Has anyone else seen the problem I've seen while running the AP27 application on my GT 440 under 64-bit Windows 10? While running with the monitor turned off, using the 375.86 driver, it stopped responding to restore the console by turning the monitor back on, then moving the mouse or pressing the space key on the keyboard. The only recovery I found was to turn the desktop off, then turn it on to reboot. This happened several times. 160 Errors while computing so far.

I've now installed the 375.95 driver, but have not run AP27 on it since.

For each driver, I've seen the screen go black once while the monitor was on and I was entering something, starting the same problem.

This appears to be the initial problem in each group of failures:

Incorrect function.

These are often accompanied by several more compute errors from other BOINC projects.

There are no visible error messages on the screen. Where would I look for any error messages preserved over a reboot, but not sent to the stderr or stdout file?

I do not see any similar problem on my other computer, with a GTX 750 Ti under 64-bit Windows Vista with driver 362.00 (all more recent drivers are known to either have problems with OpenCL, or to be incompatible with Windows Vista).

I tried enabling AP27 on the computer with problems again. Same black screen, even if mouse moved, within seconds. This suggests that AP27 2.02 is not compatible with something on this computer, so I disabled it again.

The mother board of that computer is not compatible with much of an Nvidia-based graphics card upgrade. Possibly to a GT 545, if I can find one, but no further. I'm having trouble finding the power requirements for AMD-based graphics boards.

Hi Robert.

You will need a card with at least 1.5GB of RAM.

Robert,

There are problems with at least one of the drivers in the 375.xx edition. It is for this reason I installed 373.06 about a week ago with my newly arrived GTX 1060.

Edit: Your driver (375.86) is problematic. See http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/nvidia-geforce-375-86-whql-drivers-have-major-issues.html (thanks to Rafael @ http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=7079&nowrap=true#100964).

Not that is is much help, but I can say 375.70 is on my main system and GPU crunchers, and I've not had any bad GPU AP27 units with it.

Big caveat: There's a good chance everything that follows is just plain wrong.

My first thought when I saw your post was "Duh! That old, inexpensive, bottom(ish) of the line GPU doesn't have the 1.5GB of memory needed to run this app, so of course it's not going to work."

My old GTX 460 -- a much more powerful GPU from the same line -- only has 1 MB of memory and therefore can't run AP27. Heck, even my top of the line GTX 280 wouldn't be able to run AP27 because it also had only 1 GB.

Then things got confusing.

The server won't send tasks if the GPU has less than 1.5 GB. But you are getting tasks, because your computer is reporting that the GPU has 2 GB. That can't be right, can it? So I look at Nvidia's spec page for the GT 440. (http://www.geforce.com/hardware/desktop-gpus/geforce-gt-440-channel/specifications) It clearly says the GPU comes in 512 MB and 1 GB versions. Not 2 GB.

And then it says it comes in 1 GB and 2 GB "per GPU" versions. ????? I have no idea what that means.

I *think* your GPU has either 0.5 GB or 1 GB of memory, which is why it's having trouble running these tasks. Like my otherwise very capable GTX 460, it simply can not be used for AP27.

For some reason (possibly related to the weirdness from the spec page), BOINC is reporting the GPU as having 2 GB of memory, and I'm guessing that's an error of some sort.

The bottom line is that I think your GT 440 is not capable of running AP27, but I'm not certain.

I know, not a source in itself, but this does suggest there were models (and other models using the same chipset) with 2GB option.

Maybe run GPU-Z or similar and see how much ram that reports?

Some more information: In development, we had noticed that, at least under Windows, GPUs with less than the required amount of memory somehow were able to run. Frankly, we don't understand how. I'm guessing the driver is doing something funny under the hood to make main memory usable by the GPU somehow.

It sounds like this is working for you just enough for the tasks to work, at least some of the time, but sometimes is causing the problems you're seeing.

You are the only person who has completed an AP27 task on a GT 440. In fact, as far as I can tell, you're the only one who has gotten any tasks at all on a GT 440, successful or not. It looks like you have 14 successful tasks, and 163 that failed.

