Welcome to the Back to the Future Challenge
PrimeGrid’s Challenge series continues with the "Back to the Future Challenge". We are very pleased and excited to announce that a private donor has made an anonymous "matching funds" offer. All donations made from now through the end of this Challenge will be matched 1:1 (up to the total amount needed for the new server). This is a wonderful opportunity for PrimeGrid and its entire community. A new server is definitely needed to support PrimeGrid's growth and to continue the Challenge series on all projects.
We are journeying back to PrimeGrid's most successful project so far, the Woodall Prime Search, to help us prepare for the future. Testing for Woodall primes is no longer a "walk in the park." These potential Mega Primes are over 1,000,000 digits in length and take a lot of computing power to process. The last Woodall prime was found on 21 December 2007 by PrimeGrid user Matthew J. Thompson; official announcement
Please come join us in an attempt to find the next record Woodall prime. Although a significant prime was found leading up to the Dog Days of Summer Challenge, we have yet to hit one during a Challenge. Maybe our luck will change on this one. :) A 14 day Challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid’s Woodall Prime Search LLR application.
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Woodall Prime Search project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 13 September 2008 18:00 UTC and end 27 September 2008 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 bit and Windows 32 bit. These applications will be sent to 64 bit clients. As with all LLR application projects, there is no advantage of 64 bit over 32 bit.
So come ONE, come ALL and DONATE as little or as much as you like. Just know that any amount will be matched!!! :D
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU’s will take ~15 hours on fast/newer computers and 48+ hours on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

Scoring Information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 13 September 2008 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 27 September 2008 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will use the "prime score" method which is based on the n value (n*b^n-1) to score the challenge. The only difference is that the primary and double checker of a WU will receive the same score.
Therefore, each completed WU will earn a unique score based on its n value. The higher the n, the higher the score. This is different than BOINC cobblestones! However, quorum of 2 is still needed to award Challenge score. NOTE: We are working on removing the quorum requirement for scoring.
UPDATE: quorum has been removed - i.e. no wingman. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, scores will be removed.
For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.
About Woodall Prime Search
Woodall Numbers (sometimes called Cullen numbers 'of the second kind') are positive integers of the form Wn = n*2^n-1, where n is also a positive integer greater than zero. Woodall numbers that are prime are called Woodall primes (or Cullen primes of the second kind).
The Woodall numbers Wn are primes for the following n:
2, 3, 6, 30, 75, 81, 115, 123, 249, 362, 384, 462, 512, 751, 822, 5312, 7755, 9531, 12379, 15822, 18885, 22971, 23005, 98726, 143018, 151023, 667071, 1195203, 1268979, 1467763, 2013992, 2367906, and 3752948 and composite for all other n less than 4500000.
It is conjectured that there are infinitely many such primes. Currently, PirmeGrid is testing for Woodall primes in the n=5.1M level (M=mega, 10^6) goal. The last prime was found at n=3,752,948.
For more information on Woodall numbers, please visit the following sites:
What is LLR?
The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n − 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penné that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:

I am totally down with the Woodall challenge!
I know that some don’t like long challenges, but I run marathons so I am totally on board with this one!
And may I say, as a person with only one little computer, and leading a team with only 2 members (3 computers total) the idea isn’t to make the most points or crunch the most data, the goal is to move the project along a few steps further.
And as for the matching donation funds is concerned, as a previous donor, I am down for another $50 CDN (whatever that is in Euro’s). How much are you down for? (Heck, 2 euros, matched by the anon donor, means 4 euros. It's all good, and don't tell me you can't spare a couple bucks, euro;s, dollars, rubles, pesos or whatever!)
Let’s all crunch like crazy from the 13th on. (Well, assuming that the boys and girls at CERN don’t end the world on the 10th )

Just donated, but I realized I should have asked this first. My donation was to the new server. Should I instead have donated to the colocation costs instead? That is, if everyone donates to the server, would the match be ultimately less, or is the match only for server donations?

