Good News!!!

A CUDA23 application has been released for 32 bit Windows (will run on 64 bit) and for 64 bit Linux. Below are some considerations:

  • Linux version may experience a GPU slowdown while CPU is at full load. This is believed to be a CUDA/OS specific problem. Please post if you experience this.
  • The GUI in windows will be less responsive while the app is running.
  • Sieving/primality testing strikes at the GPU weaknesses. Therefore, the application, while the fastest at PrimeGrid, does not compare to some of the other projects where the code is better suited for the GPU's. As such, credit will be much lower than what you might experience at other projects. Nevertheless, you now have one more "device" to crunch on at PrimeGrid. :) Enjoy!!!

Please post your GPU observations/questions here.

A special thanks to Gerrit Slomma (roadrunner_gs) and Bryan Little (mfl0p). Without their efforts, this would not have become a reality!!!

Under Ubuntu 9.10 (amd64) a AP26 GPU WU needs nearly one hour to complete on a GTX260 with 4 AP26 WUs running concurrently on the quad core CPU. If it runs alone it only needs about 8 minutes to complete. I currently see this behaviour with the released app too.

10min on GTX260 under Win7 64bit, running with 4 WCG WUs. I hope the app is running faster on later versions ;)

Running now on 9800 GT, Vista64.

1 K takes about 130 sec. Is this mfl0p's latest app that was in the testing thread? 1 K was about 104 sec then.

Definitely some slowness in GUI.

Claimed credit: 0.11 :)

The runtime estimate is an order of magnitude too low. First estimate was 59 sec for a full task. Reality on this system is 13 minutes. The low estimate plays havoc with other subprojects; a recently started CWSieve task now displays 31 hours to completion (it's more like 2.5 hours). Please fix this.

However, Great work!

I just downloaded 20 to test out...so far so good. I will report times and any problems with them...

I am running twin GTX 260s (MSI Factory OC to 655), XP x64, 1 gig of RAM, and am running 4x QMC@Home at the same time...

EDIT: Results are here

Regardless of whether or not it is the difference between greater than or greater than equal to, I've got an 8600M GT which only has 256MB :(

Edit: Note that I was however able to test the application and it worked perfectly fine.

Don't have to...with 6.10.x and above it should install automatically...mine did...

Has anyone else experienced slow-down of the app while running concurrently with the CPU?

Yes...I am finishing up the last 2 of the first half of the 20 I got. After I report those I am going to suspend QMC and see if there is a speedup with only running the AP26 on the CUDA card, and nothing else on the CPU...

You are running Windows XP, right?
What is the completion time - if one could estimate it?
I can't see one hour with a GTX260 on my client - but i do have a Nehalem.

Yep, limiting BOINC to three cores dropped the K time from 133 sec to 102 sec! Didn't see this when testing standalone. Vista64 and Q9550

599-722 seconds...first 10 are done and validated...

Anything before 21:16:33 UTC is with all 4 cores loaded with QMC. Anything after that time will be just the GPUs running...XPx64, Q6600...

Seems like this is an issue on Core 2 Duo/Quad.
Could anyone verify this issue on an AMD or Nehalem?

Limiting BOINC to 3 cores on my Q9550 running karmic (Ubuntu 9.10 amd64) dropped the times from 55 Minutes down to 10 ("old" GTX 260)...

Here is one example of this (was the test app):

139147850 95223016 10 Dec 2009 12:16:12 UTC 10 Dec 2009 13:45:03 UTC Completed and validated 3,288.74 2.56 0.02 23.61 Anonymous platform

Runtime: 3288 seconds, CPU time 2.56 seconds

Here is the released app, with 3 AP26 CPU tasks running:

139147223 95222244 10 Dec 2009 18:58:36 UTC 10 Dec 2009 21:26:39 UTC Completed and validated 549.63 4.83 0.03 23.61 AP26 Search v1.00 (cuda23)

I have no "clean" example for the released app with 4 AP26 CPU tasks running since I am messing around heavily with the settings at this moment...

