LLR 3.8.20 has recently been released. Besides some performance improvements to the PRP test we will use in the upcoming SoB double-check effort, this version introduces a new gwnum version (28.13) which has various bug-fixes and minor performance optimisations. It also introduces support for multi-threading, which may give some throughput improvement for certain candidates and configurations. Discussion about the release is here.

A new LLR BOINC wrapper (version 8.00) has been produced which provides support for performing PRP tests as well as primality tests, and also allows for setting the number of threads to be used for the test (the default remains 1).

LLR builds are available from: http://jpenne.free.fr
LLR wrapper builds are available from: https://github.com/ibethune/llr_wrapper/tree/master/bin

Before we can roll out the new apps to BOINC, we need to do some thorough testing. A testing spreadsheet is available here:

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1056mv3F5H9gs9MvN6CQyryJBrK-blbfcq-HSPJHyEws

As with previous test efforts there are a range of manual tests, where you need to run the LLR program directly using the command-line (the commands are given at the far right of the document). We also would like to test the multi-threading support carefully, so some of these candidates have additional tests where you add the "-t2" or "-t3" etc. arguments to run multi-threaded. For the manual tests, please post requests to reserve tests, test results (and details of your host OS and CPU / link to BOINC host page). Manual credit will be applied to your account for any tests you complete.

There are also a range of tests to be run under BOINC using app_info.xml. If you need any help setting this up please ask! Make sure you use both the new LLR and the new wrapper binaries.

It is possible to run multi-threaded under BOINC, by passing an additional command-line options to the wrapper (which passes the corresponding argument to LLR). You can do this by adding the <cmdline> option in the <app_version> block in your app_info.xml e.g.:

<app_version> <app_name>llrMEGA</app_name> <cmdline>-t 4</cmdline> <!-- A space is required between "-t" and the number of threads --> ... </app_version>

Please post all of your results, questions, comments in this thread. I will periodically hide posts and update the google sheet to keep the thread tidy.

Thanks in advance for all the testing!

Should I run -t5 and -t6 test on a quadcore?

Yes please, it still tests the code, even if those threads don't run concurrently on different cores.

Help with app_info:

WARNING: turning on app_info will CANCEL ALL TASKS from PrimeGrid. Make sure all your PrimeGrid tasks are completed and reported back to the server before following this procedure.

Having trouble with app_info? Here's the steps you need to make it work. Basically, you need to do two things: put three files in your C:\ProgramData\boinc\projects\www.primegrid.com directory, and in that same directory create a file called app_info.xml.

I like to use different file names for my app_info tests than what we use in production, just in case we happen to update any of the files between now and when this goes live. So all three files have an "RC" somewhere in the name to distinguish them from final production files.

Note that the filenames and/or directories listed here are for 64 bit Windows 7. The names are slightly different on Mac and Linux, for different Windows versions, or for 32 bits.

The three files:

1) llr.ini.6.07_RC: Create a file with this name in the directory listed above, with the following contents:

Work=0 PgenOutputFile=llrout.txt PgenLine=0 Expr=Not yet implemented ExprFile=Not yet implemented ExprFileLine=1 WorkDone=0 OutputIterations=7000 ResultsFileIterations=99999999 DiskWriteTime=10 TwoBackupFiles=1 CumulativeTiming=0 RunOnBattery=1 HideIcon=1 TrayIcon=0 Left=36 Top=23 Right=804 Bottom=535

This is identical to the production llr.ini file, so you can just copy or rename the llr.ini.6.07 file that you already have.

2) cllr_3.8.20_RC.exe: Download the 64 bit Windows LLR console application from Jean Penne's website. The link is in Iain's main post. Rename the file to cllr_3.8.20_RC.exe and put it in the directory listed above.

3) primegrid_llr_wrapper_RC_8.00_windows_x86_64.exe: Download the correct wrapper from Iain's Github repo. The link is in his main post at the top of this thread. As with the LLR program, rename it and move it to the directory listed above.

Now that you have the three files that comprise the app, it's time to create the app_info.xml file. Like the other files, this goes in the directory I listed at the beginning of this post.

If you're on 64 bit Windows, and you used the same filenames that I used, you can use the following example as is. Otherwise, you'll need to modify the filenames to match the actual names on your system.

