I received a task [http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=701613047] [http://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=1180389921] today. It hasn't started so far because of other tasks in the queue before it and I have suspended this task because I doubt I can finish it in time, because of the details:

Boinc client says, deadline is

Feb 11 02:10:57 and website says

12 Feb 2021 | 2:19:57 UTC

to report. My client estimates 40d 01:14:10 for computing. If that estimate is true, I'd report approx 32 d overdue. I know there's some grace period for every project I have participated so far. However I never encountered a project offering grace periods 4 times longer than original due date minus send date. And my computers take part in more than one project so I have to assume, that computing power will be shared until short before due date.

I wonder if it is wiser to abort this task as I have to assume that any CPU operation will be wasted because of not reporting within due date + grace period.

If not, what's behind issuing WUs with unrealistic due dates? Or is my client's estimate wrong?

In the meantime I started the task and it crashed instantly. However, do unrealistic due dates occur frequently?

Yes they do occur frequently when You start running tasks for first time.

Boinc has to complete enough tasks to correct estimated time remaining.

So nothing to worry about.

Primegrid has a sort of unique way of tracking each task on our computers and they know if you are working on a task and will extend and extend and extend the deadline as long as you are working on it. If you stop working on the extended task however they can pull the plug and send it to someone else. I have no idea how many times or how long they will extend the deadline for someone but they have been very generous in the past in trying to accomadate people and their resources.

Now you have! This post describes the deadline extension system at PrimeGrid: https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=6404&nowrap=true#87302

If things haven't changed since then (I don't think they have), the maximum deadline is 4x the original deadline or an additional 30 days, whichever is longer (up to a maximum of 250 days)