I don't see any slow-down. Just maybe with a 8700M GT. For this card, i think it wil be about 30 min for 1 WU.
I try with only CUDA task, and with a GTX295, it's take about 10 min.

I don't know if increasing the priority for the Linux app to normal would help. I 'reniced' the process but I have seen no effects. Maybe it's just a scheduling problem and the task is blocked.

If this would be restricted to CPUs of the Core 2 Duo/Quad-type and mfl0p's app really does need 384 MB of VRAM the root cause of this slow-down may be the memory-transfer-rate of this specific CPU-model.
The app should be non-blocking, you could verify this in the task-manager.
I would propose this: Anyone who experiences a slowdown with all CPUs assigned to crunch and running the GPU-app should post their CPU-model, GPU-model and OS to pin down this issue. (memory config would not hurt but is not that necessary i think...)

599-722 seconds...first 10 are done and validated...

Anything before 21:16:33 UTC is with all 4 cores loaded with QMC. Anything after that time will be just the GPUs running...XPx64, Q6600...

Results

With CPU unloaded, 383-424 seconds per WU...

Is there an easy wasy to tell how much VRAM is being used??

EDIT: Q6600, OC to 3.0, 1GB RAM, Dual GTX 260 (MSI Factory OC to 655mHz), XP x64

I experience slow-down if all 4 CPU-cores are working:

CPU: Q6600@2.4
S.O.: Win Vista 32 bits
GPU: GTX295

NOTE: CPU-cores on load with WCG units.

4 CPU-cores load: AP26 unit in 11 minutes aprox.
3 CPU-cores load: AP26 unit in 7 minutes aprox.
1/0 CPU-cores load: AP26 unit in 6:45 m:ss aprox.

But when I look at AP26 app. CPU usage I see it is always 0% (!!)

9800 GT 512MB GDDR3, Clock 600 MHz, Mem 900 MHz, Shader 1500 MHz
Vista64, 4 GB RAM PC2-5300 FSB:DRAM 1:1

Four CPU cores on BOINC, AP26 CUDA WU takes about 800 sec.
With three or less cores loaded, it takes about 620 sec.

I'll address some of the issues I see posted:

* Not enough VRAM message: >384 is a BOINC app plan CUDA 2.3 requirement, and since the application requires 2.3, 256MB cards like my 8500gt will have to run via app_info.xml. The CUDA AP26 program only uses about 100mb VRAM while running.

* Slowdown in certain Linux distros with fully loaded CPU: This appears to be an issue with CUDA and certain Linux versions. RHEL, for example, runs the application as it should, with no slowdown. It appears some distros are not scheduling the GPU thread as it should. I hope this issue will be fixed in the upcoming CUDA 3.0 toolkit.

* Slowdown in Windows with fully loaded CPU: This is the same problem that certain Linux distros have, except both Vista and Win7 machines I tested on would not process the GPU workunit at all.. the OS simply would not allow the CPU feeder thread to run. I had to create a work-around to make the CUDA app work in Windows without using a full CPU core. As a result, GPU workunit times may have a large deviation in runtime. Again, hopefully the next CUDA release will not have this issue with blockingsync thread scheduling.

Currently, the alternative "fix" for both Win and Linux apps would require loading a full CPU core to feed the GPU. In my opinion, that is not an option considering the speed of the GPU application.

And, finally, the CUDA app does not require large amounts of memory bandwidth to PCIE.

Does this mean that in the future it will be able to run with 256 MB video cards, or is that an impossibility?

If Rytis can possibly change PrimeGrid's CUDA23 coproc app plan to require 128MB VRAM then all compute-capable 1.1 and greater cards will work. (assuming you're not hogging the VRAM with some other application, in that case the WU will error with a cudamalloc failure).

Will there be any chance of forcing AP26 to only get CUDA WUs?

I ask this because I have 32-bit Windows (I haven't been able to get CUDA drivers to work on my 64-bit Linux), and I would like to have CPU exclusively work on LLRing and GPU to work on the AP26.