Gigabyte and Palit had 2GB renditions of the GT 440
http://www.gigabyte.com/products/product-page.aspx?pid=4124#ov
http://www.palit.com/palit/vgapro.php?id=1836&lang=en
So they do/did exist.
There are also 2GB versions of the GT 420 (I was eyeballing one on Newegg for $30).

To the OP's issue:
It seems like there might be a hardware fault at play if the display won't come back after it shuts off.
Do any other BOINC GPU projects give the same behaviour?
Does anything like what you are describing happen when BOINC is not being used?
Are you able to run 3D benchmarks or games without issue?

If a hardware fault can be eliminated then i would go with Anthony Ayiomamitis' suggestion and try an older driver version for the card.

Not seen on any other BOINC GPU projects.

Does anything like what you are describing happen when BOINC is not being used?

Not seen when BOINC is not running.

I don't have any 3D benchmarks to try. The few games I have are very old, and don't use any recent types of graphics.

If a hardware fault can be eliminated then i would go with Anthony Ayiomamitis' suggestion and try an older driver version for the card.

I don't have much for checking for hardware faults on graphics cards, so and older driver looks like the next thing to try.

Two lines from BOINC startup:

11/24/2016 12:09:52 AM | | OpenCL: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GT 440 (driver version 375.95, device version OpenCL 1.1 CUDA, 1536MB, 1254MB available, 342 GFLOPS peak)
11/24/2016 12:09:52 AM | | OpenCL CPU: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz (OpenCL driver vendor: Intel(R) Corporation, driver version 1.1, device version OpenCL 1.1 (Build 31360.31441))

So it has 1.5GB, but cannot use it all for OpenCL. Is this enough?

Unclear if the CPU version of OpenCL has any effect here.

The app actually needs 1.4 GB to run, so that might be your problem right there.

No apps at PrimeGrid use OpenCL on CPU cores. You can ignore that message.

okay, back from my trip and can chime in here.

1) The 1.5GB version of the GT440 is probably the OEM version that has 144 shaders (as opposed to the typical 96 shader 1GB variety).

2) I know that AP27 will run under 64-bit Win 10 with 1.5GB NVidia cards. I have done so on numerous GTX 660 OEM cards as well as one GT 440 OEM card. The memory used has been less than 1.4GB and typically peaks at about 1.28GB on those cards. Thus, the 1.254GB available that you have may be just under what is needed.

I would suggest the following potential fixes. First, I would downgrade the driver. The latest drivers seem really hit or miss for me on any given card. Since the GT 440 is an older Fermi chip, I'd drop back to something in the 36X.XX series. I have noticed on current drivers that the memory load on some older cards is higher than on older drivers (likely a result of tinkering that NVidia is doing to optimize things for the newer Pascal memory architecture). Second, turn off the "bells and whistles" in the Win 10 display (i.e., lower color display, etc.), which will reduce the display memory used up by the OS.

A suggestion for the next version of the AP27 application: Near the beginning, check how much GPU memory is available, and report in either stdout or stderr.

Now using the 373.06 driver. First task has been running for 2.5 hours so far without errors. I'll let it continue tonight to see if that fixes the problem.

I'm now testing whether the 376.09 driver fixes this problem.

In case it doesn't, has anyone else tried AP27 2.02 on Any GeForce 400 series cards with 1.5 GB or 2 GB graphics memory? With what drivers, and did it work?

Two tasks completed and validated with 376.09 so far, using a GT 440. I expect it to take days to be confidant that the problem is fixed.

Newest drivers for that card is not always best choice. Personally, I stick with drivers that works OK, and I disable notification about new drivers or automatic update. With new drivers it is always a chance to something go wrong, and eventually you will ( if ?? ) get increase in speed of 1 %.
I am using 372.70 on my GTX 750 Ti ,and it works perfectly. I suggest that you find ( you can do easy on Nvidia page) and install that version.

So far, both 376.09 and 376.19 have worked without problems. Note that SOMEONE needs to try the new driver versions, unless everyone decides to use only the oldest driver version still available.

Would you so kind to tell me, why SOMEONE need to try it? Why you have need to change something it is working?
And last, yes, I agree with you that SOMEONE needs to try new driver, but that need is considered with new cards, and drivers are "polished" for those card performance, not for old card like yours.
