Message 105093 - Posted: 17 Feb 2017 | 11:41:19 UTC

I am wondering if there a way to permanently leave PrimeGrid? The turnaround times for my cpus always leave the poor things overheating and the deadlines for turnaround are over limiting on my cpu stress so I want to leave PrimeGrid permanently. Asking someone in the chat was useless as all they told me was to post here.

Depends on how far you want to go...

To stop getting PrimeGrid work, go to the BOINC client, select the project and select "no new work". Any existing tasks will still complete, unless you manually abort them in the client.

To delete PrimeGrid files from your PC, just remove the project from BOINC. If you decide to delete PrimeGrid, please manually abort any existing work first so they get recycled faster.

The main reason that you are seeing this behavior is that you have selected some of the largest/longest work types of primes to search for here at PrimeGrid.

To get shorter turnaround times, you should select PPSE or SGS as prime finding projects.

To reduce the heating, you might choose to sieve rather than prime search. LLR, which is the program used for most of our CPU prime searches tends to make a CPU run hotter than normal. The sieve programs do not stress the CPU as much, and thus run cooler. For quicker turnaround times with reduced heat, you should select either the GCW sieve or TRP sieve projects.

mackerel has given you the correct info on how to leave PG, but I hope that you will consider trying some of my above suggestions before you decide to leave us.

I am wondering if there a way to permanently leave PrimeGrid?

To answer your question directly:

Step 1) Abort all of the tasks that you have in progress.

Step 2) In the "projects tab", select PrimeGrid and click on the "Remove" button.

The other's answers are valuable if you decide to stay and resolve the problem.

EDIT: It's not "permanent" in as much as it won't block you from joining again should you decide to do so, but otherwise BOINC won't get tasks again from PrimeGrid unless you decide to reattach.

This is good advice.

If even that is not cool enough, there is yet one more thing you might like to try before leaving.

There is a setting in your computer prefs to only use so many percent of CPU time. This should allow tasks to run cooler -- but they would also run longer, so I do not know how useful you would find this setting.

Like the others, I also hope you will find a way to stay with us that is friendly to your hardware.

I would use the option to set it different to 100% CPU utilisation rather than time as time will induce rapid thermal cycling, 75% CPU = 3 cores e.g.

that was already done - the manual abort of the work units. Does PrimeGrid kill your data after so many days or months of inactivity?

I didn't ask for them, BOINC just grabbed whatever was available - and I didn't know that you could configure which kind of packets (work units) you wanted BOINC to process.

I use legacy (and I do mean Legacy) computers such as the one in use now - a Pentium D Dual Core 3.4Ghz) and the beasties just can't handle the fast turn around time that say a Core i3 or better can.

Looks like you first signed up here a long time ago. I think the defaults back then were to do anything. More recently, it has been changed for new users so that safer defaults are offered until they are manually changed, but this doesn't apply for older users.

BOINC doesn't do that. The best you can do is simply not come back.

Unlike, say, an online game, the point here (or at any BOINC project) isn't your own experience -- it's to perform some sort of science (or other work) as part of a large group effort. Deleting users would cause holes in the data.

Looks like you first signed up here a long time ago. I think the defaults back then were to do anything. More recently, it has been changed for new users so that safer defaults are offered until they are manually changed, but this doesn't apply for older users.

Mackerel hit it right on the nose there. A few years ago I changed the server to make sure that new users would only get short, easy to process tasks unless they specifically requested something different. Before that, however, at least some of the time new users would get anything, and the resulting experience was often a lot like your experience. Unfortunately, had you been an actual new user rather than someone returning from long ago, you would have only been sent short tasks. But your existing account from 9 years ago simply obeyed whatever settings it was left with from back then.

I use legacy (and I do mean Legacy) computers such as the one in use now - a Pentium D Dual Core 3.4Ghz) and the beasties just can't handle the fast turn around time that say a Core i3 or better can.

Actually, we're very lenient on deadlines. Unlike other BOINC projects, we put in a custom feature that allows the server to extend deadlines dynamically to accommodate slow computers. If your computer is actually working on a task and making progress, the server will extend the deadline to allow it to finish. This lets people use really slow computers, while still quickly detecting abandoned tasks so they can get sent out again to other computers without waiting weeks or months.

I'm personally running two computers every bit as old as yours. It's a waste of energy, of course -- they're vastly less efficient than a modern computer -- but they're sitting in my basement, and it's winter, and my basement is electrically heated. Essentially they're space heaters that also do BOINC work for free as they're heating the basement. Otherwise, it would be hard to justify the electricity usage; it would be more cost efficient to buy new computers that do far more work per kilowatt/hour.

How does one get selective about the work units under primegrid? The only way I knew how to get packets is to take what is given you by the distribution server? Kinda like Seti@Home .. take what you are given...

It's the same on all BOINC projects (including SETI). We just have a lot more options than most projects. :)

Look to your left. See where it says "Your account"? Click on that link. That brings you to your account page. On that page, under the "Preferences" section, click on "PrimeGrid preferences". That brings you to the page that shows what your settings are, and if you scroll downwards and click on "Edit PrimeGrid Preferences" you'll be able to change them.