Also I'm not sure if this is related to the slowdown you are all talking about, but, I currently have 1 CUDA AP26 WU running, as well as 2 CPU AP 26 WU running, however only one of the CPU WUs is seeing any CPU time.

You can use GPU-Z 0.3.8, and there you can see it down under Sensors tab, along with GPU load usage.

Yes, your GPU is to slow: 4 MPs with 1180 MHz are only around 1180 MIPS (1/4 Instructions/clock * MPs * Freq if i read the Programming Guide correct), the 112 GFLOPS are only theoretical (fused MADD+MUL) and floats are not used in the GPU-app. Your Q9450 shows 10568 MIPS and 3600 MFLOPS per Core. Therefore your GPU is not that slow and performs very well regarding the specs.

Has anyone else experienced slow-down of the app while running concurrently with the CPU?

Yes, I am affected by this problem, but for me it seems to be an OS issue. I tried testing several WU's on the same host using both Win XP Pro 64 and also 64-bit version of Ubuntu 9.10.

Host is an Intel Core2 Duo E6850 (stock 3.0GHz overclocked to 3.40GHz) with 4GB installed memory. Video card is an 8800GT wih 512MB memory and slight overclocking. BOINC client is 6.10.18 on WinXP and 6.10.17 on Ubuntu. Windows nVidia driver version 195.62 and Linux nVidia driver version 190.42.

All tests were run with two AP26 WUs running on the CPU and one AP26 Cuda WU running concurrently.

Results using WinXP Pro 64 were an average elapsed time of 15 minutes for CPU WUs and 10 minutes elapsed time for the Cuda WU.

With no changes to any hardware configuration, and running the same type of testing (two CPU AP26 and one Cuda AP26 running concurrently) using 64-bit Linux Ubuntu 9.10 the average elapsed time for CPU WUs was 14 minutes and average elapsed time of 56 minutes for the CUDA WU.

Is there an easy wasy to tell how much VRAM is being used??

You can use GPU-Z 0.3.8, and there you can see it down under Sensors tab, along with GPU load usage.

Thanks...I was using an older version of GPU-Z...I will reload on some AP tasks and see where the VRAM usage comes out...

Ditto on a v9.04, same set up. 1st two: 7:55 and 8:04 w/ various other stuff (NFS mostly) running on the other CPU cores.

Mine straightened out the estimates after it finished 1 WU.

Well of course it did [edit: for me too], by multiplying the project's duration correction factor by ~13! I'm looking for a reasonable balance between all subprojects. This affects work fetch for other projects too!

I haven't run any CUDA tasks since, not sure if it's been fixed already.

My 9600GSO cards report as 383MB so it'll take the server side change u suggested before they get any GPU work from Prime.

I Don't know what distro RHEL is (thought I bought a tent and some mosquito repellent there once) but COULD this be the re-nicing that Debian/Ubuntu uses (schedtool, since about v8.10 in Ubuntu) to minimize the impact BOINC has on the desktop?? Since I have that rescheduling turned OFF on my dedicated Unbuntu/Ubuntu based crunchers I may not be seeing this or it's small enough that it's not bothering me.
Don't GTX-260 times of around 8 minutes with all CPU cores working suggest that I do not have this issue? Around 8:35 for a GTS-250 w/ all other cores running.
And then:
9800GT w/ all CPU cores running 10:05 and 10:34
9800GT w/ no CPU cores running 10:30

Something to try for those that are seeing this under Ubuntu/Xubuntu/Kubuntu/Mint/Debian using the standard Debian boinc-client scripts (/etc/init.d/boinc-client):

sudo gedit /etc/default/boinc-client

Change the SCHEDULE from the default of "1" to "0" and see if that fixes the issue after a restart.

# Set this to 1 to enable advanced scheduling of the BOINC core client and
# all its sub-processes (reduces the impact of BOINC on the system's
# performance).
SCHEDULE="0"

Then restart w/:
sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart

If it does, then you have a decision to make based on the usage of the machine in question. The difference between having it on or off isn't earth shattering at the desktop.

