Welcome to the Heptadecagenarian Challenge!
The FIRST challenge of the 2022 Series will be a 3-day challenge offered on the GFN17-LOW and GFN17-MEGA subprojects, beginning 17 January 17:17 UTC and ending 20 January 17:17 UTC.
We have a lot of 17-related festivities upcoming! Well, two mostly. PrimeGrid is turning 17 this year -- it was founded in July 2005, making it one of the oldest still-active BOINC projects! And, of course, we are probably less than one challenge away from finishing all GFN17-LOW tasks. Will we find the largest GFN prime less than 1,000,000 digits? Time will tell!
On that note, be aware that we very likely will finish GFN17-LOW during the course of the challenge, so you should select both LOW and MEGA if you don't want your computers to be running idle for part of it.
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the GFN17-LOW and/or GFN17-MEGA subprojects in your PrimeGrid preferences section.
Application Builds
IMPORTANT: Overclocking -- including factory overclocking -- on Nvidia GPUs is very strongly discouraged. Even if your GPU can run other tasks without difficulty, it may be unable to run GFN tasks when overclocked.
Supported platforms:
- Windows: Nvidia GPU (OpenCL): 32 bit, AMD/ATI GPU (OpenCL): 32 bit, CPU: 64 bit, 32 bit
- Linux: Nvidia GPU (OpenCL): 32 bit, 64 bit, AMD/ATI GPU (OpenCL): 32 bit, 64 bit, CPU: 64 bit, 32 bit
- Mac: Nvidia GPU (OpenCL): 64 bit, AMD/ATI GPU (OpenCL): 64 bit, CPU: 64 bit, 32 bit
A Cautionary Reminder
ATTENTION: The primality programs Genefer (for CPUs) and GeneferOCL (for GPUs) are computationally intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your CPU, and please see this post for tips on running GFN on your GPU successfully.
As with all number crunching, excessive heat can potentially cause permanent hardware failure. Please ensure your cooling system is sufficient.
GFN17-LOW WU's are currently averaging 2 hours on CPU and 6 minutes on GPU.
GFN17-MEGA WU's are currently averaging 3 hours on CPU and 9 minutes on GPU.
For a general idea of how your GPU stacks up, you can have a look at the fastest GPUs list.
If your CPU is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Overclocking your GPU is not recommended at all for GeneferCUDA. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to run Genefer. :)
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.
Time zone converter:
The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.
Scoring information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER January 17th 17:17:00 UTC and received BEFORE January 20th 17:17:00 UTC will be considered for credit.
We will be using the same scoring method as we currently use for BOINC credits. A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING WU's alows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.
Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

Whee!
I finally scored an RTX 3080 card for not much more than we should have been paying all along (wanted a ti, but at this point, I'll take just about anything that isn't gouging my wallet), and with more luck it will show up at my house before the challenge is over.
Now to see if I can score off my final prime digit guess!

What no! I thought this could be fun. Seeing what may happen.
Are you sure impossible? Another 999999 could be possible?
Calm down - we are still talking a GFN17 low - highest one?
The thing you said is different? |

A 999999-digit GFN-17 prime (which would be uncovered in this month) is possible (but unlikely).
However, the number I linked is incredibly close to having 1 million digits. Its first many many figures are 9. There are absolutely no GFN-17 candidates that lie between it and the threshold 1 million digits. Even if you went to GFN-1 (so b2+1 instead of b131072+1), there still would not be even a single candidate in the range needed to beat the linked prime without being a mega-digit number.
So we can find a 999999-digit prime (but it is unlikely), but we cannot find one which beats the Propper-Batalov record.

In this challenge we will be using the same scoring algorithm as we use to determine BOINC credits, including bonuses! Because the score bonuses are included in the challenge score, it is advantageous to run the longer tasks if you can manage to finish them within the 10 day challenge window. This will land you a higher position in the leaderboard and therefor a higher score on the overall leaderboard.

3.
Also, the bonuses are the same, so from a scoring perspective it really doesn’t matter which you run.
However, 17-Low is almost finished, and assuming it doesn’t end before the challenge starts, it will almost certainly end in the first day of the challenge. I strongly recommend that 17-MEGA is selected so that your computer doesn’t run out of tasks during the challenge.
For this challenge, running GFN-17-LOW is optional but running GFN-17-MEGA is REQUIRED.

Once again - A BIG RED WARNING
We're going to finish GFN-17 Low subproject in this challenge. It mean that "GFN-17 LOW" subproject will RUN OUT OF TASKS DURING CHALLENGE. For sure. Anytime. May be even in first few hours.
It means:
- DO NOT SELECT ONLY "GFN-17 LOW" PROJECT in your preferences. To be on safe side, select both projects (GFN-17 Low and GFN-17 MEGA). In this mode you'll receive a random mix of both types of tasks. When GFN-17 Low will run out of work, server will send you GFN-17 MEGA tasks only. No further actions will be required.
- If you want to be risky and wish to run GFN-17 Low tasks only as long as possible, keep an eye on number of available tasks, which is displayed on main page of the site, for example:
Generalized Fermat Prime Search (n=17 low) 1986 / 287K
Currently GFN-17 Low has about 287000 tasks available. When this number goes down significantly, change your preferences and enable GFN-17 MEGA immediately! Remember that it's very dangerous, tasks can be completely drained very fast, even in few minutes, right in the beginning of the challenge.
- If your configuration is wrong and you'll run out of tasks, your computers will stay idle and you'll not receive any challenge score. Once again, a simplest way to avoid this is to select both GFN-17 Low and GFN-17 MEGA projects in your computing preferences. |

