I have noticed that all three of my linux machines are computing as many tasks as they have CPUs. When I look at other machines they seem to be processing many more (491 tasks with 8 CPUs in one case). How do they do this and is it a good idea?

Hey Nicholas, welcome to PrimeGrid!

What you're looking at are the number of tasks a machine has downloaded, not how many are actively being worked on at a given moment. Generally, it's advisable to only have as many task as you can process rather than hoarding extra ones, as BOINC will automatically download more units a bit before running dry; with that said, if you don't have access to a reliable internet connection (for whatever reason), it is perfectly fine to have a buffer to make sure you have enough work.

Thanks for the explanation. It makes sense now.

I have also noticed that the number of tasks associated with a machine sometimes seems to go down. This makes no sense to me. The number includes error, pending, valid and in progress so I don't see where they can disappear to.

We erase them when the task results are recorded and they're no longer needed.

Notice that the task numbers are above 956 million. They started at 1. If the database had to store close to a billion rows just to store the task information the system would run very slowly!

Those numbers therefore go up when you are sent new tasks, and go down when the tasks are purged from the database.

Units aren't kept forever in the database, they eventually disappear. Obviously the results are stored, and you can check in your account page how many of each task you've completed, but the actual BOINC units themselves are eventually deleted.

Same time as all the other tasks: When those workunits are purged from the database.

When do workunits get purged from the database? There's three parts to that answer:

1) First, you wait for *every* task in that workunit to be complete. Either it returns a result, has an error, or times out. Note that if a timed-out task subsequently either trickles or returns a result, it is "woken up" and potentially goes back into the "in-progress" state'.

2) Once all task are completed (step 1), a timer is started. This timer varies by project, from a minimum of 3 days to a maximum of 30 days. Note that this timer will be interrupted if a previously completed task is woken up. If that happens, when the timer restarts, it starts again at 0.

3) Once the timer (step 2) expires, the workunit is purged from the database, unless we have suspended purging for that project. Database purging is suspended for projects when there's a challenge or challenge cleanup in progress. Once the cleanup is completed and purging is enabled, workunits that are past the timer (step 2) are purged immediately.

Thanks for the explanation in an overall sense. I kept wondering why those tasks stay around for so long and even looked at a couple and they showed complete by at least 2 folks.

2) Once all task are completed (step 1), a timer is started. This timer varies by project, from a minimum of 3 days to a maximum of 30 days. Note that this timer will be interrupted if a previously completed task is woken up. If that happens, when the timer restarts, it starts again at 0.

So on step 2, say I do a task, return it and it's validated. Then once it's double checked, is that what you mean by woken up "again" or is the entire set of tasks described include the initial and double check process and if so then what would cause it to be woken up again?

3) Once the timer (step 2) expires, the workunit is purged from the database, unless we have suspended purging for that project. Database purging is suspended for projects when there's a challenge or challenge cleanup in progress. Once the cleanup is completed and purging is enabled, workunits that are past the timer (step 2) are purged immediately.

And this answers another of my questions. I figured during a challenge and cleanup period that at the very least tasks from the challenge were not purged until the entire cleanup was done.

Thanks again for the answers, Rick

I worded that poorly. What I meant was that a task that has timed out will be woken up if it later either trickles or returns a result. In some rare cases, tasks that have errored can also be revived.

So what about why sometimes the workunit is only a stub and sometimes it actually works? It seems it always works once your own processing has finished, but I see no pattern beyond that.

If by "stub" you mean when the work unit page hides certain information, we do that because some people were using that information to game the system and unfairly make themselves more likely to be the prime finder. We hide the information to make it fairer for everyone.

When it's safe to show that information, we show it.

Sorry if this has been asked and answered but the Aborted and Error tasks showing under the tasks tab, when do those go away?

Cheers

Would it make sense to disable purging for mega primes (and other historically significant workunits), or to move those workunits into a distinct archive table? Then the logs for these tasks could be on permanent display for the curious and for posterity.

