available for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
  • Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
  • Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel

Note: As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.

Time zone converter:

Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.

Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start.

What to expect at Challenge start

The server always gets hit hard at the beginning of the Challenge. However, we will be using the same procedure that we've used for the past three years which has been very successful. A few hours before the start (1 April 2011 18:00 UTC) "max cache" will be dropped. Additionally, "max to send" will be dropped. Anyone attempting to request more will be met with "max cache" messages.

We'll raise the front page buffer before the start of the Challenge. These settings will be adjusted as necessary. Afterwards, as conditions allow, we'll raise "max cache". We'll continue to increase "max cache" when the server can handle it.

This method allows the greatest opportunity for the most clients to get work. Even if it's just 1 task for the first few minutes, at least the client is crunching. Past Challenges have shown that clients have an excellent chance to reach "max cache" before their first task is complete. We expect the same this time.

Strategies for starting the Challenge

Depending on a variety of factors, different strategies work for different users. Here are just a few to consider:

  • large farm, user can be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences to a fast WU project such as PPS (LLR)
-At Challenge start, update PrimeGrid preferences and only select Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 PPS (LLR) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
-After all machines have work, increase Maintain enough work for an additional
  • large farm, user NOT able to be present at start
-Same connection settings as above except choose Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project before the start
-At worse, you'll only be 1 SGS (LLR) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.
  • a few computers, user can be present at start
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select Sophie Germain Pirme Search (LLR) project
-Set computers to "No New Tasks" for PrimeGrid
-At Challenge Start, update computers to "Allow New Tasks"
  • a few computers, user NOT able to be present at start
-Set Computer is connected to the Internet about every to 0 days
-Set Maintain enough work for an additional to 0 days
-Change PrimeGrid preferences and only select Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project
-At worse, you'll only be 1 SGS (LLR) WU late on each core starting the Challenge.

NOTE: This presumes you have all other BOINC projects suspended.

Best of Luck to everyone!

A Friendly Reminder

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~10 minutes on fast/newer computers and 25+ minutes on slower/older computers. Although these are relatively short WU's, it is still important to monitor your machines for heat. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it.

Restricted airflow is one of the primary reasons for overheating. Take the time to monitor the fans and review the dust buildup. If needed, give your computer a good cleaning. It will thank you by running cooler and producing valid results. :) Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Special Note

If you have not run SGS (LLR) since the dates below, it is advised that you run at least one task before the Challenge start. The LLR application is quite a bit larger than the previous one.

6 Feb 2011 | 19:14:53 UTC - Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
29 Nov 2010 | 21:03:21 UTC - Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU
29 Nov 2010 | 20:45:32 UTC - Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel

Doing this in advance will free up resources to download WU's instead of the LLR application at Challenge start. :)

..........NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock...........

At risk of being sent to my early grave ..... The clock referred to on the left of the Challenge countdown is 4 mins fast, thats compared to Internet time checks on three different computers, and four different time-check clocks.

Not the end of life on Planet Earth as we know it .... but might prevent some esoteric discussion if it could be synchronised. Potentially several thousand WUs could be downloaded in the four mins prior to actual UTC start time, and all be invalid if that time is faster than server time, because they were downloaded early. If that happens ..... ouch.

EDIT : A horrible thought just occured, it would also mean (potentially) a few thousand at the end being made invalid as well, when the Chrunchers thought they were ok.

4 hours to go!!!

Please once again review the "Welcome" post as well as the "How to Join" post so you can be informed and make any last minute adjustments that are necessary.

An hour before the Challenge, we begin to monitor the Meebo chat room at the bottom of the forum page. If at any time PrimeGrid becomes unresponsive, you can still access the Meebo chat room externally here: http://www.meebo.com/room/primegrid/

Before the start, the Subproject stats on the Server Status page will be disabled as will the 24 hour stats on the bottom of the front page. Also, the Top Primes Finder page will be disabled. This is all done to free up as much resources as possible to allow the server to send and receive work. With these short WU's and the increased competition, we expect a very high volume at start.

Stats will be available on the front page next to the clock within 30 minutes after the start.

BOINCstats provides hourly updates of Project Challenges. There you can view user and team credit and ranking trends.

Just have to say thanks for hosting these challenges.

