I was just checking the server pending tests, and noticed that
1*2^7744168+40291 is run by "quel".
Strange is that my host "Snowstorm" is also running the same work unit in two different cores. So total of at least three cores are running the same work unit.
"Snowstorm" is a 8-core machine and is running a total of 8 5oB work units, and the other 6 can be seen at the pending tests list.
Is this normal?

Which version of the client are you running?

It appears to me that the server did not get an acknowledgement from your client that it received the workunit, thus that workunit went to another computer. My best guess is that the server timed out waiting for a response from your client.

Since you can't get credit for the work, I suggest that you abandon those workunits.

I would need to see the debug log with debuglevel=2 (both client and server) to know more about what happened.

This log from core 4 implies that the server never received the acknowledgement from the client that it received the workunit, thus it was sent to the next client that connected, your core 2 client.

Did you core 4 client start working on this test? If so, you can abandon it and get another test.

This log from core 4 implies that the server never received the acknowledgement from the client that it received the workunit, thus it was sent to the next client that connected, your core 2 client.

Did you core 4 client start working on this test? If so, you can abandon it and get another test.

Yes it started. Both cores are running the same wu. I will abandon the core 4 test.

Good. The problem is that the client doesn't know that the server didn't get the acknowledgement.

If the prpclient.ini file is untouched then this is within the 3 minute communication error window. So could the core 2 have interrupted the core 4 communication and caused some race condition?

No. Each connection to the server is handled in a different thread. On the client side the key is that each instance of the client is run from a distinct directory and that the clientid in each prpclient.ini file is distinct. If you choose the change the clientid, then you need to make sure that you have no work assigned to that client because the server will verify that the client returning the work is the same one that requested it.

Lumiukko and apparently many other users are using the same clientid (stats page has same user with multiple identical client names). If I understand the uniqueness requirement of the clientid, then the cause is probably using the same clientid in all instances.

Not sure how to correct this but perhaps under Linux the update-script appends a number or unique something to that prpclient.ini or add another field to prpclient.ini to indicate a different instance.

I think that it incorrect to use the same clientid in multiple PRPNet instances (at least within the same host) as indicated by rogue's reply (emphasis added):
On the client side the key is that each instance of the client is run from a distinct directory and that the clientid in each prpclient.ini file is distinct.

and from Lennart's PRPNet post on the settings:
// This value differentiates clients using the same e-mail ID
clientid=computername

But first see rogue's warning about changing your clientid.

If client-id + email ID must be unique between cores, then the whole 4-quad-update-prpclient-ini.bat mechanism is pointless, no? There's not much point in copying the master ini file into the sub directories if you then must go and edit each copy individually to change the client ID.

Color me confused.

It should be noted that anyone who follows the directions and uses a multicore machine -- that's pretty much everyone -- uses the same identifiers for every core. I think this problem would have shown up before.

If the client ID really needs to be unique, the update script could modify the client ID, but it's somewhat painful to make that work nicely across multiple platforms. In particular, it's ugly in Windows.

I've got a couple of suggestions about how to work around this (e.g., substitution tokens in the Client ID string).

Maybe the simplest thing would be to include the working directory in the information used to uniquely identify the client (i.e., clientID + email + CWD). That wouldn't require a different ini file for each core.

Message 42670 - Posted: 4 Nov 2011 | 20:07:59 UTC

I have splitted master_prpclient.ini into separate ini files and made for each core a unique user-n.ini with the user-info only (all in the same directory where the master is):

user-1.ini contains:

email=xxxx@xxxx.xx
userid=Lumiukko
clientid=Snowstorm_1
teamid=PrimeSearchTeam

user-2.ini contains:

email=xxxx@xxxx.xx
userid=Lumiukko
clientid=Snowstorm_2
teamid=PrimeSearchTeam
....
user-8.ini contains:

email=xxxx@xxxx.xx
userid=Lumiukko
clientid=Snowstorm_8
teamid=PrimeSearchTeam

Then a rest_prpclient.ini with rest of the master_prpclient.ini data:

//server=SR5:0:1:prpnet.mine.nu:7171
//server=ESP:0:1:pgllr.mine.nu:9000
server=PPSElow:100:30:prpnet.mine.nu:12000
//server=GFN524288:0:1:prpnet.mine.nu:11001
//server=GFN262144:0:1:prpnet.mine.nu:11002
...
llrexe=llr.exe
//pfgwexe=pfgw32.exe
pfgwexe=pfgw64.exe
...
echotest=1
// end of file

Note the comment at the end of the file because windows copy script adds a character to the end of the file, which now adds to end of comment.

In windows I have this update script "8-update-prpclient-ini.bat":
ECHO
copy /Y user-1.ini+rest_prpclient.ini prpclient-1\prpclient.ini
copy /Y user-2.ini+rest_prpclient.ini prpclient-2\prpclient.ini
copy /Y user-3.ini+rest_prpclient.ini prpclient-3\prpclient.ini
copy /Y user-4.ini+rest_prpclient.ini prpclient-4\prpclient.ini
copy /Y user-5.ini+rest_prpclient.ini prpclient-5\prpclient.ini
copy /Y user-6.ini+rest_prpclient.ini prpclient-6\prpclient.ini
copy /Y user-7.ini+rest_prpclient.ini prpclient-7\prpclient.ini
copy /Y user-8.ini+rest_prpclient.ini prpclient-8\prpclient.ini
EXIT

and in Linux like this "8-update-prpclient-ini.sh":
cat user-1.ini rest_prpclient.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-1/prpclient.ini --force
cat user-2.ini rest_prpclient.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-2/prpclient.ini --force
cat user-3.ini rest_prpclient.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-3/prpclient.ini --force
cat user-4.ini rest_prpclient.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-4/prpclient.ini --force
cat user-5.ini rest_prpclient.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-5/prpclient.ini --force
cat user-6.ini rest_prpclient.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-6/prpclient.ini --force
cat user-7.ini rest_prpclient.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-7/prpclient.ini --force
cat user-8.ini rest_prpclient.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-8/prpclient.ini --force

Now you can change settings in rest_prpclient.ini and update the prpclient.ini files in the directories with the update script.

You can split the master_prpclient.ini into even more files if you want to. I have now several separate ini-files: user-n.ini servers.ini programs.ini and control.ini and the scriptlines look:
Win:
copy /Y user-1.ini+servers.ini+programs.ini+control.ini prpclient-1\prpclient.ini
copy /Y user-2.ini+servers.ini+programs.ini+control.ini prpclient-1\prpclient.ini
...

Linux:
cat user-1.ini servers.ini programs.ini control.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-1/prpclient.ini --force
cat user-2.ini servers.ini programs.ini control.ini > master_prpclient.ini
cp master_prpclient.ini prpclient-1/prpclient.ini --force
...

This is just an example how the requirement of unique ID can be handled.

That is a very good way of solving the problem. Thanks for that idea!

Ok, I just had the same thing happen, and I am using separate ClientID's on the different cores.

At the pending WU page, only core 1 is shown as having a WU pending. (3 & 4 are working normally).

As far as I can tell, what happened is:

1) Core 2 requested a WU and got 131179*2^2487134+1, but there was a communications hiccup and the server didn't record that the WU was sent successfully.

2) Core 2 went ahead and started processing the WU.

3) Core 1 then went and requested a WU, and was sent the same WU, which is logged correctly at the server. I'm guessing that if another user had requested work next, they would have gotten that same WU.

From the status webpage:

Note that as far as the server is concerned, core 2 doesn't have a WU.

The log from core 2 doesn't show anything that isn't on the screen capture:

Unfortunately, I didn't have debug logging turned on.