Hello.
I am totally new to this project coming from einstein, but I want to share my hosts to some other projects.
I added my Xeon 5405 to the "Back to the Future Challenge" and all of a sudden experienced these messages in the console of the server as well as in a putty-window.

Was a total mess to disconnect the client from primegrid and switch it back to einstein.
The server is actively cooled and had ~44° C core-temp via motherboard sensor - the internalt diode as well as the FB-DIMM diode doesn't function with 2.6.18 oder 2.6.21 kernels, but nothing to worry about i think and HDD-temp is green also:
# hddtemp /dev/sd[abcd]
/dev/sda: Hitachi HDP725025GLA380: 36°C
/dev/sdb: Hitachi HDP725025GLA380: 35°C
/dev/sdc: SAMSUNG SP2504C: 37°C
/dev/sdd: SAMSUNG SP2504C: 37°C
So what went wrong here? Should i consider new RAM?

Based on those numbers, estimation is way off. Your CPU time and % complete show about a 29 hour WU.

In my case, the estimate was way too low, so my BM cached more work than I will be able to crunch within deadline. I hope I won't have to return too many workunits. Sorry!

My estimations have also been really high (e.g. 127 hrs estimate for a 20-hr WU). And they don't resolve themselves until the WU is 100% done.

Yeah. I'm doing one Woodall just to join the fun. It started at roughly 110 hrs, went as high as 125-ish. Currently it's 27% through after 12h30, but it still projects 76 more hours before it finishes.

Don’t stress too much about how long BOINC estimates the time: The estimate for my machine (1.9 gHz AMD) started off at 200 + hours but is actually taking only 17 or so.

John, can you confirm that we need to get to half of the difference (100% less 32.2%) on the required Euro 2000 (that is, Euro 678) and the anonymous donor will make good the remaining Euro678?

Yes, that is correct. :) So technically, the progress bar needs to reach "at least" 66.1% and the donor's matching funds will make it 100%.

Looks like there's a FFT length change near n=5,150,000. The first WUs were completed in about 15 hours on the quad @ 3,2GHz, now they are over 20 hours. :O

Yes thats true. I did a check and it should be on 5,150,000-5,170,000 on Intel and ~5,4M on AMD

The donation bar is up to 43.3% and I think I read that it needs to make it to 66.1% before the matching funds kicks in.
Roughly 450 euros.
Ohhh, a nice shiny new server. Able to create and spit out wu’s just as fast as you overclocked lunatics can crunch ‘em. Wouldn’t that be nice.

Update
Quorum has been removed for Challenge scoring - i.e. no wingman needed. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
Also note that this is a 14 day Challenge. Therefore, the Challenge Series points are greater and positions 1-40 will earn points.
looks like most of the results are going into pending, and all are set for a quorum of two. Is this something that has changed, will the pending results still count for the challenge score if they are validated after it's over?
Just curious, haven't done this here before.

For this Challenge, scoring is not based on cobblestones. The pending credit you see is for cobblestones and will require a quorum of 2 to be validated and credit granted. This is normal BOINC crediting behavior for PrimeGrid's LLR projects.
Challenge scoring is based on the "prime score" method AND does not need a quorum of 2. The points you see in the Challenge stats are not cobblestones. Please see the Scoring Information section in the first post of this thread for more details.
Thanks for participating in the Challenge and good luck!

One of my machines gets the same - actually since Friday, as I could find out.
It doesn't matter if I change the subproject, just the text reported changes.
(For the time being I set this one to PPS LLR)
I tried everything to come round the problem, but no success at all (deleting PrimeGrid and re-joining the project, un- and reinstall BOINC....)
It's only ONE machine out of some, but this one shows the problem consequently.
Even more strange: After re-installation ONE single WU was downloaded and processed, all subsequent job requests were denied with the same message.
Regards
Joe

Last time I successfully got a WU from PG for this host was at 17:23 (GMT-4) on 9/19.
This is a dual-core AMD laptop, running CPU Limited to 90% (and has been doing that for at least a week!), and I just noticed today that only one core was busy with BOINC. I've set all the other projects usually running on this machine to No New Work during the challenge.
Other hosts on my account appear to be getting work.

