I would encourage those participants hungry for VERY large primes to prepare for PRPNet GFN524288.
We are now ~826k, we were ~812k just 3 weeks ago and we can hit GPU b limit in just 3 weeks (~840k).
A prime found there would be a nice one and powerfull CPU will be the way to go soon.

This was true for Version 3.1.2 of geneferocl but with Version 3.2.1 its more like ~895k.
See here for where I tested the b limits on my HD7970 GPU.

I am finding the average WU at 825k getting err=0.375 and I haven't yet seen anything over err=0.4063.
Its going to take 15 weeks at the rate you've quoted to get to ~895k. Even then there'll be a range where some tasks will work, others will require CPU.

If we're going to move GFN524288 to BOINC then PRPNet should only be loaded up to 900k.
Of course this is only based on one b limit test on my GPU, so I'd like to hear what other people are getting.

Thanks, I must have missed that (or forgot).
Guess we shold update Genefer "B" limits thread.

I'm getting (obviously) the same err on HD7950.

This is from R280X

Estimated time remaining for 826584^524288+1 is 1:17:58
826584^524288+1 is a probable composite. (RES=0466e38b73a457d4) (3102363 digits)
(err = 0.3906) (time = 1:16:49)

EDIT: This one seems to be exception, others from output shows 0.375

Also see my post here.

I assume err value might be different per different GPU and driver version.

The b limits seem to vary a bit more with the newer app I think. On my Kepler cards (GTX 645 and GTX 660), I get a b limit of ~915k. My err is running lower at .37 to .40 right now.

I've been recording the value of maxErr for b values from 800k to 831k so far, just a bunch at a time, not all of them. Putting them on a graph shows the maxErr going up linearly on average but with a distribution above and below the average. There is small chance of high deviation away from the average. The values of maxErr also seem to be discrete values, no doubt a result of the floating point architecture of the GPU. Image of the graph below:

Point is there is a small chance of very high maxErr. We're still a long way from 0.45, although its possible we could start to see a few reaching that level. Once a WU maxErr goes above 0.45 doesn't matter how many times you retest, it should always have the same result. Its a function of the architecture of the GPU and the maxErr is deterministic for each WU.

Thanks Roger, nice graph.

Expecting Scott to have similar maxErr values on his nVidia GPUs.

I was curious if it wasn't HW glich (having over 30C ambient temperature for my HD7950 but stable 22C for R280X in AC room).

Once a WU maxErr goes above 0.45 doesn't matter how many times you retest, it should always have the same result. Its a function of the architecture of the GPU and the maxErr is deterministic for each WU.

I would think so. But here's an interesting coincidence. These two BOINC GFN WR failed tasks (running 3.2.1-0 with different WU), when run manually on the command line, completed successfully with their residues matching the completed tasks on their respective WU.

Am I just having 100% bad luck with BOINC? Two WU is too small a sample from which to draw conclusions, but it's giving me suspicions. These things take time to run twice, so it will be a while before I have a larger sample.

I'd say they errored out rather than finding limitation of the architecture. GFN WR should have very low maxErr at this b.
One of those WUs completed and the credited tasks got different maxErr because they were running different algorithims:
(err = 0.0019) OpenCL GeForce GTX 770
(err = 0.0017) CUDA GeForce GTX 760

This one was above 0.4063 but below 0.45, ie. highest below maxerr.

838738^524288+1 is a probable composite. (RES=df050904c727e967) (3105687 digits) (err = 0.4219) (time = 1:26:18)

With over 1000 tests done in 820k>b>838k territory, just single test hit maxerr so far.

For my last 28 tests in range 866k>b>861k:
* Average maxerr 0.4024
* Minimum maxerr 0.375
* Maximum maxerr 0.4219

Moving to geneferocl version 3.2.5 helped maxerr but still expecting to finish at ~905k in January 2015.
I plan on stopping GPU testing on n=19 when I can process n=20 WUs quicker.
n=20 WUs take about 4.5 times longer than n=19 so I'll stop when success:failure rate = 1:3.5
I haven't seen any WUs fail due to maxerr yet.

