Welcome to the Geminids Shower Challenge
The ninth and final challenge of the 2021 Series will be a 10-day challenge marking the yearly Geminids Meteor Shower. The challenge will be offered on the GFN-21, GFN-22, and GFN-DYFL subprojects, beginning 7 December 07:00 UTC and ending 17 December 07:00 UTC.
The Geminid meteor shower – always a favorite among the annual meteor showers – should peak in 2021 on the night of Monday, December 13 into Tuesday, December 14. The Geminids are a reliable shower for those who watch around 2 a.m. local time from a dark-sky location. This year, a waxing gibbous moon will hang around most of the night, washing out the fainter meteors. Regardless, it’s always worth a look!
For more info: https://earthsky.org/astronomy-essentials/everything-you-need-to-know-geminid-meteor-shower/
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the GFN-21 and/or GFN-22 and/or GFN-DYFL subprojects in your PrimeGrid preferences section.
Note: The deadline for these WUs is longer than ten days, so make sure your computer is able to return the WUs within the challenge time-frame. Only tasks issued AFTER the start time and returned BEFORE the finish time will be counted.
Application Builds
IMPORTANT: Overclocking -- including factory overclocking -- on Nvidia GPUs is very strongly discouraged. Even if your GPU can run other tasks without difficulty, it may be unable to run GFN tasks when overclocked.
Supported platforms:
- Windows: Nvidia GPU (OpenCL): 32 bit, AMD/ATI GPU (OpenCL): 32 bit, CPU: 64 bit, 32 bit
- Linux: Nvidia GPU (OpenCL): 32 bit, 64 bit, AMD/ATI GPU (OpenCL): 32 bit, 64 bit, CPU: 64 bit, 32 bit
- Mac: Nvidia GPU (OpenCL): 64 bit, AMD/ATI GPU (OpenCL): 64 bit, CPU: 64 bit, 32 bit
A Cautionary Reminder
ATTENTION: The primality programs Genefer (for CPUs) and GeneferOCL (for GPUs) are computationally intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your CPU, and please see this post for tips on running GFN on your GPU successfully.
As with all number crunching, excessive heat can potentially cause permanent hardware failure. Please ensure your cooling system is sufficient.
GFN-21 WU's are currently averaging 14 days on CPU and 13 hours on GPU.
GFN-22 WU's are currently averaging 49 hours on GPU.
GFN-DYFL WU's are currently averaging 43 hours on GPU (but they are significantly longer tasks, usually only taken by faster GPUs).
For a general idea of how your GPU stacks up, you can have a look at the fastest GPUs list.
If your CPU is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Overclocking your GPU is not recommended at all for GeneferCUDA. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to run Genefer. :)
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.
Multi-threading optimization instructions (For GFN-21 only)
If you're running GFN-21 on a CPU and looking to maximize your computer's performance during this challenge, or when running LLR in general, you may find this information useful.
- Your mileage may vary. Before the challenge starts, take some time and experiment and see what works best on your computer.
- If you have an Intel CPU with hyperthreading, either turn off the hyperthreading in the BIOS, or set BOINC to use 50% of the processors.
[list]
- If you're using a GPU for other tasks, it may be beneficial to leave hyperthreading on in the BIOS and instead tell BOINC to use 50% of the CPU's. This will allow one of the hyperthreads to service the GPU.
Use GFN's multithreaded mode. It requires a little bit of setup, but it's worth the effort. Follow these steps:
Time zone converter:
The World Clock - Time Zone Converter
NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.
Scoring information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER December 7//thst 07:00:00 UTC and received BEFORE December 17th 07:00:00 UTC will be considered for credit.
In this challenge we will be using the same scoring algorithm as we use to determine BOINC credits, including bonuses! Because the score bonuses are included in the challenge score, it is advantageous to run the longer tasks if you can manage to finish them within the 10 day challenge window. This will land you a higher position in the leaderboard and therefor a higher score on the overall leaderboard.
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING WU's alows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.
Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

Best of Luck to everyone!

