One of my PPS-MEGA workunits https://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=736574755 apparently was not "first". Apparently this workunit was also sent to someone else around the same time it was sent to me. Why are two full tasks required for this workunit when most other tasks only require one full task and one DC task?

One reason could be a resend of an old unit

There was likely a glitch early on at your end, or on the server, or even in transit, that caused an error to be reported to the PG system (an admin could find out what it was) and a new unit sent out. But clearly you received the task, successfully completed it, and returned it, which overrides the serverside error code and grants you credit. Unfortunately, the other computer was faster, so you got 2nd place.

Please pay attention to following especially if you're using virtual machines or cloud services.

To distinguish between your hosts, Boinc uses unique host identifier (CPID). It's constructed from a path to Boinc data directory and MAC address of computer. Since Boinc data directory is same on most Linux boxes, only MAC address comes to play.

In a virtual machine or cloud service, MAC address is not an unique identifier of your computer. I can be virtualized. It can be shared between different users sharing same physical box. Everything is completely up to the owner of the service. You may get same MAC address as many month ago (but with different host name and host parameters).

To make things even more complicated, Boinc sometimes uses physical characteristics of your computer - host name, number and type of processors, amount of memory. Again, physical characteristics are same for all instances in virtualized environment, and only host name is really important.

This is will lead to a problem that Boinc can get confused about your hosts. It even may assign two different virtual machines to same database ID, leading to all sorts of chaos and aborted tasks.

Not much can be done here without major rewrite of Boinc - this code is a core of host authorization / identification. But one rule do exist:

Always use unique host names for all active hosts and virtual machines. If two hosts have same name, there is a high probability that after a lowest glitch in communications server will incorrectly merge these two hosts together into one database record. This will lead to almost complete loss of resources because server will always think that each host is out of sync, reset it's communication sequence and abort all inprogress tasks.

This is what I found in another thread and use for my Colab notebook:

Lately I have been getting quite a few tasks like this where it says "this result was abandoned and recovered". What causes it to be like this? I am already using unique host names for all my cloud service computers.

Also, for the task above, it seems like I reported earlier (5:36 UTC) than my opponent (5:49 UTC). Why was the opponent given the 1st?

The recovery of your task most likely happened after the other task was returned and marked as the canonical (aka "1st") task.

Because the other task was completed and marked as first before the server's cleanup process found and "unabandoned" your task.

I see. But why does the task get abandoned and later recovered?

They are marked as abandoned because the server thinks the host computer is no longer attached to PrimeGrid. Usually this happens because the host changed ID numbers or more than one host is using the same name or ID number. I can't tell you exactly what is happening on your computers because the problem is on your computers where we don't have visibility.

The "recovered" part is easy to understand, however. Jim wrote a program that periodically scans the server for tasks that are in an error state but actually do have valid result files. WHen it finds one, it changes the state to "pending validation" to give you an opportunity to get credit. Normally, BOINC would just discard these tasks.

What you described makes sense since the "abandoned" task is always on one of those cloud computing devices, and always nearing the end of the 12-hour computing time limit. In future I will switch to PPSE near the end so that if something gets abandoned, it will be far less valuable. It's good that I can still get a valid result though. Thank you!
