I know more than a few of us build systems significantly for compute uses, and are looking to keep costs low. Recently I've taken interest in unknown brand SSDs and have ordered 4 different ones to try out. These are 60 or 64GB in size, which is plenty for an operating system and other files, and costs under £25. Branded drives can't compete at the low end, although per-capacity branded ones are ok at 120GB+.

Anyway, over the last weekend I've been benchmarking every SSD I can get my hands on to provide context, and today the first two low cost SSDs have arrived. I'll get those tested soon and will see where we go from there...

When it comes to unknown el cheapo SSDs, I don't think it's the benchmarks that are going to be of the most interest, after all, how much speed is required of a hard drive to run Boinc? (Not much)

The real question is reliability, and many of these no name drives use B-grade "scratch and dent" flash, ultra-low cost controllers that can't handle the error correction, and just aren't built to last very long. They're the $20 PSU of SSDs.

As someone with a few compute-only machines myself (and more planned), I too look for a low cost storage option, and I found it in Newegg shell shocker bundle deals (I don't know if the UK site does that). My last score was a 4 pack of 240GB Kingston SSDs that had been released a few years ago for $150 total. Quality drives (with real reliability results found online), newly made, but out of date tech wise, perfect for crunching systems.

Still interested in your results, but in the same way of reading those cheap PSU roundups when they all explode at 70%.

If it's just a compute box, I'd probably go with el-cheapo(tm) brand SSDs. Chances are, they'll work most of the time. If they fail, trash it, grab another $10 SSD out of the bin, load linux, and keep going. Most failures will probably happen within a few days, and after that you're good to go.

You could even make an argument for using a thumb drive as your only disk storage on the system.

A few months ago I bought a couple of Seagate 160Gb SATA drives (3.5") from a major outfit in Germany and which are particularly built for 24/7 use while also having low power consumption.

I got them at a really good price (24 euro each) and received them with great interest. I noticed the manufacture date was April and July 2011, respectively, for the two drives upon unpacking. As bad luck would have it, they were both DOA. They were returned with two replacement drives with a 2015 manufacturer date arriving two weeks later plus a credit to my account for the shipping charges for the return of the defective drives. As you can see, brand name drives can be bad as well even before powering them up.

Further to Michael's comments below, I would also clone the first el-cheapo drive ready to go in action so that an immediate (el-cheapo) replacement is available if and when the initial drive goes.

As my crunchers are still active I haven't managed to connect them to a fast system to bench yet. I did try an older system but I think it was too old, and limiting the SSDs. Once I work out ESP unit timings I might use one of the fast systems to bench the SSDs.

After benching, I could open them up and see what's inside, if it isn't possible from the outside.

USB drives are ok for some linux (I'm using such in my NAS), but Windows doesn't like it. I know, Windows doesn't equal low cost...

Long term reliability is an unknown, and not something I can easily test for short of doing a destructive write life test.

I would sorta disagree. You can download Win10 directly from Microsoft, install it on any machine and use it without a license. Now sure, there are some downsides to that (especially if you use it as a daily driver), but for a 24/7 unattended cruncher, none of them matter. It's almost as if Microsoft was okay with it.

Please do not use PrimeGrid's forums to discuss or advocate what is potentially a criminal activity. While what you describe may not exactly be a state secret, the fact is that Microsoft does NOT give away Windows for new installations, and using the software as you describe may violate the law in many places, including the United States.

There are legitimately free alternatives, such as Linux, which are known to work, and work well, running PrimeGrid applications.

Note going forward:
The "don't talk about extra-legal ways to install Windows here" is not something that's negotiable. We're letting this post remain, but further posts regarding this (or arguing about whether this should or should not be permitted) will likely be hidden. The important thing to remember is that we don't want to do anything that might jeopardise our arrangement with RackSpace.

Ok, some testing done and I've also opened them up for a look. Note I intend to do more relative analysis once all the drives have arrived, so consider this general info.

The KingFast K6 64GB first... sequential reads in the >300MB/s ball park, writes around 85MB/s. Randoms... gonna take a lot more analysis to put in perspective. Opening it up it uses Silicon Motion SM2246XT controller, and there's a single NAND chip taking one out of 4 possible positions, suggesting it could go to 128 and 256GB capacities also. This is on a smaller board on a 2.5" bracket, which might explain why it reports to AIDA64 as a 1.8" drive. The NAND device appeared to have a covered Micron logo on it, and the part numbers didn't turn up in a quick search.

Onto the Hectron X1 60GB. This was able to reach sequential reads of 500MB/s with writes floating around the 70MB/s ball park. Inside I found the SM2246XT once again, but the board had 8 NAND positions available on each side, with 4 devices fitted on the same side as the controller. Again this suggests it could go up to 120 and 240GB capacities, assuming the same NAND was used. NAND had GLOWY on top and h27qdg8d2b8r which comes up as a Hynix part. Indirect info suggests it is 16nm MLC.

The SM2246XT is also reported by AIDA64 to be used in the Sandisk Z440s and PLUS drives I have.

I am actually surprised to see a modernish non-Jmicron controller at work here, the 2246xt is a respectable low-performance/cost part, and it looks like they went with 1 channel operation. I'm also glad you opened them up, nice to see that the KingFast wasn't a counterfeit drive (this was a major problem in the past).

Although to me, reliability of the drive and company are important, and buying direct from China drives that are basically throwaways if they fail isn't something I could live with, even for a dedicated cruncher. As Anthony said, have a spare ready to go for when they fail would be on my list, too. I hope these work out well for you, and I'll keep following this thread for your results.

I had to laugh, though, from the Hectron product page: "A good product pays attention to every detail. With the shockproof protection for SSD and the exquisite package, Hectron X1 makes great effort to impress customers."

I had forgotten how much a pain it is to get images on this forum so I'll simply link to a post I did elsewhere for the test results.

You could even make an argument for using a thumb drive as your only disk storage on the system.

I tried that once. Just once. The thumb drive lasted a few minutes, so I wasn't interested in repeating that experiment.

Depends on the OS... some have been designed to minimise writes so they don't destroy it quickly. My NAS runs off one, and apart from configuration files I don't think it needs to write at all.
