11) Message boards : Number crunching : A Prime Chinese New Year Challenge (Message 159675)
Posted 3 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
It's all about the cloud these days by the looks bc.
All about the cloud.
Whoever throws the most money at it, wins. Some things don't change with BOINC :)

TdP will be the same.

This is definitely true -- but it was true before the cloud too. He with the most money buys the fastest computers and the most computers, regardless of whether they are owned or rented.

If anything, the cloud probably helps the little guys with fewer dollars. It's one thing to build a bunch of HEPCs with $999 CPUs and $1500 GPUs. That's a sizeable investment for most. But lots of people can throw $100 or so at a challenge.

There's probably a thesis or two in this discussion; it's certainly a complicated topic. But it's definitely not as simple as "the cloud is the root of all evil" or "the cloud is the greatest thing since sliced bread".

What I do know is that with my meager computers, and my meager budget, I can do better in challenges now than I could before the cloud was a thing. Or worse. It's my choice whether to spend or not. But that's a choice I didn't have before; always buying bleeding edge kit wasn't an option for me.

Overall, my view as one of the "little guys" is that it's a good thing. I have choice now. I like that.

As an admin, it's crystal clear, however: it drives participation way, way up.

Should there not be less than 6 hours on the clock? I thought midnight to midnight? Or is it really Noon to Noon?

The schedule originally had only dates, but no times, so they originally all said 00:00 (midnight).

The times have been assigned and the schedule reflects the actual start/end times, which for this challenge is 12:00 UTC. Noon is correct.
13) Message boards : Problems and Help : How to merge 2 accounts with the same name? (Message 159488)
Posted 8 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
I have an old BOINC account under "Ed Snell that I started on 7 Nov 2016 and ran thru 2018(hard drive failed). I could not find my old password so I opened a new BOINC account under "Ed Snell", acct. number 1540305 that I started on 9 Nov 2022 with a new custom made 16 processor gaming computer.
How do I merge the old account with my new one?? I am a member of the University of Wisconsin team.
I tried searching on "How to merge accounts" but it came up with no results

Thanks!!..Ed Snell

You could create a Team, ie the Ed Snell Team, and then both accounts would be together but Dr Who Fan is right you can't merge accounts. An Admin COULD if they were so inclined but I don't know if they even consider that here at PrimeGrid.

No, an admin can not. There would be all sorts of problems with data consistency.

16) Message boards : Number crunching : Ideas for 2023 Challenge Lineup? (Message 159291)
Posted 17 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
We're going to run out of Cullen and Woodall work in the not too distant future, so it's our intention to get the CW sieve running again so we can keep Cullen and Woodall running for the foreseeable future. The intent is to do the sieving early enough so the LLR projects don't get interrupted.

If the sieve isn't ready in time, we'll need to adjust the challenge schedule, obviously.
17) Message boards : Number crunching : Beta testing of PRST app is open on "GFN Server" (Message 159261)

Also, PRST is a native BOINC application, no wrapper is used. It's a new feature, needs to be tested thoroughly.

Nice!

19) Message boards : Wieferich and Wall-Sun-Sun Prime Search : End of WW Project - 30 day notice (Message 159088)
Posted 25 days ago by Profile Michael GoetzProject donor
Currently, WW is still visible in/on (but I'm unsure if these qualify as "stuff" :-P ):

- Fastest GPU list: http://www.primegrid.com/gpu_list.php#WW
- Task status: http://www.primegrid.com/server_status_tasks.php
- Applications: http://www.primegrid.com/apps.php

Thanks.

GPU list is an oversight, and I'll remove it.

Task status is "stuff" and will remain there.

Applications is automatic and will go away once we deactivate the WW app, which we'll do once we're sure it's safe to do so.

WW is still selectable as a project.

Yup, it's truly done. All the workunits are purged. Thanks for letting me know. I'll remove the appropriate stuff from the website soon(ish).

WW is removed from the appropriate places on the website. Let me know if I missed anything.

Results and stuff will remain in perpetuity.
