I'm getting computation error after 3 seconds on every Primegrid task done on my ATI - is this something to be concerned about? The ATI runs other projects ok.

No, be careful if you have an ATI HD4xxx or lower card. OpenCL seems to be discontinued. 11.5 works fine, with 11.6 all wus errored out.

I have a Radeon HD 4850. I'm downloading the latest drivers for it (which say they include OpenCL so it can't be discontinued). It also includes the SDK whatever that is.

Drivers installed. I switched off all other projects and let it grab from primegrid only. Now running 9 tasks (8 CPUs + 1 ATI) without computation errors :-)

Why should OpenCL for the HD4000 series be continued?
IIRC, OpenCL for series HD4000 is only beta. Next point is, this is not a native gpu-language like Stream or Cuda. The HD4000 series has also some historical limitations and OpenCL can not run as fast as it could/should be. I think it is only a question of time when AMD will give up the OpenCL-support for the older gpu-generations.

PS: Normally you need only the APP-driver or the Stream-SDK and not both...

Well actually you should not install the latest driver at all
Since the newest drivers have some weird issues in them
For instance my card started with 400 mhz core speed and memory was set at 300mhz.

For best performance on models pre dating the 6xxx series best is to use either
catalyst 10-10 or 11.5a depending on the results

Many who i know switched back to 10.10 and seems to be error free after that.

Even i am going to try 10.10 with my 5870 since on some projects i still have some weird screen lags, which also seem to be not present with that driver.

You can download them under the previous driver section on the download page at amd

The screen lag is surely down to the massive load on the GPU from crunching, and isn't a bug/issue?

I have an Overclocked HD 6670, and the only time I've had an error in a task is when I've messed about with my system and it's crashed without warning. My fault in that case then, obviously.

My 6670 is stable at 900mhz core, and 1150mhz GDDR5 memory. I've got Catalyst 11.8. There is minor screen lag when scrolling and/or watching flash content in web pages (whilst it's under about 90% load due to crunching, which is my point...), but it's barely noticeable and doesn't really affect normal tasks.

You need to install the latedst driver and the SDK.

I'm using v10.12 w/ocl on all 16 of my ATI cards (HD4770 - HD5870) on various projects and they all run perfectly. I've tried all the newer versions but keep going back to v10.12.

Also: Is there any planning to make ATI/AMD tasks available in the future, apart from PPS Sieve? I wouldn't mind, but my graphics card is fanless and so I only care about the noise, I can leave that crunching 24/7 - but my Intel fan goes mad when I give it CPU tasks. I know NVIDIA/CUDA tasks are faster, but I have time and a modern AMD/ATI card here to crunch a lot of tasks. I bet a lot of others are in the same position.

I do enjoy the CPU LLR tasks too, and thanks to everyone involved. It would just be nice to see some more ATI/AMD optimised tasks, so I could get on with them. Cheers.

Why should OpenCL for the HD4000 series be continued?

I assumed OpenCL was the same for all Radeons, hey I'm not a programmer.

The HD4000 series has also some historical limitations and OpenCL can not run as fast as it could/should be. I think it is only a question of time when AMD will give up the OpenCL-support for the older gpu-generations.

Older? This was a top of the range card a couple of years back, I don't expect to replace it yet! It scores maximum in the Vista experience index, so that's good enough for me!

PS: Normally you need only the APP-driver or the Stream-SDK and not both...

I just did a complete install, assuming AMD knew what they were doing.

Even i am going to try 10.10 with my 5870 since on some projects i still have some weird screen lags, which also seem to be not present with that driver.

You can download them under the previous driver section on the download page at amd

Latest driver is working fine on my 4850.

...my graphics card is fanless and so I only care about the noise, I can leave that crunching 24/7 - but my Intel fan goes mad when I give it CPU tasks.

I thought the days of noisy fans were gone. My Intel Core i7 920 2.66GHz with stock fan makes no audible noise. The fan changes from 950rpm to 1100 rpm when all 8 cores are in full use. CPU core temp goes to 50C.

