Hi all

to take up Gary's post

I know it is early to start discussing 2014 challenges, but since the subject came up...

to plan next year I ask for interests, dates and projects for a 2014 PRPNet Challenge Series
not this year 01 - January - ESP - north star challenge not this year 02 - 01-28 February - all Top5000 prime projects - Tour de Primes - whole month (internal note to admins: check your old mails because of public discussion of new rules) 03 - ??-?? March - MEGA - spring cleaning (until port is empty) 04a- ??-?? April - Wall-Sun-Sun - "The Sun is Hidden" or "The Dark Side of the Moon" or "Pink Challenge" - (04/15/2014 total eclipse) 04b- 23 April - ??? - (shake'the'beer 450th birthday) 05 - ??-?? May - GCW - "Grand Cleanup Walk" 06 - 13-22 June - GFN262144 - "Bach Festival challenge" 07 - July 08 - August 09 - ??-?? September - Wieferich - "Places around the wwwworld: Walking 'On the Wieferich'" 10 - ??-?? October - Wall-Sun-Sun - "The Sun is Hidden" or "The Dark Side of the Moon" or "Floyd Challenge" - (10/08/2014 total eclipse) 11 - November 30th - Wall-Sun-Sun - "Another Brick in the Wall-Sun-Sun(PinkFloyd)" 12 - 11-20 December - 27 & 121 combined - "Foundations of Computational Mathematics"

Feel free to make any further suggestion in this thread; I will try to keep first post up to date

Note: Of course we will vote on these plans with the plans to the official PrimeGrid Challenge Series

For subtlety, both the April and October challenges could be eclipse-themed if you call one the "Pink Challenge" and the second the "Floyd Challenge".

The downsides are that not everyone is going to get the reference, and we may come up with better ideas rather than tying up two challenge names with a single (possibly too obscure) theme.

ESP in January would be great.

In another astronomically-themed name, we could run such a challenge beginning or ending on January 8th, and call it the North Star challenge. Why? Comet ISON will appear closely in line to the North Star, Polaris, on that date (at least as is currently stated in Wikipedia). Make it a short challenge so that if Comet ISON is a dud (comets are notoriously unpredictable), we won't have to live with the embarrassment for too long :-)

As a completely unrelated idea, April 23, 2014 is the 450th birthday of William Shakespeare. Methinks that either PG/BOINC or PRPnet should commemorate that with a challenge. I'll let you guys work it out. There's even a "talklikeshakespeare dot org" website.
(p.s. note that this is fairly close to the April 15th lunar eclipse date)

TheDawgz love it.

Additionally, TheDawgz had far too much input into this years horrific challenge names - so unless you all come up with some ...

"Too be" "2b" "b=2".

Most of our LLR tests are "b=2".

"Two be, or not two be; perhaps five be?" for an SR5 challenge?

"To be, or not to be? Not to be" for SR5. (An SR5 challenge is likely to knock off a few more k's, so I'd be in favor of repeating SR5 again next year.)

What's the chance there will be an OpenCL PRPNet GFN? Then I would be for a month long GFN524288 challenge to complete the GPU range at n=19.
Should have a MEGA challenge early in the year. Isn't it going to be retired soon?

What's the chance there will be an OpenCL PRPNet GFN? Then I would be for a month long GFN524288 challenge to complete the GPU range at n=19.
Should have a MEGA challenge early in the year. Isn't it going to be retired soon?

If its going to be retired we should do a "springs cleaning" in march. march 01-xx until its empty.

Yeah, but we could do the challenge on boinc.
(sorry, I created a cross-project thread here I guess...)

I already created a BOINC 2014 challenge topic in number crunching, so just continue the sr5 discussion there. Discussing the PRPNet challenges is still a good idea for this thread.

Found that thing while googling around a bit. Not sure whether that's a good name for a challenge, though. Maybe the coordinates could be included with the challenge name.

"Another Brick in the Wall-Sun-Sun", a 24 hour challenge on that project, on 30 November 2014, to coincide with the 35th anniversary of the release of Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album (30 Nov 1979). Just a thought.

you may see me not as often here, because my time slips through my fingers because of real life ...
I updated post #1 with:
- march: MEGA cleaning; start date because of a parallel planned BOINC challange
- november: proposed WSS challenge (i think let's collect any idea and at the end we will see, what I can do with my time and what challenge you like to do)

any suggestion left?

How about an "April Showers Brings May Flowers" challenge that covers the last few days of April into the first few days of May?

That could be a GFN challenge, since one isn't planned.

IMO I'd think a long gfn challenge in early May, is it possible to have one on multiple ports? I'm thinking all the GFN ports and a few week long challenge would be cool.

