Hello !

Very sorry for this stupid question, but maybe thinks have changed with PPS Sieve ... or not.

I am currently running PPS Sieve on a GTX660Ti, 2 UT at the same time, in about 1150 seconds. (on another account)

On this account, I replaced my 2 * GTX770 with 2 * GTX780Ti GV-N78TWF3-3GD.

The "old" 770 were ruuning 2 PPS Sieve in about 900 seconds.

The 2 * 780Ti need 1200 seconds to do the same job.

I increased the CPU allocation to 0.5

<app>
<name>pps_sr2sieve</name>
<gpu_versions>
<gpu_usage>0.5</gpu_usage>
<cpu_usage>0.50</cpu_usage>
</gpu_versions>
</app>

but it looks like nothing changed, WU's still take about 20 mins.

Can someone please tell me what's wrong ?

If I am right, it should not take more than 600 seconds ... ?

EDIT : temp is about 76/77 ° : is this normal ? (used to be 62/65° with the 770's)

Thank You Very Much

Best Regards

Philippe

Not having run in awhile but was just wondering if you'd overclocked your "old" 770's and not the 780. The other question would be what is the time for just a single unit on each and is there a big difference there?

I will try 1 WU/card later today

But no, the 770 were not OC ...

Will also reinstall the drivers, maybe something went wrong.

The actual performances of the 780Ti are the same as a 660Ti.

Made a test on GPUGRID, but I got only errors.

Will reinstall and post if it continues to be so slow.

Thank You ! :)

Based on the data from the "Fastest GPUs" page I'd say you do have something out of whack since the 780ti is listed as very high.

I have a 660ti and a 770 and I can promise the 660ti doesn't perform as well as the 770.

Hope you get it resolved soon.

Cheers Rick

There's probably little or no advantage to running more than one WU per GPU on either PPS-Sieve or GFN. Definitely not on GFN, and I would expect any throughput increase on PPS-Sieve to be minimal, at best.

Ya my 780s finish PPS sieve in 8-10min
my 770 is about the same
650Tis in 18-20min.
Only ever done 1 WU per GPU

Your 780Tis should definitely be faster. Anything else different? motherboard? ram? or all been same computer?
Sometimes different CPU tasks that are running slow down my sieves a bit. Hyperthreading off on CPU sped my GPU sieves up by 20%.

76-77C is fine. Possibly it is getting throttled though. And they are power hogs.

Something is bottle-necking.

Hi Michael,

Thank you for your message.

The reason I am running 2 WU's / GPU : with the 770 at least : running 1 WU only causes a
very strong sinusoidal use of the GPU. Running 2 of them was really ideal, with almost no fluctuation in the GPU use.

And I see in the stats that many crunchers do the same.

I think I need to repair or reinstall W7 :/

Thank you all for your messages :)

Best,

Will see outcome.

Best,

Another option is to disable the app file for a few hours and see if that makes any difference?

What I don't understand is why these 780Ti have performances which I think are very bad on PPS Sieve.

I'll have to test it on GPUGRID later.

Compared to my 770 and 660Ti, I am very disappointed.

1 WU in 490 seconds while the 770 crunched 2 in 900 seconds, and the 660Ti crunches 2 in less than 1200 seconds.

Of course, there is maybe a mistake somewhere, but I do not know where or what setting I should change in the nVidia settings etc.

If anyone has a tip, I'm interested.

Thank You

The way nvidia messes with double precision on their cards I wouldn't be surprised if they have intentionally gimped it :(

My 780 doesn't have any double precision settings in the nvidia control panel, but the to may - it can't hurt to look.

Good luck!

How comes that on PPS Sieve, the "performance increase" between GTX780Ti and GTX770 is 0 (even negative) while it is > 30 % on GPUGRID (ie) ?

There is something I don't understand, but I am not an Hardware / BOINC specialist.

Why is it possible to run 2 * PPS Sieve on a GTX770 in about 900 seconds,
while it takes 500 seconds to run a single WU on a 780Ti ... ?

It remains a mistery to me ...

If you have an explanation, I would be happy to read it.

Thank You.

While it is also a mystery to me (on paper the GTX 780 Ti should be significantly faster than the GTX 770), here are some ideas that might begin to explain the difference (probably when taken all together rather than any one alone):

1) The GTX 770 stock core/shader clocks are considerably higher than for the GTX 780 Ti. Thus, while the 780 Ti has more shaders than the 770, the performance increase should be significantly hampered given the clock differential (though the 780 Ti should still be much faster even accounting for this).

2) Even though both cards are Kepler, the GTX 770 uses the GK104 chip whereas the GTX 780 Ti uses the GK110 chip. This could create some substantial performance differences for various reasons including:

a) better driver support (the GK104 is also used in the GTX 680, etc., and by being around longer has had more time to fine tune drivers).

b) new additional features in GK110 that might not interact as well with the PPS sieve application (e.g., "Dynamic Parallelism").

3) Different heat and/or power signatures. Do the 780 Ti cards run hotter than the pair of 770s? They certainly draw more power (about 40-50W more under maximum load). If you were relatively close on the PS threshold, then the 780 Ti combo might be throttling due to either/both heat and/or load.

EDIT: I reread and saw that heat is higher from your first post.

Hi Scott,

Thank you for your message.

Together with the 2 * 780ti, I bought a new CORSAIR RM1000 PSU ;)

Concerning the temperature, it is better now.

Window open, as during the night the outside temp does not exceed 4° to 5 ° C

=> cards are now running at about 65° C

I really thought these cards would be fantastic (compared to 770) on PPS Sieve, but not at all finally.

=> If I keep them, I'll use them on GPUGRID after our RAID, as the "performance increase" is really impressive, and buy 770's or 970's for PPS Sieve / PRPNet.

Thank You !

Best Regards

Some folks over at gpugrid are also having troubles with the 780 cards:

DP performance has no affect on PPS-Sieve.

D'oh - I knew that. Or should have known that.

After reading the Anandtech reivew of the GTX 980, other than the lackluster DP performance shown in their Foliding @Home double precision benchmark, the other thing that stuck out at me were continual comments and discussions around reduced memory bandwidth with the new Maxwell GPUs. Are the seive GPU programs memory sensitive similar to how you found huge LLR performance gains with faster RAM with your new Haswell machine? Could be another significant con for us with nVidia's latest cards.

I am also running 2 780ti's it takes between 7:29 and 8:30 to run them. On the 2 770's it takes about 9:06 each. I am getting faster results, by a lot since I disabled the hyperthreading.

Hyperthreading should always be turned off for LLR projects, regardless if you are running your GPU tasks at the same time. As Mike has mentioned many times, Hyperthreading can be advantageous while running CPU Sieve tasks. BUT, running CPU Sieve tasks with Hyperthreading on will slow down your GPU Sieve tasks a bit. Best practice is to leave Hyperthreading off permanently, unless you stop using your GPU, in that case keep Hyperthreading on for CPU Sieves.
