There is a reported of k= 2293 prime in T5K page. Since this is a conjecture k for TRP, will we just stop working on this k?

It hasn't been discussed yet, but... possibly not. There's some value in knowing you've found the lowest prime for each K.

The irony of using PG to search for the "lowest prime" is not lost.

I support the objective of keeping that K available to search for a prime. However I am rather in favour of suspending this K to put more incremental CPU power toward the remaining Ks to prove the conjecture, since that's the primary goal of TRP.

By the time TRP is down to a few unproven K, this K will become arguably a faster way to find a higher scoring prime. But that's not the same thing as proving the conjecture. So I propose splitting off such Ks into another subproject and calling it TRPE (TRP extended).

We looked at some numbers and reached a decision.

We will continue searching that K up to the prime that was found. It's only 4175 candidates, and at the current pace that's about 2 weeks. So we're adding two weeks to a search that will take many years. It's a drop in the proverbial bucket.

We're certainly not going to reach n = 12.9M in 2 weeks though (we're currently at 11.4M), unless k = 2293 is given full priority and all other k-values are paused until we get there.

The task status page says we're doing about 339 TRP tasks each day; if these 4175 candidates were the only numbers being processed, then yes it would take about 2 weeks. However there's about 47 other k-values also being searched (46 once all the k=9221 work is completed), so those 339 tasks/day are going to be split across all those 47-48 k-values. Roughly speaking that means it could take 82-84 weeks until TRP reaches n = 12.9M, the value of the new T5K prime.

For what it's worth I agree with the decision to keep k = 2293 in the project until we reach that point. I just wanted to provide some clarity to the "2 weeks" estimation.

Together with our own k=9221 find also in this month, it means all k under 23'669 are resolved. Nice.

It seems likely that the finder of the k=2293 prime started from PrimeGrid's leading edge and searched ahead from there. So I guess we will not find anything smaller for that k.

I agree with Michael Millerick. What a waste.

If you consider this "poaching", we can cure this by letting PG members choose the K they want to work on. Then there won't be any assurance to someone who tries to run ahead of PG's leading edge for a given K that they won't be trailing behind a group of PG members who are searching the same K (and repeating their work).

That will, most likely, be very hard to implement on BOINC. Interestingly someone suggested this at a similar time: https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=8778&nowrap=true#148683
Great suggestion that I'd really love to see in real life, but maybe it's too hard to implement?

I would love this option for all projects, but implementation might be quite difficult or impossible. It would certainly improve the collaborative aspects of PrimeGrid if an individual is interested in a specific k, but not other k from a conjecture, or for PPS for people who are interested in low-weight k or low k for Fermat divisor reason. For The Riesel Problem it would be great too if someone is interested in eliminating a k with certain features.

In short; I'm fully on board for selectable k for every project, if it is possible :)

How would new users cope with this, or people that have no grasp of the number theory?

Assuming you select this at project preferences, maybe an icon you hover over & it shows a popup graph & you select the least-searched k i.e lowest bar on the graph. Or would this be unwieldy for a large number of ks...

Not necessarily! Give us a javascript prototype.
I think it would look similar to this stock chart, where the x coordinate is k instead of time.

You already discuss the user interface? I do not care; it could be like when you choose pages from a document to send to your printer: a text box where you can write e.g. "3-15; 27" to select all k for which 3≤k≤15 or k=27. /JeppeSN

Some people like to think about user interface. I've always preferred working on the back-end. The work generator is the more challenging part anyway - turning one or more k's into BOINC workunits according to preferences.

I can’t think of any practical way to make either the BOINC or PRPNet servers allow users to select a specific K. This suggestion is as close to impossible as anything that’s ever been suggested here. It’s definitely not going to happen.

I can’t think of any practical way to make either the BOINC or PRPNet servers allow users to select a specific K.

It also doesn't really address anything if even if it were feasible. It would just mean that instead of there being a single fairly uniform leading edge, there would be a different leading edge per K. Groups with enough computing power would still be able to work ahead of our leading edge in a targeted way.

I don't think we're doing the work "for science", as a matter of finding the lowest n for each k.
We're doing the work because it has already been queued for processing.
For example

Candidates Complete In progress Waiting Min in progress Max in progress Max complete Primes 9221*2^n-1 75511 9 100 11 418 738 11 438 538 11 438 898 9221*2^11392194-1

We're clearly processing work beyond the prime which has been found.

We're clearly processing work beyond the prime which has been found.

