High Error Count
(Message 51940)
Posted 4094 days ago by Vid Vidmar*
I'll share this, because sometimes failures could be pretty tricky to find.
Recently I retired a mobo in one of my crunchers that started spewing out errors and occasionally completely locked up. First I thought I have a case of failing RAM. After couple of Memtest runs, errors were found, but every time they showed in different locations, which eliminated my 1st suspect. So what else could cause errors? It was by pure luck that I found the cause. While I ran Memtest, sometimes, and mostly when there were errors found, I heard a faint high-pitched sizzling sound coming from the motherboard. When I finally located its source, it turned out, that one of the capacitors near CPU socket failed and it wasn't all that bloated as they can get, which made it a bit more difficult to notice.
Well, I got a new mobo, and it's crunching on happily.

I agree, the complainers are indeed. People who are complaining: please xxxx
A little Civility Please, everybody should be free to express themselves as they Please without being called :) & told to xxxx ... You may disagree with their Opinion but they are entitled to express their Opinion none the less as much as you are ...

There's a worldwide etiquette crisis going on for at least 20 years now. And all this negativity and rudeness expressed in those three posts, tell a lot about their authors.

But, wouldn't that break it for other projects on said computers anyway?
No, You set computer venues on each project separately, so PG Computer A can be default and Other project it can be School, etc.
Thanks, will try it out. Although it's not perfect, it's still less of a hassle to write down just venues than all the sub-projects.

Another option if you are not using all the "variants":
Set Challenge setting for "School" (or other unused) and switch all participating computers to "School", then switch back to "Default" (or what ever it was) after the Challenge.
If I had a venue free... But, wouldn't that break it for other projects on said computers anyway?

I have somewhat different problem with preferences.
Each time I would like to participate in a challenge, I need to write down my settings for all the venues ( that I use to assign sub-projects according to to computer capabilities, and may change occasionally ) and select the challenge project. After the challenge is over, I need to re-enable all those settings I wrote down before. This got really tiresome for me and that's why I haven't participated in a couple of recent challenges.
I suggested a setting (checkbox) in venue/computer preferences to specify that venue/computer participates in current challenge, which would mean: "send only work for challenge. If unavailable, send work from any of otherwise specified sub-projects.". But I guess my suggestion got overlooked (it was posted in one of the recent challenge thread). I'd really like some kind of feedback this time, even if it is "You're one lazy SOB, and your idea sux!" one.

The Cinco de Mayo Challenge
(Message 36073)
Posted 4411 days ago by Vid Vidmar*
I would just like to say, that I find it quite difficult to join these challenges lately, as I always need to write down what subprojects are active on each of the venues I use for different HW/OS configurations. It would be so much easier if there would be a checkbox in (venue) preferences settings that would say and do something like this: "Automatically join to challenges? (whenever there is an active challenge, you will receive only work from that subproject)". Just an idea, I'm not quite sure if it could be done.

man ldconfig is your friend.
Basically copy those .so files in some folder ( I forgot which is default one, and default also varies between distros). If you put them in a non-default folder, edit /etc/ld.so.conf to include that folder. Run ldconfig, and you're ready to crunch away (BOINC restart may be required).

New GTX 460 -- which driver should I use?
(Message 33589)
Posted 4482 days ago by Vid Vidmar*
Running 260.99 on my newly acquired GTS 450 without any problems on Win7 64-bit.
I think the 260.xx driver problems were in Linux???
There were that problems, yes. However, yesterday I decided to try the 270.xx (still beta) driver on my Ubuntu 64 cruncher. After almost 24hrs of PPS sieving, not a single error has been observed, and crunch times are some 500s lower.

In 6 days since this thread was started, my most recent WU is at n = 619k, almost 620k. That means, current rate is about 0.6k/day. Let's see how big a leap the upcoming challenge provides.