Keep in mind we're doing a 15 day dual GFN BOINC challenge in January, and both the n=18 and 19 GFN ports are close to their GPU b limits, so running a GFN challenge might be better on the two smaller ports.

I suggest making the April 23 challenge a short Wieferich challenge.

As for July and August, that could be challenges on the short GFN projects (GFN32768 and GFN65536). Just throwing in some more ideas. As four proposals already have been suggested by me, if you want some other project to receive a challenge instead of these, please DO feel free to say so. (For example, we do not have a challenge on Factorial and Primorial yet, so those are possibilities as well).

The original inspiration for the "North Star" challenge name/date is "overcome by events", since Comet ISON has disintegrated. So I suggest we not run a January challenge, especially since PG/boinc is running two simultaneously during the month on GFN. The ESP project could be substituted for "The Dark Side of the Moon" challenge ending April 15th (07:45 GMT, to coincide with the moment of greatest eclipse). Say, a 3-day challenge starting on the 12th?

I still favor the Nov. 30th WSS "Another Brick in the Wall-Sun-Sun" challenge, for one day. It would be a test of one's PRPnet management skills and network connectivity, if nothing else :-)

The 27/121 challenge will be hard to hold in December as there are two PG/boinc challenges then. How about moving to late October, the "Pumpkin Challenge" ending on Halloween, instead of the proposed WSS challenge? 5 or 8 days, as you see fit.

Just some more thoughts...

I have to admit I didn't think about possible collisions with the Boinc challenges. I now see here that the PPS Sieve challenge is supposed to run from 18-12-2014 until 21-12-2014. I think the challenge should run 8 days, but a new date and name would have to be determined. Moving it to October seems fine. Maybe the Wall-Sun-Sun challenge could be moved to August.

some notes from my side:
- January should be not used for a PRPNet challenge, there are two long PrimeGrid challenges
- February is still under investigation (Tour de Primes without any prime from PRPNet??)
- next date for a challenge will be March ...

what do you think about this; we push four projects in four challenges - each a quarter of the year?
- end of March - MEGA
- early May or June - GCW
- July or September - Wieferich
- end of October / early November Wall-Sun-Sun

Nah, I think we're still working it out in this thread. I think we have agreed though that there won't be any challenge right at the start of the new year, so as to avoid conflict with the January boinc challenge. So, no one is missing the bus yet :-)

If there will be just four PRPNet challenges, what criteria are being applied in selecting the projects those challenges will be running on?

My suggestion if we have four challenges each running a quarter of a year would be to make those challenges cover several similar projects. Something like the following:

    1st quarter - Primorial + Factorial
    2nd quarter - GFN262144 + GFN524288
    3rd quarter - 27 + 121
    4th quarter - Wieferich + Wall-Sun-Sun

So, just to clear this up for me: Is the table in Sysadm's first post still the thing we are discussing or do people wish to have just four longer challenges?

My personal preference would be to stick to the table and have more smaller challenges. Granted, this means the whole calendar will get more crowded with challenges overall (BOINC + PRPNet), but in my opinion the longer the challenges get, the less likely it is people will participate in them. (Though I have to admit that is just a guess on my part. I am not very good in sticking to challenge dates, as I mostly crunch what I think I currently need to crunch (to get a badge or push a particular project a (tiny) bit)).

Also, my understanding is that the PRPNet challenges are an opportunity to highlight a particular project and perhaps get some people to throw some cores at it they would otherwise have on the BOINC projects. Expanding the duration of the challenges to a quarter of a year or something kind of diminishes the 'highlighting' character of these challenges in my opinion.

Okay here is a mathamatically based suggestion in regards of ESP.

E is the 5th letter, S is the 19th letter and P is the 16th letter in the alphabet, so therefor I suggest following (long challenge):

ESP starts in May (5th month) on the 19th day and runs for 16 days - I have no namesuggestion for this challenge

however if we let the ESP challenge start in May (5th month) on the 24th (19+5) day and still runs the challenge for sixteen days, we could name it "Prime shower" in honour of the possible biggest meteor shower in a decade, that begins on saturday may 24th according to this website: http://www.seasky.org/astronomy/astronomy-calendar-current.html

This was meerely a suggestion, but I quess that it could really help extend the testdepth of ESP and it could also honour one of natures greatest wonders.

