Welcome to the World Maths Day Challenge
The seventh Challenge of the 2019 Challenge series is a 5 day challenge to celebrate World Maths Day. The challenge is being offered on the new Fermat Divisor Search (PPS-DIV) (LLR) application.
Celebrated on October 15th each year, World Maths Day encourages students globally to take a break from standard math lessons giving them the opportunity to enjoy the beauty of mathematics by participating in maths-themed competitions, quizzes and games. It focuses on making mathematics interesting while also giving them an opportunity to win prizes and scholarships.
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Fermat Divisor Search LLR (PPS-DIV) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 10th October 2019 18:00 UTC and end at 15th October 2019 18:00 UTC.
Application builds are available for Linux 32 and 64 bit, Windows 32 and 64 bit and MacIntel. Intel CPUs with FMA3 capabilities (Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake, Coffee Lake) will have a very large advantage, and Intel CPUs with dual AVX-512 (certain recent Intel Skylake-X and Xeon CPUs) will be the fastest.
ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. Tasks on one CPU core will take 2 hours on fast/newer computers and 5 hours+ on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)
Highly overclocked Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake, Kaby Lake or Coffee Lake (i.e., Intel Core i7, i5, and i3 -4xxx or better) computers running the application will see fastest times. Note that PPS-DIV is running the latest AVX-512 version of LLR which takes full advantage of the features of these newer CPUs. It's faster than the previous LLR app and draws more power and produces more heat. If you have certain recent Intel Skylake-X and Xeon CPUs, especially if it's overclocked or has overclocked memory, and haven't run the new AVX-512 LLR before, we strongly suggest running it before the challenge while you are monitoring the temperatures.
Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.
Multi-threading optimisation instructions
Those looking to maximise their computer's performance during this challenge, or when running LLR in general, may find this information useful.
- Your mileage may vary. Before the challenge starts, take some time and experiment and see what works best on your computer.
- If you have an Intel CPU with hyperthreading, either turn off the hyperthreading in the BIOS, or set BOINC to use 50% of the processors.
- If you're using a GPU for other tasks, it may be beneficial to leave hyperthreading on in the BIOS and instead tell BOINC to use 50% of the CPU's. This will allow one of the hyperthreads to service the GPU.
- The new multi-threading system is now live. This will allow you to select multi-threading from the project preferences web page. No more app_config.xml. It works like this:
- In the preferences selection, there are selections for "max jobs" and "max cpus", similar to the settings in app_config.
- Unlike app_config, these two settings apply to ALL apps. You can't chose 1 thread for SGS and 4 for SoB. When you change apps, you need to change your multithreading settings if you want to run a different number of threads.
- There will be individual settings for each venue (location).
- This will eliminate the problem of BOINC downloading 1 task for every core.
- The hyperthreading control isn't possible at this time.
- The "max cpus" control will only apply to LLR apps. The "max jobs" control applies to all apps.
- If you want to continue to use app_config.xml for LLR tasks, you need to change it if you want it to work. Please see this message for more information.
- -t1 or -t2 is best on most computers. On older hardware (i7-950 for example), it is now best to run -t4.
- Some people have observed that when using multithreaded LLR, hyperthreading is actually beneficial. We encourage you to experiment and see what works best for you.