Another valid approach would be to compare GPU to CPU times to determine when to switch over.
Is dependant on what hardware you running of course.

I'm am still getting a bit better than your numbers. Running anywhere from 0.38 to 0.41 on my hardware with current work. Maxerr is expected to hit a limit ~915k for me. I'll run until I get regular errors then switch all my GPUs over to n=20.

Hi
full steam ahead to the GPU b Limit :)

I am on board!

Just broke a billion on the PRPnet credit for this GFN port, too! :)

Just had my first maxerr on a GTX 645 (at b=902k). It is still getting most of them done, but maxerr is commonly in the .43 to .44 range.

Given our current pace, I think we will be beyond the b limit of most GPUs in a few days. Better get'em while they're hot!

yes, and for those of you who want to take those last GPU WU.
Then you should have at least geneferocl Version 3.2.5

If I could ask, that the time allowed to complete be increased on this?

If my gpu can complete it, the task gets done in a few hours.

But if it drops to CPU, it takes a little over a week and then the work becomes redundant.

Might I ask what kind of computer you're using? I'm looking in the database at only those tests that were done on a CPU, and most of them are running in about half a day. My computer is estimating 7 hours on the CPU (and under 2 hours on the GPU). A week seems really, really slow. Slow enough that I'm wondering if something isn't working correctly.

Are you leaving a core open on your computer for this, or is Genefer sharing a core with other crunching if it runs on the CPU?

I'm using the g2.2xlarge nodes on Amazon's EC2.

I'm winding down. I did have a number of them, but since they started to all error out to cpu now, I've dropped them all off.

But I have 1x VM remaining, with 3x instances running. The VM is effectively 4x cores (x2 for hyperthreading). Total of 8 cores as seen by the OS.

Even only 3x cores are used, I left it over night and it's still going (at a rate roughly 1/wk).

Wait -- why is it running PFGW instead of genefer64? I think that's your problem. Do you have genefer64 configured in prpclient.ini? Genefer should be a lot faster than pfgw. Genefer64, using the default transform (i.e., not even using SSE2, let alone AVX or FMA3) can do that number in 30 hours on my machine, and even using the glacially slow x87 transform it still takes only a bit over 3 days.

Also, you should take PFGW out of the config for GFN. If you're lucky enough to find a PRP, PRPNet will automatically invoke PFGW to run the primality test after the Genefer test -- and it's ridiculously slow and you'll certainly miss the deadline. Better to let PRPClient just report the PRP and we'll run the deterministic primality test on much faster computers.

It's now:

geneferexe=./geneferocl //geneferexe=./genefercuda geneferexe=./genefer

Lets see how it goes. In the linux 5.3.1 distribution it didn't have genefer64.

No genefer64? I suppose if the whole package is "linux 64" then all the executables should be 64 bit.

Also, if there's a "geneferexe=./pfgw64" line in there, it should be commented out.

Correct, I only added the 64 extension to the filename where needed. Everything in the Linux 64 package is a 64 bit binary.

Iain, why would pfgw have been running if it wasn't included in "geneferexe="?

Does he need to comment out "pfgwexe=pfgw64.exe" too?

I had a dig at the code, and it seems that if no geneferexe is defined, or one is but it fails to complete the test (in this case because geneferocl is selected and presumably no OCL device is available), then prpclient will look for another program capable of completing the test - first PFGW (if it is defined in the .ini file), then LLR, and finally Phrot if all else fails.

So in the end, the solution is just to uncomment the correct version of genefer.

I think you still should comment out the PFGW line so that prpclient doesn't run PFGW to prove primality if you're lucky enough to find a prime. If it does that, you'll likely miss the deadline, the server will send the number to someone else, and they'll get credit for the discovery instead of you.

In fact, IMHO it would be worthwhile to remove that functionality from PRPNet, or at least make it configurable from the server side. We definitely do not want that behavior for this port, although it's conceivable it could be desirable for other ports.
