You don't have to spend megabucks on the latest hardware. You could put a little effort into manual tuning and make better use of what you have.

I would hardly say that owning 5 PCs puts one in a lower economic class. On the other hand, paying the power bills for 5 older PCs could literally have that effect!

Your PC's power supply may have gone kaput. Lower quality polarized capacitors degrade with age, altering the power output. That would be a coup-de-grace for old energy hogs. Old systems are adequate for normal activities like web browsing, where performance hardly matters because the CPU is mosly idle. But their relatively low energy efficiency shows on intense computational tasks like testing for prime numbers.

If you have electric heat, BOINC-assisted space heating during the winter is economical because the energy trade-off is one for one with the normal heating. But turn off those computers when air conditioning starts being used. The science can wait if you are BOINCing for prime numbers. BOINCing for cures to diseases is another story.

Non, I don't know how much you pay for electricity, but I pay CAD 0.007183 (CHF 0.00574) per kWh. http://www.hydro.mb.ca/regulatory_affairs/energy_rates/electricity/current_rates.shtml This is probably the cheapest power rate in the western world, and yet it still amounts to about $160 for half a year of computing on a 4-years old system with a new $250 graphics card. This for me offsets $50 of seasonal space heating (a ground-source heat pump with a coefficient of performance of 3 to 3.5) - so my net annual power cost for scientific computing is about $110. At your power rates, you would probably save money by displacing all your old computers with a new one thats outperforms them by a large margin.

Je donne déjà plus que les riches qui peuvent dépenser pour des nouvelles "bêtes" (de machines)...

From http://www.swisselectric.ch/en/home.html I guess that you pay about CHF 0.50 per kwh and that your 4 systems together cost you CHF 0.40 per hour to run. Running them continuously would cost you about CHF 3504 per year. I'm sure you could buy a much faster and more power-efficient system for a small fraction of this amount.

The questions you need to ask yourself are:

How long will you have wait with your computers turned off to save enough cash to buy one of these new beasts? Would it be 2 to 4 months?

How long will it take for the new computer to make up for the computation that was avoided by not running the old systems? 2 months? 2 weeks? It depends on what you have now.

These new WU's are fantastic ! Thank You Michael

@composite
: the discussion is not about electricity cost only.
I understand the cruncher who "complained".
I have a few pc's running 24/7 on BOINC.
But only 1 that can support these new AVX2/FMA3 WU's, thanks to an AIO WC, HT OFF.

=> I believe this cruncher was expecting to have the choice between SSE2/SSE3/AVX, etc

Don't forget that BOINC is designed to "Use the idle time on your computer"

Not all participants are proactive crunchers.

Personally, I really appreciate PrimeGrid's team proactivity and reactivity + the fact they always do their best in order to maximize the optimal use of our crunchboxes.

One should not forget that there are also many participants which objectives is to crunch without building dedicated crunchboxes.

NB : Electricity here = 1 € / W / Year = VERY EXPENSIVE

Bref, I wish wou all a nice Shakespeare's Birthday Challenge

I think Boinc is for anyone who wants to feel like they are helping others but either can't or don't want to do actual field work to do it. It lets each of us give as much, or as little, help as we can or would like too and not feel guilty about doing it. If we only crunch one unit per month, it is still one more unit that day then would be done without our help. If on the other hand we crunch a thousand units a day, it is a thousand units that would not otherwise be crunched in that same time frame. We should NOT feel guilty about how much OR how little we contribute, each of us in a different stage of our lives and have different cash flow situations. NO ONE though, in my opinion, should feel like they need to contribute more then then can safely do so for their own situation.