I know NVIDIA/CUDA tasks are faster

How come? Isn't a CPU more powerful than a GPU? If not Intel are doing something wrong....

I'm not a programmer either, but I thought that tasks optimised for GPUs (or, rather, the combination of the two) were infinitely faster than a task running on a CPU, even if it's got multiple cores. GPUs specialise in FPU calculations as far as I know, and can do many more in parallel.

With the right type of problem to solve, and with a well written application, a top-end GPU can be much, much faster than a top end CPU. While not "infinitely faster" (unless the CPU is turned off; then it would indeed be infinitely faster), some GPU applications run several hundred times faster than their CPU equivalents.

Modern CPUs are incredible engineering marvels in their own right, but today's graphics cards are quite literally "supercomputers on a chip". Their design is essentially a direct descendant of the super-computers of yesteryear such as the Cray-1. You could think of a GPU as a Cray-1, except that it's much larger, much faster, and physically shrunk down to the size of a cigarette carton. The only thing lacking is that a GPU isn't nearly as comfortable when you sit on it.

I tried this, but the GPU refused to run with the CPU in "off" mode.

Comfortable for you or the GPU? Anyway I roll my own, which makes a mess when I sit on it.

I see. I shall check.....

CPU does 2.5 billion floating point operations per core per second. GPU does oh my god..... 1000 billion. 1000>>>>>>2.5 and also greater than 8x2.5=20

50 times more on a GPU than the whole CPU? I'm sure the CPU should do better than this. Aren't flops (good word that) used a lot in general tasks?

Consider that GPUs have up to 3200 cores versus up to 12 for a CPU. If a task can be highly parallelized for the GPU it can be run very quickly.

Make that 3.25 billion, I just overclocked the 2.6GHz CPU to 3.6GHz with the help of a few extra fans :-)

About ati 3xxx/4xxx hardware supported

What i think was meant is that while opencl is developing at some point you get new programs who does not support the older models anymore like cuda
I think both sides are at version 4.x now

Gpugrid for instance needs almost allways the latest and fastest cards, simply because the program makers did make their application for cuda 3.2 or 4.0
Since older cards mainly support cuda 1.x or 2.x they can not finish the jobs in time so they are simply no longer usable on this project.

Any hardware is made for version x.x of these so its up to the application builders if they still support the older versions or not.
As with cpu projects some enhanced instruction sets make a huge impact for calculations others hardly do anything, so in cpu projects you see some difference also.
Look at raistmer's seti enhanced special builds for almost every instruction set from SSE2 up to AVX and more coming each time new processor designs get introduced making sometimes huge speed increases possible.
This will be seen on the upcoming cal/cuda/opencl development as well.
I expect in time we will see the gpu getting more and more very good and advanced calculation devices, which is very good for d.c.

Did you say 3200 cores? That is unfeasible. They must be a lot smaller than CPU cores?!?

lol
they are completely different then cpu cores, gpu cores are simple cores which can do limited tasks, but since they have so many and all can work on this 1 or 2 tasks to complete. Thats why they will do it extremely fast.
cpu is with complex instruction sets and can do many different tasks and is able todo anything you want.
Gpu can do only a few different task since they have simple instruction sets
Also though some projects allows more instances to be running at the same time untill now i think the limit is still maximum 2 real jobs(streams) at one time.
The other difference is that a cpu can stop tasks and start them at any time and does in real time switch between many tasks
Now the gpu is limited in this as well in most cases when it gets started on a job needs to finish it no matter what happens.
In most cases if it get stopped it will have to do some or all of the work done over

I'm getting jobs done form MilkyWay@Home in 3 mins 45 seconds! Not sure on the PrimeGrid ones - BOINC isn't asking for them at the moment, maybe because I have a couple of CPU tasks to complete (40 hours each!)

Also though some projects allows more instances to be running at the same time untill now i think the limit is still maximum 2 real jobs(streams) at one time.

Can you explain this please, I have several projects (including PrimeGrid) which have given me 8 tasks for the CPU at once and they all run simultaneously.

