I tried taking part but my dodgy Haswell system (as mentioned before) won't run LLR without crashing, so I've set it back to Genefer on the GPU and WF/WSS on the CPU. Really wish I could help a little bit. Anyway, Go AtP!

Wow, my Haswell @ 4.4 managed to get 3 WUs in, whilst the GPU was crunching GFN20.

Good work everyone else!

I think Catullus was right when he wrote "non assis facere". I really wouldn't trouble myself about what the other person thought.

I had to google it to be sure, but I was pretty sure what "facere" might allude to :)

I don't want to get "bogged down" and go too off-topic in this challenge thread, but in Ipswich, there is a Coprolite Street. I've always wondered how many conversations have been started by new friends or partners of people who live there, who are unaware of what a coprolite is, and how exactly the reply comes back.

That phrase would sound like nonsense to people under about 20, wouldn't it? I was talking to someone who is only a bit younger than me the other day and they laughed when I told them that I had a "tower PC" but I didn't play 3D games, or design things with cutting-edge CAD software. I didn't bother telling them about PrimeGrid because they would have thought I was Rain Man or something. Which I am certainly not, and is sort of the reason I was interested in what PG was in the first place.

As I think I mentioned before, I need either a new system or some serious upgrades. My passively-cooled GPU doesn't do DP and so I bring to this challenge my mighty Haswell. That itself needs to be replaced at some point because it won't run SR5 reliably. My sloooow GPU is on GFN20, I'm trying to maximise credits over a longer period of time without doing PPS-Sieve endlessly; or I'm trying to get it to properly die, which would be a good excuse for a new PC.

I'm in, I kicked myself up the bottom and think I've got my creaking old Haswell system stable again.

Nice to see you posting again. I hope all is well

Yup, cheers. Well, obviously it's all a bit strange and miserable at the moment, but I've not been affected any more than the average person.

I stopped crunching completely for a short while, because my PC here sounded and acted like it was dying a slow death, but I finally operated on its guts and yanked a cheap, failing fan out of it. After that, though, it didn't seem to be able to run LLR, so I stuck to GFN on my GPU and WWW/WSS on the CPU. Fingers crossed that I don't start producing invalid SoB tasks now, then. I gave it a spraydust and hoover before starting it last night, and it hasn't frozen or bluescreened yet...

I will suggest, even if you go for the passive card, it'll benefit greatly from any airflow at all. So ideally your case will have some where the card would fit.

Oh yes, I've got a tower case with front>back and top airflow, I'm not starting a silent build. my current case will do, 3 of its 4 fans (2 back, one top) have been replaced by Noctuas, and I might replace the CPU cooler with a Noctua one too, as that has become noisy with slight vibration.

I was basically wondering whether it was "stupid" to get such a card, because on paper it seems such a powerful choice for something which doesn't make any noise. For the record, I have a Corsair AX760 power supply, so any power needs will be automatically taken care of - I just don't want the noise of additional fans.

I'm thinking of getting this little baby. What do you think? As you might hae assumed, I am going with a silent card; I'm aware that for £200 I could get a bit more power, but a lot more noise.

It's got a Turing core... I can't really go wrong, can I? Genuine question, I've not kept up-to-date with PG hardware matters lately, and reviews of graphics cards obviously tend to focus on gaming, which I couldn't care less about. Any problems/slowdowns with GFN?