<app_info> <app> <name>llrTPS</name> <user_friendly_name>SGS (LLR)</user_friendly_name> <fraction_done_exact>1</fraction_done_exact> </app> <app> <name>llrSR5</name> <user_friendly_name>SR5 (LLR)</user_friendly_name> <fraction_done_exact>1</fraction_done_exact> </app> <app> <name>llrWOO</name> <user_friendly_name>Woodall (LLR)</user_friendly_name> <fraction_done_exact>1</fraction_done_exact> </app> <app> <name>llrMEGA</name> <user_friendly_name>PPS-MEGA (LLR)</user_friendly_name> <fraction_done_exact>1</fraction_done_exact> </app> <file_info> <name>primegrid_llr_wrapper_RC_8.00_windows_x86_64.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <file_info> <name>cllr64.3.8.20_RC.exe</name> <executable/> </file_info> <file_info> <name>llr.ini.6.07_RC</name> </file_info> <app_version> <app_name>llrTPS</app_name> <version_num>800</version_num> <api_version>6.10.6</api_version> <cmdline>-t 4</cmdline> <file_ref> <file_name>primegrid_llr_wrapper_RC_8.00_windows_x86_64.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>cllr64.3.8.20_RC.exe</file_name> <open_name>primegrid_cllr.exe</open_name> <copy_file/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>llr.ini.6.07_RC</file_name> <open_name>llr.ini</open_name> <copy_file/> </file_ref> </app_version> <app_version> <app_name>llrSR5</app_name> <version_num>800</version_num> <api_version>6.10.6</api_version> <cmdline>-t 4</cmdline> <file_ref> <file_name>primegrid_llr_wrapper_RC_8.00_windows_x86_64.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>cllr64.3.8.20_RC.exe</file_name> <open_name>primegrid_cllr.exe</open_name> <copy_file/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>llr.ini.6.07_RC</file_name> <open_name>llr.ini</open_name> <copy_file/> </file_ref> </app_version> <app_version> <app_name>llrWOO</app_name> <version_num>800</version_num> <api_version>6.10.6</api_version> <cmdline>-t 4</cmdline> <file_ref> <file_name>primegrid_llr_wrapper_RC_8.00_windows_x86_64.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>cllr64.3.8.20_RC.exe</file_name> <open_name>primegrid_cllr.exe</open_name> <copy_file/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>llr.ini.6.07_RC</file_name> <open_name>llr.ini</open_name> <copy_file/> </file_ref> </app_version> <app_version> <app_name>llrMEGA</app_name> <version_num>800</version_num> <api_version>6.10.6</api_version> <cmdline>-t 4</cmdline> <file_ref> <file_name>primegrid_llr_wrapper_RC_8.00_windows_x86_64.exe</file_name> <main_program/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>cllr64.3.8.20_RC.exe</file_name> <open_name>primegrid_cllr.exe</open_name> <copy_file/> </file_ref> <file_ref> <file_name>llr.ini.6.07_RC</file_name> <open_name>llr.ini</open_name> <copy_file/> </file_ref> </app_version> </app_info>

That defines the 4 apps that we're testing with BOINC: SGS, PPS-MEGA, SR5, and Woodall. If you want to run other apps with the new LLR, you'll need to define those in app_info as well.

Once it's all set up, shut down the BOINC client and restart it. If you are not sure how to do that, just reboot the computer.

Clarification about my app_info:

<app_version> <app_name>llrMEGA</app_name> <version_num>800</version_num> <api_version>6.10.6</api_version>
<cmdline>-t 4</cmdline>

The app_info I posted is intended to run, on a 4 core system, a single LLR task running multi-threaded using the "-t 4" parameter.

Remove that line from the app_info.xml file if you don't want to run multi-threaded (in four places, once for each of the SGS, MEGA, SR5, and Woodall apps.) If you DO want to run multi-threaded, leave that line in place and configure BOINC to run with 25% of the CPUs. Adjust those numbers as needed if your system has other than 4 CPUs.

For testing purposes, I find that running a single multi-threaded task is advantageous.

Oops.

I accidently reserved a bunch of tests that ich_eben* and pschoefer had already reserved. I missed the reservations in the earlier posts.

Although I duplicated some work, I was also running the multi-threaded "yellow"yellow tests. As far as I can tell neither of you ran or reserved those MT tests, so I'm adding my name to those seemingly unclaimed yellow boxes . Please let me know if either of you were planning on running those. I haven't read all of the forum posts yet and am still making my way through the list as I update the spreadsheet. I'm on "update duty" today. :)

Yeah on SGS for me it takes 932.88 seconds to run 4 tasks as a 4 core multi-thread versus 597.3 for 4 running 1 per core.