Scoring Information
Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only tasks issued AFTER 10th October 2019 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 15th October 2019 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will be using the same scoring method as we currently use for BOINC credits. A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their tasks instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING tasks allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING tasks causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until tasks expire to send them out to be completed.
Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)
About the Fermat Divisor Search
In mathematics a Fermat number, named after Pierre de Fermat who first studied them, is a positive integer of the form Fn = 22n+1, where n is a nonnegative integer.
The first few Fermat numbers are 3, 5, 17, 257, 65537, 4294967297, 18446744073709551617, … (sequence A000215 in the OEIS).
Only five Fermat primes are known, and the Fermat numbers grow so quickly that it may be years before the first undecided case: F33 = 2233+1 is shown prime or composite - unless we luck onto a divisor. Ever since Euler found the first Fermat divisor (divisor of a Fermat composite), factorers have been collecting these rare numbers.
The largest known prime Fermat divisor is the megaprime 193 * 23329782+1, discovered by PrimeGrid in 2014, which divides F3329780 = 223329780+1. Will we break this record during the challenge?
Euler showed that every divisor of Fn (n greater than 2) must have the form k*2n+2+1 for some integer k. For this reason, when we find a large prime of the form k*2n+1 (with k small), we usually check to see if it divides a Fermat number. The probability of the number k*2n+1 dividing any Fermat number appears to be 1/k.
Any prime Generalised Fermat Number Fb,n = b2n+1 (with b an integer greater than one) is called a generalised Fermat prime (because they are Fermat primes in the special case b=2), Ribenboim (1996).
Riesel (1994) further generalised by defining Extended Generalised Fermat Numbers xGFn,a,b = a2n+b2n.
In the Fermat Divisor Search we focus on special k's that are either small (generally gives high chance of dividing a Fermat number) or have special properties that makes them attractive.
First we'll first search k=19683 up to n=4M, (now complete).
Then five additional k's, 1323 (even n only), 2187 (even n only), 3125, 3267 (even n only) and 3375, up to n=3.322M, (now complete).
Finally 5<=k<=49 up to n=9M.

The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2n − 1, with 2n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. PPS-DIV tasks currently use a 256K FFT size. Within the first day or two of the challenge I expect will start seeing 288K FFTs, And we'll probably see 320K by the end of the challenge. Possibly even 384K.
The tasks will definitely get longer during the challenge.

Last time PrimeGrid found a Fermat divisor, was in February 2015 where it was established that 267*2^2662090+1 is a factor of F2662088.
On fermatsearch.org - News you can see Fermat divisors found by anyone. The last time one was found was back in March where they showed 332436749*2^9865+1 is a factor of F9863. Last year (2018), seven Fermat divisors were found; in 2019 up to now, two have been found.
If PrimeGrid finds a divisor from the DIV subproject, it will be the largest Fermat divisor known, and the Fermat number it proves composite will be the largest Fermat number for which the character (prime or composite) is known.
When it is found that "k*2^n+1 is a factor of F(m)", the difference n-m will always be at least 2. In the examples I mentioned here, it was 2 exactly, which I guess will happen 50% of the times. n-m can be 3, 4, 5, etc., but I think the frequency will be halved every time the difference n-m goes up by 1.
The DIV candidates currently have n close to 4'200'000.

I have an Intel I7 that did CulllenLLR MT tasks, using 6 cpu cores, HT was turned off, in about 12 hours. I also have an AMD Ryzien 1920X with quad channel ram in it and it did the same units using 11 cpu cores in 12 hours. The 1920X has 12/24 cpu cores and I left one free for gpu units, I did not do that on the I7 machine. So it is possible to do LLR workunits on AMD computers it will just take alot more resources to do it. My I7 is an older one so it does NOT have the AVX-512 on it so mine ran units slower than cpu's that do have that.
The point is you will not win any races with the AMD here at PG but it will contribute and do it just fine. | |

Ok but not going to run an expensive cpu which uses a lot of power if it is not compatitive (efficient). There are projects where AMDs processors are working fine (most projects), so not wasting money here than.
Rather be on a project where the AMD is running efficiently and leave PG up to Intel cpus.
Although your comparison is not really fair since SMT on the AMD causes a major performance hit which is about 40% compared to SMT off (tested on a ryzen 7 pro 1700X by one of the cows on our own forum).
But I dont know what a 3900X does compared to a 9900K.
The 3900X is in most cases the faster CPU but if it is not efficient in PG it seems a waist of the powerconsumption.