For the same GPU, the GFN-22 must be faster than the GFN-DYFL, right?
Yes, it is faster and is also fewer credits because it is a smaller number
That's entirely, 100% correct. But it's not the whole story.
GFN-22 is faster and fewer credits than DYFL, and although a part of that is because DYFL is a larger number, that doesn't explain it all.
Currently, at least on my GPU (a GTX 1060), DYFL runs about 32% longer than GFN-22. Calculating the run time based only upon the size of the numbers, I would expect only DYFL to be 26% longer.
That extra 6% is due to the difference in the speed of the transforms. OCL4 on GFN-22, and OCL5 on DYFL.
Because of the difference in transforms speeds, We decided to use a larger credit bonus for DYFL. You get an extra 25% bonus credit on DYFL.
You might ask why the bonus is 25% when the difference in transform speed is only 6%? The answer is... because Nvidia sucks.
When DYFL was started, Nvidia produced GPUs with amazing double precision floating point performance. DP speed is what is needed for scientific calculations. It's not so important for games. Which do you think is more critical for Nvidia's bottom line? The result is that over the years, DP speed has been sacrificed in later Nvidia architectures.
When DYFL was started, and the bonus was established, the benchmarking was done on an Nivida GTX 460, which had blazingly fast DP. The fastest transform made use of that. So the benchmark transform for GFN-22 is OCL, which is (or at least used to be) much, much faster than OCL4.
On a GTX 460, DYFL takes about 50% more time to run than GFN-22. 25% is due to the size of the numbers, and the other 25% is due to the speed difference between OCL and OCL5. To compensate, we gave DYFL 25% extra bonus credit.
While modern Nvidia GPUs are much faster than legacy GPUs, their DP speed isn't proportionally as fast as it used to be. OCL4 is actually faster today than OCL, because DP, and thus OCL, sucks on today's Nvidia GPUs. So instead of comparing a blazingly fast OCL vs OCL5, today, it's OCL4 vs OCL5, and the difference is only 6%.
The bottom line is that DYFL is larger and uses a slower transform, and both make it take longer. Credit is proportionally higher for the size of the number, but currently the difference in transform speed seems to be a lot less than the extra credit bonus. DYFL should therefore do somewhat better than GFN-22 when you look at credit per hour.

So Michael, if it's all about DP, why doesn't the Radeon VII perform better than NVIDIA cards?
Radeon VII - FP64 (double) performance
3.360 TFLOPS (1:4)
GTX 3090 - FP64 (double) performance
556.0 GFLOPS (1:64)
Hopfully that question isn't too broad. Because I know my Radeon VII gets whooped by NVIDIA cards.
I plan on running DYFL but have no idea if GFN-21, 22 or DYFL is best for a Radeon VII. There won't be many 1st's though, that's for sure lol.
Edit - I found this comment by you.... so perhaps I shouldn't bother with DYFL?
"Remember, FP64 is ONLY used on GFN 21 and GFN 22, and then only if it's faster than OCL4.
FP64 performance is useless for Lucky."

So Michael, if it's all about DP, why doesn't the Radeon VII perform better than NVIDIA cards?
I don’t know enough about AMD GPUs to answer that question, but my guess is that Nvidia’s other performance is much better than AMD’s. Remember, because its DP performance is so weak, it’s using non-DP math.

I think that percentage is inaccurate, since DYFL didn't start at b=0.

Based on tasks completed.
I believe that if a completed task turns out to be invalid, then it will have its credit points removed from you.

Ref:
Use GFN's multithreaded mode. It requires a little bit of setup, but it's worth the effort. Follow these steps:
Create a app_config.xml file in the directory C:\ProgramData\BOINC\projects\www.primegrid.com\ (or wherever your BOINC data directory is located). For a quad core CPU, the file should contain the following contents. Change the two occurrences of "4" to the number of actual cores your computer has.
<app_config>
<app_version>
<app_name>genefer</app_name>
<cmdline>-nt 4</cmdline>
<plan_class>cpuGFN21</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>4</avg_ncpus>
</app_version>
</app_config>
After creating the file, click on "Options/Read config files". You should then restart BOINC or reboot.
The first time BOINC downloads a GFN task, it may act a little strange and download 4 tasks instead of 1. The run times on this first set of tasks may look a bit strange too. This is normal. This will also occur anytime BOINC downloads more than one task at a time. This can be avoided by setting "Use at most [ 1 ] % of the CPUs" before you download GFN tasks. After one task was downloaded, increase the percentage.
Some people have observed that when using multithreaded GFN, hyperthreading is actually beneficial. We encourage you to experiment and see what works best for you.
Is this running MT?
Showing 3 to 5 days to complete tasks.
CPU Usage is less than 10%
I am not seeing MT as like with LLR CPU Tasks

