Binary Cyclops Challenge - 06-13 March 2015

Announced is a challenge at the 27 prime search project from the 6th till 13th of March.
We will start at 18:00 UTC and crunch till 18:00 UTC one week later.

If we write 27 in binary:

11011
and compare with 2015 (the current year in the usual calendar) in binary:
11111011111
we see that both have only one zero, one eye, and that this eye is right in the middle, making each number a palindrome.
According to OEIS A129868, these symmetrical monsters are called binary cyclops numbers.

More about the 27121 prime search can be found here. News and infos about the PRPNet client can be found here.

To take part, you have to activate the following lines in prpclient.ini:

server=27:100:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:12006

Stats will be available at the well known place here.

All previous PRPNet challenge stats can be found here.

Good luck!

Hi
I am trying out the 27 prime search project before the challenge starts.
It would appear this is a CPU project using llr64 program. may be wrong, however seems to be working.
setup 2 tasks on a old 980x 6 core but the tasks take forever.

I then used a box with a 780ti and ran the llrCUDA app and that works as well but 4 times faster , after 12 hrs the gpu has done 8 tasks and the cpu 2

Are they both doing the same tasks but by different ways?

The 780ti is running quite and cool at 1200mhz. will it do 2,3 at a time ?

Are there any more settings that need to be amended to achieve better performance?
Cheers

Hi,
A few things about your PSA challenge notices. If you're only interested in attracting longtime PSA users, they're OK. But, the main reason for posting notices is to attract new users. And a new user seeing your challenge notice, is going to say "What the hell is this? I don't know if it's a CPU or GPU challenge. Bye". And you just lost a potential new user.

Add some CRITICAL info to your PSA challenge notices, such as if it's a CPU or GPU challenge, and if it's a GPU challenge, a few recommended ini settings so your tasks run 10 times faster. So many times I've had to read thru dozens of posts to figure out why my tasks were running so slow. A few good words on the challenge notice will save a lot of wasted time and effort.

Always open to suggestions to make things better. 27 is a CPU challenge, but if you can get GPUs to work good luck to you. I am not aware of a GPU LLR app. Try PFGW and LLR before the challenge starts and see which is faster on your system. Do this by commenting out all the LLR exe's in the ini file to force use of PFGW, and visa versa.
// If running a 64-bit system, comment out the llr.exe and uncomment llr64.exe
// If you are running a 64 bit OS, comment out the pfgw32 line and uncomment the pfgw64 line.

For an added boost start processing WU's before the challenge starts. Unlike BOINC challenge points are awarded based on when the result is returned, not when the server sends out the work.

Ross, are you saying you are running the 27 prime project on a GPU? Just double checking and have the results been turned in and validated? I wasn't aware that port was GPU enabled. If so that's really good news. Of course I've been off PRPNET for a bit.

Cheers Rick

I finished 2 GPU tasks this afternoon and received credit for them...

They ran simultaneously, with an unintended reboot in the middle of the run, and took an average of 18230 seconds. When run singly, they average 8897 seconds on my stock GTX 560ti.

I am just as puzzled as Rick Reynolds is....

So I checked my prpclient config file, and sure enough, there's an llrcuda program.....

I was under the impression that llrcuda was slower than CPU... I guess this belief was compounded by the fact that llrcuda is not used for any Primegrid projects...

4x quicker?

I read most of all the messages on the forums... puzzled that I somehow missed this...

Hi
yes llrCUDA does work, and is much quicker , how much exactly I have not worked out yet. At this stage just experimenting.

I was hoping to get more definite info from my first post, but not yet.

I have tried 2 tasks on one GPU but as the GPU is running over 90% load it did not seem to be any better.
Also ran a Titan Z, and managed to do 5 tasks in 12 hrs. one GPU runs 90% load and the other at 60% . will have to play with the setting in the next week.