Ryzen 3 is now competitive as its AVX implementation is now comparable to Intel's. Any generation before that only has half the potential as it shares 1 AVX unit between 2 cores. Sounds like a 3900X will be a monster. | |

Well, this is (literally) the question you asked:

That's the question I answered.
If you're asking if the server downloads the correct program automatically, the answer is yes, with a small exception relating to a problem on a small number of Intel CPUs, but that doesn't affect you. (Speaking of which, if you ever decide to buy an Intel AVX512 CPU, definitely ask first. Some of them are a waste of money and are slower than AVX2. The others are very fast. You want to know which is which before purchasing.)
If you want to know whether your AMD CPU is "competitive", the answer is "no, except maybe".
AMD CPUs, until *very* recently, had abysmal performance on LLR because of the way AMD implemented AVX. This is a hardware deficiency that can not be corrected by software. That's the bad news.
(I'll let someone else tell you exactly which AMD CPUs are the good "fixed" CPUs. I'm not up on AMD's product line nomenclature and don't want to give you incorrect information.)
The good news comes in two flavors:
First, some of the latest generation AMD CPUs *finally* have AVX done correctly. These CPUs are core-for-core competitive with Intel, and cost less. There's no reason I know of not to buy these CPUs.
Secondly, LLR now supports multi-threading, which you can control from the PrimeGrid website. Even with an AMD core running calculations slower than an Intel core, you can make up for it with more cores.
And, of course, we do things that are not LLR, such as sieving or anything that runs on a GPU. AVX performance doesn't affect that.
Also, any CPU version of Genefer (except GFN21) can't use AVX, so AMD runs those as fast as Intel. Of course, the GPU versions of the tasks are much faster than the CPU versions.
Finally, for relatively short tasks, being "1st" is more about having a 0/0 cache than how fast your computer is. The slower computer will still win when the other guy gives it a 24 hour head start.
(The above is talking about AVX/AVX2//FMA3 performance, not AVX512. AVX512 is only supported by a few very expensive high end Intel CPUs. If that's your idea of "competitive", be prepared to lose some weight by emptying out your wallet.)

Ofcourse I know sieving on CPU and GPU is possible, i have been doing that a lot on the GPU because on the CPU is just not effective.
I will do some test runs to see if it competative. I will let you know the results.

Ps with compatative I mean effective. The 3900X is the top of the line for AMD and if the LLR tasks are calculated way faster on a 9900K for example it means for me that it is not worth the power consumption to put my 3900X to work on LLR. I want to donate my cpu power but I do want it to be effective. By thr way Emptying my wallet is already what I have done when building this system. But not with PG primarely in my mind, that is just an extra.

I run 12 units, with smt switched off, 1 core per task with an average time of 3283 seconds per task. That seems a big improvement over a Ryzen 7 Pro 1700X which does 8 tasks in 6.593. No clue what a recent Intel does.
I have to find out what kind of effect has when doing more cores per task.

You have a good memory!
It wasn't LLR, but the CPU versions of Genefer that used to be separate. You had to chose the appropriate app on the website. This was very soon after we moved GFN to BOINC, so probably in 2012. Making that automatic was a priority of mine, and the Genefer apps were combined not long after.

AMD are not that bad. I have a AMD Ryzen 5 1600X Six-Core Processor [Family 23 Model 1 Stepping 1] (6 processors), which is not high end. Running DIV on 3 cores, I have more than 50% of 1st, which is not bad at all. See https://www.primegrid.com/results.php?hostid=922644&offset=20&show_names=0&state=0&appid=32
If you look at performance per price unit, including power consumption, I don't know if AMD would not be reasonably competitive. | |

The current LLR app uses the best instruction support of the CPU.
As a rough guide to relative peak throughput per core, per clock:
Up to 200% - Intel CPUs with 2 unit AVX-512 implementations
100%+ - AMD Zen 2 CPUs (Ryzen 3600 and higher)
100% - most Intel "-lake" CPUs excluding Celerons, Pentiums and other low end stuff
88% - Intel Haswell CPUs
50%+ - AMD Ryzen CPUs before 3600 (including Threadripper)
I say peak performance, as it can vary with multi-threading, work unit size, and architecture considerations. Specifically for Zen 2 CPUs, best throughput seems to be achieved if you do not make units cross CCX. e.g. for a 6 core CPU, running two 3-thread tasks would tend to be higher throughput than one 6-thread task. For this particular challenge lower thread counts per task are probably better than running high thread counts. | |

