Create a PrimeGrid "configuration app" which downloads an app_config.xml file onto a specified host, built according to the user's specifications in a PrimeGrid preferences page. This would replace the technical process of editing and saving the file for anyone unfamiliar with the XML format and file location.

The PG database stores values for max_concurrent, threads, and avg_ncpus for each app, for each host or host-location. This can be numeric values with range check between 0 and "number of CPUs".

If you feel ambitious there can be canned value sets for "max throughput" and "fastest turnaround", as well as user-defined value sets. There would be such sets of values for each regular PG app that appears in the XML file.

The "configuration app" requires 0 CPU and 0 GPU so that it can be downloaded during any project update by the BOINC client. The server is responsible for issuing only 1 such task upon the user making a request on the PG web site.

The user remains responsible for causing the host to read the app_config.xml file (in the worst case: rebooting) and configuring computing preferences such as % number of CPUs and amount of cache. The web page may describe these settings and prescribe values for them.

This is to help novice users optimize the PrimeGrid workload for their systems. Expert users don't need it.

The time it costs you to build this will be returned many times over for other people.

Of course this would remove a recurring topic of discussion on the forums.

That seems to be asking a lot for many people.

There is probably a way to do it with a proxy server but I won't say more. This would be just a minor convenience to me, but it might help in a big way people who are running CPU farms. Given the current sentiment regarding TdP, there's no motivation to doing that. Let sleeping dawgz lie.

All a novice has to do is learn how to navigate Windows Explorer, search the forums here & edit a file in Notepad.

Also they need to work out how to unhide the "hidden" sub-directory C:\ProgramData

so they can navigate to the BOINC\Projects\www.primegrid.com sub-directory.

Then they need to learn how to save the app_config.xml file as an "xml" file and not a "txt" file suffix.

I find the application Notepad++ useful for editing the app_config.xml files.

BOINC is a very convenient platform for us participants to use, you can set it up, attach a project and start crunching in mere minutes.

However, when you start using it more often than not you use it for more than one project or in the case of PG more than one sub-project, you find out the it is not very accommodating in allocating resources exactly as you want.

As a result, one must grow from being a BOINC novice to a novice+, read the BOINC literature, research the forums and try various configurations to achieve the desired goal. For myself (a novice+) the easiest way is to run a separate client for each project / sub-project.

Aside from the actual crunching, tinkering with the setup is a great part of the fun.

One more thing, there might be a security risk with an app like this.

There is two main application are used on PG for prime searching. LLR is one, Genefer is second. If you are prime hunter, and dont care about badges, and credits, then you, setup all you need for prime hunting in few minutes.
PG provides extremely well sieved data, so you do not need to waste time on sieving ( and sieving by sieve depth provided by PG will take many months).
Only need to download LLR , feed it ,and start. In that case you will always be first, you dont care how to setup Boinc, because you need Boinc at all, you can look for various combination to see what combination give you the best output.
Since there is countless candidates you can make your own sieve, PPSsieve app can help you to take well sieve depth in few days of working on middle class GPU.
And that is all for base 2 ( -1 side) , since PG work on +1 side.
Second, you can always make your own sieve file for k above 10001 on plus side if you wont.
And last, you can make sieve for any other K and any other base.
So there is huge number of combination you have: with setup less then few minutes.

But I also learn that people love to take finished meal, not love to prepare it. That is also what heapen here on PG. People come, make setup, and start. Ok, I can bet that no more then 10% here even know what prime number is. Since you can always see newbie asking: oh I make so much PPS sieve units and found no prime. Why?

Other become terrified in challenge like this when they realized they must return candidate first to become prime founder: then , using -t7 ( on eight core CPU) just to be first.

You dont need to do anything of that.Start searching prime at home, without Boinc, and leave Boinc as is.

You can try to adapt world to you, but in the end you will lost your battle.

If everybody does their own private LLR/GeneFer/PFGW search, without PrimeGrid and Boinc, it will be a complete chaos to figure out what ranges have been checked, what ranges has been checked twice, what ranges have had all their result residues correctly double checked, and so on. /JeppeSN

You are wrong!
There never will be , and there is no chaos.
Why?
Because you cannot report already reported prime :)
I assume that person who will start private LLR search will first do some little investigation , and see what ranges are processed, and what ranges are free. If we look at PG he uses 90% of work on base 2 ( up to K=9999) one base 5 conjuncture and Geneger search.
Rest is free: and rest is endless. So PG systematic search is grain of sand in sea of candidates.
Some examples:
10*3^n +/-1
or take exponent 3445566 and search for all k from 10001 to 100000001 on plus and minus side on base 2 for mega prime
or take exponent 1111111 and use base 11 and search again.. so possibilities is endless and you will never interfere with PG: and you will have your own search: and you will always be first.
For fun I made search of exponent 1778899 and found nice prime .
So searching primes is fun and it is not obligation. And if you dont like PG, and that rule you must be first, take your own journey to prime discovery. That prime will be even sweeter because from start to the end that was your, and your only project!

