Taking a strong, impossible-to-ignore hint from PG's illustrious leader, I'm reposting this request in a place where people can actually comment on it. I thought that a forum titled "PrimeGrid" was an appropriate place to start a new thread about PG site improvements, even if it was 10 years old and not visible on the main list.

And I apologize for posting in Problems and Help, where I was genuinely concerned the that thread I selected would not be seen after discovering the PrimeGrid forum didn't magically reappear in the main list. Anyway I answered my own question. Just clicking on the "Search forums" button up there without any search text shows all the most recent posts and forums that were hit, no matter where.

But I digress...

The PG home page is getting quite long with the list of "Other significant primes". Yes, this means we're doing great! But we are also a victim of our own success, and it impacts user friendliness of the home page. This situation will only become worse with continued prime finds. Can the list be limited to maybe the top 5 or 10 official announcements from each subproject, with a link to a separate page for the full list?

(This is not sarcasm...) I'm certain you're more artistically inclined than I am. Give us something better and we'd of course consider it. But please don't be insulted if you submit something and we decide not to use it.

I'm not sure I'd want larger, however. At least not on every page.

Mike, regardless many of mine question to you, and to Primegrid, and including all types of work you do on Primegrid, I consider you, any your team , one of the best I found on Internet. You have patience that is extremely flexible.

So giving me offer to make banner for Primegrid , I am honored. Give ma day or two, and will post here, in this thread some suggestions.
Thanks

Um.... no.

My preference (being American) would be 11/19/2016, but that's pretty convoluted in a large portion of the world, so the two choices are 2016-11-19 or 19-11-2016. Of those two, I much prefer 2016-11-19, since it's in sort order, which makes a lot more sense to me. I have trouble looking at "19-11-2016" and parsing it into a date.

To be sure, date usage on the website isn't consistent, but I do try to keep new stuff in yyyy-mm-dd format. Sometimes I forget, however, so there is some stuff that's mm/dd/yyyy.

Ok
I also have trouble looking at 2016-11-19 and parsing into date...
And half of times on Primegrid web site is in one format and one half is on the another format: all results is in "my format" here on forum also, in "my format"... etc etc...
And since that info is not on the main page, it is on user page and nobody can see that. I was wondering can be changed.

Thanks for reply

That raises an interesting point. Some languages are right-to-left and ISO 8601 doesn't consider those. Nobody has to "live" under the certificate. It's a data transfer format yet it's intentionally human-readable.

yyyy-mm-dd was taught in school as engineering standard in the 1970s, and ISO 8601 was first issued in 1988. So I guess the engineers must have decided it made the most sense to use something they already knew.

EDIT: A great many people's activities are timed according to the Buddhist calendar which started over 2500 years ago. Of all the calendars to choose from, ISO 8601 chose the Gregorian calendar. Go figure.

Composite, Primegrid page is complex. The reason why I give this suggestion is we have in same time at least 2 time formats: and this is a little bit confusing.
If you look at the bottom of page: there is Generated 12 Dec 2016 | 10:22:49 UTC
If you look at message board posts it says: Posted: 4 Dec 2016 | 3:50:45 UTC
If you look at front page it posts: Another PPS Mega Prime!

On 3 December 2016, 16:11:01 UTC, if you look at the top of the page : it looks like: UTC time 2016-12-12 10:31:18

So, only small "main" clock on page and of course AP findings hast time YYYY/MM/DD, rest has DD/MM/YYYY

If Primegrid is on YYYY/MM/DD so be it: but on all instances.
If Primegrid is on DD/MM/YYYY so be it, but on instances.

And not I look at few things on page in format DD/MM/YYYY ,and when I look at my AP findings, I got lost , since now it is on YYYY/MM/DD format.

yyyy-mm-dd was taught in school as engineering standard in the 1970s, and ISO 8601 was first issued in 1988. So I guess the engineers must have decided it made the most sense to use something they already knew.

For this statement I will tell: parameter and speed of light was many time redefined :) So this can also be case.

EDIT: A great many people's activities are timed according to the Buddhist calendar which started over 2500 years ago. Of all the calendars to choose from, ISO 8601 chose the Gregorian calendar. Go figure.

Compose, can you read Buddhist letters? I cannot, I am sorry, figure that.
On Earth they are many languages, many written words, and I cannot , and will not read them in my lifetime. So they are not interesting in my point of view. You cannot use examples from our little blue dot and give them as examples, there, at Primegrid.

Mike is alpha, omega and rest:and he will not definitely use time format from Buddhist calendar , so , it is irrelevant. Stick to the point.

It is also computer-friendly when looking to sort data by ascending/descending order when the data has already been entered as text/string rather than numeric (when numeric, systems store dates as numeric digits starting with Jan 1, 1970 as Day 1).

Maybe to you, to me it is not case: look at opposite direction: if you, as I was learned that 11.12.2016 is true format, and that format is recognized on the web page, and then when you open AP finding you got 2016-11-12.

Computer languages allow you to express a date in various formats. The discrepancy you describe is most probably due to a programming discrepancy where the code on one page states to use a format of the form yyyy-mm-dd whereas the other page has a format of the form dd-mm-yyyy.

I agree with Crun-chi that consistency of dates across the whole PrimeGrid site would be good. But I think it's currently adequate for casual reading, and I'm not concerned that it might send some people over the edge. If a standard date format is selected, my personal preference is for ISO 8601 format. But if not that, I won't be going postal over it.

== Off topic ==
Re: consistency. One time I asked the server in a local Chinese restaurant about a menu item that was written "beef" in Mandarin and "chiken" [sic] in English. The server went to the kitchen and asked the cook, who split a gut laughing that a white guy found a mistake in the menu. I guess I should have ordered the item by number to find out which one they thought it was.

can you read Buddhist letters? I cannot, I am sorry, figure that.
Yes, I can get by in a couple of countries in Southeast Asia whose official written language is based on Sanscrit. It amazes me how the vowel that follows the initial consonant of a spoken word or syllable can appear in writing in all 4 cardinal directions from the consonant.

If you all call ISO8601 as reference then use it as reference. Simple as that :)

I seen on many forums, when you got PM, then whole page got gray appearance, so it is very marked that you got new PM
Here on Primgrid, when you got PM , only Inbox in corner become bold and underlined. Can you add some "more warning" that new PM arrived?

I'll think about it. It's not high on the priority list, so don't expect it anytime soon.