That is a slowdown I didn't expect. BTW I am running a i5-6500 with DDR4, OC'd to 3200. Using BOINC with app_info.

On a personal note, because Iain is busy this weekend, I'm updating the testing spreadsheet. I just spent two hours updating the spreadsheet from the forum posts in this thread. Two hours!

I'm not complaining. Just the opposite. I'm incredibly impressed by the enthusiasm everyone is showing for helping with the testing. You all are fantastic! Thank you!

It's only been about 24 hours and already most of the tests are reserved. The only big holes are SSE3 Windows manual tests, and 32-bit everything. And wouldn't you know it, one of my two ancient 32 bit computers died a couple of days ago. One thing's for sure, I'm not running the full-size BOINC Woodall on a 32 bit Sempron! (Roughly calculations estimate that would take about 3 weeks, running 24/7.)

Thanks for all the testing so far (and to Mike for keeping the spreadsheet up-to-date). Please remember to post if you want to reserve tests before you actually run them! Also, if anyone has 32 bit machines lying around, we could use some help on the 32 bit tests...

Cliffs on whether running one task on four threads has better throughput than running four tasks on one thread each?

Well, It may be a bit off topic for this forum, however, multithreading has been around for quite some time now, but was only up until this LLR 3.8.20 release, a Prime95 thing. I have tested both PRP tests using P95 and Trial factoring. Most of the time, when doing trial factoring, 100% of the threads are utilized. However, and that is where I really hope that we are as users in the future allowed to choose weather or not we want to run each test on 1 core or each test on n-cores, it was for the most part of the PRP test, only 25-35% (out of 100% allowed to be used) of the CPU capacity there were used, so there was less productivity on my base 383 PRP tests than if I ran on 1 core per test using either 3 or 4 cores :)

So if you ask me, and it appears to still be the case, if you look at the timings the users are reporting, then you will not have an efficiency gain that scales 100% compared to what your total throughput will be if you run one test on one core. Said in other words, unless something has or will change, you will most likely be more productive, running 1 test per core.

Just my 2 cents, the admins can delete or remove this post to other threads if this reply should not be fit here - wich it most likely isn't :)

Take care

You seem to be reading the numbers incorrectly. People have been reporting exactly the opposite of what you're describing.

Much to the surprise of many, we're actually seeing an overall performance INCREASE when using multiple threads -- AS COMPARED TO RUNNING SEPARATE TESTS ON THE SAME NUMBER OF CORES. This appears to be due to improved cache utilization because you're running the same number on all the cores rather than N numbers. Less total memory being used means fewer cache misses, which improves speed. This effect is more noticeable on larger numbers.

For all but the smallest of our projects, at least on newer desktop CPUs, it looks as if you will complete more tasks per day running multi-threaded with the "-tN" parameter than you would by running N single threaded copies of LLR. So not only will each task complete faster, but your overall throughput will improve as well.

But, as with everything, your mileage may vary. I'm running tests right now on an older laptop that definitely does not benefit from multithreading. But it looks like most of the newer Intel Desktop CPUs do noticeably better running a single multi-threaded task than running multiple single threaded tasks.

Why is this a failure? Look at the output. LLR ignored the -t option.

I don't know if this is intentional or not. This exact same binary DOES run multiple threaded correctly on my i5. But on this single core CPU it's ignoring it. I don't know if it's a bug or a feature. Either way, it's impossible to test the multi-threading option on this CPU.

I've marked those tests red for now.

Since I can't do any multithreaded tests with that machine, I'll RESERVE all the remaining single threaded manual tests for Windows 32-bit. I'm probably not going to do the BOINC SR5 test on that computer, and definitely not going to do the Woodall BOINC test.

FAILURE Windows 32-bit Prime? SOB tests (2 through 6 threads). Host 372569

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents>cllr -d -q"21181*2^1576364+1" -t2 Starting Proth prime test of 21181*2^1576364+1 Using all-complex x87 FFT length 128K, Pass1=128, Pass2=1K, a = 3 21181*2^1576364+1 is not prime. Proth RES64: 14DF8A91A23FA805 Time : 12565.727 sec. ...

Why is this a failure? Look at the output. LLR ignored the -t option.

I don't know if this is intentional or not.