The problem persits here as well (actually still trying with PPS LLR, but the subproject doesn't matter at all).
Computer ID is 74492
It's an AMD Athlon64 3000+ - but I ran another Athlon during the weekend with no problem at all (71873 + 70701).
All others run well - using Woodall or PPS LLR or any other subproject.

This morning, one of my crunchers is getting
9/22/2008 7:54:39 AM 1059 Message from server: No work is available for LLR (Woodall)
Help!
Mark
Mark
I discovered the issue, which was a preference to keep at least 1.5 GB free on disk space. I had recently copied a large file to my local disk, which put the free space available at 1.3 GB.
After I moved some files around to free up disk space, a WU was successfully downloaded to this box, and the 2nd CPU core is now running!
However, BOINC never told me why it wouldn't download work. And given that I was only running PG for the challenge meant that I couldn't tell if it was project specific or BOINC.

That's sad, but true. Fortunately 6.3.x Manager will already explicitely display the free amount of the disk, usable by BOINC (graphically as another pie in the "total disk usage" cake).
Unfortunately when this amount comes down to zero, current 6.3.x will not inform about it - the info is again skipped! (to be reported and hopefully patched)

A new server is in PrimeGrid's future!
The Back to the Future Challenge has ended. The primary objective was accomplished...to raise funds for a new server. Thanks to the help of an anonymous donor as well as the hundreds of users who participated in the Challenge, we now have the funds to purchase a new server. This ensures continued growth at PrimeGrid as well as more project flexibility for future Challenges. In addition, we'll be able to further diversify the prime projects here at PrimeGrid. In the next few days or so Rytis will have more information about the server.
As always, we are searching for those very elusive mega primes. Unfortunately, another victory for them as they have avoided discovery again. Rest assured we will continue. :)
The secondary objective was to reach n=5.5M. We came up a little short at n=5.44M, but nevertheless, great progress!!! As can be seen in this Woodall Daily WU graph, over 6X's the daily average was achieved...an amazing accomplishment. Over 8000 WU's or 16,000 results (double checks) of these HUGE WU's were completed by 204 teams and 1108 individuals.
Unlike the last Challenge, we do not anticipate a long wait for the results to become final. During this challenge, there has only been a 3% inconclusive rate. Spread across the entire challenge, this will have a minimal impact on the standings. However, there are a few close positions that we'll monitor.
With that said, it's completely reasonable to congratulate BOINCstats as the top team and lunarcom as the top individual. The newcomers to the top of the leaderboards were unexpected, yet very nice to see. The result of this will make the overall Challenge Series standings (Participants | Teams) a very close race now. Please note that the top 40 places will earn points for this Challenge.
Again, the server held up well. The long Woodall WU's were just what the it needed. Hopefully this will be the last Challenge on this server. :D The next Challenge is tentatively set for late October, and it's dependent on the progress of the new server. Anticipate either a 24 or 48 hour Challenge.
Thank you again to everyone for your participation in the Challenge as well as the donation drive. We appreciate your help and hope you had fun!

Even with a low error rate, we still have many positions that are separated by less than 3 WU's. Each day results come in and complete the WU's...bringing us one step closer.
Although we did not anticipate a long wait, we were proven wrong. With so many tight positions, we want to make sure all is fair. Hopefully we'll be able to finalize soon.
BTW, the top 5 positions are final. :)

Thanks for the update, John. Do you need any of us to add Woodall's back as a priority to clear this out quickly (in addition to the server relief)?

AT LAST!!!! The results are FINAL!
We grossly underestimated that such a small error rate would have such a great impact on finalizing the Challenge. We apologize for this and appreciate everyone's patience.
203 teams and 1093 individuals participated
The Challenge Points stats are official. Congratulations to BOINCstats as the top team and lunarcom as the top individual. Remember, the top 40 places earn points for this Challenge.
The next Challenge is set for 14-16 November. The project will be the Proth Prime Search project. Information can be found here: The Prime Time Challenge
Thank you again to everyone. We appreciate your participation and hope you had fun!
