I'm thinking about getting a BEV, i.e., a Battery Electric Vehicle. Not a hybrid like a Prius, or a "range extended" vehicle like the BMW i3 (which has a gas powered generator to supplement the battery. No gas at all, the idea is to never stop at a gas station again except maybe to pick up some washer fluid. Also, never (or almost never) replace the brake rotors or pads either. (That's a side benefit of regenerative braking.)

Anybody have any experience with a BEV? I'm not only interested in the vehicles, but also what the public charging infrastructure is like in your part of the world.

All Teslas are BEVs. When you say hybrid I think you mean e.g the Prius. You can pick up say a 2013 Model S & take advantage of the supercharger network. You could cut your teeth on a 1st gen Leaf, but these have 100mi range at best. USA also has the Chevrolet Bolt.

Yeah, thanks, that was a typo because was rushing, which I've now corrected. I meant "hybrid like the Prius".

I have a friend who lives in Detroit Michigan, USA who loves his Nissan Leaf, it's a full electric NO gas engine at all. His employer already had some high speed chargers installed so he made the switch from his Toyota Prius to the Leaf with no worries about not having enough power to get to work and back home again. I sent him a PM and he can comment further if he chooses.

On the braking, question, I have an electric golf cart and on a full charge it does a great job of braking or slowing down (and suppose to be charging the batteries as well) but as the batteries are used, the braking becomes much less effective so is that the case in a car as well?

Really? That's sort of backwards from what normally happens. If the battery is full, regeneration is typically inhibited since there's no place for the power to go. As long as the battery isn't at 100%, regenerative braking should work.

In fact, at least one BEV has a "Hilltop Reserve" setting so it won't fully charge the vehicle to allow for regenerative braking as you leave home and roll down whatever hill or mountain you live on top of (or wherever it's charging).

You may be experiencing something else entirely. At least in cars, the batteries are huge and expensive -- and sophisticated. To put things in perspective, you could run a typical house for 3 to 10 days on a Tesla's 100KWh battery. In order to protect the battery, the car's electronics monitor the battery's temperature and will heat or cool it, as necessary. (At least in some BEVs).

What you might be seeing in the golf cart is that the battery temperature is rising as the cart is used (both charging and discharging), and at a certain temperature charging (and therefore regenerative braking) is inhibited. It's doubtful a golf cart has heating for the battery, let alone an air conditioning loop to keep it cool.

On the subject of charging & temps be aware the 2018 Leaf does not have temp management system, therefore recharge speed is temporarily inhibited after a few fast-recharge cycles.

Yeah sadly no a/c on a golf cart - sure could use it right now.

Heaters, different story. We can cover and use personal space heaters.

My friend with the Leaf said this:

"I bought a USED 2011 LEAF in March 2014. It had ~22K miles on it and the battery capacity was down 1 bar. All in all, I loved it and traded it in on a NEW 2018 LEAF this past February. I had about 74K miles on the 2011 at the time.

The 2018 LEAF has a MUCH greater range than did earlier models of the LEAF. (I hear that the 2019 model will have even more range). With the 2011 LEAF I would have an indicated 60 mile range after a full charge. I now have about 185-190 mile range indicated with a full charge on the 2018 LEAF. Your range may vary based on driving habits and route (i.e. High speed and hard acceleration will decrease your range).

Most BEVs (Tesla excluded) are not designed for cross country travel. So if you plan to make extended trips outside of town, you should plan to either have a second car (gas powered or ER), or rent one for making those trips. I have the LEAF for my commute and travel around town. My wife has a 2012 Prius we use when traveling cross country. On a full charge, I would not be adverse to using my LEAF for traveling from the Detroit area to Flint or Lansing (approximately 60-65 miles each way), but unless I was guaranteed access to a Chademo charger every 100 miles or so, I would not go further than that."

He is crunching for other projects right now and doesn't have an account here.