They give me a chance to configure/interact with my machines, instead of just blindly crunching 24/7. :)

Is the credit fixed at 13.91 for SGS or is this the maximum credit one could/would get?
Just curious...

Yay, forum is responsive again :) Got in at the start. Actually, got in before the start because I forgot to factor in the clock change... still, easier to fix being early than late. Now let's find some primes!

It's anthropomorphizing, but I feel like I've got a little team here, all whirring away together. I think they were so excited that they couldn't sleep last night :)

Well, that and their Power Settings don't allow for Sleep Mode...

Nothing like the start of challenge to cause everything to freeze... then unfreeze then freeze back...

Looks like the server is working great however.

Bit late for this one as I slept in (In Australia the Challenge starts at 0400 in the morning of the 2nd of April) so I have missed about 4 or so hours.
Never mind all cores now working on the challenge.

Looking forward to getting some Primes (I only have one so far (not in SGS) and it was a DC) so I don't lay claim to any as yet.

Found that one of my Linux computers has only 4 work units showing in the account manager, even though it has downloaded between 100 and 200 work units.
I keep getting the message that it has "reached the maximum number of tasks in progress".

it would appear that all of the downloaded work never actually got to my computer and now I have 200 ghost WUs under my account that I can't process and no else can either.

No error messages to indicate there was a problem but I now have a zero cache on that computer, only getting 1 WU when another finishes.

At least it is getting work.

BOINC you either like it or don't but it does make life more interesting.

Conan.

Found that one of my Linux computers has only 4 work units showing in the account manager, even though it has downloaded between 100 and 200 work units.
I keep getting the message that it has "reached the maximum number of tasks in progress".

On the Tasks tab, to the left, do you have a button that says "Show all tasks"? You may have selected to show only active tasks.

G'Day Gomeyer,
you know your Boinc.

After I had reset and then detached and reattached, I then noticed that button. I don't use it so it did not occur to me it could be the problem.
When it still only showed 4 tasks running I then saw that button.
Upon pressing it all my tasks appeared and I thought "You drongo why didn't you do that before"?

So I found the problem 5 minutes before I came back to this thread and saw your post, thanks.

I noticed my i-7 'hotbox' was requesting new tasks every 10sec or so - always refused due to max limit of tasks in progress - I checked my 'additional work-buffer' was only set to 1 day... - but a quick calc...
(120 tasks/8 cores * 0.5hours = only 7 hours!)
...shows why Boinc is always hungry!
It sounds counter-intuitive but I believe u can drastically reduce pressure on the servers by greatly increasing the task-limit! This will quickly shut up all those "hungry-chicks" crying for "more-food"!

In the meantime, I would suggest everybody reduce their Additional-Work-Buffer value to below 0.1 days to Stop the Begging!!!

Not sure about the cache settings but I have 649 pending wu's and now only 4 pending gcw sieves. I suppose that means the server is working hard to keep up. I have however noticed that it seems to be validating in batches.

Looks to me that even though the validator is being taxed, the server as a whole is performing very well... one big indicator, I can post to this thread :)

That's normal for a challenge ;)
You get your challenge points as soon as you report your tasks back. Challenge points for wrong results (if validation fails) will be deducted later. That's the reason for the delay until the results are official after every LLR challenge (especially the ones with the longer tasks).

By the way: +4 cores...

Isn't it possible to add the count of returned results into the challenge-rankings ?
Also the total count of results during the challenge ?
?

All WU's are counted and added to stats.

Yes i know :) but i think we only see a abstract number of points in the standings... if there where more information everybody should know where he stands realistic.
I wish number of units and number of devices ( of better number of cores ) so you can see where you stand within people with same number of devices....
maybe a point/device index....
I think its not very difficult to create... you have all these data.

Actually, I think that might be hard to do since lots of people choose not to allow their systems to be seen for whatever reason and publishing as part of the challenge would go against that choice.

Just my opinion.

OK, you are right, but than maybe only people who publicize they number of devices...

The issue is that the system gets enough load during these challenges not to add another few layers to the back end computing on the server. Things already get behind, like the validator, upload/download, etc. I think the challenge points are fine as they are.

Now... i run 2 devices... Alexus78 have 81x more points than i, so i consider he runs... 160 devices :)
But thats not the problem... i think the most "normal" participants run 1-4 devices and have no problem to publicize this number... so its not very difficult to make a challenge stats for these people with number of devices..