Neither Primegrid nor BOINC are everything prime number finding. The admins decide what to do, or not to do. For example there is GIMPS doing their own thing with their own client, and I'm sure if you look you'll find other smaller efforts for types of prime number not covered here. I did both SoB and riselsieve before they were taken over here. I suppose the nearest thing to some kind of coordination in other types might be mersenneforum. It's a kinda wider community agreement, you can say what you're doing, and check if someone else might have already done it. Personally I think it is only more important for conjecture or more constrained number formats where variation is limited. For a generic k*b^n+1, picking a random large k is probably safe enough to avoid collision with existing efforts with minimal checking.

Well, you did it to your three hosts and got your P2018 badge. Why do you discourage from doing it now?

If someone attaches BOINC to PG to try to be discoverer of small primes only and doesn't care of conjectures, he/she might want to run inefficient multithreaded configuration forever. I'm not this kind of person, of course.

I am not! This challenge show true face of some users who try to cheat system. I am talking about and to those users. Dont change PG because you need to find prime( and you must be first in that ), If you need prime search it yourself in your house, without any system, and you will always be first!

To others : who follow rules of PG, I wish to find prime ASAP!

I am not trying to prohibit or even discourage people from searching alone. And surely, there is no problem finding "strange" bases b>2 or high enough multipliers k or exponents n so that at least you will know you are first in that territory.

But for the form of primes everybody wants, such as Proth primes with small k, generalized Fermat primes of the form b^N + 1, primes relevant for well-known conjectures (SierpiƄski etc.), some coordination is needed. If PrimeGrid did not exist, we would have to invent it!

Another thing: I would not agree with a strategy where you search something which PrimeGrid is planning to do soon. For example I could search GFN-16 in b values I know PrimeGrid will not reach until next year; then I would be first. But that would seem destructive, to me at least.

Where I say that?
I have conversation with one of PG admins when I ask such data. I was kindly ask
1. not to do that search ( even PG will come in that territory for at least few years)
2. he didnot agree to share well sieved PG data with me
3. he ask me not to even start ( because app from PG is without flow) ,and I can make own sieve using programs from Net.
But when someone tell, ask , and kindly ask not to do that: that I know I will not do that.

PrimeGrid is not just one thing. It is many different things to many people.

What it is:
- A way to find prime numbers.
- A way to boost score on T5K.
- A community via the forums.
- A way to get BOINC credit.
- A way to collect badges.
- A way to solve certain conjectures.
- A way to participate in friendly competition.
- A way to learn about certain math problems.
- A way to practice reading and writing in English.
- A way to contribute to cooperative computing projects.
- A way to learn about certain specialized aspects of computing.
... and more

What it is not:
- A way to get eternal fame. Being on T5K is ultimately transient.
- A social game. There is nothing useful to gain by pissing off other users.
- A way to make scientific breakthroughs. At best it can prove conjectures.
- A way to claim certain prime-finding prize money. The primes are not big enough.

Not all of these things are working in unison. There are competing interests.
But what is unfair or cheating in one context is not in another.
Some people forget this, and focus on PrimeGrid for just one thing.

Because of competing interests it is necessary for project administrators to enforce parameters which balance these interests.

Examples:
You want to maximize BOINC credit? You must turn in valid results checked by others.
You want to solve a conjecture? Maximize your throughput and don't be distracted by other objectives.
You want to be credited as prime finder? You must find a way to turn in results before others in a way that does not negatively impact other objectives.

Do you know how to make BOINC run more efficiently for a given objective?
Can you design and write faster software to solve PG tasks?
Do you know how to make the hardware run faster?
Do you have lots of money to throw at hardware?
Can you see the limitations of the system?

If you are selfish, you do these things without sharing.
If you are community-oriented, you talk about it.

Any thought to including PRPNet stats on the home page? Digits, prime rank, app type, and sub-project name would be useful. Number of PRPNet tasks isn't needed. If stats couldn't be automated, manual updates weekly or monthly would be OK.

If PRPNet stats were on home page, PRPNet might attract more interest.

I've closed this thread because it is hopelessly off topic.
