hi
im new to this projekt and i got my GPU running now.

Ati HD 6850
but the temperatures are to high so i would like to reduce the usage of the GPU
lets say to about 50%.

i havent find any possibility to change that.
can anybody say me where to find this settings or if it isnt possible to change that?!

thanks a lot

€: thx yes its a ATI HD6850

regards
Rasmus

Ati HD 6850 i think.

One thing:
This is a good tool to see your GPU details.

I don't think the sensors are accurate, especially as it keeps reporting my fan speed to me when I don't have a GPU fan. It really is a good tool for finding out the basics, though.

I'm not as familiar with ATI cards anymore, so I can't supply much in the way of details.

As far as I know, there are no tools to limit GPU utilization the way you can with the CPU.

However, what you should be able to do is use the overclocking tools for your card to UNDERCLOCK the GPU. Reduce all the clock speeds to their minimum settings. This probably won't get you down to 50%, but it should be enough to significantly drop the temperatures.

While you're at it, set the fan speed to its maximum.

That's as much as I know too, with the addition that it's very hard to underclock ATI/AMD GPUs without flashing the BIOS, or doing something similar which is very risky and putting your hardware in the hands of a 3rd party. The issue is complicated further by the fact that some cards come overclocked in the box, and so might have a different or modified BIOS, which confuses things. ATI cards these days come in more different forms than someone might expect, in that they call a model with DDR3 and GDDR5 the same name. I got confused and took days to work out which one I wanted.

No it is actually kinda easy
Especially on newer models
Get yourself a copy of msi afterburner at http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm
{ before one ask it works on every brand / model ati/nvidia }

When you installed it set it to start with windows
Then you see some bars which to set memory and core speed
To get our cards making less heat no extremes have to be done
Mine runs normally at 850 and memory at 1200
To get it to run withing proper cool settings i just set the core to 700 and i lowered the memory to 750 which gives a huge drop of temps
Remind yourself the output drops as well
But to honest many boinc projects do not need high memory speeds, this is also where i see the biggest drop in temperature (collatz is a project which needs high memory speeds)
Now do not set it below a certain minimum or your system will crash
The lowest at which my card still runs ok is 450 on core and 400 at memory ( effective this is 1600 mhz since its ddr5) some set it at 300 but for me the desktop becomes sluggish which i do not like
Each time when you change something you need to apply
Now if you found the speeds you like best temperature wise you can save it as a default with the numbers down under in my case i have 3 settings as preset
1. performance where i set it to actually run faster 890/1260
2. high core low memory 890/400
3. low temp running 450/400

If you need any help just send me a message
As a sidenote do not mess with voltage and such if you do not know what your doing with this tool

in my CCC (driver panel) i can adjust my clock and memory a little bit.

but even if i drop everything to min it doesnt lower the temp very much. maybe about 8°C

clock (600 - 850)
memory(1000 - 1200)

is there any other way than by adjusting the clock?

like a hidden setting in boinc ?

thx a lot so far

Try Fred Melgert's TThrottle.

If GPU (can also be used for CPU) temperature raises the speed decreases; as temperature goes down the speed is increased again.

Just out of curiosity, what are you seeing your temps at where you feel they are too high? What's the symptom you get that makes it such? Locking? freezing? shutdowns? temperature probe? Noise?

The stock coolers on any decent (and recent) graphics card should be capable of cooling the card to adequate levels if the case is cooled correctly and the room isn't too hot (some more than others of course). If this is not your situation I think you might want to address the case's cooling first if you can. It is typically a lot more beneficial in general than under clocking your GPU and it has benefits for the rest of the computer as a whole (especially your hard drive!). Fans are cheap. Zip ties for unruly cabling is even cheaper still! But nothing beats a machine which is both fast as heck, cool, and quiet too.

Good cooling doesn't have to be loud or terribly expensive in order to be effective either. With some more information on what case you have this equipment in and how many fans it has (and where they are located and which direction they are blowing in) you might be able to fully rectify the situation without reducing your machines performance with nothing more than a couple of well placed fans or just changing the direction they are blowing!

€: thx yes its a ATI HD6850

6850 is a cool card byitself and has a lowish tdp, if its running hot - beyond 80 is hot for 6850 considering its low tdp - then something is wrong here. First thing to do, if gpu cooler is not dusty and airflow in the case is good enough, is to downclock the memory (pg-s pps sieves are not memory bound, so the speed of memory can be decreased a lot w/o impacting wu runtimes significantly. Lowering the shaders/core speed will impact the runtimes hard) , lets say by 4 times (lower), and if that cant get the temp under control, then you need a new cooler for the card. My cards temps here: http://www.upload.ee/image/1741599/netikasti_gpude_temperatuurid_2.jpg