Take care

There's a few problems, but most could be fixed by shifting the dates around:

I propose the following:
01 - January
02 - Februrary
03 - 01-31 March - MEGA - closing down sale Conflicts with BOINC challenge
04 - 01-30 April - all Top5000 prime projects - Tour de Primes
---> 23 April - Tour de Primes Mountain Stage - (shake'the'beer 450th birthday)
The entire month of February is the Tour de Primes -- that's why no no specific challenges in February on BOINC or PRPNet.
05 - 19 May - 04 June - ESP - "North Star Challenge" Conflicts with the May BOINC challenge
06 - 13-22 June - GFN262144 - "Bach Festival challenge"
07 - July
08 - 08-15 August - GCW - "Grand Cleanup Walk" Conflicts with the August BOINC challenge
09 - 01-30 September - Wieferich - "Places around the wwwworld: Walking 'On the Wieferich'"
10 - 01-31 October - Wall-Sun-Sun - "The Sun is Hidden" or "The Dark Side of the Moon" or "Floyd Challenge" - (10/08/2014 total eclipse) Conflicts with the October BOINC challenge
11 - 08-22 November Factorial & Primorial combinatorial Conflicts with the November BOINC challenge
12 - 11-20 December - 27 & 121 combined - "Foundations of Computational Mathematics" Conflicts with the December BOINC challenge

Since "Tour de Primes" means "all primes found during the month of February", I guess you could say it's 2014-02-01 00:00:00.

That's assuming the TDP happens in February. I haven't heard anything officially about changing that.

two notes from my side:
- remeber our internal discussion last year about the differences between BOINC and PRPNet reporting times (at BOINC the double-checker determines the reporting time)
- PRPNet will not produce a significant number of primes, so there will be only a specific goal with a lucky hit ...

Post here if your interested in competing in the March MEGA challenge. If I get even one positive response I'll start a thread to run the challenge. It's been 789 days since the last prime from the MEGA port. Ones definitely due.

18-30 March - MEGA - closing down sale
Post here if your interested in competing in the March MEGA challenge. If I get even one positive response I'll start a thread to run the challenge. It's been 789 days since the last prime from the MEGA port. Ones definitely due.

I'm in with a few machines at least.

Next challenge is:
08 - 01-08 August - GCW - "Grand Cleanup Walk"
I suggest we start at 12:00 UTC and end at 12:00 UTC.

Generalized Cullen/Woodall Prime Search was originally only for base 13. Now it has extended to several bases.
Its currently searching for Generalized Cullen primes n*b^n + 1 for bases 41, 47, 49 and 53.
More can be found here and here.

Next challenge is:
09 - 01-30 September - Wieferich - "Places around the wwwworld: Walking 'On the Wieferich'"
I suggest we start at 00:00 UTC and end at 23:59:59 UTC, i.e. whole of September.

9.2e18 is the upperbound that the current software can search to.
We're currently at 1.49e17.

Zeta-Flux claims he's searched to 4*10^{17} using BYU Super Computers. He admits to missing upwards of 20% of the near misses.

And given that each work unit is an interval of length 1e11, there are about 90,500,000 work units left. If we had started from 1 (1e0), that would have been 92,000,000 work units.

Just so that no-one thinks we are close to "the end". The upper limit grows almost linearly.

I look forward to the challenge.

Zeta-Flux was using WPSE software developed by Dorais and Klyve. He checked his results against ours and found he was not getting all the near misses. If the same thing happened to us we'd have to retest the range. So while some of the near-finds up to 4*10^{17} have already been found, I wouldn't say we're only running a double check. He didn't find a Wieferich prime or we would have heard about it. We may still find one within this range.

Wall–Sun–Sun primes are named after Donald Dines Wall,Zhi Hong Sun and Zhi Wei Sun; Z. H. Sun and Z. W. Sun showed in 1992 that if the first case of Fermat's last theorem was false for a certain prime p, then p would have to be a Wall–Sun–Sun prime. As a result, prior to Andrew Wiles' proof of Fermat's last theorem, the search for Wall–Sun–Sun primes was also the search for a potential counterexample to this centuries-old conjecture.

So Fermat's last theorem is proven. Does that also prove there are no Wall–Sun–Sun primes?

We have a conflict between BOINC and PRPNet challenges here. I know we cleared this up earlier in the year, but I think I know what happened.

The PRPNet challenge was originally moved out of the way of the BOINC challenge, but then somewhere during the year somebody noticed that the "World Animal Day Challenge" wasn't actually on World Animal Day. Correcting that resulting in moving the BOINC October challenge, and nobody noticed that it now conflicted (again) with the PRPNet challenge. And by "nobody", I of course mean me. Oops.

It's not really a problem if these two overlap; one's a CPU only challenge, and the other is primarily a GPU challenge. You can run WSS on a CPU, but that's sort of like bringing a knife to a gun fight.

It wasn't my intention to overlap a BOINC and a PRPNet challenge. Doing both would drain resources and not allow people to optimise their approach for each challenge.
Still, this is why I am posting in the "2014 PRPNet Challenges - Discussion and Dates" thread first.
Having said all that the WSS challenge is named after the eclipse on the 8th of October and World Animal Day is on the 4th of October.
Maybe a small overlap wouldn't hurt.