3 hours remain!

Final preparations are ongoing now for the conclusion of the Challenge. For those "moving on" after the Challenge AND have a full cache of work now (3 hours worth), it might be a good time to set "no new work".

Please update your clients early and often to get those completed WU's reported and counted. Don't wait till the end with a large cache of results to submit.

p.s. Anyone watching the team battle for the top spot? WOW!!!

-----------------------------------------------------

A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed. Therefore, the Challenge will not be considered final until all quorum's affecting scoring positions are completed. Because of this, we have a "clean up" period where the goal is to complete these quorums.

We hope for a fast "clean-up". If everyone can remember to either complete their cache or ABORT their WU's, then we'll be able to finalize earlier rather than later. Expect up to a week or more before results become final.

Good Luck to everyone as we finish these last remaining hours...

Thank you. :)

Looking for something to do after the Challenge?
(along side the "clean up" which should be relatively quick)

PrimeGrid is currently seeking help in supporting the "Five or Bust" project in closing out their search. In February this year, they found the final PRP to complete their solution in the dual Sierpinski problem. It's rare that a conjecture prime project finishes in such a timely manner. However, now it's an opportunity for PrimeGrid to help them close it out.

The dual Sierpinski problem has been chosen as PRPNet's project of the month for April. The goal will be to complete the entire double check effort before their PROJECT COMPLETION CELEBRATION on 7 May 2011. With the double check complete, the Sloane sequence A067760, a(n) = "least positive k such that (2n+1)+2^k is prime, or 0 if no such k exists", will be established presuming that the 20 identified probable primes are actually prime.

This is an extremely TALL order to complete in a month. However, any progress towards this goal would be GREAT. Please consider adding a core or two or ten to this noteworthy cause. The project will run from 1 April to 30 April (or until complete). PSA credit is available.

To participate, please add the following server to your prpclient.ini file:

server=5oB:100:1:pgllr.mine.nu:13000

Stats

New to PRPNet?
Please see the Welcome to PRPNet thread. PRPNet is just as easy and quick to install as BOINC…just a different interface. By installing PRPNet, you can also participate in other specialized prime search projects at PrimeGrid not available in BOINC.

Thank you for your consideration.

29th, I didn't think I would do that good

Around 2680 WU's waiting for validation and a hand full of validation inconclusive

Great Challenge

Congrats to the Ukraine team...... Way to Go.

Hope everyone managed to take their final dump in time. Provisional 81st here so that beats my PPS LLR position. Back to badge hunting...

Preliminary data

Another good showing for the Marie-Sophie Germain Prime Search Challenge. The server once again held up exceptionally well. Other than the validator falling behind, there were no issues. As SGS (LLR) is the shortest task project, it appears that we'll be able to easily handle all future challenges from now on. :) The extra RAM continues to pay big dividends.

It was exciting to see the top teams go neck and neck to the wire. However, it wasn't just the top two teams. Many other positions were closely fought for through both the individual and team rankings. Well done everyone!!!

While the Challenge is officially over, the "clean up" process now begins. If you have the resources to help, please see: The "Clean Up" Phase below. All that is required is to continue crunching Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) to complete the aborted and timed-out resends.

Official results are probably a 12-16 days away, but here is some preliminary data to ponder. :)

Over 1.3M tasks were completed resulting in over 11.3M Challenge points awarded. This is an average of ~664K tasks per day ranking it in the top 6 Challenges. As for primes, we'll need a few days to process the data. A lot of extra SG testing is left to do on the found primes to see if an SG or twin was found.

Top Challenges in regards to tasks completed in a 24 hour period:

1M tasks 3-6 February 2011 PPS LLR Year of the Rabbit
813K tasks 25 July 2010 PPSE LLR Full Moon
800K tasks 14-17 February 2010 PPS LLR Year of the Tiger
745K tasks 2-3 October 2009 PPS LLR Harvest Festival
719K tasks 18 November 2010 SGS LLR Leonids
664K tasks 3 April 2011 SGS LLR Marie-Sophie Germain
550K tasks 15 March 2009 PPS LLR Ides Of March

325 teams and 2063 individuals participated in the Challenge.

Thank you to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope you had fun!

