So the Radeon VII is faster, but not that much faster. I guess you'd need the full fat MI50 with about 2x FP64 to get a serious speedup.

FP64 is irrelevant for Lucky. In fact, of the 14 GPU projects at PrimeGrid, it's not used at all by 12 of them and isn't used for any of them by most GPUs.

It's time to stop looking at DP speed as the benchmark for how useful a GPU is.

The main point of the above was to provide info on performance of the Radeon VII regardless how it does it. It is a new card, and I'm sure many are curious at how it performs.

Secondarily, it was to compare where OCL transform can and is used. Without grabbing a calculator, the Radeon VII is ball park 15-20% faster than a 1080 Ti in GFN20/21/22. If we had MI50 like FP64 rates, maybe that would be more interesting.

The Lucky sample test was just to give an indication, regardless if FP64 is used or not. That's what it would do.

Based on those numbers the difference is:

GFN20 -26%
GFN21 -22%
GFN22 -16%

FP32 and FP64 according to what I could find:

1080ti
11.3 TFLOPS single precision
0.355 TFLOPS double precision (1/32)

2080ti
13.4 TFLOPS single precision
0.421 TFLOPS double precision (1/32)

Radeon VII
13.8 TFLOPS single precision
3.5 TFLOPS double precision (1/4)

edit to clarify % as a decrease (in time)

It sounds like you are saying that two projects *would* benefit by a strong FP64 card like the Radeon VII. Which two?

GFN-21 and GFN-22. Those are the only two GFN projects that are not beyond the OCL b-limit. Modern Nvidia CPUs have much slower DP performance relative to their integer performance, so on most Nvidia GPUs (everything back to the 6xx series) OCL4 (integer) runs faster than OCL (DP). Genefer tests each usable transform at the start of each test, and will use whatever is fastest.

So if you have a functioning GTX 580 that's still sucking electrons out of the wall socket, it will use double precision on GFN-21 and GFN-22. Anything newer probably won't.

(I have no first hand knowledge on AMD GPUs, but Genefer will choose whatever is fastest.)

So if you have a functioning GTX 580 that's still sucking electrons out of the wall socket, it will use double precision on GFN-21 and GFN-22. Anything newer probably won't.

There are also some post-Fermi Titan, Quadro, and Tesla cards that might select the double-precision transform.

I have no first hand knowledge on AMD GPUs, but Genefer will choose whatever is fastest.

FP64 is still faster on some AMD GPUs.

It's faster on Tesla V100 too.