Next try will running 6 cores and leave 2 cores for the 1 gpu on a 5960 to see what happens.

after that perhaps with HT

The other query is bunkering, It appear, may be wrong on the January challenge that some jumped out to a lead right from the start.

If we can get all options or settings out for everyone, the more tasks get done.

Cheers

after a few hiccups they settled down. a bit of a conflict between 2 prpclient-1 s.
there is a big difference between an old 980x and a 5960 in processing power.

the 5960 users FMA3 and the average time per core is 102 mins, I had to decrease the OC to 3700 to keep the heat below 70c.

the GPU takes less averaging 80 mins , so not 4 times quicker

total tasks was 14 *6 cores = 84 for the cpu and 18 for the GPU = 102 per 24 hrs

so using the GPU adds about 20% to the output.

Next experiment will be trying to run 8 tasks on 8 cores, which would give 114 tasks per 24 hrs if the 102 mins per core holds up. ``

looking at the stats page there seems a huge variation in tasks done and points awarded. why is this? My current points per tasks is 22037 to 22100.
I can not control what task I get, so what is the difference?

also why do some tasks go into iteration ? some don't.

Cheers
Ross*

Mostly because some are "+1" units and others are "-1" (the latter do the iteration thing).

Unless I am missing something, llrCUDA does not appear to obey the gpuaffinity settings in the prpclient. If I try to run on both GPUs in a dual-GPU system, I only end up running two instance on the device 0 GPU. Anyone have any luck with getting it to run on both GPUs?

Also, I think it is optimal to leave one core free for llrCUDA. You shouldn't need more than that per instance of llrCUDA running. This also works well in hyperthreading, as I can run 4 cores at 95% or more of full speed on another application while allowing llrCUDA to interact with the 4 free "cores" from the hyperthread and not take any performance hit itself (obviously, in Windows at least, the CPU applications are sometimes switching to the hyperthread since core assignment is variable in this OS setting without substantial micromanagement).

Are we sure that llrCUDA produces correct results? It's never been "live" on BOINC. Question spans various card/driver/OS combinations.

PRPnet work isn't double-checked (except for when a prime is "found", it would be checked at the Top 5000 site).

Gary,

I can only assume (..!) that the tasks are correct in that I earn credit both on PRPNet as well as on Primegrid via PSA credits.

Scott,

I am finding that the +1 tasks only use a fraction of a CPU, while the -1 use a full CPU in addition to the GPU. I do have two GPUs in this system, but only the GTX 560ti is actively used for tasks. I have a Radeon HD5670 that is the primary display, although it has been used for some PPS-Sieve work in the past. I have not manually specified a GPU in the prpclient.ini file.

So the challenge is a CPU-only challenge?

Will you guys take measures to ensure that nobody (out of good faith) uses the GPU program for the 27 project? After all, it is included in the PRPNet client just like all the other programs, so people will find it natural to uncomment it in their .ini file if they have an appropriate GPU.

I can only assume (..!) that the tasks are correct in that I earn credit both on PRPNet as well as on Primegrid via PSA credits.

Authoritative answer: That assumption is incorrect.

/JeppeSN

We do not support nor recommend the use of llrCUDA, but, much like anonymous platform via app_info on the BOINC side, you're free to do whatever you wish.

The reason I recommend against using llrCUDA is twofold:

1) It's a comparatively poor speed improvement as compared to CPUs. Other applications (WWWW, Genefer, and PPS, GFN, and Cyclo sieves) provide much better performance on a GPU. Using a GPU for LLR is a waste of a powerful resource in my opinion.

2) Using any GPU program where we're not doing double checking (currently everything on PRPNet) is inherently risky because error rates are higher on GPUs than on GPUs. If your GPU is having calculation errors, you'll probably never know it.

Perhaps there is something lost in translation here, but I would prefer that we not imply that participants choices are not "common sense" when their individual motivations (and circumstances) vary considerably.

