Hello everyone,

I was wondering if it's normal to receive an email reporting that I found a prime "before" my wing man has even validated the results, in one case two days before validation.

This has happened to me on two occasions while recently crunching GFN-15 primes. I know that because they are too small to report to the T5K they are visible immediately, but I would have thought that validation from the wing man would at least be required before being emailed and having it posted on the front page.

Is this the case for all prime finds? Or do larger primes like PPSE and up (those that can be reported to T5K) require validation from a wing man before an email is sent?

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if it's normal to receive an email reporting that I found a prime "before" my wing man has even validated the results, in one case two days before validation.

This has happened to me on two occasions while recently crunching GFN-15 primes. I know that because they are too small to report to the T5K they are visible immediately, but I would have thought that validation from the wing man would at least be required before being emailed and having it posted on the front page.

Remember that you're doing only a PRP (probable prime test) on your computer. We still need to do an actual primality test, and that's done on the server.

When we notice that a GFN task has returned a PRP result, we'll manually start the primality test on the server before the wingman comes in. If that test completes before the wingman's result comes in, there's no need to wait for the wingman because the server's primality test confirms that your PRP result was correct. That's why we are able to mark it as prime and send you the notification before the wingman comes in.

For larger non-GFN primes, sometimes we'll manually verify that the prime is valid, and then set the task to validate without a wingman to speed up the process. But with GFN's it's the fact the the server's primality test is completed that lets the prime be reported before the wingman is done.

And, of course, congratulations on finding that very special pair of GFN primes!

Thank you for the explanation Michael. I'm still learning the ropes as I only just started to seriously look for primes since the TdP. And thanks for the congrats on the "special pair of GFN primes!". Have a great weekend!