Not really... sure, it's not as fast pere core as some other CPUs, but it does have a lot of them, and the cost per core is really affordable. Power consumption ain't too bad either. It is perfectly fine to run with it, and if aiming for as high of a leaderboard position as possible, every little bit of computing power helps. | |

It's so easy to measure. Almost as easy as posting idle speculation. ;-)
During the ESP-LLR challenge in August, a team mate of mine measured 1.32 MJ/task (energy consumption "at the wall") with a Ryzen 3700X based desktop PC, gold-rated PSU at 110 V power grid. I on the other hand measured 1.38 MJ/task at the wall with a Xeon E5-2696 v4 based server, platinum-rated PSU at 230 V grid.
And of course that Xeon E5 v4 runs circles around an i9-9900K with respect to power efficiency.
So, those who are concerned about power efficiency here at PrimeGrid, LLR in particular, please take those wasteful, outdated Intel CPUs offline now.

I attempted some performance-per-watt comparisons between my 8086k and 3600 at link above. This is CPU only power, on the assumption that AMD PPT values are comparable to Intel where PL1=PL2. You have to pick your operating point on the performance curve, and both sides lean towards higher clock, lower efficiency for consumer CPUs. Perf-per-watt with both CPUs at 88W limit was pretty close with only a small advantage to the 3600. I was unable to test it at higher power at that time as I ran out of thermal headroom at that point. Zen 2 runs HOT. Stock cooler is garbage. Intel CPUs on enthusiast mobos typically allow unlimited power, so efficiency is a bit worse still in that scenario. Both sides enjoy power efficiency improvement if you apply power limiting below stock values, with Zen 2 gaining more. Note: 65W TDP Zen 2 CPUs have 88W limit at stock.
Above only looks at the CPU socket power and doesn't take into consideration other system power usage.
If you are buying a CPU just to run LLR-like tasks, Zen 2 is the obvious choice today, but the Intel -lakes are not that far behind. I've not been able to do similar testing with AVX-512 as my system doesn't report socket power correctly, although having said that I could use indirect methods... | |

I have to find out what kind of effect has when doing more cores per task.
This is just a guess but I'm pretty sure that the herd was always breathing the dust from the horde regardless of the cpu :)

Working on it! The real herd is only reachable by a front post on our website but that is impossible to arrange for just a challenge.
That is only done for our annual stampede, that would really rally all the cows.
But posting it on our community forum will at least attract the regular cows I hope.

Yes the problem is their hardware is getting further and further behind the crunching curve so they don't do 'challenges' as they don't get anything out of them. Most are still crunching but just on their favorite projects at this point. | |

The border between FermatSearch and (today) PrimeGrid was never defined but I think that the main difference is that FermatSearch is searching for Fermat factors and PrimeGrid is searching for primes. Then k < kmax for PrimeGrid is certainly a better choice than n > nmin. We search for fixed k and varying n and FermatSearch is searching for fixed n and varying k.
A database for primes of the form k.2n+1 such that k < kmax doesn't exist. http://www.prothsearch.com/ contains useful information but there is no true database (at least a huge tabulated ASCII file). Because FermatSearch is searching for Fermat divisors and not primes, only PrimeGrid can create it today. The properties of the primes k.2n+1 are important and a database is useful for finding them." | |

I don't see the problem with this. Everyone has equal opportunity to end up in either situation. The days of being able to intentionally abort tasks because you know you were not the first recipient are over.

This is (may be) an error of the BOINC software. Even if you have a cache of zero, BOINC loads up to 1000 tasks if you switch fom AP27 to llrDIV (multi threaded). If the core count is higher than the count of WU that are processed in parallel this happens.