Not sure about the CPU vs GPU argument but I did complete a task on my GPU and it appears to have validated. I did get credit on PRPNet. I will say that I had to update to the 5.3.2 version before it would work on the GPU and I had to make some adjustments to my prpclient.ini file.

llrexe=llrcuda.exe
gpuaffinity=

Took 7,585 seconds to run on my 770.

So, now I ask, are there any other settings that can be changed such as block size or anything of that nature to make it run faster/slower?

Cheers Rick

PRPNet as we run it here DOES NOT VALIDATE RESULTS & RESULTS ARE NOT DOUBLE-CHECKED - just 'cuz you got credit DOESN'T MEAN THE RESULT WAS VALID.

llrCuda (if one looks at the forums here and at Mersenneform going back several years) appears to have many known issues - and probably a lot of unknown issues.

IMnotveryHO -- It would really suck if you missed a valid prime 'cuz you were running "iffy" application software.

With regards to llrCUDA, I just did a test on my own hardware.

PPSE tasks, with all cores running, take about 8 minutes on my Core i5, and it's doing 4 at once.

A single PPSE task takes 15 minutes on my GTX 580 with the CPU idle, and consumes about 50% more power. Considering the number of tasks being done and the durations, the CPU is more than 10 times as power efficient running LLR.

The GTX 580 is a decently fast GPU, although it's no TITAN. The 500 series was pretty good at Genefer (and presumably LLR) while later GPUs weren't always as nicely optimized for those apps. Compared to the absolute fastest GPUs, the 580 is about half as fast.

My CPU is very fast.

At best, a very expensive GPU might be able to do 1 PPSE task as fast as my CPU can do 4.

I also would trust results from my CPU to be accurate more than my GPU.

At the other end of the spectrum, it takes my i5 about 100 hours to run 4 SoB tasks (all cores running). The GTX 580 would take about 140 hours to run a single SoB.

Update
I have been running 6 cores of a 8 core 5960 for past 24 hrs plus 1 GPU 780ti
after a few hiccups they settled down. a bit of a conflict between 2 prpclient-1 s.
there is a big difference between an old 980x and a 5960 in processing power.

the 5960 users FMA3 and the average time per core is 102 mins, I had to decrease the OC to 3700 to keep the heat below 70c.

the GPU takes less averaging 80 mins , so not 4 times quicker

total tasks was 14 *6 cores = 84 for the cpu and 18 for the GPU = 102 per 24 hrs

so using the GPU adds about 20% to the output.

I can not control what task I get, so what is the difference?

also why do some tasks go into iteration ? some don't.

Cheers
Ross*

Update
8 cores on a 5960 will run 102 mins per task = 14 tasks * 8 =112 per day
I have achieved 15 with a higher OC.

On a 5930 running @ 4100mhz it comes down to 92 mins av on 6 cores
that's over 15 per day *6 =90 and I could add 1 GPU of 18 per day

yes its not that efficient to use GPUs but if your CPU takes longer that 3 hrs it may be a option.

Yes I see the comments about using GPUs [and only 1 will work per box] but good GPUs do DP like 780ti and Titans. all my GPU tasks have been accepted so far.
On 3930k using AVX they take 130 mins, 11 a day per core , 66 per box per day.
So everyone to there own way of doing the work.
To me the 59 box out perform any combination of GPUs, but the slow CPUs like my old 980/970 they need a good GPU to boost the output.
Cheers
and happy crunching

We are now within the timeout period till the start of the challenge, so bunkering can begin, i.e. 72 hours.

I have implemented this for myself with the following settings in prpclient.ini:

server=27:100:10:prpnet.primegrid.com:12006 llrexe=llr64.exe startoption=4 stopoption=3

Once the challenge has started and tasks can be reported to the server I'll Ctrl-C on the Console windows and this will report completed tasks to the server.
I'll then change settings in prpclient.ini to:
server=27:100:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:12006 startoption=3 stopoption=6
and restart. These days I manually edit prpclient.ini in each directory and start by calling prpclient.exe in each directory from a separate Console window.