Yes, information is power.
People who were clever enough to use that information could take advantage of it.
Now it's very democratic, anyone with access to sufficient dollars can take the lead.
Just like real life.

So apparently I found some factors in the Proth prime sieve. However I cannot see a way of viewing what they are.

There is no way to see what they are and they more or less don't hold any mathematical significance by themselves. They are fairly "small" prime numbers that are easy to generate in huge quantities (what the sieve app is doing, by the way). It's more important that they remove a candidate from a sieve. And while it might be interesting which one they removed, it'd probably bee too tedious and not that useful.

Either way, these days you have to run a lot of sieving to find hits, but few years ago, back in time for the sieve, people had found tens, hundreds and thousands. So listing them wouldn't make sense.

For the Proth Prime sieve, even seeing if they removed a candidate would take quite a bit of effort. That one sieving job affects six different sieve files, depending on the values of n and c. We find so many factors that no effort is made to match up the factor with a host or user.

That's what's called a dat-less sieve. There is no sieve file involved and many factors found are for candidates already removed from the sieve. The percentage of factors found that actually remove candidates from the sieve is something like 28%. Prior to 2012 those factors weren't even kept, just applied to the sieve and discarded.

If by "stub" you mean when the work unit page hides certain information, we do that because some people were using that information to game the system and unfairly make themselves more likely to be the prime finder. We hide the information to make it fairer for everyone.

When it's safe to show that information, we show it.

Would it be correct to say the following?

1. You never hide sieving (because it cannot find a prime)?
2. Once at least one computer has returned an apparently valid result, you no longer hide the work unit?

For a detailed discussion of all the ins and outs, please see last year's Tour de Primes thread. It's been a year and I don't recall every detail of the rules governing when information is displayed, and I don't want to tell you incorrect information.

I think 1 is correct but 2 is not, but I may not be remembering it correctly.

It seems like: As long as you have an unfinished task for a particular workunit, the details of that workunit are hidden for you. As soon as you finish your part of the workunit, it is open for you to see (so you can estimate when the wingman will finish). And at the point you finished your part of the workunit, you cannot influence it, so it makes sense.

It is not entirely clear to me when I can see the details of a workunit which is unfinished, and for which I have never had a task. It is possible in principle that I will at some point receive a task for that workunit. Is this different for sieving jobs (compared to LLR and other jobs that may find a prime)?

If I remember correctly, the exceptions where you can see the details of such workunits are sieves and the "oldest" workunits of every subproject. Everyone can see details of the oldest unfinished workunit.

It works differently. There's no double checking, so we don't worry about people cherry picking tasks by selectively aborting tasks where a wingman is ahead of you because there's no wingman.

If a prime is found, the details are suppressed until the prime is reported. The mechanism is different than what happens on BOINC, but the end result is similar.

I don't like the feeling of pressing this point, but I don't get it. In this
link there is a job gone for over 300 hours and I can see what it is working on. Maybe that's a prime. Probably it's too late to catch up with it now. But may be the hack is to watch for PRPNet jobs that have run on for over 40 hours, quickly test them on superfast hardware and submit the results off to the top 5000 list privately. Just asking. Sorry.

Maybe that is a flawed and implausible hack. But it certainly would not be possible if the final digits were obscured.

That makes no sense to me, sorry. Why would anyone want to do that? In PRPNet, there's no wingmen, so you're ALWAYS first, by definition. Why would you wait for a task to time out and be recycled? On PRPnet, you're the first (and only) task, all the time, no matter what.

If you were thinking the lateness of this task meant it's a prime, sorry, no. It means the person probably turned off the computer, or turned off PRPNet. It's got nothing to do with the result of the test -- which nobody knows yet, because the task hasn't been returned.

Or, lastly, if your just saying "I want to test everything myself", there's nothing to stop you from doing that, except, of course, from the logistical problem of not having as much computing power as that portion of the world that isn't you. You are certainly free to go and run a search all by yourself. Many people do. Just be nice about it and don't search numbers that other people or groups (such as PrimeGrid, GIMPS, SRBase, etc.) are already searching.