Having investigated how the multi-threading support in gwnum works, it is only supported for 'two-pass' FFTs (which includes all of the candidate sizes we run at PrimeGrid) and only for SSE2 or newer instruction sets. So older CPUs (like Mike's venerable Sempron) will not run multithreaded even if the -t argument is passed to LLR.

So if anyone has an SSE2-capable 32 bit CPU and would like to run the 32-bit multithreaded tests, that would be great!

Update: testing is going so well we have opened up an additional set of tests - which involve using the functionality of the new wrapper to optionally perform PRP tests. We have loaded a set of (very short) candidates from the SoB double-check to the PrimeGrid test server http://dev.primegrid.com. To do these test, connect your BOINC client to that server and select SoB in your project prefs (on the dev server!). You do NOT need app_info, the new wrapper and LLR are used by default on the dev server.

There are two different test types. For SoB you will see something like this in the stderr.txt:

LLR command line: primegrid_llr -d -oDiskWriteTime=1 llr.in

For SoB-PRP you will see:

LLR command line: primegrid_llr -d -oDiskWriteTime=1 -oForcePRP=1 -oFermatPRPtest=1 llr.in

Please post test results (links to tasks on dev.primegrid.com) here as normal.

Thanks

Note: when Iain said small, what he meant was "microscopic". LLR will probably report the run time in milliseconds. :)

Correctly validated tasks will probably show 0.00 credit.

Also note that these tiny tasks are only for testing the software. When the real SoB DC begins we'll be starting with 2 million digit numbers.

When running tests on the dev server it is possible to configure multi-threading using an app_config.xml file (not app_info.xml). App_config is much less intrusive than app_info.xml and a lot less error-prone i.e. your tasks won't all be lost if you make a typo in the file. The app_config.xml method will also work on the main PG server once the new apps go live. To set up multithreading for SoB tests, create an app_config.xml file in your BOINC_DIR/projects/dev.primegrid.com with the following content:

<app_config> <app_version> <app_name>llrSOB</app_name> <cmdline>-t 4</cmdline> </app_version> </app_config>

Please note that for the small (micro!) candidates being tested, LLR will not actually use multiple threads, but you should see that -oThreadsPerTest argument being passed to LLR in the stderr.txt output.

Cheers

I knew that having to go through 6 different Windows ISO downloads just to get my Atom N270 Netbook updated to Windows 10 would be worth it... that's a 1c/2t 32bit SSE2 capable CPU running Windows 10 32bit. It's a ~15w netbook; granted, it's SLOW, but at least it can do testing. I'll be doing the -t manual tests for now.

Btw, I just started the test and there's a "Missing or invalid NewPGen header, next data lines will be flushed..." message; still, the tprogram seems to be running (#24,7ms per iteration on SGS). Is the message a concearn, or should I just ignore it?

Sweet! Any estimate on when multi-threaded tasks will be integrated with BOINC?

When this version of LLR goes live, you will be able to use multi threading by utilizing app_config to pass the -t switch to the app. If you are testing right now using app_info, you can specify the -t parameter in app_info. Using app_config gives you the most control over mulithreading, and is very easy to set up.

Btw, I just started the test and there's a "Missing or invalid NewPGen header, next data lines will be flushed..." message; still, the tprogram seems to be running (#24,7ms per iteration on SGS). Is the message a concearn, or should I just ignore it?

That message implies that the contents of the SGS.txt file were not correct. It should contain exactly:

10000000:T:0:2:3 1300274732577 1290000

Cheers

- Iain

But that's exactly what it contains, save for a maybe an extra blank line after the 1290000

At any rate, the first of the SGS results is in:
C:\Users\Paulo\Desktop\Arquivos\NEtbook>cllr -d SGS.txt -t2 Missing or invalid NewPGen header, next data lines will be flushed... Starting Lucas Lehmer Riesel prime test of 1300274732577*2^1290000-1 Using zero-padded FFT length 128K, Pass1=512, Pass2=256, 2 threads V1 = 5 ; Computing U0...done. 1300274732577*2^1290000-1 is prime! (388341 decimal digits) Time : 26070.650 sec. Starting Proth prime test of 1300274732577*2^1290000+1 Using zero-padded FFT length 128K, Pass1=512, Pass2=256, 2 threads, a = 5 1300274732577*2^1290000+1 is not prime. Proth RES64: 192EB857A527F7F7 Time : 25557.345 sec.

