Good luck everyone in the upcoming TRP challenge!

I know it's hot, crunching is tough trying to keep things cool. Not sure how much local hardware I will be able to contribute this time around.

TSC instances however... Will be running a few of those to help out.

I set my machine to run 8 threads per job and switched to 4 threads per job. In both instances the wingman's job is much much faster. Any suggestions on what is going on? I could throw all threads at a job and do one at a time but I like to avoid that if possible.

REMINDER: If you have any Windows 10 computers that are going to participate in this challenge, now would be a good time to set those computers to pause Windows Updates until after the challenge ends.

ON a Ryzen you are going to want a utility to keep the tasks withing each CCD or CCX..

Running a 3950x I run 1 task per CCX, or 4 x 4t.

The utility I use to set the affinity for llr tasks is called AffinityWatcher. Warning, windows will detect is as a virus as it reads all the running processes to look for the llr app. You need to disable the antivirus and make an exception for the app. You can grab the latest version from my google drive. A good fellow cruncher ATN, wrote this app. Magical it is.

This setting of the affinity to certain CPU cores and CCXs or CCDs speeds up task times cutting them in half even on some sub projects. I believe TRP was one of them.

A few of us here on the team with Ryzen's use this utility and it's a must to get the most from a Ryzen and LLR.

Buckeye4lf: What combination of tasks and threads per task to run would depend on what the CCX/CCD layout of your threadripper is. Which TR CPU is it again?

In the mean time I'll be doing updates on my i5 and i7 systems tonight. The Ryzen is already paused until some time in August.

I have the 3970, which is the one with 32cores/64threads.

Is this my problem? I have both -t4 and ncpus set to the same value. It is my understanding that each cpu core has two threads so should by ncpu be half the value of -t value??

There is little need for an app config. Set CPU usage in BOINC to 50%. Use 32 cores, 32 threads, don't use the other 32 hyperthreads. I have to assume the tasks are best run at -t4 for you also, just you would use 8 tasks at 4 threads each, or 4 cores each. Set in the preferences online to use 4 threads per task and set it to unlimited # of tasks. Boinc will run -t4 tasks up to the number of available CPU cores. In your case, 8 tasks,. 4 threads each.

AffinityWatcher does not work in Linux. That's not the best for LLR on a Ryzen like it is for GFN. It is a little better with allocation CPU resources, but it's not the same as Windows with AW running. You TR with 32 cores should be doing 55-60 TRP tasks per day. The 3950X I'm running is doing 30.

Thanks, I will have to incorporate for next challenge. I am closer to 30 TRP tasks a day which is rubbish. I like the app_config because it allows me to spread tasks better and also run non threaded tasks intermingled with threaded tasks (ie Sophie Germain and other LLR simultaneously) But it seems it is causing other issues, maybe I should ditch it as you are not the first to tell me to.

I removed the app_config and set to 50% of cpus. Overnight I did 40 tasks on that machine with an average time of 4-5 hours per task. This definitely sped things up but now my machine is bogged down running three "Do you feel Lucky" tasks on my GPUS. I will most likely will add the app_config back for GPU tasks only once the challenge is over. The room with the computer is pushing 90 degrees, nothing like a space heater in July.

High GFN shouldn't use much if any CPU. You can always suspend GPU processing manually in thr BOINC menu & resume when the challenge finishes.

That's great with the performance improvement!

For the GPU tasks you can use the PrimeGrid Preferences page and unselect the GPU projects and the use GPU option so that your GPUs sit idle in times like the challenge.

Just cherry-picked a 768K FFT out of the Celeron. So we will have 1 extra unit to our name. Based on 2d3h+ for a 800 FFT with 2d2.5h to go.

Just use app_config for the GPU tasks. Don't include any information for CPU tasks. It is not like app_info, where it's all or nothing. You can use app_config for the just the tasks you want.

Just use app_config for the GPU tasks. Don't include any information for CPU tasks. It is not like app_info, where it's all or nothing. You can use app_config for the just the tasks you want.

Well said. I only have entries for the CPU apps to report_results_immediately and fraction_done_exact.

<app>
<name>llrPPS</name>
<report_results_immediately/>
<fraction_done_exact/>
</app>

To mix and match GPU stuff can be tricky because the server doesn't always send you what you want.

I do have app_config entries for all GPU apps like these:

<app> <name>pps_sr2sieve</name> <report_results_immediately/> <fraction_done_exact/> </app> <app_version> <app_name>pps_sr2sieve</app_name> <plan_class>cudaPPSsieve</plan_class> <avg_ncpus>0.0001</avg_ncpus> <ngpus>0.5</ngpus> </app_version> <app> <name>ap26</name> <report_results_immediately/> <fraction_done_exact/> </app> <app_version> <app_name>ap26</app_name> <plan_class>OCL_cuda_AP27</plan_class> <avg_ncpus>0.0001</avg_ncpus> <cmdline>-compute</cmdline> </app_version> <app> <name>genefer_extreme</name> <report_results_immediately/> <fraction_done_exact/> </app> <app_version> <app_name>genefer_extreme</app_name> <plan_class>OCLcudaGFNEXTREME</plan_class> <avg_ncpus>0.0001</avg_ncpus> <ngpus>1</ngpus> </app_version>

I think buckeye had it working b4, so should be easy to get it going as he had it b4.

Yeah, I had it working and once my cache gets lower I will add app_config back in for GPUs. Does the <avg_ncpus>0.0001</avg_ncpus> flag actually do anything? I have set this to 0.1 in the past.

That 0.0001 is the minimum you can tell BOINC it's using. It may not use that amount, but it's the minimum you can tell it is using. Sometimes you may run 10 instances at 0.1 and then it will leave a core free. More of a problem on multi-GPU systems and shorter tasks. You can tell BOINC whatever, it's only to let it know how to lay out it's CPU resources. You can even see how much CPU under Details Tab in Task Manager on Windows or I think htop in Linux shows CPU use, then you can configure it for a value for the right amount of CPU a task utilizes. Many options. I go back and forth setting it to 0.0001 and freeing cores manually or use 1.0 and letting it auto leave a core free if need be.
