Anyone interested in a PRPNet challenge or a series of challenges?
IIRC, there were two challenges this one, one for 5oB and one for GFN.
5oB has a limited life, i.e. when work runs out the project is complete. PPSElow also has a finite amount of work, but it isn't possible to load all of it into the server at one time. I believe that there at least 13 million tests not loaded into the server, but Lennart would have to verify that. SGS also has a limited lifespan as once a Sophie-Germain prime is found, the project can shut down. I don't know what intentions the admins have for GCW, i.e. whether or not they will not load any other bases or load current bases for n > 500,000.
I wouldn't want challenges to interfere with the other PrimeGrid challenges (I don't care about other BOINC challenges), but I think that some current PrimeGrid BOINC users will run PRPNet during a challenge.
Opinions? |

challenge times are good times :D
in the past many users changed from boinc to PRPNet, some stay after challenge.
Let me know the date; if I am in reach of my servers, I should be able to generate some challenge stats like in former challenges ...

We had one in January near the anniversary of Pierre de Fermat's death. I think that would again next year. I was thinking of a GCW Challenge in the week before the Equinox Challenge. |

+1 yes please.
Challenges that last just a few days, once a month or so, just like PrimeGrid challenges (but obviously not on overlapping days) would be quite an excellent idea. |

I have some ideas for additional challenges in 2012:
"GFN" from January 9-13 (already suggested)
"Beware the Primes of March" from March 12-18, focusing on GCW
"May Day" from May 1-5, focusing on SR5 (5 day challenge running for 5 days for base 5 prime searching) |

These Challenges take time to plan and get the word out well in advance. Please submit more ideas (dates and themes) so the entire year can be established. The 9th is already too close for the first Challenge so we'll need to bump that back at least a week.

I suggest a Wieferich and Wall-Sun-Sun challenge during the *last* 7 days of 2012. That is of course assuming we make it through that Mayan Calendar nonsense.
Hmmm... how about (for either boinc or prpnet) something either beginning or ending on December 21st, just to show we're not afraid? Better adjust for the time zone of Chichen Itza, for maximum effect.

Yeah, sounds like a great plan :D A "the end is nigh!"-challenge. Would there be a project available that nears completion around that date?

Awesome -- we can have an end of the world challenge. Overclock the CPUs and GPUs as far as they'll go, because it won't matter anyway!
We could have a lot of fun with this.

How about "Do You Have Extra Sensory Perception (ESP)" in 'spooky' late October (27 - 31 ?)
or
"Let's Not Labor Over The '121' days Left in 2012" on September 2 for ? days
and
"'27' days left in 2012, Will We Still Be Here? (Myan calender ends Dec. 21)" on December 5 for ? days
Just some wild thoughts

stats are available (if all my cronscripts works, I will not wake up to control it)

It might be advisable that summer challenges involve computations that generate the least heat. We wouldn't want to invite hardware failures on OC'ers or stress the power bill with the cost of extra air conditioning.
It doesn't matter to me though. My cooling system "must run" in the summer to store heat for the winter (ground-source heat pump). And power is cheap and clean too, in parts of Canada where hydro-electricity is dominant. Too cheap - wind power is actually uneconomical. |