Btw, look at those runtimes... testing will take a while.

Okay, maybe not "a while", but rather "a LONG while"...

So if anyone has an SSE2-capable 32 bit CPU and would like to run the 32-bit multithreaded tests, that would be great!

But OS is 32 bit ;)

Hm?

What was it? 37 hours for 1 test, with 4 more to go before finishing the Mega table? Yea... See you guys next week.

The SR5 +1 test took over 4 days on the 32 bit Sempron. It might take me another week just to finish the rest of the single thread tests.

When this version of LLR goes live, you will be able to use multi threading by utilizing app_config to pass the -t switch to the app. If you are testing right now using app_info, you can specify the -t parameter in app_info. Using app_config gives you the most control over mulithreading, and is very easy to set up.

Wouldn't it be possible to avoid app_config and/or app_config by placing some additional check boxes in the web interface configuration area (check box for MT: yes/no and a number field for # of cores to be utilized)?

Michael.

Can it be done? Yes. Can it be done satisfactorily? Not really. There's significant limitations to what can be done that way. The checkbox (turn MT on) is relatively easy. It's the part that lets you -- as opposed to PrimeGrid -- decide how many cores to use that isn't really there.

App_config gives you complete control over how you want multi-theading implemented, and is very, very simple to use. (Unlike app_info, which is horribly complicated.)

We may revisit this in the future. The real purpose of this LLR release is to support PRP mode for the SoB double check. The multithreading is merely a pleasant coincidence. We did make some changes to allow it to be used via app_config/app_info. Until we know more about how it operates in actual production, it's premature to attempt to configure it for wide distribution. Once people have experience with it, and we have an idea of what works best for most people, we can consider whether we want to make MT available via the web interface. But it will only be an on/off type of control. You won't be able to select how many threads you'll want to use. That's the main reason we're not even considering doing it now.

I can help with 32 bit test.
Tomorrow I will get access to Pentium 4 Prescott A 2800 MHz (without HT).
Iain told me to try multithreaded ones so I will start with SR5 -t2. Ok?

Can you work first on the grey boxes i.e. tests that need to be done, before any of the yellow ones? I would start with the 'BUG4' ones since they are at the end of the list, it's least likely Rafael has started them yet.

Also, can you post a link to the host page in BOINC?

Cheers

I am looking forward to the release of this as soon as possible, with no intention of getting involved with hyperthreading. I hope the complete implementation of that comes afterwards of course*, so everyone is happy... but let's just get this new LLR into general release, shall we? As far as I've read, that's the general idea anyway. So this is essentially an elongated "+1" and "thumbsup" post. I look forward to carrying on the PSP double-check, as well as the coming SoB.

Crunch munch Crunch munch.

*Unless it sounds good, but real-world tests show that it doesn't offer any benefits.

"cllr.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience"

It was my bad, I used:
cllr -t 2 -d -q"66666*5^1560000-1"
it should be
cllr -t2 -d -q"66666*5^1560000-1"
(no space between "t" and "2").

Since LLR 3.8.20 is now live on all sub-projects, I suggest that people complete any tests that are in progress, but don't start any new ones. I'll still give credit for any additional completed manual tests.

Cheers

- Iain

How many cores may I throw at one Work Unit? Is there some kind of limit?

There is no hard limit, but how much speedup (if any) is obtained depends on your hardware (cache size / memory bandwidth) and the tasks you are running - multithreading will work best on large candidates e.g. WOO, rather than short candidates like SGS and PPSE.

There is very little guidance we can give except to benchmark on your own machine and decide what you want to do.

Throwing too many cores at a unit may actually decrease performance in absolute time to completion, not just overall throughput, particularly on the smaller projects, at least it did on a dual-cpu mac of mine.

Run times increased on SGS when I went beyond 3 cores. It may be OS-specific (I was testing on OSX), it may be hardware specific (my cpus I was testing on didn't have AVX).

For me, a good balance between performance and micromanagement seems to be to have multicore set for everything except PPS, PPSE, and SGS, with a 4 core max, but always leaving a physical core free for GPU tasks (except for my 5930k, which I'm testing at 5).

To echo Iain's comment, you really have to test it yourself on individual hardware/OS/project combinations.

My experience (with Woo) is basically that it:
works pretty well to run 3 thread on 4-core CPUs and gains
is slower on 2-CPUs system running 7 threads (usually CPUs)