He is talking about the GPU, they normally process one WU at a time, but some projects allow 2 at the time on the GPU.

DOH! [slaps self on head] Didn't read it properly.

In that case - which projects - I've never seen more than one running at a time.

He is talking about the GPU, they normally process one WU at a time, but some projects allow 2 at the time on the GPU.

I think you need an app_info for this but then you can too calculate 3 or more units in parallel.
You need only enough GPU-RAM and "we need more power" inside the GPU...

Not sure if there is any advantage to this. It would clutter the tasks screen and not achieve any more work anyway.

It's an advantage only at MilkyWay AFAIK (and not a huge deal at that).

Back to the original topic, I'm now getting PrimeGrid GPU tasks crashing after 3 seconds again. Odd, as they started working ok since I upgraded the GPU driver.

I note the tasks say (ati13ati) at the end, whereas other projects say (ati14) - does this mean Primegrid is using old software?

You need at least a HD4000-gpu and according to the PPS-sieve preferences:
Proth Prime Search (Sieve)
Supported platforms:
Windows: 32bit, 64bit (+CUDA23, AMD OpenCL *1)
Linux: 32bit, 64bit (+CUDA23, AMD OpenCL *1)
Mac: 32bit, 64bit (+CUDA32)
*1 Requires AMD Accelerated Parallel Processing (APP) drivers. If APP driver not available for your card, then the ATI Stream SDK is needed.

I'm using a Radeon HD 4850 1GB - this should be ok?

I've got the latest driver, and installed the SDK.

I'm getting an "output file absent" error, thus:

Installing both (APP and SDK) can cause problems.
According to the Collatz-thread Cat. 11.7 causing higher calculation times? 11.3 seems to be a faster/better solution. I found too enough posts in the boinc-community with catalyst 10.10 on pre-HD5000 gpu's.

Seen as this driver is used for more than just BOINC, I am not willing to downgrade it to an old one. All the other projects run ok anyway. Only Primegrid has had a problem, which rather points to Primegrid's programming!

Primegrid will have to make do with my CPU for the time being, I've disabled the ATI option in the preferences to avoid loads of useless results going back.

The PPSsieve-app for ATI/AMD-gpu's was coded by the volunteer developer Ken Brazzer (Ken_g6). Without his work, PG had nothing for ATI/AMD-GPUs...
If you have experiences in programming a CAL- or better OpenCL-version, your help is much appreciated.

I'm not a programmer, perhaps you should ask the programmers of Milkyway, Dnetc, Moo, Collatz, and Seti Beta.

Most (if not all) of those projects use CAL rather than OpenCL, unlike PrimeGrid.
Not old but newer (though not necessarily better - yet).

According to the DnetC-thread Cat. 11.7 causing higher calculation times? Catalyst 11.9 seems to fix the whole CPU core usage per GPU.

Anyone know if 11.9 supports OpenCL on HD4xxx or if that is dead and gone forever?

I don't think the hardware on the HD4xxx cards support OpenCL, at least that's what wikipedia hints at:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Radeon_R700_.28HD_4xxx.29_series

...but I know Wiki is often wrong or omits information, and it sounds like people here have had it working at least partially at some stage. Have you got GPU-Z? That should tell you whether your card can do OpenCL. Maybe I'm misunderstanding it and anything can do OpenCL, just not necessarily hardware-accellerated. The AMD changelog for 11.9 doesn't say anything about OpenCL changes.

All HD4xxx cards are OpenCl capable. Whether the driver support for OpenCL is included in a particular release is not guaranteed, however. In the past, OpenCL support for these older cards has always been noted as Beta. I have not seen any documentation on 11.9 yet regarding OpenCL support for the older cards.

Ah; I (and Wikipedia...) stand corrected. The changelogs for new catalyst versions are almost always changes for specific games, this is the changelog for 11.9. Games stuff and some WMV/VLC Media Player corrections, then. I'm using 11.9 and have had no problems, for the record, although that doesn't really help people with 4xxx cards.
