I saw the video - didn't know it would have such an effect on ths graphs though! Amazing to see us get such a good mention like that!
Edit: TRP sv has had a boost also as people get that by default.

I actually made the topic because the exact same thing happened when WR Mersenne prime was found (though the image was lost), so I wondered if this was to happen again...
And guess what: it did! | |

well for me and other new members is their a sticky for common etiquette; my main curiosity is for running different WU's. (I selected AP27, PPSE, SOB, 3 sieve's, GFN 15, GFN 16, GFN 17 low, GFN 17 mega, GFN 22, and give me any work if none available.)
Do most people just select all? Is it wrong to not sieve? (I'd always sieve anyways).

If you want to help on a little bit of everything, but don't want the trouble of constantly changing your preferences, selecting lot's of projects is definitely a way...
But most people that actually pay attention to what they are crunching usually only select 1 or 2 projects at a time, either for getting a particular badge or to get optimal work for their hardware. Anyone can crunch whatever they feel like it, but if you are a badge hunter like me and many others, you might want to just crunch one type of CPU and GPU project at time so that you can focus your efforts on getting badges as fast as possible.
Looking at your computers, I can give you the folllowing quick tips:
-Don't bother with AP27 for the iGPUs, the software will straight up not work. That's just a headsup,, the server should know that on it's own and not send you tasks. CPU AP27 is fine, though.
-I'd suggest NOT crunching GFN 22. Your iGPUs are slow. Like, REALLY slow for such huge tasks, it's probably going to take 2 weeks or more to complete just a single task (this is just a guess, though). Up to GFN 19 or 20 should still be fine, but I wouldn't go higher than that. Again, feel free to crunch them, but I advise not to. Oh, and if GPU crunching is slow.. then don't even think about crunching those tasks on the CPU. The fastest of CPUs are already snails at those and aren't recommended for such tasks, let alone non-cutting edge tech.
-I also suggest avoiding SoB (and by extension, CUL and WOO). Just like with GFN 22, those tasks are BIG, and your AMD CPUs lack the hardware support to make them less enormous, while the mobile Intel one is just going to melt when it tries to do that due to the lack of cooling.
Everything else should be doable.

I left SOB and updated GFN22 to be gpu only, I will abort it if it pops onto my intel tablet haha, probably my amd6 laptop too as 2GHz is slow, but my home computer even though it's a cheap one is 3.5Ghz and 12gb ram so it shouldn't be too bad I hope. I want to run each one even if only once. I also updated AP27 to cpu only and aborted a task as it was running on gpu and got upto 11% and stalled. Thanks, I think I'm going to badge hunt after I get 1 cycle of every program.
Edit: I understand my GPU is vastly under powered on my A10 compared to it's CPU. I'll try and see and if it doesn't look do able I will abort and unselect it until I upgrade to a better computer which should be in 4~ months

Welcome to all the new blood, fantastic to see. Lots of fun to be had, lots to learn. Remember to keep your machines cool & monitor temps. Tip: if there's a radiator in the room, turn it off.
I do know if you have Intel with AVX, PSP LLR requires a push at this time.

I am a new participant as well because I saw this mentioned on the Numberphile video. Right now I have three machines that I have access to where I can run items but am trying to find more.
I have been just running the default sieve as I presumed that is where the most help was needed. I do have some questions: Does the default task change periodically and what, other that a project completion causes that to change? Also will the server only deliver tasks to my computers that are reasonable for the hardware I have?
Thanks in advance, I am pleased to be a part of this effort.

I can only give an unofficial answer, but the server giving out sieve was chosen as a safe option regardless of the hardware. The tests that check if a number is prime or not is much more stressful, and some of them can take a very long time (days, weeks...), so this also prevents giving heavy tasks to someone running a laptop part time for example.

The official answer is that mackerel's answer is correct.
TRP-Sieve is sent out by default because it's the safest, least intrusive task, and it's fairly short.
Other tasks will cause your CPU to potentially run much hotter, which not only might cause problems, but will certainly make the computer noisier because the fans are spinning faster.
We also don't want new users to get assigned a first task that will run for months and months, which can certainly happen on really slow computers if they try to run the larger tasks.
TRP-Sieve isn't a high priority, but it's a great task to give to newcomers until they've gone and done some reading and understand more about what all the different tasks are and their properties.
Also will the server only deliver tasks to my computers that are reasonable for the hardware I have?
Nope, you're free to use your computer however you wish, reasonable or not. :)
With a few exceptions, you're free to choose whatever you like. We do NOT try to decide whether your computer is fast enough to complete the task in a reasonable amount of time. The only exceptions are that there are some minimum requirements for certain tasks. The GPU version of AP27 requires a minimum of 1.5GB of video memory, for example. We've also recently decided to no longer offer a CPU version of one of the longest tasks (GFN-22), and that is now only available to computers that have usable GPUs.
