For the fifth time, SETI.Germany invites all BOINC teams to the BOINC Pentathlon, a competition inspired by the Pentathlon in ancient Greece. Between May 5 and May 19, five disciplines at five different BOINC projects are held to find the overall winner.

Each team that wants to participate has to sign up using the registration form at http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/anmeldung.php. Registration is open until April 27.

For all but the Marathon discipline, the teams may suggest their favorite project when signing up. A list of possible projects is available at http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/25_en_Disciplines.html, you may suggest other projects as long as you think they are able to handle the increased load. Note that projects that were part of last year's Pentathlon are excluded for this year.

For more information including the full rules, please visit the BOINC Pentathlon page at http://www.seti-germany.de/boinc_pentathlon/22_en_Welcome.html.

Please spread the word and gauge the interest within your team. Looking forward to seeing you at the Pentathlon! :)

Do I read the rules correctly in that only granted credit, not pending, at the end of the Pentathlon (or a discipline) counts for overall scoring? So theoretically, one could run a ton of work across the projects and yet get a zero Pentathlon score if one gets stuck with very bad wingmen? I'm not saying that's unfair, because everyone is in the same boat, but it does seem less than satisfying. I imagine that the scoring application only has access to granted credit, so that's probably the best that can be done, I guess.

You're completely right. Unfortunately, there's no fancy way to get a team's pending credit with just the standard XML exports or WebRPC mechanisms. PrimeGrid might be able to provide that data with its challenge scripts, but I'm not aware of any other project that has such a well-developed system.

That's the reason why many participating teams tend to vote for quorum 1 projects. While we still pushed the validators of such projects to their limits in the past, the influence of pendings is minimized.

For projects with a higher quorum, it's a bit of luck whether a certain WU is validated in time, but it's also a bit of tactics (the earlier a WU is downloaded, the more likely the wingman returns it in time) and the granted credit will still be closely related to the computing power (the more you crunch, the more will get validated).

PrimeGrid might be able to provide that data with its challenge scripts, but I'm not aware of any other project that has such a well-developed system.

PrimeGrid has been running challenges for many years, we run a lot of them, and we've put a lot of effort into making them fair and fun. It hasn't been easy.

The only reason we can do reliable pending credit -- and can use that for challenges -- is because we've completely abandoned the standard BOINC credit mechanism. The normal mechanism uses the CPU time from all the valid results to compute the credit, so the pending credit simply isn't known until the results are in. The pending credit you see on your pending credit page is the credit you would get if your task was the only task being returned, and isn't necessarily the actual credit.

Our LLR projects used to use the standard BOINC credit formula, and when that was done we used something other than credit (i.e., "prime score") for challenges.

BOINC wasn't designed for challenges. That's not a criticism of BOINC, but merely a statement of fact. We've put an awful lot of effort fitting the round challenge peg into the square BOINC hole. It would be surprising if other projects did anything similar. Don't forget that challenges are afterthougts for projects.

That being said, probably the best sub-projects here for the pentathalon would be PPSE on the CPU and PPS-Sieve on GPU. You generally get very fast validation on those.

(This applies to any BOINC project, not just PrimeGrid) In theory you could try to micro-manage your tasks if running longer projects by killing any tasks for which there isn't already a result waiting to be validated. That way, you'll get credit as soon as you return the result. The BIG problem with this is that you may well find yourself getting "no work" messages from the server. Without going into detail, in some circumstances, if you've aborted a lot of tasks in one subproject the server may have trouble finding tasks that you're still eligible to run. This isn't punitive action by the server. Rather, if there's relatively few of those tasks in memory for the server's scheduler to send out, it's possible that you might already have returned an (aborted) result on all of them, so the server has nothing to send to you. This is more likely where there's lots of subprojects (like PrimeGrid has) and you're trying to run a sub-project that does relatively few tasks (e.g., SoB or GFN-WR.)

Anyway, good luck to everyone and have fun!

Obviously there are major problems with this on account of AtP not being in first place and there being no cow to BBQ. Despite that I do commend the writing skills of whoever drafted this report: http://www.seti-germany.de/wiki/Pentathlon_-_Daily_Bulletin_of_Events . In my view it is very well done and I have picked up a few tips from it.

Great work!