Then I propose:
10 - 08-20 October - Wall-Sun-Sun - "The Sun is Hidden" or "The Dark Side of the Moon" or "Floyd Challenge" - (10/08/2014 total eclipse)
I suggest we start at 08:17 UTC (Penumbral Eclipse begins worldwide) and end at 8:17 UTC twelve days later.

No, as was explained by Zhi Wei Sun in this post.

Given that the current WFS challenge (Around the WWWWorld, Walk on the Wieferich etc.) ends on September 30 at 23:59:59, we should definitely not start a WSS challenge on October 01. These two challenges appeal to the same people and hardware.

But October 08 as Roger proposes, could be fine.

Next challenge is:
10 - 01-12 October - Wall-Sun-Sun - "The Sun is Hidden" or "The Dark Side of the Moon" or "Floyd Challenge" - (10/08/2014 total eclipse)

Having said all that the WSS challenge is named after the eclipse on the 8th of October and

The eclipse of October 08 is a lunar eclipse, so the Sun is in no way hidden. (Of course, on parts of the Earth where it is day-time, the Sun will be up, but the eclipse will be out of sight because the Moon (and the Earth shadow) is on the opposite side of Earth; lunar eclipses are visible in all places where it is night when the eclipse takes place.)

There is a solar eclipse later in that month, but it is only partial.

Solar Eclipse is a North American event. Lunar eclipse is world wide (>50% anyway), so more appropriate.

Will be poetic when the WSS challenge "eclipses" resources from the TRP challenge.

I am open to other opinions of course.

WSS uses far less CPU resources than does Wieferich (i.e., it uses less CPU cores). Thus, I don't think it will hamper the TRP challenge too much.

It is cool to use the October lunar eclipse. It takes place October 8 (Wednesday) UTC over the Pacific Ocean, and yes, is visible from over 50% of the Earths surface.

In Europe and Africa, it will not be visible (it will be day during the entire event). Through the Pacific Ocean we have the international date line. When the lunar eclipse is viewed from e.g. Australia or Asia, it takes place the night between Wednesday and Thursday, local time. When viewed from the Americas, it takes place the night between Tuesday and Wednesday.

"The Sun is Hidden" will be an appropriate name for observers standing on the Near Side of the Moon. They will see the Sun go behind the huge Earth disk, and the Earth disk will appear as a red ring, the red light consisting of all sunrises and sunsets of the Earth. Hence, for these obeservers standing on the Near Side of the Moon, the illumination will become very red. (When we on Earth look up on Moon, we see Moon as red, then.)

let me know that 10/08 is consensus

write now or be silent forever :)

Sounds like a good idea. Give those poor GPU's a breather over there.

Cheers Rick

ps - when the WFS port got moved did all the prpnet ports get moved as well?

Yes. All the ports are on one server. We moved the entire server to a bigger box.

The "natural" month (in some sense at least) begins tomorrow morning at 06:14 UTC where there is an astronomical new moon. Half the way through this month, i.e. at full moon, we have the October 8 eclipse. At the conclusion of that month, i.e. at the next new moon, we have the October 23 eclipse.

How long does one work unit in WSS (Wall-Sūn-Sūn) take for a (typical) GPU, compared to one work unit in WFS (Wieferich)? The reason why I ask is that a WSS WU is an interval of length 10 billion (1e10), whereas a WFS WU is an interval of length 100 billion (1e11). Also, the leading edge is not as far in WSS as it is in WFS.

Just ran a test with WUs downloaded now. This is on Linux, with a GTX570, and threads/blocks settings in wwww.ini the same for both. WFS run about 115 seconds wall-clock time, while WSS units are about 40 seconds.

Thank you very much. 115/40 is about 3. So it would appear that users will need to fetch new work three times as often during the WSS challenge, compared to the current WFS challenge.

So we must hope the new hardware on the PRPNet server can cope with a tripling in work to do (also a tripling in internet connections per time).

I suggest we start at 08:17 UTC (Penumbral Eclipse begins worldwide) and end at 8:17 UTC twelve days later.

Espenak's (newest?) predicition has penumbral eclipse starting at P1 = 08:15:33 UTC. Here is his textual description.

Next challenge is:
1-15 November Factorial & Primorial combinatorial
I suggest we start at 18:00 UTC and end at 18:00 UTC.

I note the 5-6 December SGS BOINC challenge clashes with planned 27 & 121 challenge. There is also a 18-21 December PPS-Sieve BOINC challenge.
Suggest we move it (remember Conference runs from 11-20 December) to:
9-16 December - 27 & 121 combined - "Foundations of Computational Mathematics"

We could also squeeze in a GFN524288 Transition Challenge if people are interested.