The preliminary top 10 in each category are listed below. Note: scores are not final as tasks later determined to be invalid will be deducted from the total score.

The "Clean Up" Phase

Past observation has shown that a quick "clean up" phase is primarily based on how many "timed out" tasks there are. We expect this to be a relatively quick "clean up". Immediately after the Challenge, the initial "clean up" handles all the aborted tasks. Then, for the next 4 days, "timed out" tasks are the focus of the "clean up". After those 4 days, then tasks that have "timed out" twice will be the focus...and so on. The Challenge will not be considered final until all quorums affecting scoring positions are completed.

The dilemma of only doing Challenge tasks is that after the initial "clean up" of aborted tasks, the buffer would remain at 0 until a "timed out" task was returned. Hosts that only have SGS (LLR) selected would sit idle until a "timed out" task was recycled. Therefore, work is always made available to keep hosts from going idle.

A couple of measures are taken to maximize the opportunity for Challenge tasks to be sent out first and to minimize new work. First, new work will have a longer deadline. The task with the shorter deadline will be crunched first. Second, the buffer will be set initially at 1K so that at most, there's only 1K new tasks at any given time.

If one participates in the "clean up", almost certainly new work will be processed. To minimize this, observe the following key times:

  • Any time the Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) buffer on the front page is above 1K, resends are available.
  • Most work sent out right after the Challenge completes will be recycled "aborted tasks"...most likely for the first 24-48 hours.
  • 4 days (7 April 18:00 UTC) after the Challenge completes, another wave of resends typically are available ("timed out" from abandoned tasks at the end of the Challenge).

As long as the buffer on the front page is at 1K or below, there's enough resources participating in the "clean up". Additional resources will not speed up the process.

We greatly appreciate any help in the "clean-up" process. However, we fully understand the need/desire to "move on".

Yes, congratulations to Ukraine!!! I wasn't going to enter this competition (too busy eating chocolate), but I came in half way through to support Ukraine and will stay with this winning team for the next competition or few.

Jolly good show to one and all! Тоже всех поздравляю!

Rats do jump ship even when it's not sinking....

That's a disgusting thing to say. There is absolutely nothing wrong with people changing teams and its digusting to call anyone involved with a team a rat.

I will have to beg an exception there my good Colonel :) Aggie The Pew is named after a rat :) Although in the circumstances you are referring too, I would have to agree with you in principle.

However, Aggie The Pew is a team from and for rats :)

Hey I finished in 100th place so I get my first individual points, err I should say 1.25 points.

Good on me.

My team Cobar Spiders finished at 43rd so we should get 10 points I think for a total of 15.

Watch out you big hitters I is a comin for ya
(sorry for the American Hill Billy like talking there but it seemed appropriate).

Thanks for a good challenge and looking forward to the next one.

Conan.

Well you will get at least 99th place (SG-Booster is not eligible). Plus depending on how close you are to people above you, you could gain spots if any of their pending units are invalid and points are removed from their totals. Of course same could happen to you.

Wait the 4-6 weeks for the clean up, see where you finally end up then celebrate.

I'm with the rest of the vermin horde on this one.

And while it may be better for a team recruitment thread than here we welcome any support that any one feels that they want to give and if they decide to move on elsewhere at any time then that also is pretty fine.

Anyway Aggie The Pew had a great time and we are looking forward to showing how a handful of random amateurs and a rat can whop ass in a challenge near you soon.

Go Aggie The Pew

Clean up Progress

The validator has finally caught up and the work buffer reached 1K. It has been since been increased to 4K. All the aborted tasks have been cleaned up. Now it's just completing the work in progress and timed out tasks. Considering there were over 1.3M tasks completed during the Challenge, these numbers are pretty good.

Currently there are 32802 outstanding Challenge tasks, of which, 20462 are in scoring positions...affecting the outcome of 17 team positions and 73 individual positions.

The first round of time-outs will be fully recycled by 7 April 18:00 UTC.

Thanks to everyone for helping out with the clean up.

History
4 April: 32802 tasks outstanding; 20462 in scoring positions (17 team, 73 individual

p.s. Now that the clean up is under control, please remember to check out PRPNet's project of the month for April.