If it doesn't resolve it... oh well, it was just a guess on why I don't think I'm seeing it on a variety of quad Intels (Q66, Q67, Q94, Q9550s) under various Ubuntu versions/varients.

RHEL is Red Hat Enterprise Linux, or CentOS. I was unaware of the re-nicing feature in Ubuntu. Thanks for posting a possible fix for this "feature" that they have added. I don't see the logic behind schedtool being added to the OS. It apparently breaks the CUDA blocking sync feature. Anyone running Ubuntu, if you can try this, and post results.

And once again, re: Windows slowdown, I am aware of this, and it was the only way to get the app to run in Windows without using an entire CPU core, at this time. CUDA's CPU-thread blocking sync is "broken" in Windows, like Ubuntu, with a fully loaded CPU. If your GPU processes AP26 faster than the CPU, then it may be worthwhile for you to disable a core in BOINC and the GPU should run at full speed.

Thanx, I didn't know the acronym.

I also would be real interested for someone else to try it. It'd be nice if the fix is really this simple.

Not sure I'd really call it part of the OS as if you install boinc from Berkeley you get a different set of scripts that don't have this. It's all a part of the scripts that come from the Debian boinc_client package. Which generally I like as it adds the Debian standard command line options for status, stop, start, restart (that works). Last time I was using the Berkeley scripts the reload/restart didn't actually work (in the Dotsch/UX distro).

I'll post a reference to this post on the Debian boinc_devs list in case any of them want to take a look into it. I'm not sure of their current position on GPU support though.

The script code that actually does it is a bit over my head. Maybe it'll mean something to you. From the run level 2 started /etc/init.d/boinc-client script:
schedule()
{
log_begin_msg "Setting up scheduling for $DESC and children:"
if ! is_running; then
log_progress_msg "$NAME not running"
else

I tested it now under Windows Vista (32bit) with my Nehalem Xeon W3520:
8 CPU AP26-tasks + 1 GPU AP26-task = 50% GPU-load with GPU-Z (mem-controller load 12%) 950 s
7 CPU AP26-tasks + 1 GPU AP26-task = 74% GPU-load with GPU-Z 700 s
6 CPU AP26-tasks + 1 GPU AP26-task = 84% GPU-load with GPU-Z (mem-controller load 19%) 520 s

77 MB memory used,

New server code is compiling as I write this message. It is the latest and greatest (yeah, right) SVN version, with CUDA23 plan class modified to require only 250MB RAM, so less powerful cards should get GPU work soon.

I will also update web code to the same revision, hoping that it fixes CPU work issues that some people have been having.

We can't really fix this, because the same tasks are sent both for CPU and for GPU, with a single estimate. And then there's also a huge deviation when running on GPU...

OpenSUSE 11.2 (amd64) has the same CPU+GPU problems as Ubuntu 9.10 (amd64) in terms of the GPU app getting blocked (runtimes of 60 minutes instead of 10 minutes if all CPU cores are in use) and some additional problems...

A small hint for 64 bit OpenSUSE users out there:

If anyone is using BOINC 6.10.17 (or 6.10.24), OpenSUSE 11.2 and the NVidia drivers 190.42 and his CUDA card is not recognized try this as root or as a normal user with the sudo command inserted in front of the command line:

ln -s /usr/lib64/libcuda.so.1 /usr/lib64/libcuda.so

It seems that CUDA detection is done via dynamic linking at run-time and for whatever reason BOINC does not recognize newer CUDA versions via the libcuda.so in the BOINC directory and there is no libcuda.so link installed via the "one click" nvidia driver install.

I'm not sure, but doesn't Seti have different flops values for their cpu and cuda23 MB official apps. I run optimised with self-entered flops values in app_info so can't tell. Of course, I could make an app_info for PrimeGrid as well...

I am now receiving CUDA work units with my 8600M GT, and the only slowdown I notice is congruent with the amount of CPU the CUDA app is using on a C2D T7700.