There are many ways to implement bunkering and its certainly optional. Trick is to make sure you don't report completed tasks before the Challenge starts and to also report them before they expire.

May all your PRP's be Prime!

This morning (UTC) the leading edge exponent n passed 5,000,000 on both 27*2^n + 1 and 27*2^n - 1.

I wonder if we are going to have a "goal" n for this event.

Note: Since 27 is a cube, values of n divisible by 3 are not relevant.

Interesting... I never thought about that. In the related "121" project, since it is a square, can a similar observation be made? Thanks in advance.

Take cubes (or other odd powers) first.

The polynomial x^3 - 1 has x=1 as root and is therefore divisible by x - 1, so:

x^3 - 1 = (x - 1)(x^2 + x + 1)

And the polynomial x^3 + 1 has x=-1 as root (-1 times -1 times -1 is -1) and is therefore divisible by x + 1, so:

x^3 + 1 = (x + 1)(x^2 - x + 1)

So if the n in 27*2^n ± 1 is of the form n = 3*d, it becomes (3*2^d)^3 ± 1 which is composite by the factorization above.

And now to squares (or other even powers).

The polynomial x^2 - 1 has x=1 as root and is therefore divisible by x - 1, so:

x^2 - 1 = (x - 1)(x + 1)

But: The polynomial x^2 + 1 has no roots! The trick does not work here.

So for the 121 project the "minus form" must have exponents n not divisible by 2, i.e. odd n. But for the 121 plus variant, no restriction like this exists. In fact a lot of primes of the form x^2 + 1 are known: the generalized Fermat primes!

Bit of a spanner in my Bunkering effort. The server has a limit of 5 work units. That means I would complete them before the Challenge starts. Even if I hit Ctrl-C my completed work units get reported to the server before the challenge begins. After 1 day of crunching each core has done 3.5 work units.

To continue Bunkering I just close the Console windows (don't hit Ctrl-C). The completed work units are all check pointed. Once the challenge starts I just change to startoption=3 and restart the prpclient.exe and it should report the completed work units to the server. Next I still have more time so I copy prpclient-1 directory to a new number, say prpclient-7. Delete the temporary files and set instanceid=7 in the prpclient.ini and start prpclient.exe and repeat for each core. Now I've got the next set of clients continuing the Bunkering effort. I should have 15 prpclient's with completed work units by the time the Challenge starts.

Roger,

Albeit I applaud your dedication and effort to kicking ass on this challenge... such extremes as "bunkering" as you are suggesting really takes the fairness out of the competition... This challenge is primarily going to be between several of the top teams more familiar with prpnet (i.e. not your average Primegrid user)...

I am surprised that your strategy is even possible after your post... perhaps I misread and misunderstood...

Nevertheless, and regardless, bunker away with 200 prpnet client directories, - AtP is still coming out on top.... :) (hopefully with a prime :)

I won't be "bunkering" (I've also seen it called "mega-dump") as I have no micro-management tolerance these days :-) I may get a "running start" with a full load of 27's beforehand, but won't be saving them up behind the scenes.

Also, thanks to JeppeSN for his thoughtful and understandable explanation to my prior query.

Good luck to all in the coming challenge.

Hi
thanks for that info, but I will be only running half of my boxes with a simple 5 bunker setup. The rest will start 1hr before the start.

Just to make sure that all those saved ? tasks sitting on the server get into the challenge, is the following right.

edit the master_prpclient and change the start and end options and update-prpclient-ini
This should upload all tasks? all the saved tasks in the pending will added to the challenge.

How long do these tasks take on relatively high-end CPUs? My VPS is doing them in 5400 seconds (90 minutes).

