1) Message boards : Generalized Fermat Prime Search : In-Progress World Record Task Marked Timeout by Server (Message 95856)
Posted 1866 days ago by David J. Liu
The problem is not about computation time but about the inconsistency in the state -- despite the periodical trickle up messages, the server somehow determined the task to be timeout. This kind of inconsistency in software is not uncommon.

According to the estimation displayed, World Record tasks take months to compute, which is much longer than their displayed deadlines. The deadlines do get pushed back from time to time, yet about half way through the computation the server declared the task time-out.

Come to think of it, this would indeed be a world record if the system remains consistent over several months to see such tasks completed.

Turns out that limiting CPU usage to 50% only improves speed slightly, so the effect of hyper-threading may differ from CPU to CPU.

It works, thanks. That seems to eliminate the overhead of task switching and improve the accuracy of estimation.

Tasks for Genefer 3.09 often come with an estimated duration of over 1000 hours and a deadline within three weeks. Tasks are not distributed across CPUs. Why do you expect one CPU to perform 1000 hours worth of computation in 500 hours?