1.46 CPUs + 1.00 GPU? Is that the adjustment? I'll better set up an app_info.xml to revert it... 0.01 CPUs are more than enough. You should more likely increase the GPU task limit from 10 to 300 as it is for the CPUs...

Currently on my system it is now taking 2.06 CPUs and 1 GPU! Before it was about 0.2 CPUs like other GPU projects.
What happened to the CUDA app 1.00 or how can I put it back to a sane value?

Oh no, I didn't mean this, sorry!

Rytis, please revert back to 0.12 CPU + 1.00 GPU or whatever it was previously. The CPU usage number should be the same for all.

Well, I told you I didn't know if it would help :) Reverting now.

All this is complicated by the fact that I don't have a CUDA-capable system, so I have to work blind on this.

No, it only has to be recompiled for i386.
The CUDA-specific code - like in windows - does not care about the bitness of the OS.
I think it is only 64-bit because i started in Linux x86_64 with cuda-sdk 2.2 - which does not support cross-compiling - and a makefile for 64-bit binary. But i could be wrong.

I could release a 32-bit version of my app but the currently productive GPU-app is from mfl0p so he has to recompile it since i do not have his code.
My app is slower but seems to not have the slow-down problem on non Red Hat-Linux-Derivates making it there as fast as mfl0p's or even faster depending on the GPU and CPU.

Could you please increase the GPU task limit for us offline crunchers? Even MW has a 24 task limit and with 8 minutes for a AP26 GPU WU 10 is a little bit low...

[Update]: Its 100 now. That's a little bit better. Thank you.

re: 32bit linux app, are there really that many 32bit CPUs that have a cuda 1.1 capable card installed? I figured no, so that was the reasoning.

Have you actually tested this on an Ubuntu machine?
During app development, I also thought I had everything about perfect but things change when the app is running under BOINC with a loaded CPU.

The 8800 GTS (320mb or 640mb) is based on the G80 chip which has only compute capability 1.0 an cannot run the AP26 apps (Collatz apps do run on these cards).

The 8800 GTS (512mb) is based on he G92 chip with compute capability 1.1 and should have no problems with the AP26 app.

I have an 8600 card running on Gentoo Linux. You would be surprised how many people run linux on 32bit systems with a low budget card.

Well, I told you I didn't know if it would help :) Reverting now.

All this is complicated by the fact that I don't have a CUDA-capable system, so I have to work blind on this.

Many thanks for the very prompt response to this!

(if this is not the place for this post Mods please feel free to move it)

If there is anyone out here that can try to help me I will be eternally in your debt!!!

I have spent 2 days trying to install the NVIDIA (downloaded from nVidia) drivers for a GTX275 and I am at a complete standstill. (I'm sure I'm missing something simple).

Info:
AuthenticAMD
AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 965 Processor [Family 16 Model 4 Stepping 2] (4 processors)
Linux 2.6.31-16-generic UBUNTU 9.10

Download from nVidia: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.42-pkg2.run

Bios recognizes the card as present.

lspci | grep -i vga
returns
01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3300 Graphics
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT200b [GeForce GTX 275] (rev a1)

The ATI is MoBo based and is working fine with my display.
The GTX will just be for CUDA based apps.

As root I installed the drivers - this was done in terminal mode GDM not running.

The driver install completed w/o error all questions were defaulted with whatever was highlighted (add 32bit compat=yes and modify xorg.conf=yes).

Should have known better on the xorg.conf and changed it to no.

Rebooted and was dumped into the infamous LOW-RES with a EE-no device found msg.

Dropped to character mode and replaced the xorg.conf with my backup copy (remembered to do that for a change) and here I sit.

I am guessing that the driver is not really installed properly or not starting properly hence the EE msg when booting.

I have scoured different public forms - LOTS of "this worked for me's" but none of them have worked for ME.

I can provide a lot more detailed info as to what I have done if someone takes pity on me.

I follow directions well - am computer literate - unix aware - but horribly, horribly lost

Is the Nvidia card plugged into anything (monitor or dummy plug)? I don't think the driver will load properly without doing that.

