Rocket Lake launched last week, and today I got a sample and in process of testing it now. This is particularly interesting as it is the first mainstream desktop CPU to have AVX-512. The big question is, what is the performance?

Running Prime95 benchmark at 128k FFT (one per core) shows it about 50% faster per core, per clock, compared to AVX2 Intel CPUs Skylake or newer. This is an improvement, but less than the >80% that Skylake-X shows. The performance per watt was in line with previous CPUs running AVX2, so AVX-512 is no less power efficient. You use more power, you do more work, and it balances out.

On my system the 11700k runs AVX-512 at 4.6 GHz 1.35v, which is a bit high IMO. The peak observed power draw was 216W. I'm thinking a power limit to say 150W would help efficiency a lot, while not impacting performance too much. That's something I'll test shortly.

I also quickly tried some SGS units to verify this. Now, this is NOT final by any means, but I got a ball park 42% improvement per clock compared to AVX2 here. A bit lower than the 50% from the Prime95 benchmark, but the CPU did hit thermal limit during the run which may have impacted this. Note Skylake-X was only 70% better than AVX2 here (compared to >80% in P95), so maybe it is something to do with the workload too. Another area for investigation.

For indication of how impactful AVX-512 is, based on the Prime95 numbers, the 8 core 11700k is about 2x the throughput of the 6 core 10600k I had in the system before. In the current operating state then Zen 2 or Zen 3 will probably remain more efficient (per watt) but I think that gap can be closed with some tuning and still maintain a high level of performance.

Running Prime95 benchmark at 128k FFT (one per core) shows it about 50% faster per core, per clock, compared to AVX2 Intel CPUs Skylake or newer.

Prime95 running AVX-512 on the 11700K runs 50% faster than Prime95 running AVX2 on the 11700K or do you compare it to the 10x00K?

I ask this question because Rocket Lake has a larger L2 and L3 cache that this can be the reason of the improvement. I thought that Rocket Lake has three 256-bit FP units and combines two of them for AVX-512 instructions. Skylake-X has 2 AVX-512 units.

It is unclear...

I made observations on the 10600k and 8086k as AVX2 references. If I can work out how to disable AVX-512 in Prime95 benchmark I'll give that a try shortly on 11700k.

The lack of clarity on AVX-512 implementation, at least in the places I've looked, was a big question mark up to and beyond launch. Any improvement is welcome.

To disable AVX-512 in Prime95 I added the following line to local.txt
CpuSupportsAVX512F=0

The results were unexpected. Normalised performance dropped by only 13% compared to AVX-512. It was still some 25% better than Comet Lake. I'm not sure it can be attributed to the cache differences and I'm questioning if I really disabled all AVX-512 functionality by doing that.

Also I have to correct a previous statement. I had stated Rocket Lake was about 50% faster and Skylake-X >80% faster. That was based on a test using my Kaby Lake laptop as reference. Now I look at the numbers more, that laptop performed worse than expected relative to Coffee Lake/Comet Lake. If I use the Comet Lake results as reference, that becomes 43% and 75% improvement respectively, which is closer to what I saw with LLR testing separately.

I don't intend to spend time looking at it, but I'm seeing hints of small gains in performance with newer generations between Skylake and Comet Lake, even though they're supposed to be the same microarchitecture. I'd speculate that the spectre/meltdown mitigations might be a factor as the newer generations had improved implementations.

If AVX-512 instructions are split into two 256-bit operations, the benefit of AVX-512 is "only" its 32 512-bit registers (16 256-bit registers for AVX/AVX2). With AVX a radix-4 FFT must be used to fit in registers but with AVX-512 a radix-8 FFT can be used. It can explain the +13%. The number of L1 read/write operations is -50% and throughput is better because there are more independent instructions waiting for execution. But the number of FMA that can be executed per cycle is identical. (this is just a possible assumption).

I found an option in bios to disable AVX-512 so I can be sure the software is running AVX2. Results were unchanged by going this route instead of the configuration change in Prime95. This also enabled me to compare SGS work units, where I saw the same difference.

To recap, Rocket Lake running AVX2 is ~25% faster than Comet Lake (per core, per clock). AVX-512 is about 42% faster. That is a nice IPC increase here however it comes about. I'll want to test bigger units at some point, but I need to tame the thermals first.

Would you be so kind to tell me how many tasks ran in parallel, or how many threads per task, I would like to compare this with my 3700x and your time is about 310 seconds. But i dont know your llr settings.

Ok, be careful looking at my historic results as I've been tinkering with various settings.

11700k ran SGS one unit per core (apart from when I did stupid things, which are excluded).

4.6 GHz AVX-512 - 300s each, 216W peak consumption
4.6 GHz AVX2 - 339s each
165W power limit - 373s each

At default setting (4.6 GHz) the power draw is such that the CPU hits thermal throttling with sustained loads. This is with a Noctua D15 (single fan, with "quiet" resistor cable used). I did try without the resistor cable and it didn't help. It just took a little longer to thermal throttle but didn't prevent it.

The PPSE results going through now are with 142W power limit (equal to the default PPT value of AMD 105W TDP CPUs), but be aware I might also be running other things on the system at the same time so results may be slower than ideal situation.

I just had a look at your system, it looks like you're running 7 threads per task? That's unlikely to be a good setting. SGS work units are very small so can easily be run one per core without hitting limits. It also means they don't scale well with more threads. Best throughput would typically be expected with one task per core.

Yeah i changed to 1Thread per Task, 7 Tasks parallel. Let's see what this will give us.

For your Information: the 3700x is running in Eco Mode, at Maximum 65Watts.

I'm going to have to pause testing as I've come to the conclusion the system isn't stable with the CPU in it. I don't know what's going on, but I didn't have any problems running CPU intensive workloads on it. I'm getting the occasional random restart when there wasn't any great CPU load on at all, pointing towards a platform problem.

I'm speculating, but I suspect the unofficial PCIe 4.0 support on my older Z490 mobo. Unfortunately the bios setting to try forcing this down to 3.0 didn't work. I'll look to get another mobo to test. For now I will revert back to the old CPU (10600k) so I can actually use the system for other things without worrying about when it might crash next.
