No work received - ever

Could someone help me to understand why I don't receive work for the Generalized Cullen/Woodall Prime Search (LLR) project (GCW), please?
I have had this project enabled and set to 'CPU' in all of my pref groups for years. I have 3, 'default', 'work' and 'home'. I have two Windows machines crunching. One should be using 'work' and the other 'home' but either way they should get work. However not one WU have I ever received for this project and not one, single credit. Nix.
I raised this issue once before and got nowhere. Is there some requirement my machines lack? I have found no suggestion that that is the case. Is there a problem with the site? I'm happy to provide pics of the pref settings if someone can suggest how to attach images here. I'm sure I even tried turning off all other PG projects at one stage to try and force GCW to serve something up but I just received no work at all, then. This mystery has had me stumped for years. According to the home page there are some 1750 WUs available now. I'd love to solve this conundrum once and for all.
Many thanks.

As well as selecting the app you want, do you have CPU enabled?
i.e. the tickbox towards the top, labelled as:
Use CPU
You must also select CPU apps below.
If you do not, PPS-Sieve will be automatically selected for you.
Enforced by version 6.10+

Check to be sure you don't have an app_config file that is written in such away to prevent GCW files. And then try removing and re-adding the project.

I just looked at your preferences, and you seem to have everything selected *except* GCW.
Turn off everything else -- if you give the server a choice, it's Murphy's law that it's always going to choose what you don't want. Then select GCW, and only GCW. Make sure there's no PrimeGrid tasks suspended -- that will prevent more tasks from downloading. Then see what happens.
Many thanks.

Fair question. Yes, I do. I have CPU and nVidia GPU selected in every profile.
Cheers.

Hi Mike,
I believe you said the very same last time. It's just not true. How do I post an image here to prove that they're set? If that's IS what you're seeing then I believe there is something wrong with the site because every instance is set to CPU in my UI and always has been.
Cheers.

I do have one. It's got this in it:
<app_config>
<app_version>
<app_name>genefer</app_name>
<cmdline>-nt 2</cmdline>
<avg_ncpus>2</avg_ncpus>
<plan_class>cpuGFN21</plan_class>
</app_version>
</app_config>
PrimeGrid says "PrimeGrid: Notice from BOINC
Entry in app_config.xml for app 'genefer', plan class 'cpuGFN21' doesn't match any app versions
"
so I think it's out of date. :-)
Thanks.

The forums don't host images, so you have to put the image on the web *somewhere else* and then link to it from here using the "img" tag in square brackets. Click on the 'use BBCodetags..." link for the exact syntax. I can't help you with hosting the image on the web, however.
That being said, I suggest you instead go over to our DISCORD server where you can chat interactively with everyone, and where showing pictures is as simple as cut and paste.

I use PostImage.
It's free and has been working good for me.
For example:
____________
"Accidit in puncto, quod non contingit in anno."
Something that does not occur in a year may, perchance, happen in a moment.

Thanks, I didn't know that one. It's all of the signing-up-and-logging-in faff that annoys me. This might be a good alternative. :-)
Cheers.

You're welcome.
But note that I did create an account there, in order to have better control of my images.

Just following up to let Mike know that I am now receiving GCW work on at least one PC. I still believe that there is a bug in the prefs saving. I have set and unset this quite a few times over the years in attempts to get work, tried forcing it by switching off everything else, etc. It has never worked. The thing that I did differently this time was change the number of threads allowed in the general settings. My working theory is that GCW settings finally took when that was changed after setting GCW to on.
Cheers.
P.S. Apologies for having put this in the wrong CW thread, as well (sigh) :-).

One further point to add. There is definitely a problem with setting preferences, here. I now have PPS-Sieve set in my Home group and can't unset it. I use Waterfox, a FF derivative, and it fails there. I also tried a clean Chrome installation and that fails, too. This is indicative of the problem I've been having for years.
Mike, please turn that off, if you would.
Thanks.

That is intentional. Turn OFF the USE CPU box all the way at the top of the page.

Wow, that is really bad, especially since there's no indication that that's the expectation and no report of what's happening when it behaves that way. That's a completely awful user experience. I exhort you to change it.
Cheers.

On the preferences page beside the "Use CPU" checkbox it says:
Use CPU
You must also select CPU apps below.

That seems pretty clear to me. I don't see any reason to change things.

Don't beat yourself up over little oversights like this. We all do it from time to time, you know - fine print, human condition, and all.
And for the rest of you experienced members, there's no use in piling on someone for the kind of mistake we all make. Just recognize it for what it is, help, and move on. We want people to feel more inclined to gratitude than resentment.