Try the deviceQuery of the CUDA-SDK as well as the output of "lsmod|grep nvidia" and send me the output via personal message and i see if i could help.

No - there is nothing attached - but I do have a second display that I could attach - will give that a try and let you know if anything changes.

lspci | grep -i vga

01:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon HD 3300 Graphics

The ATI is MoBo based and is working fine with my display.
The GTX will just be for CUDA based apps.

Disable the on board ATI in the BIOS so that the only display adapter present is the GTX, the drivers in my view are not loading as it is seeing the ATI device, CUDA will not run on the ATI.

My experience in the past is the only way to make this work is to have a motherboard with a GeForce 9-Series mGPUs and the GTX in the PCI slot, both are CUDA compatible and the drivers will load for both devices.

One other thing you might try...

CAN you install the older nvidia driver from the repositories... or in other words does the restricted hardware drivers applet recognize the NVID card being present at the desktop?

If it does there are some other options.

PS: And as I recall I had to do this on a live keyboard/mouse/monitor instead of via VNC or SSH.

Yup, one of my 9600GSO (reports as 383MB) cards picked up some is running them now.

First thing, excelent jump to GPU!

Can we expect an ATI version anytime soon?

I've sucessfully downloaded and ran tasks on a dual core + geforce 8400 GS, video memory in properties shows at 256 MB. Total is 1 gig graphics memory, but I guess it swaps to CPU memory when needed!

First 30 seconds to a minute puts the system to a freezing crawl, so I've set the options to do work when the user is inactive.

Initial reported completion is 30 minutes, but accurate figures will be showing up in a day or two while it crunches and I'm away.

I've tried installing via SYSTEM>ADMIN>HardwreDrivers - (and also via EnvyNG) both see that the nVida drivers are available for my hardware, appear to download whatever it is they they want, and then simply hang -no errors -no nothing. HardwareDrivers hangs up the entire system to the point that I need to force a system reset. EnvyNG will at least allow me to cancel out.
** I did try running the live CD and trying the SYSTEM>ADMIN>Hardware Drivers (knowing that it wouldn't really stick based on the need to reboot) and yup it saw the card and downloaded and installed and no complaints.

Also, based on suggestions here in this forum, I have completely disabled the mobo based ATI video, moved my monitor to the GTX card and enabled ONLY the PCIe as my video at boot.

Based on extensive off-forum help from roadrunner_gs (to whom I owe an eternal debt of gratitude), it appears that the 190.42 drivers, libraries, cuda stuff, etc. are installed and appear to be where they belong -- BUT and it is a huge BUT there are no devices defined in /dev and when manually created do not remain after rebooting.

At this point, I am afraid that I and I alone have managed to create a wonderful meal of fried Ubuntu kernel and nVidia driver stew.

If any you or anyone else have thoughts on how I can cleans this mess up - feel free to PM me.

The only solution that I can see at this point is to save my email (dates back to 2003), drain my Boinc work queue and blow the whole mess away and reinstall Ubuntu from CD. Not really something I want to do!!!!

I BE FIXED !!!!!

THANK YOU ALL for the ideas and suggestions they all seemed to fit into the puzzle!

The short version is ..... (the three of us ME, MYSELF & I had indeed created driver stew.)
And OK its not really that short - but those of you out there who understand what exactly I did - and I sure as h-ll don't - might be able to create a simple way to un-mess the messes that some of us are REALLY good at creating.

Found by accident and ran sudo /usr/bin/nvidia-uninstall

Rebooted

After the system came back up I used the following 2 commands
(which I found in one of the nVidia.com forums)

sudo dpkg-rconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
resets Xorg including the .conf file

sudo apt-get --purge remove $(dpkg -l | grep nvidia | awk '{print $2}')
gets rid of everything nVidia related (in hind site it seems to get rid of a few too many things (Hardware Drivers no longer saw the card and EnvyNG was gone)- but nothing fatal.