@bcavnaugh,
the syntax for an app_config which configures both the CPU version and the GPU version should look like this:
<app_config>
<app_version>
<app_name>genefer</app_name>
<plan_class>cpuGFN21</plan_class>
<cmdline>-nt 8</cmdline>
<avg_ncpus>8</avg_ncpus>
</app_version>
<app_version>
<app_name>genefer</app_name>
<plan_class>OCLcudaGFN</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>0.658690</avg_ncpus>
<ngpus>1</ngpus>
</app_version>
</app_config>
However, most people don't need an app_version block for the GPU version.
Additional app names and plan_class identifiers can be looked up at apps.php. E.g., Genefer 22 on an AMD card would have genefer_wr as app_name and openclatiGFN22 as plan_class.

No <app> </app>
Thanks, I was going by the first post.
<app_config>
<app_version>
<app_name>genefer</app_name>
<cmdline>-nt 4</cmdline>
<plan_class>cpuGFN21</plan_class>
<avg_ncpus>4</avg_ncpus>
</app_version>
</app_config>
This is now working for me.
<app_config>
<app>
<name>genefer</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>1.0</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.1</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>
<app_version>

<plan_class>cpuGFN21</plan_class>

<avg_ncpus>8</avg_ncpus>
</app_version>
</app_config> | |
|
|
Well, both the <app> and the <app_version> variants work for the basic purpose of specifying just the CPU count and GPU count per task. One or the other (or both) need to be used if more than that is desired. E.g. <app> for concurrency, <app_version> for command line arguments.
|
|
One of my i7-2600k running GFN-21 under Win7 is actually crunching on two full and two half threads while the app_config.xml is telling the machine to run on four threads.
The file itself is ok, it's just that the machine is using its resources that way.
When doing multi-threaded PrimeGrid stuff on my Linux machines using the same file, everything is fine.
But when doing multi-threaded PrimeGrid stuff on my Intel Mac Minis set to leave threads free, I get to see interesting kinds of use as well. ;-)
I'm not complaining or searching for clues, I'm just reporting strange behaviour.

Wow... this card is insane! NVIDIA A100-SXM4-40GB (an insane price tag to match now doubt.)
It smashes out GFN21 at 6K-7K run time vs my Radeon VII @ 26K-30K.
Best of the best I guess.

Just over an hour left in the challenge! Some friendly reminders... :)
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
When the challenge completes, we would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's (and then UPDATE the PrimeGrid project) instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.
Likewise, if you're shutting down the computer for an extended period of time, or deleting the VM (Virtual Machine), please ABORT all remaining tasks first. Also, be aware that merely shutting off a cloud server doesn't stop the billing. You have to destroy/delete the server if you don't want to continue to be charged for it.
Thank you!

Also, thank you for organizing the challenges in 2021.
I have a question: Where can I find the challenge calendar for 2022?
Because I can see that the clock is counting down to the Heptadecagenarian challenge, and I don't know the details.

I do not think it is quite public yet. At one point, the following was posted on Discord:
Tentative plan for the January challenge, then TdP in February:
Heptadecagenarian Challenge:
-17 Low/Mega
-3 days
-17 January 17:17 UTC thru 20 January 17:17 UTC
Whether 17-low is still around at the end, or even the start, of that challenge is up to you guys and gals.
We'll probably be releasing the whole schedule soon.

There is a page not linked from anywhere.
Hence, I suppose it's not official yet:

I may be interested in helping with cleanup of DYFL tasks however I am not able to find this name listed in any of the subprojects. Can I please ask what subproject "DYFL" so I can select it in my properties. TIA

Thank you both for your assistance. Would a RTX 2070 no over clock be after the task running around 12 hours a day?
|
|
It takes my RTX 2060 something between 41 and 42 hours to crunch a DYFL task.
I doubt an RTX 2070 would be more than twice as fast.