There are currently 15 participants active in the dual Sierpinski problem effort mentioned earlier in this thread. Thank you to all who have switched over from the Challenge. However, we'll need at least 4x's that amount if we wish to gift wrap this present to 5oB by 7 May 2011 (their project completion party). NOTE: The Cinco de Mayo Challenge starts 5 May so we should shoot for that date instead. :)

Please consider donating a core or two to the effort. If you are in search for your PSA badge (or upgrade the one you have), now is a good opportunity to get that done as well as give to a worthy cause. :) PSA credit is available.

At this stage in the testing, about 120 cores need to be active. This number will only increase as testing times continue to increase. As of this post, a WU is taking about 2 hr 45 minutes to complete. At the end of the search, testing times will increase to about 48 hours per WU. Therefore, we need to tackle as much of this as soon as possible.

    120 users donating 1 core
    60 users donating 2 cores
    40 users donating 3 cores
    30 users donating 4 cores
    20 users donating 6 cores
    15 users donating 8 cores

If anyone needs help setting up PRPNet, PM me and I can provide an individualized "pre-set" package. All you'll have to do is download, double click a couple of times and be quickly contributing to the project. All I need is the following:

    email=your@email.here
    userid=PG_username
clientid=clientID (can be anything you want...does NOT have to be PG clientID)
teamid=teamname (see here for teams already participating)
OS, 32/64bit, and how many cores you wish to run.

Check out stats to see progress.

PRPNet's Project of the Month - April

What an EXCELLENT response. Thank you!!! From 15 participants yesterday to 30 in less than 24 hours. This will make for good progress in the dual Sierpinski problem effort mentioned earlier in this thread.

Thank you for the help and please spread the word to keep the support coming. Another doubling of participants would put us in the catbird seat. :D

Please remember that we are shooting for 5 May so everyone can be ready for the Cinco de Mayo Challenge. Also, Phil Moore will be submitting a short paper on the dual Sierpinski problem effort and will be including names of contributors. So here's a chance to be recognized as well. ;)

EDIT: As of this post, testing times are approaching 4 hours for faster hosts and 8 hours for slower hosts.

Please consider donating a core or two to the effort. If you are in search for your PSA badge (or upgrade the one you have), now is a good opportunity to get that done as well as give to a worthy cause. :) PSA credit is available.

It would be better for the next challenges to add cross-links from
http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/YYYY_N/top_users.html
to
http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/YYYY_N/top_teams.html
and backward.

What you think about this?

I have 24 ghost WUs - almost all of these expire 7 Apr 2011 | 20:55:18 UTC and the last 2 will expire 8 Apr 2011 | 10:51:47 UTC. So this is just a brief interlude to crunch 5oB - less than 23K candidates to go!

I currently have 31 PPS reports and 4 SGPS reports waiting (with
credit for 42 + 8, including primes and doublechecks). John is saying
that none of these primes found since reporting was suspended
are "in danger" of dropping out of Top5000 range --- over on the
"number crunching" forum, in the "n=666K thread". Scott Brown's
backlog is presumably worse. -Bruce*

I also have one of these ghost WUs. These are probably due to communications issues that prevented your and other hosts from actually receiving the work assigned. As far as I know, there is nothing you can do about it except wait until these WUs expire. Hopefully these get caught on the next round so we only have to wait until 12th April when these expire.

Apart from that problem, the cleanup appears to be going very well because there did not seem to be a excess number of WUs in the queue and no server spikes after the first round of time-outs was fully recycled (7 April 18:00 UTC).

I forgot to mention that PSA credit is currently being awarded so I understand the delays on the updates.

The results are Final!

After a relatively quick "clean-up", the results are officially final. Challenge points have been awarded and the overall Challenge series standings have been updated.

Over 120 single primes were returned during the Challenge. Unfortunately, no luck with finding a Sophie Germain or twin prime. Prime submission has started again. If you are showing a prime on your account page, expect it to be submitted within the week. Please consider choosing Automatic Prime Submission to help facilitate this process.

Congratulations to Ukraine as the top team and Alexus78 as the top individual. Remember, the top 100 individual and top 50 team places earn points for this Challenge.

Thank you again to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope to see you at the Cinco de Mayo Challenge. Come join us 5-13 May for an 8 day celebration on The Riesel Problem (LLR) application! Currently, there are 61 k's remaining that need to be eliminated.