This is no new feature :o)
because the statsmaker has no access to the PRPNet-database like the PrimeGrid-Admins at the BOINC-Challenges
All attempts to take into account the current pending work have failed so far. The method, to count out the ongoing workunits at the start of the done tests, unfortunately flawed, for example broken work that has not been reported. So I didn't found any algorithm without a big bug, yet.

I'm too busy during this challenge to do multi-directory timeout busting. I've got some rudimentary bunkering going on so at least I'll have a running start. Someone else can be the fox being chased by the pack.

Edit: correction, too busy before this challenge.

Hmmmmmmmmmm

Edit: so really every prpnet challenge has an extra day? Or too what the timeout period is.

Timeout Periods per sub-project
Sub-Project Hours Days 121 144 6 27 72 3 FPS 216 9 GCW13 336 14 GFN262144 168 7 GFN32768 ? ? GFN524288 144 6 GFN65536 144 6 PRS 384 16 WFS 96 4 WSS 120 5

So 27 is the sub-project with the shortest timeout period. (There are no GFN32768 tasks running at the moment so I couldn't see its timeout period.)
I am sure I'll be a hot favourite for 15th place.

If 800 clients can perform a test on this sub-project in under 7 hours, then this port has no more than about 14 days of work left.

If 800 clients can perform a test on this sub-project in under 7 hours, then this port has no more than about 14 days of work left.

I can add more work on about five minutes' notice. Emails automatically go out when the port is getting low (and it doesn't use the same calculation that's giving the current "567 days left"). But the challenge is only a week long, so I really don't expect to have to put more candidates in there soon.

Leading edge now past 5.1M.

>pfgw.exe -d -od -q"len(27*2^5107424-1)" -f0 len(27*2^5107424-1): 1537490

A prime find at this level (1,537,490 decimal digits) would take 39th place in the top 5000.

With n>=5.13M a prime find would take 38th place.
You would need n>=5.46M to take 37th place.

User zunewantan has found 1 prime

Congratulations to zunewantan!
Prime is currently hidden while it is being reported to the Top 5000 Primelist.
Looks like it's the +1 variety. About time we found one of those.

That is great. Hopefully it will divide some generalized Fermat numbers. /JeppeSN

We're now confirming it on LLR, confirming it again on PFGW and looking for generalized Fermat factors with PFGW. The last one will take the longest. Once those are done and it's reported to Top5K, the prime will be revealed. And of course, since this is a megaprime, there will be a formal announcement.

27*2^5213635+1 is a Factor of xGF(5213603,0,8)!!!!

I do not understand. The first xGF is interpreted as 7^(2^5213634)+6^(2^5213634) which could be meaningful, but the second one I see as 0^(2^5213603)+8^(2^5213603) which makes no sense at all. (That number has no odd divisors, being a power of two.) Someone enlighten me: What does that notation mean? /JeppeSN

It's official:

38a 27*2^5213635+1 1569462 L3760 2015 Divides xGF(5213634,7,6)!!!! xGF(5213603,0,8)!!!!

zunewantan has taken 38th place in the all time prime list!

The letters after the rank refer to when the prime was submitted. 'a' is this month, 'b' last month...

See my question from yesterday above. What is xGF(m,0,8) when one of the "bases" is 0?

Stats are final. Congratulation to zunewantan and Aggie_The_Pew.
The top of the challenge rankings is as follows:

rank userid score 1 zunewantan 147,366,716 2 unconnected 92,552,924 3 Ross* 82,861,765 4 Scott_Brown 42,577,516 5 composite 37,971,509 rank teamid score 1 Aggie_The_Pew 232,702,064 2 Sicituradastra. 119,223,650 3 Russia 108,892,315

One prime was found during the challenge and the 27 leading edge went from n~=5.0M to 5.4M, that's an increase of 8% over where it was at the start of the challenge. Compare that to the December challenge where we moved the 27&121 leading edges forward only 1% each, so we've done 4 times as much work!

