1) Message boards : General discussion : Advice on buying used computers (Message 147332)
Posted 212 days ago by Profile CoffeemanProject donor
I was thinking to get a couple of used computers for use with Primegrid; I have a list of cpus that support AVX-512. But on ebay and craigslist, its hard to find them.

Any advice for what the "sweet spot" is, for used computers?

Laptop or desktop?
i3, i5, or i7?
What video cards to seek or avoid (desktop)

I am looking for the most computing power per dollar, how to find that? The CPU in my laptop is an i7-1065G7, and I am also searching on ebay for used laptops that work but have broken screens; can use an external monitor.

Intel has so many cpus, I dont see why there are so many, its ridiculous!

Any advice is appreciated.

Kevin

Thanks!

I think this makes it clear. So Raspberries are better for eating.

A friend and I are thinking to setup a Raspberry Pi for Primegrid. Has anyone done that, how well does that work? I know that Intel CPUs have AVX-512 and GPUs in Desktops help a lot. But Raspberry Pi is so cheap, I could get a bunch of them.

Related: can Raspberry Pi be modified, specific to BOINC/Primegrid projects? Its an adaptable platform, so what could be done to make a dedicated machine just for these prime searches?

Thanks for you advice!
4) Message boards : Problems and Help : PrimeGrid does not seem to be working for me anymore? (Message 130531)

I see! Well thank you for answering all my questions. This Cullen task is over 90% so i will definitely let it finish.

I wonder if other new users have similar questions to what I have wondered. For example the Work Done line could mention 'from completed tasks' somehow?

I am still aiming to get a much faster desktop!

I try to keep the laptop running 24 hours but I could not tell it was doing work, so I got worried.

The phrase "For what it's worth, "making the settings very liberal", means more cpu, more memory, etc... I did not mean "allowing all projects" and in fact I have only one checked: AP27. This is just a laptop so I figured it could not run LLR.

So a week ago I unchecked Cullen, which shows as LLR and hit Update; so AP27 should be my only task. I did this several times, hitting Update, and rebooting, but Cullen is always there. It is my understanding that my little lapto can only run non-LLR projects so why is it working on Cullen - and why can't I get Cullen out of the list?

Thanks for all your help,

Kevin

For 4 days, my total work done does not change; its stuck, as if BOINC is not running? i see:

Total credit 59,316

and it never changes. I have tried to make computing settings very liberal but it does not help. Can someone check my settings?

Thanks,

Thank you all.

I am wondering if Percentile is being used here in the classic way? I am quite new yet it shows my work as the 78.2736 percentile.

The definition of Percentile would mean that I am better than 78.2736 % of all users. But I find that hard to believe... it is more likely that 78.2736 % are better than me!

So I am now sure how the word is being used here but it might be used in the opposite way of what it means.
9) Message boards : Problems and Help : Sweet Spot for hardware? Cost/Work Unit? (Message 130056)

Some people have dozens of computers. If bought new that is a considerable cost.

Wouldn't it be more cost effective to run a server-style setup, with a bunch of computers in a rack? Is that done by some? Can it be cost-effective if hardware is being bought new or would that be prohibitively expensive?

Teams could come together financially to invest in a more sophisticated setup.