Rebooted

Re-installed EnvyNG and ran with the -t option
promptly got stuck in some endless loop whining about a non-intger value passed as a parameter.
Hardware Drivers now saw the card as well (some of the additional files that were downloaded with the EnvyNG install maybe? To replace items I had purged), but also got stuck in a loop (I'll bet the same loop).

So back to the 190.42 drivers downloaded from nVidia.

CTRL+ALT+F1
Login as me (not root)
sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop
sudo cp NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.42-pkg2.run /usr/src/nvidia-install

probably no real reason to do that other than I could never remember where I downloaded them to; or what they were called.
cd /usr/src
sudo sh ./nvidia-install
YES to 32 compatibility question
YES to modifying the xorg.conf

Nice quick install w/no errors or complaints

sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
CTRL+ALT+F7

Really ugly 1024x768 screen - (not LOW RES, not my usual res) YES it must be working!!

nVidia X Server Settings opened w/o complaint - fixed the screen res.

Tried deviceQuery
YES I finally had a valid install.
So quick as a bunny (before something changed its mind) I rebooted; logged in; ran the boinc manager and I had a cuda device.

NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 275 (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.3, 895MB, 674 GFLOPS peak)
(got that used for 162USD on eBay - now that it works I'd love another - never find another that cheap)

Also this seemed to be key - in least in this case - the (or a) display needs to be connected to the GTX card. It looks like my missing devices are created when the x-server starts up - I guess no monitor present means no reason to create the devices in /dev

So once again THANK YOU!!!

Few results validated on a geforce 8400. Average run time from 3 to 4 hours.
On CPU it averages 1 hour.

Boinc estimates the GPU at 5 GFLOPS, while the CPU has 2.4 Gflops and 5.4 MIPS.

The estimates for the GPU are only for fused float MUL+MAD. The app does not use float, only int and long long. Then it is much slower.

Nice app !
Thanks !

It takes me 5 to 6mn on my GTX275 (a bit OCed) on Gentoo 64b (with my Q8200 at full load)

But on my GTX260 216SP (Ubuntu64) with a 4400X2+ at full load...it takes me more than an hour ! (Damn !)
I have to check this out. (May be I need to modify my cc_config...)

But on my GTX275 It's really good !!

The time to complete times under BOINC for non-CUDA WUs is mad now that I have both types of AP26 WU running.
The prediction to complete a cpu WU are in hours now when it's around 28mins in reality. They become high priority as soon as they are downloaded. Lucky I'm only crunching for one project and working on only one sub-project on that host :)

I can understand that managing the APs to check would become more difficult but wouldn't adding the CUDA app as a seperate sub-project help?

Thank you for all the work, my GTX275 seems to love the app under windows (but tried for a week to get it running under Ubuntu KK without any success).
Pete.

If Rytis can possibly change PrimeGrid's CUDA23 coproc app plan to require 128MB VRAM then all compute-capable 1.1 and greater cards will work. (assuming you're not hogging the VRAM with some other application, in that case the WU will error with a cudamalloc failure).

Does this mean that in the future it will be able to run with 256 MB video cards, or is that an impossibility?

I have 1 9600GSO that has 384MB ram and it's the only one that doesn't work. WUs are DLed but will not start. No log messages. It works fine on GPUGRID, Collatz & SETI.

Has anyone else experienced slow-down of the app while running concurrently with the CPU?

Maybe; I don't know yet since I haven't tried running it without any other projects using the CPU.

Is there a way to have separate speed ratings for the GPU and the CPU?

Anyway, as soon as I joined the project and set it to use only GPU workunits, I got enough of those workunits to fill a two-page list. So far, close to half of them have completed, but I expect some of the rest to go past the deadline for those workunits.

They had an initial estimated time to completion of 7 minutes, but so far, the average time to completion has actually been about 2.5 hours so I may have to abort some of that initial batch when they get too close to the deadline.