Just to note when a user set the "Resource share" to 0 you do not get any more tasks then the number of your CPU Cores/Threads.
I set mine to 0 and the Cache in the BOINC Client and only get 3 or 4 running Tasks with none in the Queue. At most I only have to abort 1 Tasks if I do not set the Number of Cores correctly in the BOINC Client. Change this year made it very easy to run MT Tasks so I thank PG for this.
This applies only to members looking for Primes and the Big F so Coin Teams to not really care and normally do not abort tasks being that one Team Member could have 1000s of Real Members. Or at least this is my thinking about them.

90629 (61%) have returned a successful result. [90197 (61%) / 0 (0%) / 434 (0%)]
50774 (34%) are still in progress. [50761 (34%) / 0 (0%) / 12 (0%)]
Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:
29048 (32%) are pending validation. [28907 (32%) / 0 (0%) / 143 (0%)]

The current leading edge (i.e., latest work unit for which work has actually been sent out to a host) is n=4434888. The leading edge was at n=4300358 at the beginning of the challenge. Since the challenge started, the leading edge has advanced 3.13% as much as it had prior to the challenge!
Normally we've been doing about 27K of these tasks per day, so we're running a bit above 3x our normal rate. I've been accustomed to seeing 10x in recent challenges, but considering how high the "normal" rate for PPS-DIV is, it was probably unrealistic to expect 10 times that traffic during this challenge. PPS-DIV was already doing nearly 10 times the number of tasks as PPS-MEGA -- and PPS-MEGA has shorter tasks.
Of course, the fantastic news is that Miklos M. found his first mega prime in the opening hours of the challenge. Congratulations!
Let's see how many more primes we can find during the challenge. Can we find the largest known Fermat divisor?
There's still four days to go. Plenty of time to throw some more cloud servers into the challenge if you want to do so!

As of late December 2019, it appears that that Digital Ocean no longer wants customers who use 100% CPU utilization, such as we do. I no longer recommend using Digital Ocean.
Plenty of time to throw some more cloud servers into the challenge if you want to do so!
How exactly does one do this?
I'll repost here a copy of the instructions for setting up a Digital Ocean "droplet". I originally posted the instructions on the Aggie the Pew team forum.
It's my opinion that D.O.s 3-core / 1 GB droplet is the best deal for cloud servers available right now. You can rent a 3 core AVX-512 server for $0.50 per day. Performance isn't as good as a dedicated server, of course, but it's still pretty good: about 60 to 80 minutes per task, single threaded. Performance varies somewhat based on what else is running on the physical server.
There's other places you can rent servers, of course. The big three (AWS, Google GCP, and Microsoft Azure) all offer free trials. After that, they're significantly more expensive. They're also far more versatile -- which means they're also more complicated to set up.
There's also many other smaller providers such as vultr. Beyond the free trials, I think D.O. is the best value right now, so I'll give you instructions for that service.
This is the executive summary:
* Create an account at Digital Ocean using a referral code for a free $50 credit. $50 goes a long way there. (You can also use referral codes from anyone else who has an account there, such as ILW8, Penguin, darkclown, and a few others that I'm aware of.)
* Create a 3-core 1-GB droplet.
* If the droplet isn't an AVX512 CPU, delete it and create another one.
* Create a firewall to let you, and only you, access the droplet on the SSH and BOINC (31416) ports, and attach the droplet to that firewall. (Only 1 firewall is needed regardless of how many droplets you have.)
* Log into the droplet, install the boinc-client package, and configure BOINC so you can connect to it remotely
* Attach PrimeGrid
* Crunch!
For some, the executive summary above is all you'll need. I'll post the detailed instructions momentarily.

