1) Message boards : Number crunching : LLR 3.8.20 testing (Message 105931)
Posted 2273 days ago by Profile Michael H.W. Weber
When this version of LLR goes live, you will be able to use multi threading by utilizing app_config to pass the -t switch to the app. If you are testing right now using app_info, you can specify the -t parameter in app_info. Using app_config gives you the most control over mulithreading, and is very easy to set up.

Wouldn't it be possible to avoid app_config and/or app_config by placing some additional check boxes in the web interface configuration area (check box for MT: yes/no and a number field for # of cores to be utilized)?

Thanks for the info on the app files.

As of this 6:45am US East Coast time his pc's are unhidden and he IS crunching ati units on his gpu:

He has several of these completed:
17 Jul 2015 | 10:47:43 UTC Completed and validated 1,048.73 287.85 1,993.75 Genefer
Anonymous platform (ATI GPU)

And several of these in progress:
7 Aug 2015 | 10:37:29 UTC In progress --- --- --- Genefer (World Record)
Anonymous platform (ATI GPU)

He has a CAL Hawaii (4096MB), vbox 4.3.12 () and is using Win7 64bit Ultimate on a quad core i5 pc.

Yes. That's what I said above. But what about work for the third ATI GPU project for which I could not find an app (PPS-Sieve)?

I've not had to manually download apps for any BOINC project, including PrimeGrid.

Well, that might have to do with the possibility that BOINC does not report the R9 290X appropriately? An issue happening often when e.g. using ARM systems with certain Linux distributions such as Arch.

Michael, hard to tell if it is unknown what GPU(s) are we talking about.

Running both AMD cards and nVidia cards without any need for app_info (both GFN and PPS Sieve).

If you had looked at Application page, you would have seen there are 15 different apps for PPS Sieve that covers Win, Linux na MacOs.

Hmmm, maybe I have overlooked something here, but I checked that page earlier and couldn't see information on GPU apps and those are the only ones I am interested in.

Michael.

P.S.: I did unhide my machines but I do not believe it will help you guys much.

Well, for two of the three sub-projects (GFN) I had to manually download the apps (http://www.primegrid.com/download/) and specify a configuration file. For the third (PPS-Sieve) I did not find the app at all.

1. How does this project expect support if these things have to be done manually?
2. Why is PPS-Sieve shown as an ATI GPU-supporting project when after all there appears no app to be present?

Just a short question: Yesterday I hooked up my R9 290X to PrimeGrid again but although I believe all the settings are correctly in place, I do not receive any WUs for this graphics board.
I would just like to selectively participate in the projects that employ AMD/ATI/OpenCL which are:

PPS-Sieve
GFN-Short
GFN-WR

Any idea what might be going on?

It would actually have been nice, if - at least during an active challenge - the returned WUs could be validated. For several days, this one is sitting there with no other copy handed out for validation.
Thanks.

Well, it seems that I was right. Based on the current progress bar indication and the re-calculation of the remaining WU duration, that "long" WU should finish in significantly less time than half of the original estimate on my card (approx. 60 hrs per WU). So, it should be possible to work up 2 WUs during the challenge duration...

Of course, maybe even the progress bar indication is not reliable. ;-)
And also, it might be that this WU won't be validated at all as my card is factory-overclocked (it is the MSI R9 290X LIGHTNING, which I fancy a lot because of its excellent and comparably silent cooling system).
However, so far I have not experienced any faulty WUs with other DC projects and to my experience, PrimeGrid quite certainly is not the most GPU hardware challenging DC project out there in the wild as judged by GPU temperature.

Well, I will try the long one - so far I had no problems with my 290X.

Still, what about the AMD SDK requirement? What is it good for?
I mean, the WUs download and start without complaints - that's clear - but would there be any benefit having the SDK installed?

This morning, I finally got a WU.

The runtime estimate is almost 153 hrs - is this normal for a "Genefer (World Record) 2.10" WU or isn't it rather possible that this is quite overestimated?
It sems quite long to me, because this type of WU is part of your upcoming challenge and would take 6 days to complete while the challenge itself lasts only for 8 days meaning that I can process exactly a single WU of this type during that whole challenge. ;-)

And one more question:
The website preference settings of this sub project state that "some ATI/AMD GPUs may require installation of the ATI Stream SDK". Is that required for a 290X card, does it speed up the computation?

Michael.