A suggestion for preventing such problems in the future - for machines that have just started GPU workunits and not returned any successfully yet, limit the number of GPU workunits in progress for that machine to the number that the slowest GPU board in your database can complete in one day. If it returns the first one successfully, use the actual elapsed time for that workunit to calculate the actual number that machine can complete in a day, and immediately change the limit for that machine to the new number. If it returns at least one unsuccessful workunit first, make the change to the new limit happen slower. Later, as that machine returns more successful workunits, you can increase the limit even more.

With CPU unloaded, 383-424 seconds per WU...

Is there an easy wasy to tell how much VRAM is being used??

EDIT: Q6600, OC to 3.0, 1GB RAM, Dual GTX 260 (MSI Factory OC to 655mHz), XP x64

I've read elsewhere that a program called GPU-Z probably has that capability. I haven't tried that program, though.

NVIDIA has released “Nexus” beta for Visual Studio http://developer.nvidia.com/object/nexus.html

Would be interesting to see if this new VS windows optimised CUDA Toolkit would improve the CUDA application under windows.

Hi,

I thought I try out ap26 search with cuda support but it looks like it does not work on my system:

CPU: Core2Quad
NVIDIA DRV: NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-190.53
Card: NVIDIA 9600 GS
OS: RHEL 5.4 64 Bit
Boinc: 6.10.17

Following line is in the log's: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 9600 GS (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.1, 767MB, 120 GFLOPS peak)

Maybe I have done something wrong but should I have 4 CPU's (Quad Core) + 1 Cuda device = 5 CPU's as GPU use is enabled in boinc? Any hints?

Try updating to the latest driver. Some of the 190.xx series had some issues.

Thank you for your prompt reply and help - however NVIDIA's latest stable driver is the used one and the newest one is a beta driver: 195.30. Maybe someone has already running such a system and can post a working driver version?

Yes i do have updated to the same driver under linux today since i noticed it isn't beta anymore: 190.53.
I get the same message, too.

21-Jan-2010 22:45:34 [---] NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 260 (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.3, 895MB, 537 GFLOPS peak)
21-Jan-2010 22:45:34 [---] NVIDIA GPU 1: Quadro FX 580 (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.1, 512MB, 72 GFLOPS peak)

But that is no problem, AP26 are crunching away with mfl0p's app.
Before update i had the following message in my log and was able to crunch with my app

21-Jan-2010 22:14:09 [---] NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 260 (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2020, compute capability 1.3, 895MB, 537 GFLOPS peak)
21-Jan-2010 22:14:09 [---] NVIDIA GPU 1: Quadro FX 580 (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2020, compute capability 1.1, 512MB, 70 GFLOPS peak)

So this seems to be no problem after all.

Following line is in the log's: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 9600 GS (driver version unknown, CUDA version 2030, compute capability 1.1, 767MB, 120 GFLOPS peak)

This is normal... currently, Linux systems do not report the Nvidia driver version to BOINC.

@roadrunner_gs: performs the mfl0p's app better as the stock ap26 cuda app? Is it for download or only for testing?

Ok, so I've been trying to get this working with no luck (computation error every time). After reading this forum, am I seeing it write that you must be compute capability 1.1 for this to work?

I'm running a 8800 GTX with 768MB memory which is listed on nvidia.com as CUDA capable but when I read the messages section of boinc I saw this:

1/23/2010 2:11:18 PM NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 8800 GTX (driver version 19562, CUDA version 3000, compute capability 1.0, 768MB, 373 GFLOPS peak)

So, what I'm asking is does that mean that that card can not run AP26? Just trying to figure out if I should give up trying or if it's something I'm doing wrong.

The 8800 GTX, though a good card, cannot run the AP26 application since it is only 1.0 compute capable (same applies to 8800 GTS 320mb/640mb and 8800 Ultra that are based on the G80 chip-- applies to some Quadro cards as well). Compute capability 1.1 added (primarily) atomic functions, which are needed here (as well as at some other projects such as GPUGrid).

If you are interested in a math project where your card can run applications, you might try the Collatz project.

Still no 32-bit Linux app. I would be happy to switch from Collatz to here if there was a Linux CUDA app.
