Anyone else out there feel like they've been crunching a long time and still have yet to find a prime? I've noticed the last few primes have been discovered by the same person. It's frustrating to work at it and not see any results. I don't have very fast computers but I have run thousands of tasks and still nothing. The last guy who found a prime, looks like he's found dozens. VERY FRUSTRATING!

Edit: it looks like he has 48 computers crunching, so that's pretty hard to keep up with. He must work at a university and is using their resources to find them. Must be nice!

I would recommend running SGS -- it's the most likely tasks to find primes. Even so, only about 1 in 17000 numbers checked is prime, so be prepared to run a lot of tests.

Also remember that two tasks are sent out for each number, and the first one to return it is the "prime finder" and the second is the "double checker". While having a fast computer certainly helps, it's even more important to not handicap yourself by having a large cache of tasks waiting to run on your computer. Consider what happens when your computer can run the test in 20 minutes while the other guy's computer takes an hour. You should return it first, right? Not if that task doesn't even start running on your computer until tomorrow! So if you want to be the prime finder, set your network controls in your BOINC manager to 0 days + 0 days.

If you are running GPU tasks, I recommend running GFN-15. It's the most likely to find a prime. About 1 in 7000 of those are prime. However, these numbers are too small to be reported to the T5K website. If that's important to you, you can run the GFN-16 tasks. These take longer to run, and only about 1 in 18000 are prime, so it will take longer to find one. But those are large enough to be reported to the T5K website.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try switching to SGS and see what happens. I just recently switched to just PPS because it was taking way to long to run the other tasks. Hopefully running more tasks would improve my chances. I never cache work, and unfortunately I don't have a computer with a GPU that can do tasks. I guess my major failure was running tasks that are too long for my computers.

Yes, if you want a higher chance of finding primes, you don't want to be running long tasks. Not only do they take longer to run, so you're running fewer tasks, but the numbers are much less likely to be prime simply because they are larger. The likelihood of a number being prime decreases as the number goes up.

Berman , I am here at Primegrid from 2009. My goal was to find prime over 1M and I was trying and trying and trying over YEARS, on many projects, processing who know how many candidates, and find no such big prime. But in same time, I was see at least 10 computers, not so fast or powerful, some of them was laptops that come here, make 100 - 200 results and find prime that easily overcome all my primes I found. So one factor is number of candidates that you process, and second factor is luck. Since no one on Earth does not know where prime is , if you are lucky, you will pick up that candidate and your hunt will be over :)

So patience, Berman, only patience is something you are really need.

And some luck :))

P.S If you look at sub-project status, you can see that 1409003 candidates is processed and only 34 primes is found: so in average that sub-project give one mega prime over around 41000 of candidates. And with really fact CPU you will need about 65 minutes per test.. Prime hunting is not for impatient persons.

To echo what Crun-chi said, it is definitely not for the impatient. It took me 4 years to find my first mega-prime, and that is with throwing a not-insubstantial amount of computing power in the mix.

The majority of the primes I have found have been with SGS.

Another option is to run AP27. It doesn't find large primes, but rather finds sequences of small primes. While the goal is to find a sequence of 27 primes, the server records all sequences of 20 or more, and sequences of 20 primes aren't that uncommon. Probably the fastest way to find *something* quickly is with AP27.

In fact, approximately 1 in 4 AP27 tasks returns at least one sequence of at least 20 primes. Since we started AP27, I've found 14 APs of various lengths and was the double checker on 11 more. And I've only been crunching on days when it's been cool enough to not need the air conditioning (which isn't a lot of days.) These tasks take a while to run on a CPU, but each task covers a lot of tests and there's a good probability of finding something.

Yeah I just need to be more patient. I've been off and on working on it since 2010, and after seeing some of the same people getting primes over and over I just got frustrated. I remember having a slow Pentium 4 1.6 cranking for a year or so and had other slower PC s just cranking away and not really getting much done. Now that I have some newer units going I just expected it to happen faster. Thanks for the all the help and suggestions!!

Also don't forget that some people here have an astounding number of computers at their disposal. Someone with 500 computers is going to find a lot more primes than someone like me. They rely on brute force... I rely on luck. :)

As Michael put it, brute force is how many find primes. I also rely a bit on luck, with a little force. I have always tried to maintain 4-5 system running. Currently I have 6, but two of them are older and can handle small stuff, so right now they are having fun on GFN-15 which are not large enough to be reported.

I moved around programs, and even ran PSA for a while, which has a lot less users, so there is a bigger chance to be a prime finder, but less desirable than BOINC because it's a manual process. I found my only Mega prime on PSA.

I never have high end machines.

If you also think about it, primes are harder to find in the ranges we are in. As the ranges progress it will get harder and harder, of course machines get faster and faster, but there is potentially some limit in hardware, whereas primes should be infinite.