Detailed instructions for setting up a droplet (server) at Digital Ocean:
Prerequisites: (not 100% necessary, but make life simpler)
1) Have Putty installed, and know how to use it. Putty is an SSH/terminal client.
2) Generate a personal access key with Putty. You'll enter your public key *once* when creating the first droplet. After that it will be automatically added to all of your droplets. This key will be used instead of passwords.
First time steps:
1) Create a "PrimeGrid" project. You'll add all the droplets into this project.
2) Create a Firewall that allows only your home computer to access the SSH and BOINC ports on the server.
..A) Click on the green "Create" button, and choose "cloud firewall". Enter BOINC for the name. It should already have one inbound rule (SSH) and 3 outbound rules.
..B) Change the inbound SSH rule to only allow access from your home:
....i) Under sources, delete "all IPv4" and "all IPv6".
....ii) Under sources, add your home's external IP address. Only traffic coming from your location will be allowed to connect to the new droplet. If your home has both IPv4 and IPv6, enter both addresses.
..C) Add a new inbound rule. In the "new rule" drop down box, select "custom".
....i) Change the port from 8000 to 31416.
....ii) Under sources, delete "all IPv4" and "all IPv6".
....iii) Under sources, add your home's external IP address. Only traffic coming from your location will be allowed to connect to the new droplet. If your home has both IPv4 and IPv6, enter both addresses.
....iv) Scroll to the bottom and click on "Create Firewall"
Now create a droplet:
1) Click on the green "Create" button, and select "droplets".
2) Under Distributions, choose Debian, and then select "10 x64" (you can choose either version 9 or 10).
3) Pick a droplet: Under "Choose a plan", select the Standard, 3 core, 1 GB droplet.
4) Do not add any additional block storage. You don't need it.
5) Pick a region near you.
6) If you have IPv6 at home, check the IPv6 box under "Select Additional Options".
7) Under Authentication, you can enter your public key. When you create future droplets, any public keys you've entered will be available here, so you won't need to enter them again.
8) Enter a hostname. It's a good idea to include a number. I use "DO-1", "DO-2", etc.
9) If you want to create more than one droplet at once, increment the "How many Droplets" counter. The number in the hostname will be incremented automatically.
10) IMPORTANT: Enter a tag name under "add tags". Give the same tag to all of your droplets. Call it BOINC if you want. Mine are called Skylake.
11) Enter the PrimeGrid project, if it hasn't already been selected for you.
12) Do NOT turn on backups. You don't need it, and it costs extra. (If anything bad happens to the droplet, you just create a new one.)
13) Click on the big "Create Droplet" button!
14) Wait while it builds the droplet(s) for you. It's pretty fast.
Congratulations! You're now the proud owner of one or more brand new Linux servers. You're almost done.
Remember that firewall you created? Let's attach the firewall to this droplet, so only you can access it:
1) Click on "networking".
2) Click on "firewalls".
3) Click on the name of the firewall ("BOINC").
4) "Rules" are displayed. Click on "droplets".
5) Click on "add droplets".
6) Enter the tag name you used when you built the first droplet ("BOINC", for example), and click on "add droplet".
7) All of the droplets you created with the "BOINC" tag will now be listed under that firewall. Better yet, all of the droplets you create in the future with the "BOINC" tag will automatically be attached to this firewall.
You're now done with the firewall, forever. It will automatically be used with any current and future droplets, provided you give the droplets the "BOINC" tag.
One final step: you have to install and configure BOINC on your new droplet:
1) Click on "Droplets" on the main menu and you'll get a list of all your droplets. Move your mouse just to the right of the IP address and click on "copy".
2) Open up a Putty SSH terminal session to that IP address. Login as root. If you have the key set up correctly in Putty, you won't be asked for a password.
3) Choose a BOINC password. We'll use it a bit later.
4) Make sure you got one of the AVX-512 servers:
..A) Enter the command "cat /proc/cpuinfo".
..B) A bunch of information about the CPUs are displayed. Look at the model number. If it's Xeon Gold 6xxx or Xeon Platinum, it's an AVX-512 CPU. You're good.
..C) If not, it's probably not AVX-512, but you can Google the CPU type if you're not sure. If it's not AVX-512, you may want to delete this droplet and build another one:
....i) Go back to the list of droplets by clicking on the main menu "droplets".
....ii) Click on the droplet name.
....iii) Click on "destroy", and click on the confirmation button.
....iv) Go back and create a new droplet.
(continue here if you have an AVX-512 CPU)
5) Enter the following commands:
apt-get -y update
apt-get -y --force-yes upgrade ### See note below
apt-get -y install boinc-client
sed -i '$ a\<your home IP address>' /etc/boinc-client/remote_hosts.cfg ### See second note below
sed -i 's/$/<the BOINC password you just picked>/' /etc/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg
systemctl stop boinc-client
systemctl start boinc-client
boinccmd --passwd <the BOINC password you just picked> --project_attach https://www.primegrid.com/ <your account authorization key>
Note: the "apt-get -y upgrade" step may ask you a question where you have to choose several options. The default is fine. Just hit 'tab' to move the cursor to the <ok> button, and hit 'enter'.
Note: If your home has both IPv4 and IPv6, run the line that edits remote_hosts.cfg twice, once with your IPv4 address and once with your IPv6 address.
Obviously, substitute your external home IP address, your new BOINC password (2 places), and your PrimeGrid account authorization key in the appropriate places. The authorization key can be found at https://www.primegrid.com/home.php.
That's it, you're up and running and your new droplet is attached to PrimeGrid. To connect the BOINC manager or BOINCTasks to the droplet, use the droplet's IP address and the new BOINC password.