To Funny that Thousands of Low Tasks were aborted today so that will give us more to run during the Contest. :)
What is the Highest Prime that Low can find? |

What is the Highest Prime that Low can find?
Not sure if I misunderstand the question, but it goes up to (and not including) 1 million digits. So the largest prime Low could find would have 999'999 digits. Also see my thread Guess the number of digits in the LAST GFN-17-LOW prime.
If you ask about the b, it is b = 10^(999999/131072) = 42'597'773.68...
The last even integer before that is 42'597'772. However, 42597772^131072+1 is not a candidate after sieving, since it has a small factor 7*2^20+1. In the same way, b=42597770 has small factor 159*2^19+1. So you could ask about b=42597768.
Does anyone remember how deeply sieved GFN-17 (low) is?

Thanks, Yves. My PARI script did not go to p = 250·1018. However, searching for 42597768 on PrimeGrid's Discord server found an old post (I think by JimB) where it is confirmed that 42597768 survived the sieving. So 42597768131072+1 is the largest candidate of 17 Low.
Of course, many users will now run a manual Genefer test on this one to check if it is prime...

A minor correction.
Even tasks in which you're not 1st count for the challenge.
The only requirement is that the tasks be GFN-17 (either Low or Mega) are downloaded from the server and the respective result upoloaded to the server between Jan 17 17:17:00 and Jan 20 17:16:59 (UTC).

I think you have more GPUs thrown at this.
Same number of 2080Tis.
And more firepower from the other ones than my 3090. |

My poor computer with the 3090.
It is running so hot.
I had downloaded some Woo tasks - and I can't insist that them to not run.
If I set zero in the 2 settings it actually runs 2 tasks at once.
I don't like to dump tasks - but I may have to.
It isn't an option to pause the tasks as I am pretty sure I won't get any GPU tasks then.
Running 1 Woo task with the challenge I'm getting a CPU temp over 80 degrees C.
And the MB temp about 85 degrees C.
It will survive - probably.
I think MSI may not be as good as ASUS for this type of setup.
I can't know that for sure as I only have 1 ASUS MB with a 2080Ti.
I am guessing that a 3090 is very demanding of a MB. |

Only tasks received AFTER Jan 17 17:17:00 and returned BEFORE Jan 20 17:16:59 (UTC) count in the challenge.
Looking at your results I see that the GFN-17s you returned you received before Jan 17 17:17:00 (UTC). Just abort those early tasks and you'll get fresh challenge eligible tasks. |

To be eligible for this (or any) PrimeGrid challenge, a task must be both sent to you and returned by you during the challenge. All of the tasks you've returned so far were sent to you before the challenge started, and are thus ineligible.
Being first doesn't matter for challenge scoring.
If you want to participate in the challenge, I recommend aborting all the tasks whose "sent" date is earlier than 2022-01-17 17:17:00. |

I've been getting GFN-17-Mega tasks without any issues and I see, on PG front page, that there are still tasks available for Low.

There’s well over a hundred thousand GFN-17-Low tasks available, and effectively an infinite number of GFN-17-Mega tasks. If you’re not getting tasks, the most common reason is that you have another PrimeGrid task suspended.

Of those tasks that have been sent out:
4023 (1%) were aborted. [1831 (0%) / 2192 (1%) / 0 (0%)]
2267 (1%) came back with some kind of an error. [23 (0%) / 2244 (1%) / 0 (0%)]
342784 (89%) have returned a successful result. [111860 (29%) / 230925 (60%) / 0 (0%)]
35087 (9%) are still in progress. [16040 (4%) / 19046 (5%) / 0 (0%)]
Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:
30834 (9%) are pending validation. [9773 (3%) / 21062 (6%) / 0 (0%)]
311861 (91%) have been successfully validated. [102049 (30%) / 209812 (61%) / 0 (0%)]
85 (0%) were invalid. [35 (0%) / 50 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

It might be fun to have a "Last WU" badge for the user who receives (and completes) the final task on a subproject! I kind of want to know who got the last one for funsies.
I'll leave it to bigger brains to think of the best implementation, as I'm sure someone will think of a way this could encourage suboptimal behavior... |

I love it! It is dreadful! How much Windows pain we have gone through - if it could have only been this short video - bliss. |

The warning about GFN17-Low for this challenge is still in the project preferences ! |
|
|
|
Soon the section can be removed from the preferences. According to subproject status, there are 18 workunits with 40 tasks still not purged from the database. (Maybe someone has an "old" task and can still get credit if they complete it.) /JeppeSN |

There are no active tasks. We’re just waiting for work units to be purged. This includes primes, which have extended purge times. The only way there will be any more active task is if a timed-out task starts running again and trickles. That shouldn’t cause new tasks to be created, so I doubt there’s anyway to get another 17-low task. Nevertheless the selection boxes will remain until the last WU is gone, in case there’s a scenario I haven’t considered.

It wasn't so much about the section but that the challenge was still listed for Low and Mega when the challenge finished nearly 3 weeks ago. |

That will change once the next challenge is set at the current challenge, which happens after TdP.
