I am running PRP client 5.0.4 and while crunching the PPSElow project, a prime was found! My terminal window froze with this message:

Starting Proth prime test of 2623*2^303036+1
2623*2^303036+1 is prime! Time : 92.058 sec.

Do I close the window and restart it? Just wondering...

Just let it be, don't close the window. It should continue on when it's done doing some other tests.
Edit: Oh yeah...congrats on your find.

It is "small" prime, you will find in average 1 or 2 per day ( of course, more tests more primes) :)) But in that project you have most chances to find prime, since you can make a large number of test very fast. More processed WU, more chance to find prime :))

Running PPSElow is the only primes I've found running prpnet, I think. It's invigorating finding a prime no matter what size it is!

I believe it is checking to see if the prime that you found divides a generalized fermat number.
Just let it run.

My terminal window is still open, but has not done anything since yesterday! It seems that it is frozen on the message: 2623*2^303036+1 is prime! Does it usually take this long to process the data? My test_results.log file shows that there was a prime found, but I don't know why my window is locked up...
Here is the copy of the message in my logfile: [2012-01-14 13:02:50 PST] Server: PPSElow, Candidate: 2623*2^303036+1 Program: llr Residue: PRIME Time: 92 seconds

Thoughts....

(edit) Oh, BTW, I initiated a ctrl-c to close the terminal window, but a proper shutdown has not happened yet. This is what is currently on my screen: "^C
Ctrl-C detected, shutting down the program."

Sounds like an infinite loop. Presuming *nix, use ps to find the offending process and kill it. Before doing so, determine if it is using CPU or not. If so, then it is looping, if not, it might be waiting for something.

I had the same problem 3 days before. I found a prime and then the terminal window was frozen with the message "6793*2^302502+1 is prime!".

In the prpclient.log I found this message:

[2012-01-12 08:39:16 CET] PPSElow: 6793*2^302502+1 is prime
[2012-01-12 08:40:21 CET] PPSElow: Could not open file [work_PPSElow.out] for reading. Assuming user stopped with ^C

When the tested numbers are not prime, everything works fine.

Adrian, are you using the 5.0.4 client also when this happens?

I'll investigate. There might be some path in the code that is causing the problem.

Now I found my second PPSElow-prime and I have the same problem again. I can not report the prime-number.

The terminal window is frozen and shows:
"2167*2^303758+1 is prime! Time : 137.950 sec."

test_results.log:
[2012-01-17 17:16:38 CET] Server: PPSElow, Candidate: 8613*2^303756+1 Program: llr Residue: AFB6B1D51B64D2D9 Time: 136 seconds
[2012-01-17 17:18:57 CET] Server: PPSElow, Candidate: 2167*2^303758+1 Program: llr Residue: PRIME Time: 138 seconds

The prpclient.log shows only the last non-prime:
[2012-01-17 17:14:16 CET] PPSElow: Getting work from server prpnet.mine.nu at port 12000
[2012-01-17 17:14:22 CET] PPSElow: PRPNet server is version 4.3.6
[2012-01-17 17:16:38 CET] PPSElow: 8613*2^303756+1 is not prime. Residue AFB6B1D51B64D2D9

Maybe it's a problem only with the macintel-version of the prpclient 5.0.4. I think that Ronald Littelfield has a Mac-computer too.

I hope, somebody can find out, what's causing the problem and fix it.

This appears to be a problem with 32-bit builds of pfgw on MacIntel. I have been able to reproduce the problem and have narrowed down the area where it could be, but haven't found the cause yet. This occurs when doing GFN divisibility testing on a base 2 prime. This does not occur on 32-bit builds of pfgw on Windows and it does not occur on 64-bit builds on MacIntel.

Can anyone on Linux run this test:

./pfgw32 -k -f0 -gxo -q2623*2^303036+1

and let me know if it hangs or completes?

I changed the stopoption into 0 - promt in the master_prpclient and then shut down the program with Ctrl-C. After that the prime-number was accepted!? I have no idea what's happening.

Here is what the Terminal-window shows:

Not working for me :(
Custom kernel 2.6.39.4 (64 bit)

If I test with syntax ./pfgw32 -k -f0 -gxo -q2623*2^303036+1
then got same as user

Don't worry about the format of the output. It clearly isn't writing over a "5" from a previous write to the console. I'll fix that.

What happens if you run this:

./pfgw32 -q2623*2^303036+1

and this:

./pfgw32 -tm -q2623*2^303036+1

I think it was prime since the first post on this thread. Just not a gfn divisor.

I think that Ronald Littlefield has a Mac-computer too.

I hope, somebody can find out, what's causing the problem and fix it.

I'm still investigating the problem. I suspect a miscompile with GMP. Unfortunately GMP 5.0.2 will not build with llvm-gcc, which Apple no longer uses. It does build with clang, installed as part of Xcode 4. I have been able to build GMP, but now I get a different error at runtime. I might need to talk to George about it a the error is showing up in gwnum.

Thanks Mark for taking the time to work this out! I guess I've stumbled onto a "bug" in the program for the Mac, but that's what we're here for ... right? Thanks again!

I've posted pfgw 3.6.1 here: https://sourceforge.net/projects/openpfgw/. This is a Mac only release to address the hanging issue. I suspect a faulty build of GMP. I had been using GMP 5.0.1 which I built with llvm-gcc. Apparently llvm-gcc (which comes with Xcode 3) does not build GMP correctly. I had to upgrade to build GMP (now at 5.0.2) and pfgw with clang (which comes with Xcode 4 IIUC).

Yes it does work! The w/u has processed, but I'm confused on the results message...

The work unit had expired on the server before you returned the result.
