I'm looking to upgrade my 5870's to something more powerful and hopefully more energy efficient. Is the 270X strong enough to replace 2 5870's crunching in 1 computer ? Or do I need to jump to the 280X.

BTW this question isn't specific to this project. It's for any project that supports ATI/AMD video cards.

I'm looking to upgrade my 5870's to something more powerful and hopefully more energy efficient. Is the 270X strong enough to replace 2 5870's crunching in 1 computer ? Or do I need to jump to the 280X.

A 5870 has 1600 'shaders' on it, while a 270x has 1280 and a 280x has 2048. The more shaders the faster the card can crunch. After that it is up to the speed and the R series is generally a little bit faster then the cards they are replacing, we are talking a few hundred mhz though, NOT huge amounts. All that being said replacing 2 5870's with a single 270x will probably make your rac go down, and even replacing the 2 5870's with a single 280x is iffy as 2 5870's means a total 3200 shaders, whereas the 280x only has 2048 shaders.

Now a single 280x has 3gb of ram on it whereas the 5870's only have 1gb of ram on them. That means you could run 2 units at once on a 280x thereby easily surpassing the 5870's with no problem. This would be a trial and error thing though and would NOT work at every project.

The 270x seems to have 2gb of ram on them, I was checking newegg.com and some mention 2gb and some don't, I even found one with 4gb of ram on it.

Remember too that the new R series of cards, which the 270, 280 and 290 series is, all have open-cl removed so they need special software, the APP stuff, to run at some projects. Apparently the R series is great for gaming, I am not a gamer so can't give firsthand experiences though, and they can be made to crunch just fine. Just don't expect huge jumps in power and speed from them when going from a good old card like the 5870 though. Now I went from a 5870 to a 7970 and it was a jump in power and speed.

I have several 5870's crunching here and a couple of 7970's too, the 5870 is doing a unit in: 2,067.84 1,207.47 3,371.00 PPS (Sieve) v1.39 (atiPPSsieve)

while my 7970 is doing them in: 1,648.87 445.34 3,371.00 PPS (Sieve) v1.39 (atiPPSsieve)

If you check out the top computers the R series cards are not even on the list until you get into the 70's and they are not doing the same units I am. But when I check our your own pc's I see that your 760 is doing the same units in:
623.38 98.09 3,371.00 PPS (Sieve) v1.39 (cudaPPSsieve)

So MUCH faster and the same credits! In short going to another 760 could be better then staying with AMD. A 760 has 1152 'CUDA Cores', but those are NOT directly comparable to the AMD 'shaders'!! The costs for a 760 are in between the 270x and the 280x on newegg.

I own a 270x and to be fair was rather disappointed in it. Especially on DP projects like milkyway where it's DP performance is crippled to 1/16 th ie. nvidia performance. In reality the 270x is little more than a 7870 with better power usage and crippled DP performance.
1 270x will not replace your 2 5870's though it will reduce your electricity bill.
A 7970 will replace them with some to spare though as they are still awesome cards for the cash.
On paper the 280x looks the best of the R series cards with a more balanced SP / DP performance across various projects. I can't comment for sure but I doubt 1 280x would cover the 2 5870's either, and since it is a price jump over the 270X you would probably be better with a 7970.
Personally for crunching I think the R series cards have lost there way over nVidia with too much emphasis on gaming, but again that is their main market anyway, so makes sense from a commercial stand point.