I mean I figured as much but I'm using the same password on the final command:
boinccmd --passwd XYZ --project_attach https://www.primegrid.com/ <full account key>
Getting Authorization failure: -155 after that command.
I'm also running TOP on the Droplet and don't see any sign of BOINC running...?
Is incoming port 31416 a requirement? I can log on with port set to 22 but connection is always refused when I use port 31416 from putty.
EDIT: Looks like a reboot might have fixed everything

I've updated my instructions with two changes. The first one affects the firewall, and is important. You should update your firewall accordingly as a security precaution.
The second adds instructions for enabling and configuring IPv6 if you use IPv6 at home.
The firewall, by default, opens the SSH port so it can be accessed from anywhere. You should change that so that it only permits incoming SSH sessions from your home's external IP address.

I love all the howtos on setting up a droplet on digital ocean. I spun up 20x nodes with 3 xeon golds for this.
But i think the howtos are a bit much and over complicated.
I run xming so i have a window s xmanager. (Open source)
Goto digitalocean tell it to spin upx nodes you are willing to spend. The 0.022/hr is the sweet spoton cost amd performance.
Dont worry about crap or preshared keys. Tell it to just email you rootpasswords.
Ubuntu 3 core at $15/month or 0.022hour
Login it will ask you yo change it
More /proc/cpuinfo
Does it say xeon gold? If so keep if not destroy.
I find its about 50/50 to get a gold xeon. Spun up about 38 yo get the 20 i am running
Ok if its gold?
adduser whatever
Then run
apt get update && apt -y install boinc-client boinc-manager
When its done log out.
Ssh -x whatever@ip from email and run boincmgr
Pick prime grid... Login voila
Once you get this you can spin up and have a node running in 4min 15-30sec
I timed it since i did so many

Why does it do this? Is it because I use an app_config to limit my running task threads to be equal to the number of actual cores, so half of the logical processors available?
What's the problem with aborting tasks anyway? Don't they just go back in the queue for others to pick up and crunch? I am not sorting through them to find ones where I am the first cruncher; I abort everything.
By the way, when this challenge is over, I will have several thousand tasks to abort, thanks to BOINC's bad behavior. Just giving you a heads up. I hope no one has a meltdown because of it. | |

Hi RFGuy_KCCO,
Just curious if the preferences setting "Max # of simultaneous PrimeGrid tasks" would help limit the number of tasks downloaded to your computers even though you are using an app_config file. If you figure out how many concurrent tasks your highest core-count machine on a certain venue uses, then add 1 or 2 to that and set the "Max # of simultaneous PrimeGrid tasks" preferences to that value, it may alleviate the issue caused by BOINC here. You will still download some extra tasks, but it will be severely limited. The addition of 1 or 2 to the maximum allows tasks to be downloaded before they are needed, to avoid any delays between tasks.
If you haven't tried it; it may be worth a try.
And aborted tasks really aren't a problem. There is an observation bias which makes someone more likely to notice when they receive the task generated to replace the aborted task, but in the end aborted tasks will benefit the wingman exactly 50% of the time and disadvantage the wingman exactly 50% of the time. For every aborted task there is someone who received the companion task at the same time who now has extra time to crunch it and someone who receives the aborted task who now has less time to crunch it. You're just much more likely to notice the second case :)