Congratulations to everyone who participated.

See my question from yesterday above. What is xGF(m,0,8) when one of the "bases" is 0?

/JeppeSN

Define xGF(n,a,b) = a^2^n + b^2^n
=> xGF(5213634,7,6) = 7^2^5213634 + 6^2^5213634
=> xGF(5213603,0,8) = 0^2^5213603 + 8^2^5213603
zero to any power is 0
=> xGF(5213603,0,8) = 8^2^5213603

I don't know what it means when a=0. I've posted on mersenneforum:

Have a read of Batalov's answer:
http://www.mersenneforum.org/showpost.php?p=397718&postcount=120

However it is more likely that whoever ran the program ran into a bug (or a hardware error), because such large n-m difference are vanishingly rare: 5213635 >> 5213603. Someone has to re-run this with -a1 (e.g. like "pfgw -a1 -gos8 num" and "pfgw -a1 -gos2 num").

Any volunteers?
pfgw:
-a<number> Authenticates composites. Using a -a0 will PRP test using the "normal" FFT sizes. A switch of -a1 will test using 1 less bit per FFT limb. This will take more time but will also eliminate any chance of rounding errors inherant with FFT multiplies. The lower 62 bits of the results of a PRP test will be listed (on composites only). This allows checking for math library errors. If a run on the same numbers using -a0 and a -a1 results in different residues, then there were round off errors.

Fermat numbers, Fm = 2^(2^m) + 1
generalised Fermat numbers, Fm(a,b) = a^(2^m) + b^(2^m)

So I agree with xGF(n,a,1) == GF(n,a)
but xGF(n,a,0) != GF(n,a)

And it was run with both -a0 (the default) and -a2. Same result both times.

This then points to a bug in the code doesn't it?

OK, so we use here the following notations:

xGF(m, a, b) = a^(2^m) + b^(2^m) (with a>b) GF(m, b) = xGF(m, b, 1) = b^(2^m) + 1 F(m) = GF(m, 2) = xGF(m, 2, 1) = 2^(2^m) + 1

Writing GF(m, 8) as xGF(m, 0, 8) is wrong. It would be xGF(m, 8, 1). It is incorrect that zero to a positive power is one! Zero to a positive power is zero, 0^t = 0 for nonzero t.

If the notation xGF(m, 0, 8) came out of the pfgw program, that software has a bug.

And xGF(5213603, 0, 8) is in no way whatsoever the same as GF(5213633, 8). The values of m differ by 10.

The entry at the prime top 5000 needs to be corrected.

My remark on cubes apply to the cube 8 as well. We have:

GF(m, 8) = GF(m, 2^3) = (2^3)^(2^m) + 1 = (2^(2^m))^3 + 1 = (2^(2^m) + 1)*((2^(2^m))^2 - 2^(2^m) + 1) = F(m)*(2^(2^(m+1)) - 2^(2^m) + 1)

Therefore any GF(m, 8) has an "algebraic" factorization and is composite. F(m) is its divisor. It is still interesting to find divisors of the cofactor. And it seems we have one here.

PrimeGrid has made official announcements on GF(m, 8) before, and the page Factors of generalized Fermat numbers also lists factors of these numbers, xGF(m, 8, 1).

Writing GF(m, 8) as xGF(m, 0, 8) is wrong. It would be xGF(m, 8, 1). It is incorrect that zero to a positive power is one! Zero to a positive power is zero, 0^t = 0 for nonzero t.

Of course.

If the notation xGF(m, 0, 8) came out of the pfgw program, that software has a bug.

I was already thinking that, which is why I was re-rerunning those tests without AVX (there's that LLR/PFGW issue that's been under discussion on Mersenne since January.)

The entry at the prime top 5000 needs to be corrected.

Indeed, that's why I started rerunning the tests. We should wait until my -a2 test finishes before changing anything. We want to be sure we're right before making any changes. It will take a few days.