What? That should be stopped! /JeppeSN

Edit: I think the "9" is an indication in it is the process of stopping.

Ordinarily I would say keep those workunits in progress for the cobblestones and badges.
But we're in the middle of TdP and the chance of finding another prime on that k in the work already queued is slim to DYFL.

Those 100 "waiting" won't be tested. When a prime is found, the other candidates are left in the database but not touched by anything. It's just waiting for an admin to manually delete them. In the past, I've done it when the announcement is written so I can tackle everything that has to be done for that prime at once.

I do not understand. If you pick The Riesel Problem during Tour de Primes, you know what the odds are, per candidate, of finding a prime in this project. The chance is not more slim now, just because we are about to leave this k. /JeppeSN

My reasoning was wrong - I was thinking that the probability that we find two primes in a row on that k is around the same as that of a SG prime. But we already know that there's a prime, so now the next prime becomes an independent event with the usual probability.

Alas, I wish the compute resources were being put towards running the tasks the PrimeGrid.
Ryan Propper is an active PG user. I saw a computer of his doing a proof task for my main recently.

Is it ethically acceptable he searches ahead of PG? It's a tough question, I think. PG has "reserved" a lot of open prime number questions, if you prefer to be your own master it's hard to find anything worthwhile left. CRUS and Riesel primes are two that are left and I already read suggestions in this forum why not to look at Riesel as well.

TRP might be questionable, but for example take GFN - if you want to find the world's largest prime on your own you are drawn towards GFN-22. Or take Factorials - we cannot ban the whole world from hunting factorial primes.

So as long as the person isn't stealing the sieves and goes far beyond PG's current edge, as Propper usually does, I think it's annoying to us, but we have to accept it.

Btw, who is Ryan Propper? He doesn't seem to post at either PG or mersenneforum and I also couldn't find any mathematician of that name. Is he some prime-crazy millionaire?

Hmm, US privacy laws are liberal. With 5 minutes of google I found out his age, which party he is a registered voter for, the house he lives in and which sector he's probably working in and a rough estimate of the income.

I sure hope I am misinterpreting this as a "jokey" threat, because if it was intended that way it was in poor taste. At the end of the day, Ryan Propper did all his own sieving work and found the prime with no assistance from Primegrid. It may be a bit tasteless from our perspective, but considering he's helped the conjecture with just his own work, he is a valuable resource to the prime finding community and should be respected as such.

Primegrid is meant to be collaborative, not competitive, and if we fail to see that in terms of this situation, we become an enemy of prime finders everywhere for no other reason than sour grapes. Don't do this.

I agree with Gelly, that's not a very nice joke.

And I disagree with Bur about US privacy laws - the legal framework at play is contractual consent. It's peoples' cavalier attitude about privacy that gets them into trouble.

OFF TOPIC
That said, assumed privacy on the internet is the real joke.

Offline information is a powerful enabler to using public information. I particularly dislike the list of "security questions" that people need to enter for account/password recovery - the same lame questions tend to be used on unrelated sites, which exposes a variety of your accounts to data breaches even if you're careful to use 35+ unique passwords for all your accounts or a password manager.

More than 10 years ago I visited acquaintances in Europe who said they lost touch with so-and-so (whom I've never met) in the USA for 20+ years and they hadn't a clue how to find them. It took me 5 minutes online and some liberal choices on how an Asian name would be spelled in English to get their phone number. The son's name in public military records online gave me the right state which narrowed down the choices immensely, and the number I gave them was right - I even amazed myself.

Children's privacy on the internet is stricter because they don't have the legal capacity to stupidly give it away. But once you're an adult, click here - (you've just agreed to 40 pages of dense legal prose that you didn't read, let alone understand) and you've given it up. I was going to develop Facebook apps soon after that platform first appeared, was pretty excited when I looked over what could be done with the API, then read the terms and conditions, and I was so shocked by what I read that I gave up the whole idea and have never signed up for Facebook.

I don't even have an account on XXXXXXXX, and that gives me a smaller attack surface. It was funny (to me) when a con artist phoned me at work (after having tricked some other people into giving him my number - he had to have called multiple people to get to me) and he tried to get me to believe he was calling from a computer company I deal with (to get me to do some admin activities) and he wanted me to confirm my email address. I asked him where he got the address and he said "XXXXXXX?" Ha ha.

I use the Hollywood Principal - don't call me, I'll call you.
Given how difficult it is to be trackless without being a hermit, you have to.