There are two cache settings in boinc. Looking at the local override, there is:
Store at least x days of work
Store up to an additional y days of work
I set both of mine to zero. It may also help to set PrimeGrid weight to 0. | |

I think the resource share set to 0 or --- will stop the extra tasks being sent to you.
But when it is set to 0 and you want to bunker, the resource share can't be set to 0.
It sends one task out for one task returned set at 0.

Nothing what is configured in app_config.xml is taken into account by the client in work requests.
Particularly:
1.) max_concurrent and project_max_concurrent have no influence on work requests.
(Well, AFAIU the newest client release does take it into account in a limited way, when you have more than one project active, non-zero resource share, and non-zero work buffer. This is meant as an improvement for long-term set-and-forget use cases, not for competitions.)
2.) avg_ncpus has no influence on work requests either. The client will request as many tasks as if they were single-threaded.
A workaround for both points is:
- Don't set any max_concurrent or project_max_concurrent.
- Set avg_ncpus to 1, regardless of your cmdline setting.
- At the same time, set the % of logical CPUs to be used by boinc low enough to have only as many tasks running concurrently as you originally intended.
This workaround goes in combination with 0 day work buffer, and optionally with 0 % project resource share. | |

one more thing if you want to avoid fetching several hundreds of superfluous tasks.
If the host ran one PG subproject in the past, and you switch it to a new one which it didn't run yet, the client may easily underestimate the prospective run time of the new tasks by several orders of magnitude. If you have a work buffer setting of, say, 0.01 day, the client may fetch work for much more than a day in this situation. Hence, prefer a 0 day work buffer when you begin to run a new PG subproject, until the client gets its application flops estimation reined in. | |

There's a system whereby anyone can import their own residues if they did any testing on their own, so the answer to your question, in general, could be "I have no way of knowing."
However, in this particular case, we did import all the PRPNet residues for the Sierpinski (+1) side of the 27 project, since 27 is on of the k's we're testing. If the k of the workunit you have is 27, that's probably where it came from. I believe the current PRPNet 27 leading edge is about 7.5M, so we would still be doing double checks on that particular k.

With five hours remaining in the challenge, it's time to remind everyone...
At the Conclusion of the Challenge
When the challenge completes, we would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's (and then UPDATE the PrimeGrid project) instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.
ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.
Likewise, if you're shutting down the computer for an extended period of time, or deleting the ViM (Virtual Machine), please ABORT all remaining tasks first.

The same way you do anything remotely. You connect your BOINC Manager window (or BOINCTasks, or whatever you like to use) to the remote computer. That's the point of the steps in the setup about opening port 31416 in the firewall and setting gui_rpc_auth.cfg and remote_hosts.cfg to grant you remote access.
Once you have access, you control a remote computer the same way you control a local computer.
In BOINC Manager, click on File/Select Computer... and enter the IP address and BOINC password of the remote computer. If you set everything up correctly, it should connect to the BOINC client on the remote computer.

Note to anyone using cloud server for the first time:
You must completely delete/destroy a cloud server to stop getting charged for it. Turning it off is not sufficient.
Depending on which service you're using, there may be other resources you need to delete too.
On Digital Ocean, you get charged for droplets (even if they're turned off), and images, snapshots, and backups. You do NOT get charged for firewalls.

That only works until there's only a small number remaining. Then you're at the mercy of individual tasks at computers that are running only briefly each day, or have stopped running and will timeout.
The rule of thumb I use is that the cleanup will last between 3 and 6 times the task deadline. With a four day deadline the estimate is 12 to 24 days.
